US Army Unveils Potent Successor to ATACMS in Recent Testing

  • The U.S. Army's ATACMS, recognized as the pinnacle of modern precision strike artillery, has long been a stalwart force. Yet, in the ever-evolving landscape of military technology, what proves effective today may not suffice tomorrow. Recognizing this, the Army is forging ahead with the development of a cutting-edge long-range weapon-the Precision Strike Missile, or PrSM-an innovation poised to succeed the aging ATACMS.
    Recent demonstrations of the ATACMS's ability on the Ukrainian battlefield, where it played a pivotal role in a successful strike against Russia's helicopter fleet, mark a significant achievement. Yet, this success prompts a forward-looking perspective. The baton is poised to be passed, bringing with it the anticipation of even greater capabilities and strategic advantages in the ever-shifting dynamics of modern warfare. This development makes us wonder; what advantages does the new Precision Strike missile offer?

      I figured that this is why they gave the Ukrainians a batch at the end of March. US Army logistics people were planning the decommissioning of oldest batches. So, they figured that it's better to give those old missiles to Ukrainians. It can't hurt. Actually, it worked out great.

We are replacing everything sent to Ukraine with newer weapons, built by AMERICAN companies, sending all the expenditures back into the US economy.

    Right now ATACMS have been shifted to several areas around the South China Sea near Chinese illegal militarized artificial islands. These would be used to bring those bases under fire and neutralize them. This takes much pressure off the limited naval supply on US Task Forces if a war was to break out. Yes, as PrSM comes on line those will be immediately sent to the western Pacific where with the ranges stated would make them a very powerful support and deterrent because PrSM would be able to hit China from points in the southern Japanese island chain, Taiwan, and all around the island countries in the South China Sea. From a simple chemistry point of view, the wider the diameter of the solid fuel rockets, the linger it takes for the chemicals to SET into its form. Which is why smaller diameter ones are made faster.
    And since they are always trying to make longer range missiles for surface to surface, air to air and air to surface, they are always trying to find more energetic and stable chemicals to use as rocket fuel.
    And even after the rockets are made, they start to slowly degrade and are sensitive to temperature and shocks and vibration.
    Remember the rocket is a block of solid fuel so if it fracture or break, it may be dangerous to use and may self destruct when ignited.

    There are more than enough ATACMS that they could have been given two years ago and done much good. It's a political choice, not a strategic one.
    It would have been informative to talk about what variable guidance systems (seekers) there are or might be, and what PRSM could do in an EW environment or one in which GPS is severely degraded.

    Any strategical wargamer knows that range creates the most headaches for the opponent. The operational level battlefield assets are often the most powerful and difficult to replace. Often offense-only countries like Russia, Iran, and China (are they all communists?) placed on defense exhibit the worst levels of strategical rationality.
    Consider that the PRSM will be severely underestimated with a Not-Invented-Here attitude with huge political investment in downplaying them to assure they die only when expedient. Coupled with the kind of par-for-the-course abundancy blunderers like Russian and Chinese PRSM unbelievable specs will lead to even greater losses for those partners in the next year's war.
    I can see it already Russian and Chinese strategists snapping their quill pens in anger as they try to guess PRSMs range and limitations. It also shows that these countries political wealth politicos spending most of their money on mainstream media, espionage, and buying out Washington politicians should at least put in a five-hour work week to bolster up post-forest fire like tech trees.
    Maybe our enemies already know PRSM's spec due to a tug of war between the military and Obama's Occupy Washington overstay stint as he, she, or it (in the LBQTWXYZ sense) currently serves a de facto third term on behalf of Xi - Or is it Putin and/or the Ayatollah?
    Does it matter in the Shakespearean sense -if all you can do is watch the Great Washington D.C. Cloud City dump debts, taxes, and inflation down on the citizenry -and on Friday's as the PC press typically dumps the worse new news when people hit the pubs?
    Still, our enemies knowing so won't matter because they've been quite entertaining filling the Don't Book with playbook foibles. The thesis behind that is that spiritual insanity leads to strategical irrationality every time. This construct is our best weapon. The rationality is in all aspects of societies and national security strategy. In this regard, PRSM is one of the best support weapons testing the very realistic conjecture that PRSM is a threat beyond their comprehension know matter how great the intel.

    • @jamesclaytonbowman5977
      @jamesclaytonbowman5977 Před 7 hodinami

      ATACMs missiles (and most of the GMLRS variants) use inertial guidance as well as GPS, so they are less susceptible to jamming. The small diameter glide bombs and 155mm excalibur rounds are solely reliant on GPS, and have been easier for Russian forces to throw off target. It will be interesting to see how much damage the introduction of F-16s fitted with AGM-88 HARM missiles will do to Russia's EW & AA assets in the area.

      @jamesclaytonbowman5977 Před 7 hodinami

      Just like ATACMs and most variants of GMLRS, it will have both GPS and inertial guidance - and it may even have preloaded maps that an onboard camera/computer can refer to, as well. Worth noting, the newer GPS guidance receivers are better at filtering out EW jamming... but having multiple means of guidance is best.
