  • The last major repair for this project is the boot floor. After this is done we still have a whole bunch of small repairs, but these can be done in another day or two.... or three :)

Great work Elin.. These cars take a lot of 'saving' when previous owners haven't kept on top of the tin worm .. I never had to replace a boot floor or spare wheel compartment but I've been near to people who were doing it. Every page of "The Book of Bodyworkers & Welders Blasphemies" was used twice over as the jobs estimated time allowance went into double figures. Respect to Phil for investing in this work and saving another TR-3 from the spare parts yard.

Maybe time for a sacrificial dolly with a bar welded to its back side to allow more force to be applied from further away.

Great job Elin! I have had to replace my TR6 floorboards and I know what it takes to break the spot welds, straighten the sheetmetal, clean up the spot weld nubs and all of the plug welds.

It would be really cool if we could keep abreast of this project with photos of his progress. I bought a lovely restored 1958 TR3 in 2005, deep in the South Africa countryside for a now unbelievable price of $8,700. It looked so good but I hated driving it because it is so open at the side and the driver can feel so vulnerable. So, after just one month of showing it off around Knysna, I sold it on to an English tourist for a more sensible price of $15,000. These cars do not rise and fall in value much, but a 2005 US$ was worth about the same as 3 US$ today.

I have a large mouth TR3 with the exact same issues that you’re addressing. Great educational series on what is involved. Nice job.

Nice work as usual Elin, (I can’t call the body structural in the normal sense due to going on to a frame) but this body is effectively as good as when new now, although probably a little bit “better fitting” than when it originally came out of the Triumph factory ha ha! 😁

Elin I just watched your “Garage Talk” video, where you mentioned that you were going to get away from car restoration of other people’s cars. I understand that as metal work is very time, and space, consuming.
However I think you may want to consider still doing engine/trans/OD rebuilding services. It would take up much less space in your garage, and provide some additional income.👍

Don´t forget the dents on the end plate underneath. But good work, what is about the fender and the front mask on the right side?

Elin, another great series. Question: where was the boot floor panel sourced from ? Fire ? They are back in production ? thks - John

Better to clean the paint off the areas to be welded and use weld-through primer on the overlapping flanges.

Because he grinds down the welds afterwards anyway !
