@bd4947 I mean respectfully I disagree...It's a song about a guy slowly becoming more and more obsessed/parasocially attached as he's losing his mind. I was alive when it was released, and I'm not sure you can speak for the entirety of the "culture" at the time. "Stan" debuted at 51 on the top 100 and went on pretty quickly to become a cultural phenomenon. I'm not sure why you think people's interpretation of Stan had such a direct impact on his career either or why certain things wouldn't of happened the way they did. He was far from downhill or becoming irrelevant as two years later he'd release "the eminem show" an album that I'd argue was much more popular than "recovery". Recovery is titled as such because he was literally on recovery for Vicadin and some other stuff, and was 10 years later, its not relevant in my eyes. Regardless the song ends with Eminem saying the guy should be seeking a mental health counselor in a sincere way. Stan is literally a combination of "stalker" + "fan", and if you don't think stalkers, alcoholics, or people with suicidal ideation have a mental health problem idk what to tell you.

I know your dad would love to hear Mockingbird, it's the perfect next step in his discography concerning in terms of the progression in this Slim/Em story. You see the reality of his domestic situation behind the exaggerated accounts, and just how tragic, complicated and in ways beautiful it really is. He truly loves his children in spite of his fractured relationship, and wants them to make it through this messy stage in their early lives to become good people, but Eminem has to be a paternal figure from the sidelines, and the song is in many ways showing his hopes and his grief felt during the first two albums, the tragedy he can't express except through Slim.

It's such a sad/beautiful song, I highly recommend it. Stan's brother at the funeral having dyed his hair and implying he was going down a similar path always freaked me out a bit. Also Stan's reflection haunting Eminem in the window when he's realizing that it was Stan that he heard about the news. I always felt that part was representing that irl the thought of fans doing something like this really haunted him. 😬 It's simplistic perhaps, but those things always got me. For Christmas they should react to the Christmas SNL parody of this song they did with with Pete Davidson 😅 edit: 🤔 the Elton John part might make more sense if he's seen the surprise award performance where Elton and Eminem performed. Great reaction guys.. FYI, the song is a sample from Dido's (pronounced 'Died-oh') own song 'Thank You'. The chorus hook of 'Stan' is actually the opening few lines from Thank You. It was a massive hit in its own right, particularly here in the UK where she was huge in the early 2000's.
Stan is a great example of how you can take a song and transform it from its original meaning. In Thank You the chorus provides the happy juxtaposition to the depressing nature of the verse lyrics. But take that away and make the depressing part the focus, Eminem then cleverly crafts the story of Stan around it... It is in my opinion one of the greatest uses of sampling in hip-hop history.
