I'm glad you knew the background of Zombie! So many reactions have someone asking people to explain in the comments what the song is about. It's so much better when the reactor has context of the song's meaning and why it was written.
One thing I'd suggest is this is one of the relatively few songs where the music video adds so much that it's an accompanying work of art. I would've liked to see what you both think of the the video, too.

That you went back to research the song and presented the important context before playing the song for him speaks volumes to your integrity. I have been a Cranberries fan since the early 90s and think this is one of the most dynamic technical as well as emotional message songs from the group.
I enjoyed you picking up and describing the intricacies of the intro. I haven't heard someone who had identified the significance and taken it apart before; bravo. The same method is used for each verse intro. It reminded me of something I learned years ago in classical music: The loudest note on a Beethoven score is a rest.
We share that our musical tastes are all across the spectrum and in that line it's not often other venues reach across the wide divide to compliment, but this certainly happened with Delores O'Riordan. In the hit time of The Cranberries the other side of the music world, classical, reached across. Luciano Pavarotti, at the time the world's greatest classical tenor, invited The Cranberries to his show where they performed one of their songs. Then, Pavarotti and Delores sang Ave Maria, Pavarotti's signature piece together. I wish the technology of the time had better recorded the event as it was magnificent. And what an homage to the greatness he felt for Delores as an artist and to the messages she was conveying through her music. On a side note to that performance, Princess Diana was in the audience.
I enjoy reaction videos. Particularly, I enjoy watching how a person is moved when hearing a new song or a new style of music. Keep spreading the wonderment of discovery.

I think this song puts into perfect context what it was like growing up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s in the UK and Ireland. Obviously nowhere faced it as badly as Northern Ireland. But from my perspective in England, it was just an unspoken understanding that if you went into a city or town centre, you might not come home.
The worst ones, (like Warrington, which was the catalyst for this song), were always the ones where children were hurt, but I remember particularly when the centre of Manchester was bombed. I was at an event, and we were counting off who was meant on their way from Manchester, who hadn't arrived yet, and trying to get hold of them to make sure they were ok.
The 1916 reference is to the Easter Uprising, when the real fight for Irish Independence began. The fighting over Northern Ireland continued for more than 80 years.
And now there's a whole generation of kids who never had to grow up with that knowledge that they could be blown up any day...
Thank God and Mo Mowlam for the Good Friday Agreement.

I love watching reaction videos to this song. I'm British, so I get it a bit more than our overseas cousins. Most of the reactions I've seen are from people who clearly don't "get it"
    Cheers guys!

With the Cranberries the iconic songs more typical of their sound were “Linger” or “Dreams”. Dreams was on the soundtrack for a Drew Barrymore movie “Never Been Kissed” which was an interpretation of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”

Now you have to play "Linger" for your dad & let him see how diverse they were. He probably already knows that song.

I have to say how much I appreciate the passionate and knowledgeable way you give context to all the songs for your dad. The whole album is most certainly a must-listen...
    (and btw, it's pronounced "O-rearden")

This is the type of song that with Context, hits so much harder. It reminds me of Pearl Jam's Jeremy, which hits even harder now after all the mental/emotional health issues taken front in the last few years in the U.S.

Awesome. Of course Delores absolutely nails it with the singing, but the guitars, bass and drums are so on point. This song is a masterpiece.

You should check out the video to this song. It has great visuals.
Also there's a remake by Bad Wolves which Delores was supposed to be featured on but she passed away before they could get her on it. They still made the song which is great and also a great video that pays homage to her.
