@frontroom Do "Proof - Searchin for Jerry Garcia" full album reaction. That one's quite interesting as one might say Proof predicted his death with bar in D12 song "40oz", Eminem's "Like a toy soldiers" video and on that album.
"The violence in rap is more of symptom of society, and not the cause" was a fire line.
Of course, that is almost always the case. It would be weird if rap was the cause... it begs the question, where did the rap come from in the first place? (Of course, some music, at least for some people, can be a trigger, and we see this a lot -- but more common is to blame music on things, which is very incorrect. Em makes reference to this sometimes: how school shooters are blamed on Manson's music. That's just insane. Nobody to blame but the evil people themselves. We make choices; we must be held accountable for them.)

I remember going with my bf at the time “clothes shopping “ which is was one of those warehouses with odd shapes and sizes (basically anything that went wrong). He, no lie, comes back with a bunch of XXXXL shirts that were like $1 and one was 2pac and Biggie. The other had printed Benjamin’s and a hustler type quote (this was the early 2000s so no laughing) 😂.. the shirts he actually wore, like all the time. Despite it reaching his knees.😂😂

Despite these laws …”for the drug kingpins!!” it’s completely BS. They go after loved ones who used together and friends. You don’t need to even sell drugs, sharing is all that’s required to send them to prison for 25+ years (worse than R and CP apparently). It’s absurd. I’m in recovery (3 years) and whenever I used, I did so because it made me feel good . I’ve ODed a few times and I wouldn’t want my parents blaming who I used with. No one forced it into my veins.
You guys also can't forget that music like this with this kind of impact was normal back in the day there was loads of music like it but also not if you get what I mean such a damn shame that music era is finished smh

And to speak on his stardom at this point in time, The Slim Shady LP came out in Feb 99, and this comes out in May 2000. This was just over a year, and he went from being able to walk down the street and kinda get noticed, to the level of fame having a controversial top 40 single and top 50 album all around the world gets you. I think it would be fair to say Em was a talking point and on a lot of peoples minds, for that entire year, but only got bigger and bigger
Sadly enough the singles of Eminems discography give a very false representation of what Em actually stands for. Honestly I think his singles are a huge reason why ignorant people who haven't ACTUALLY listened to his discography put him in a box of "another goofy white rapper" when he has so many songs that are legendary but not his mainstream hits.

Number 1 Single is 'Lose Yourself' for sure... And if any of you ever got that single in stores you would have found the song 'Renegade' on it featuring JayZ... I remember the first time I heard that I was in shock of how good it was.

Fun fact, this was one of the last songs Em worked on with dre before he flew back to detroit. so Em had just the piano looped on a tape.
and Em wrote the entire song just to the piano pattern, and everything else was added later.
The entire song is written in Anapestic Tetrameter rhyming.

this song really was crazy when it dropped. the music video... back in those days music videos meant so much. i was young in high school and this song was so popular when it came out. he picked apart his situation and who was messing with him. those first two albums really were something special. so raw.

Man I wish I had a father like yours… I don’t have a father but the way he thanked you for giving him the word “catalyst “ to describe what he was talking about instead of being shunned for interrupting gave me chills. I wish I had someone to talk to me like that growing up.

Nas for sure I'd say as well. Plus A Tribe Called Quest and Q-Tip himself. Quest was great, but then Nas brought what a rap album can be to the next level. Not only was he taking the elements that made the flow sound great (like Tribe), but also the storytelling and meaningful vivid imagery that you can get across like some other rappers I'm too high to remember right now.
Biggie definitely influenced things, but I think Tupac overshadowed him immensely. Though the first song I listened to from Biggie was "Dead Wrong (remix)" where he's like "RELAX AND TAKE NOTES. WHILE I TAKE A PUFF OF THE MARIJUANA SMOKE. Throw you in a choke gun smoke guns smoke."
That made it seem like he had the worst flow ever. Then I was like "well what should I listen from Tupac that shows he's worthy of being so legendary?" The dude told me Troublesome '96. I'd already heard Changes btw so I knew that he was good and that I liked him. But then he comes in like "Menacin' methods, label me a lethal weapon makin' niggas die witnessin' breathless imperfections
Can you picture my specific plan? To be the man in this wicked land, underhanded hits are planned." And I'm like "yo, this guy is so far above Biggie, the only reason they're talked about together is because they both died in spectacular fashion at fairly close times."
Now I realize I'm cherry-picking here. But you find me a single Tupac verse that sounds as bad as the Biggie one I quoted above, then I'll take back my words and maybe take Biggie a bit more seriously.
I love how he is not afraid to speak on real shit that other people won’t even touch because so much controversy and hate now to even speak up about anything and it’s crazy how no matter what Eminem says what he thinks and doesn’t suppress his real thoughts a legend for generations to come for rap music along with multiple other people but Eminem is definitely one of the greatest rappers to ever live
Em actually wrote this song in reaction to a request from his label, Interscope, or more specifically, Jimmy Iovine.
Context: Em handed in the MMLP to Jimmy as a complete work (in his mind) minus The Way I Am & The Real Slim Shady. Jimmy told him there was no lead single and he had to go back and write one. (Em thought it would be 'Who Knew') So in reaction to that he wrote this out of anger and frustration. That's why he has the line about him not being able to top 'My Name Is.' Because that's what Jimmy was basically asking him to go do again.
lol irony of course is that he did do it again, but better with 'The Real Slim Shady.'

I had the chance of seeing Eminem live in Milan in 2018 and man, and I remember just being so excited and happy to be there, singing this song with as much air I had in my lungs felt like therapy. I've been a fan of him since 2009 and I know it's cheesy but he helped me to go through so much. Life wasn't easy growing up and he was the first one to talk about how gross ab*se can get with medications and stuff. Thank you for appreciate this music to kai's dad! I wish more fathers were involved like you, great job.

The line about Marilyn is from after columbine the media said it was bc of Marilyn Manson and they also said Eminem was responsible for violence.

I was in 8th grade when MMLP dropped. As good as these songs are now, when u were there for the societal context and what was happening at the time, it just makes it that much better
Another thing to note for the second verse and regarding the violence in America is that the “upper class city having this happening” was actually columbine. Eminem amongst other rappers were catching heat for rapping about violence and in a sense being responsible for little white kids shooting up schools
Also to add to Em’s production, he produced 2pac’s posthumous “Running” with Biggie. Incredible song. He also produced 2pac’s posthumous album “Loyal to the Game” in like 2004ish

maybe even do a little pregame research before each one to see what was happening in his life prior to, and during the making of the album. so many of the lyrics are verifiable stories from the time the albums were made. would be interesting to pay attention to that and also watch his growth as not only an artist but a human.

EMINEM got into rap with his uncle Ronnie when he was a teenager and he would do like freestyles and stuff with friends. He did a number of underground tracks through the late 80s and early 90s, most of which you’d be lucky to find today. 1996 he put out his first official album Infinite that really didn’t sell well at all. Then he started working on The Slim Shady EP. He went into the Rap Olympics in 1997 where he got second place and a record executive came up to him and got a copy of his tape. Eventually in 1998 it made its way to Jimmy Iovine who handed it off to Dr. Dre who signed him. They re-recorded his Slim Shady EP mastering the tracks, cleaning up the audio, and recording some new songs turning it into The Slim Shady LP which came out in 1999 and in less than a year he recorded this album and released it.
Ronnie was the real Slim Shady. Marshall was possessed by him when he died. Ronnie was the one who murdered the guinea pig and stuck him in the microwave. It’s in Em’s book

Y'all need to listen to 'Forgot About Dre.' It was originally meant for Dre and Snoop, but Eminem's reference vocals for Snoop were so good it made Dre include him on the song instead.

Fun random story. I was in 6th grade when the Slim Shady lp came out. It literally was the biggest album at the time, and if you didn't have a copy of it people looked at you crazy. And this is when I started using headphones a lot, to hide this music from my parents. lol
Now this is going to date me even more. This is still during the time where we had dial up internet. I am at my friends spending the night and we find this software called Napster. We think its too good to be true. And at this point were hadn't heard any songs outside of the Slim Shady lp, but of course we were obsessed with it. So we type in Eminem into the search bar, and an Eminem song we had never heard of before pops up. We click to download it then head outside to play some basketball and meet up with friends. Later that evening we go back to the computer and its about 40% complete, and it would let you preview what you had downloaded already. We push play and the beginning of the song "Marshell Mathers" starts playing. It plays about 30 seconds or so. I can't even begin to explain how windblown we were to hear this. We were in denial at first, thinking that no way can this be Eminem. lol Not only is it new Eminem, but we are downloading it before even a single had been released at the comfort of our own home. It was a moment I will never forget. Once that song was downloaded, we listened to it nonstop that whole weekend.
When this album came out, and "Cleaning Out My Closet" became a single that was played on the radio, there wasn't a time where a car would pass you and they weren't listening to Eminem. It was actually insane to think about how big he was at that time. And its awesome to be apart of it, especially before you could stream literally any song, and MTV was relevant. My favorite was when they would let Eminem take over MTV for a weekend, hosting the shows and all of that. And they called it EMTV lol Outside of boy bands and pop stars, Eminem was hands down pop culture for a good decade.
The level of your Dad’s understanding the music is just top notch. Came across your channel yesterday and just loving every bit of of and the special is your Dad understanding different music he did not grew up listening to. Just Amazing to say the least! 🙌🏽
