High stakes over the open ocean. I don't think you have much hope of rescue if you bail out. Did they have radio emergency beacons? I doubt it.
If you can bail in a dogfight, you'll could pretty much be sure to be picked up, if you could get your raft out, but that might only be with ditching
US Navy pilots referred to Japanese aircraft as Zippos because they light up first time.
Did Japanese pilots even have parachutes?
