This film was found in my Grandfather's house after his widowed wife passed. His name was Edward F. Woelm and he was a Skyraider pilot in squadron VA-923.

Kent Murphy thank for posting. You must be proud of your grandfather's service. My dad was in Korea at this same time (two tours). Later, in VN (three tours) dad was able to record CAS with his Super 8 as a USMC grunt. Some of these missions were quite close to his position. Men among men.

I knew a guy who flew Navy Skyraiders in Korea and he told me that if you attacked a column of North Korean soldiers marching on a road, instead of scattering and taking cover, they would keep formation, raise their rifles, and fire back at you in volleys.

The KPA (North Korean army) were insanely aggressive at times, to point of illogical. US Navy sailors on the battleships (Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri and Wisconsin) recalled incidents where the enemy artillerymen on the coastlines would open fire on them in the apparent belief they could heavily damage or sink the massive armored warships (they were of course obliterated within minutes by battleship salvos). Some of the seamen from what I've read believed that the heavy Communist indoctrination had given those seemingly insane fellows a sense of invincibility. Rather disturbing to say the least.

Read the attached files. One gets a good mental image of flight ops of aboard ship and strike missions.

Check out this video. A little fuzzy and blurry at the beginning but later it has some good footage aboard the carrier.

Would have been a fun job flying those old birds, well, if the enemy didn't have any ammo.
