My father was in the Fleet Air Arm, and worked on the Avenger and Wildcat. HMS Trumpeter, a convoy escort carrier built in the USA, flying American planes. This included a convoy escort to Russia. Without American help we would never have defeated the Nazis. God bless America. They were brave men. I have seen the Avenger close up at the Fleet Air Arm museum, Yeovilton. The folding wing design is amazing.

True, but we had to teach them how to land Corsairs on aircraft carriers. Actually, it was some F.A.A pilot called Stipmson or something, posh officer , had sympathy with Japan in the 20s or early thirties, taught them how to land on aircraft carriers. Totally unofficial and think he got a bollocking for it, plus our Swordfish attack on Taranto, gave the Japs the confidence to do Pearl Harbour. Mind you, we had a playboy spy, think he was Polish, upper class, told Hoover about the plan about Pearl Harbour, but Hoover didn't like him so ignored the information. Either way, they knew about Pearl Harbour but 'allowed it to happen ' to bring the Yanks into the war. Y'know, like JFK and 9/11. Actually, for the 'land of the free,' their alphabet agencies are the worst. At least you know about the KGB or MI5, MI6, but plausible denial is on a whole different level with that lot. The term 'dont piss on my back and tell me it's raining ' should be their moniker. Could be Sempson, that bloke.

As a child I remember one in the playground of Havelock north, crawling inside and sitting in the pilots seat, walking out to the wingtip. I’m imagine the health and safety horror now, not that anyone ever fell off and actually died but maybe the odd broken arm. They are massive aircraft and extremely tough.

The wounded Avenger gunner was luckier than the rear gunner of a hapless SBD-3 Dauntless dive bomber in another silent, black-and-white film. The Dauntless might have been caught by a Japanese A6M3 Zero-sen which hit the rear gunner with 20mm cannon and 7.7mm machine gun bullets. After barely landing on the carrier, the deck personnel didn't even bother scooping out the pulverized remains of the gunner. They placed a large canvas sheet over the rear gunner, held a memorial service by the chaplain, attended by those on deck and those not on duty, then simply pushed the entire SBD-3 into the ocean, the dive bomber being the coffin of the rear gunner.

It was probably this busy guy, the Belly Gunner/Bombardier/Navigator - The MG gunner doubled as navigator, and had three positions inside the large fuselage: He was seated behind the pilot during flight to communicate more easily about the road taken and coordination with the rest of the squadron, but can double as bombardier, belly gunner and camera operator, aiming the bombs or torpedoes. The bombardier had a folding seat to quickly swap to the lower fuselage posting, both managing its bombardier/torpedo roles in the front section, or manage on the rear section the defensive machine gun under the tail section. The belly gunner had to provide navigation, bomb aiming, but also acted as radio operator.
Tail Gunner - The dorsal, rear turret gunner did not swapped positions, being stuck at its post on a dedicated fixed seat, under a rounded framed enclosure. They were to defend it when in its most vulnerable, during an attack run.

The plane probably climbed and the engine was started to position and take off. As a wounded man arrived, due to the urgency of taking him down, there was no time to wait for the engine to be turned off and start the whole process over again.

The gunner was decapitated by an anti-aircraft shell that came up through the bottom, and more or less went up into his body from bottom to top. His name was Loyce Deen . He was buried at sea inside that plane as it was too messed up. It was the only burial at sea in a plane during WW 2.
