- Hello there and welcome to the opening scene from the final episode. Enjoy it!
As always Add-Free!
A series from Apple. During WWII, five miles above the ground and behind enemy lines, ten men inside a bomber known as a "Flying Fortress" battle unrelenting flocks of German fighters.
A like or comment is always appreciated and i will try to respond to them all.

Yeah the delivery is just perfect.
The only problem is that it isn't true!
This raid is in February 1945. The Luftwaffe shot down many Allied aircraft in the coming weeks.
Claiming to be masters of the air is an insult to those airmen who died in the last weeks of the war.
@@CzechImp i think its just a reference to how they had ABSOLUTE air superiority during the ending months of the war. even their allies are dwarfed by the armadas that the USAAF put out during that time.
@@CzechImp By February 1945, the Luftwaffe was going through its death throes, though they still threw up surges of resistance here and there. They simply didn't have enough experienced pilots left, on top of suffering from serious fuel shortages and Allied fighter pilots making a point of attacking German airfields. The majority of USAAF losses by this point in the war were due to anti-air artillery.
@@Raguleader True. But they were still flying and shooting down Allied planes - hence "masters of the air" is simply not true.

1:14 I know this may look weird, but the Germans did employ surface to air "Taifun" rockets. Originally they were trying to work on surface to air *missiles*, "Wasserfall," but it was a bit of a mess. One of the guys that worked on that program instead proposed designs for a simpler rocket in the latter half of 1944. Wikipedia says production began January and 600 were made but never used.
Though the Germans never used their Taifun rockets in anger, the US did get a hold of the technology and based off the Taifun, made the Loki rockets.
P-51D Mustang's in that "Big Beautiful Doll" checkerboard nose paint scheme. My personal favorite next to the Red Tails and the Blue Nosed Bastards of the 352nd.
The Checkerboard pattern denotes the 78th FG, flying from Duxford in Cambridgeshire
In 1945 most of the USAF bombers were B-17Gs, I only see E and F versions in the scenes, which were mostly in olive green and most of the G versions were in natural polished silver. Somehow it's not really depicted perfectly.
This is correct, but time and budget constraints meant they had to roll with what they had. The full sized, real, B-17 they had for ground shots was an F. So they had to stick to the F.
Still, it doesn't take away from the over all spectacle.
Couldn't that have been changed in this day and age using computer animation?!
@@stefanjost259Imagine having a $250M budget and still not much work has been done on the CGI. I dunno where they poured the money onto most if not the CGI. So much potential, very little effort. I won't say that the CGI in the entire show is 100% bad, because there are very nice scenes.
I don't really agree with the current possibilities of computer animation that could have been used. We must not forget that this is not twenty or thirty years ago when these options would have really cost a fortune. Even if the production had a fixed budget, the visuals would still have had to be closer to the reality of the time because the relationship between the crews could not really be represented correctly. I don't have the slightest doubt about the work for this excellent acting and performance, but for me it falsifies the reality of that time.
@@stefanjost259 With the delays due to COVID and the rushed production, it is very clear that something has fallen between the chairs and things were either overlooked or weren't given enough thought process. That is why MotA, as a show that depicts a set of WWII events dedicated to American air crews, has not been fulfilled accordingly, which really saddens me.

No, as far as I know. German fighters, especially twin-engine ones, sometimes fired off a salvo of air-to-air rockets at bombers in formation. Not very accurate but sometimes they hit bombers and also disrupted formations.
the germans had unguided anti air rockets in 1945 as a last ditch effort, at this time in the wat the german air force was gone@@stevekaczynski3793
German fighters could launch (or better, lob) missiles into US bomber formations, preferably from behind.
As these rockets did not have any proximity fuses, they would detonate after a given time.
Meaning that only expert Luftwaffe pilots like Galland were able to use these rockets effectively.
If you launched them from the front, the rockets would probably go through the whole formation before exploding.
These rockets did not fly well, which is why they were lobbed into the formations, falling through and losing altitude rapidly.
I once read an account of an ace Luftwaffe pilot actually downing a P-51 with such a rocket, which seems unbelievable to me.

Proceeds to get shot down while on a bombing run.
They were despite being shot down. The Luftwaffe's ability to deal with Western Allied air power took a massive dump in 1944 and got worse and worse. Why show older B-17E/F's (1943 era) instead of the very different looking B-17G with the very distinctable chin turret under the nose which was used by the 100th in february 1945? Might sound like nitpicking but when you have all this historical research, money and CGI available why do such a sloppy inaccurate job?
It downgrades the historical accuracy of the series.
Budget. Everyone thinks CGI is super cheap -it isn't. Good CGI is very expensive. Still, I can forgive it. People nitpick this series something fierce. Nobody gives Band of Brothers shit for using a dressed up T-34 as a Tiger.
@@kalnarenBut it “looked” like a Tiger 1, these B 17 Fs are supposed to look like “G” which they should be…at this time in the war…it’s just completely wrong…
@@alexwilliamson1486 It didn't look like a Tiger if you know what a Tiger looks like. Road wheels were wrong, turret location was wrong, all the proportions were wrong.
Masters of the air certainly isn't historical documentary levels of detail, but it seems to get ragged on a heck of a lot more than it deserves (Band of Brothers had a lot of inaccuracies in it as well, even a few things the book got wrong, too, but no one seems to care). As WW2 aviation themed shows/movies go it's nowhere near the worst offender. The CGI isn't even that bad. Short of Hollywood blockbusters like Top Gun 2 there isn't much better out there (and some -like Midway and Pearl Harbour -a hell of a lot worse). I can forgive them using B-17F where Gs should have been used... at least they got the planes right. That's more than a lot of TV shows or movies do (Dunkirk used Spitfire Mk.Vs when they should have been Mk.Is.. nobody cares).
@@kalnaren the tank in BoB was not important to the story. The B-17’s are actually part of the main story for MotA. And this is the most expensive production of a tv series ever. Money was not an issue.
The last bombing scene of the show and even that didn't get much love to make it dramatic enough... As much as I think EP9 is a nice ending, still far from being memorable.
They made up so much BS for episode 9 it really makes it hard to watch. The problem with the bombing scene is that the Germans never had ground to air rockets. They at least could have gotten that right.
@@TheSocratesian The Germans actually did create mid-war and used anti-air rockets from fixed positions, I think it was called something with 297 in the name, iirc. So it's not completely inaccurate, although I'm not sure if they were used specifically in said bombing mission. But generally speaking, yeah, up to the point of EP9 there was nothing to expect anymore. End of the show, meaning the end of the war, so it was obvious.
@@JADEK111 Actually there was a post war review of all German surface to air projects. One of which was the Wasserfall surface to air missile. The review concluded that the Germans were working on but never deployed them. If you have any documented instances of this type of weapon's use I would be very interested to see it.
@@JADEK111 You are mistaken. They were close to developing one but it was never deployed according to the review of all German rocket programs after the war.
@@TheSocratesianI'm not really knowledgeable on that part, but I guess the scene was made with no regards to historical accuracy, but rather for dramatic purposes only which is expected in a Hollywood production. Then again, they could have made the same dramatic effect with a flak gun directly hitting the B-17.
