- Hello there and welcome to yet another another amazing scene with the addition of the P-51 this time. I find this yet another amazing scene and i do hope you like it too.
A series from Apple. During WWII, five miles above the ground and behind enemy lines, ten men inside a bomber known as a "Flying Fortress" battle unrelenting flocks of German fighters.

War films in general always show troops, vehicles, and planes way way closer together than they were in reality. There's no way to film a particular viewpoint in a letterbox realistically unless you want to film mostly open space with little action. So planes in reality were not anywhere close to as densely packed as they were here. Not a criticism of the scene; it's just what you have to do to make it compelling.

@@FireMarshallStevb17 bombers did fly this tight. You can see real photos of ww2 of them flying this tight. Even vets said how close they were to each other. They had to for protection
The P51-D was a game changer and the final blow to the Luftwaffe. What an incredible flying machine for its day. The last Great propeller fighter before the jet fighter...which oddly enough the Luftwaffe used at the end of the war. Though the Jet was faster the P-51D held its own in dogfights vs the jets.
Some pilots preferred the B/C model with a similarly tuned engines. It was overall lighter than the D/K models and the pilots said it was that much more agile.
The p-51 was shit until they put a British engine in it

@@ISAFSoldier Im not sure thats true? Although mods were made throughout the war, the B's C's still ran the rolls Royce. The D mods included the bubble canopy which I believe most fighters converted to because of better visibility and to a certain extent easier to disembark in an emergency. And I think the additional to 50's? . I have the 363 rd fighter group mission book. there isn't a lot of personal comments on things but there are zero comments about the switch from B's to D's shortly after D day. There are no comments about pilots being disappointed in the D's. My Dad and Uncle were 51 mechanics with the 363rd. From its inception. Neither one ever mentioned pilots being disappointed in the D's performance???

In this raid, there are 900 P-51s......
There were over 900 fighters that flew this mission but only 102 P51 Mustangs. The rest were P47's , P38's and Spitfires. There was even 2 squadrons of RAF Mustangs.
Makes the 10v10 fireballs 8n world of warplanes seem tame lol

According to James E. Johnson, when the Spitfires were first escorting the B17s, The gunners would shoot at any single engined fighter that came close. They asked the B17 guys what to do about it. They were told to fight the Germans further away. Break off if the German you are chasing gets close to the bombers. The gunners will take it from there. So that is what they did.
That certainly tallies with what I have been told.
That's correct...after he was shot at by the American bombers he flew back to their base and asked politely what they wanted.
They told him to keep the Spitfires away from the bombers. Providing the fighter escorts could disperse the attacking fighters, the bombers could take care of themselves. What they couldn't cope with was multiple attacks from multiple directions.

Spectacular scenes. I wish the producers and directors etc had paid more attention to the technical advisors. They really went overboard with the number of escorts depicted and their distance from the bombers.

If you want to understand more about the Germans' view on Big week, it is J.G 26 top gun of the Luftwaffe. It sheds a lot of light on what happened.
When you see the bombs explode you hear the explosions at the same time. I guess now sounds travel at light speed in this day and age. Now that’s progress….

Hollywood syncing the sound to an explosion isn't noteworthy. It's the default.

It's called delivering what the majority of the audience expect.
Many expect to hear explosions when they see them. Any delay and they think it's crappy sound design.
It's an entertainment show, designed for the masses, using historical moments as a setting. It is not a pin point super accurate documentary, nor has it ever been marketed as such.

The Tuskegee airmen flew those
P-51 Mustangs, Red Tails. I knew a bombardier named Eugene Runyon from Richmond, KY. He later got a Ph.D. Case Western Reserve and taught psychology at Central State University, Wilberforce, OH.
They did not fly escort missions over Germany.
Correct. Tuskegee were 15th airforce operating out of Italy.
Fun fact, on this mission there were more P-47s in escort than P-51s. The Mustangs only escorted the bomber stream part of the way.
I bet the Aiken marched with the civil rights movement to thank those Tuskegee airmen who saved their lives in the sky. ❤

This statement would come back to haunt him as Allied bombers devastated Germany; many ordinary Germans, especially in Berlin, took to calling him "Meier" and air raid sirens "Meier's Trumpets". It is said that he once himself introduced himself as "Meier" when he took refuge in an air-raid shelter in Berlin.

The first raid on Berlin was in 1944, and there weren't many F model B-17's still flying. They'd either been shot down or were worn out.
The P-51's resemblance to the ME-109 was remarkable.
It was the first raid on Berlin by the USAAF on March 6th 1944. The British RAF made the very first raid on Berlin through the night of August 25th and 26th 1940, followed by further 362 bombing raids in total on Berlin by the end of the war in Europe on May 8th 1945.
By most accounts, the Mustang's resemblance to the 109 (to bomber crews, at least) was really uncanny IRL, especially while in combat. This was exacerbated as the fighters became engaged, and often the P-51s had to follow the Germans as they flew into the bomber formation.
The F's were horridly phased out due to their lack of a chin turret. Some were modded for multiple firing machine guns under the nose.
The G was a great upgrade and I often wonder why they did not think of the chin turret in the original plans.
@@ericscottstevens The Germans reacted to being shot out of the air during stern attacks by developing the frontal attacks. The single .50's on the early Forts wasn't enough firepower.

When the Soviet foreign minister Molotov visited Berlin for negotiations, the British started a bombing raid that forced him, Ribbentrop and their staffs to a bomb shelter. As negotiations continued and Ribbentrop boasted how the British were “finished” Molotov stated “If that’s true, whose bombs are being dropped out there?”

If this was a documentary and trying to play the footage as real combat footage, then yes, you'd have a point. But it isn't. It's a show based on historical events with dramatisation.
This is a dramatisation and caters for the MAJORITY audience who just want to see something compelling, visually interesting and dramatic. This show is delivering just that.
Nowhere was it advertised or claimed to be a hyper realistic representation. And if you went into it thinking it would be, well, that's on you.
None of you bad mouthing the show understand entertainment and how to produce it, you might think you do, but you don't.
Real life seldom translates well on to TV screens in an entertaining or visually logical way.

One hundred percent in agreement with you - no doubt a lot of the commenters might be frustrated pilots showing off their "knowledge." But there's an inherent challenge in portraying any air war with "Private Ryan" levels of absolute realism. The "average Joe" can understand what happens when soldiers are pinned down by machine guns or snipers, but the air combat environment was often described by participants as "surreal," with good reason. The same "average Joe" likely would not understand the relation of distance to speed when crews were confronted with German fighters, and how a distant speck could turn into a passing fighter in mere seconds. Or why a P-51 pilot needed to perform gut-wrenching aerobatics to fight a bandit that's a thousand feet away, which may not look like an immediate threat to said "Joe." It's worse with jet combat where, if presented realistically, you would see Maverick perform high-G maneuvers in the vertical plane to "kill Jester," who at best looks like a little speck in the distance. I think the Masters of the Air film makers have succeeded in conveying this (to most people) surreal, alien situation in terms most viewers will visually understand. The rest of us could do worse than to forgive this and not let it get in the way of enjoying the show.
Reactionary groups, indoctrinated by reactionary channels to react, comment and point something without even knowing or seeing it. Programmed already.. it's kinda sad.
Seriously. Reading comments of war films and shows is probably some of the most annoying crap possible. If just a few or even one minor detail is off, people immediately dismiss it as laziness or historical reformism, and that the work apparently has no merit. Ironically, half the time their nitpicks end up being incorrect anyways.

The allied airplanes used the Berlin Olympic Stadium at the west end of the city as a beacon. For this reason it was never bombed.
It needs to be stated that the P51 mustang was only able to escort bombers all the way when it was paired with the British made Rolls Royce Merlin engine which was fitted to in fact what was the best fighter of the second world war the Spitfire. The p51 was originally fitted with an Alison engine which could not operate well above 14000ft the introduction of the Merlin changed all that. The Merlin when fitted with wing mounted drop tanks gave the P51 the altitude and fuel required for the full escort . From what i have seen the series overlooks some very important facts.

It’s an American tv show they don’t give the British any credit.The underlining theme is the good old “ all American boys” coming to save the day. Every single RAF or British person shown in the shown is presented as a posh toff who are incompetent. It’s the classic portrayal of British characters in an American ww2 show. As great as band of brothers was that to had a nack of showing British units as completely incompetent, such as the market garden tank scene.

The Mustang was not the best fighter of the war, even if it was an excellent design. There are too many choices from the US, UK, USSR, Germany and Japan.
What set the Mustang apart was it was cheaper to build & maintain.
@@CaseytifyMany Pilots favored the P-47 "The Jug". It could take a beating, had good range, the 18 cylinder turbo charged P-2800 engine had excellent performance and 8 .50 cal verses 6 on the Mustang.
The density of fighters in this scene is absolutely ridiculous and fake looking. The whole production looks like a video game.

Plus the bombing scene, each Boeing drops the bombs like grains of sand while the standard loadout was eight 500lb bombs per plane.
Well no it was anywhere from 100lb through to 2000lb. Those were the standard bombs and it was mission dependent.
Not to mention the B-17 cpuld carry a maximum of 10 500lb bombs on long range missions, but generally had a max capacity of 6000lbs so more that 10.
Be that as it may, the scene actually downplayed what it would've looked like in reality. During this mission there were 900 US fighters in the air.
P-47’s, P-38’s, P-51’s and even RAF Spitfires (and RAF Mustangs) escorted the US bombers over Europe (albeit at different legs) - but only the P-51’s get the credit. It’s like Saving Private Ryan; 2nd and 5th Rangers were brought to shore by Royal Navy crews, not the USN. Easy to include but omitted for some reason. And the speed of the fighters compared to the bombers in all the episodes is hugely exaggerated - and the CGI is rather bad. It’s great to see this aspect of the war covered but I can’t help feeling it’s a huge missed opportunity. It’s why I’m no longer bothered when Hollywood ignores adapting my favourite books - in fact I’m rather grateful!
In the case of the Mustang's getting all the credit, especially in Hollywood, it's a pretty simple reason - Berlin. Spitfires, P-38's, and P-47's simply did not have the range to escort B-17's to many targets that were deeper in German territory, like Berlin. And while they may not have been 'bad' planes, P-38's and P-47's simply weren't as good at overall dogfighting as the P-51, even British pilots that piloted both the Spitfire and the Mustang noted that the Spitfire was better in turning fights and all - but the the Mustang for what it lost in that ability could still go toe to toe with 109's over Berlin and come back cause it had enough fuel. And most shows/movies that show the bombers getting attacked with fighter escort, it's closer to target usually, which is when they were more likely in the hands of the P-51's than the others.
@@anthony7697 The relative failure of the P-38 as an escort fighter in Europe is a little more complex than range and dogfighting ability. The P-38 had pretty good range and, in the hands of an experienced pilot, the P-38Js and Ls were more than capable of holding their own against any piston-engine fighter the Luftwaffe had. The issue had more to do with how much more complex they were than single-engine fighters and the extra needed training time that simply wasn't available in the early days of US involvement in the European air war. That, and they had problems with cockpit heating which was actually a pretty important feature in Europe where the fighting usually occurred at such high altitude.

They had how many years for filming and this is the best CGI they had? I'm glad they're showing the air war, but I feel let down by the poor quality of the CGI. I know the budget was nowhere near what they had for BoB and the Pacific, but I feel like they could've done better.

Yer exactly, the P51 was designed to specialise as a long-range escort fighter. Consequently thanks to its exceptionally long range it was hands down the best escort fighter of the war. But in all other aspects of aerial fighting, airspace defence, airspace supremacy, close air support, ground attack, reconnaissance, etc It was firmly outclassed by the faster, more agile, more heavily armed and more versitile Spitfire, which was designed to be an all purpose fighter.
It's a comment from the point of view of an American sat in the pilot seat of a Bomber finally seeing escorts all the way to and from their target after enduring many missions without them and seeing their friends shot down in droves. It's not supposed to be taken as some official historical fact.
@@bmused55 Exactly. It's the equivalent of a modern Infantryman saying that the A-10 is the best CAS platform around, because they can *SEE* an A-10 doing its job. The F-16, F-15E, and AH-64 are all technically better at the job, but Joe isn't going to see them, or even hear them. They'll just be seeing an enemy position one second, and a crater the next. But an A-10? You'll see the position, and then that position gets ripped apart by the Avenger and then you hear the BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT, and look up and there's an A-10.

@@ISAFSoldier Wrong, Mustang P-51D top speed was 437 mph. Spitfire principal marks from MK16 onwards top speed 448 mph. That is fact. The only thing the Mustang beat the Spitfire on was range.

I feel like they forgot about aircraft like the P38 and P47 which both did escort missions and both could carry drop tanks with final product run p-38 could carry 2 300 gallon tanks and the p-47 with a range of 1000 miles with the N version
I live close to Munich and do research on downed fighters of both sides. Identifying crash sites, planes and pilots, telling their stories.
Several huge air battles were fought here and 8th &15th AF as well as the Luftwaffe lost many planes and lives in this area. The toughest battles were fought by P-38s and P-47s - the 38s when no other fighter could reach so far, the 47s later for the dirty and enormously dangerous work as ground attackers . When the 51s arrived, they of course still contributed much, but the 38s, 47s and their pilots ought to receive more praise.

This is Black Monday, March 6th, 1944, the N variant of the P47 wouldn't be deployed for another 6 months. The P-47 D bubble tops didn't have the range for a complete escort the whole way out and back. By the time they got the variants that could do it the P51-s had already taken over the job for the most part.
The P38 was a joke as an escort plane, Multiple disastrous attempts were made and it was yanked from that role entirely after examination found that it was considerably slower than the BF109 and FW190 planes it was supposed to be protecting the bombers from. It was entirely the wrong tool for the job.

@@tristanbentz224 Most of them had the superchargers, the early models that added in the drop tanks only added in 150 miles at the expense of losing their top speed.
As an unexpected consequence when they returned from escort missions they would seek out targets of opportunity for their unused ammo. This lead to them proving ideal as a fighter/bomber and the later variants were designed and modified for that role instead of trying to compete with the P51 as an escort.

Assembling for takeoff with shadows showing under the planes, e.g., sun high in the sky (mid-day). Guaranteed there were no missions to Berlin that took off much later than sunrise.
Pendantry aside, in the UK during June to September, the sun rises super early and can cast shadows like that by 7am. In fact, at the height of summer, it never gets truly dark.

Indeed, but the ME262 was unable to be mass produced. Add to that the fuel shortages after failing to take Stalingrad, and the Germans were betting on the wrong horse to save them. They should've focused on nuclear tech.
thought b17s only carried like 10 bombs. Those were dropping like 30 =O
for this mission they had a load out of 30 100 pound incendiary bombs and 10 100 pound general purpose bombs

Sound travels around 350 meters per second. I guess we were hearing those bomb impacts from the Berliners’ perspective and not the bombers’?
Minor details were changed for the unknowing viewer, because the majority of people would hear the sound later and be like “that’s crappy sound design” not knowing that it was realistic, so unimportant and minor details were changed just to adjust to the major audience

I quite certain they didn't give a shit what color they were. You should spend less time playing victim though and more time paying attention in school and working on your grammar and sentence structure. That gave me a headache.

Actually they did build a couple of B-17s from scratch. It’s just that they were static for the scenes on the ground.

No I expect the P-51s to not be ridiculously oversized and plastered all over the screen just in case you missed one. They just gotta jam em right there in front of the viewer like "HEY DO YOU SEE THIS P-51? WELL HERE'S 100 MORE" instead of having them do what they'd actually do what they'd do and climb to meet the enemy.
P51 Mustang , best fighter of WW2 ? From an American perspective maybe , however the war would have been over by this point if it was'nt for the real best fighters of WW2 , The Spitfire and The Hurricane.
The P51 was developed for the British and used a British engine anyway. They were the first to buy it. And designed by an Austrian/German migrant. It is of course known primarily as being used by the Americans though
Correction : the P-51A used the Allison V-1710. It wasn’t until 1942 when the Rolls Royce and the USAAF came up with the plan to use the V-1650 Merlin in the Mustang. Both the Spitfire and the Hurricane were designed to be interceptors, not fighters. Both lacked the “legs” to serve as escort fighters.
@@stevehicks8944 Not so the Hurricane and Spitfire were designed to be fighters. The Spitfire in particular, was designed to be an all-purpose fighter and performed phenomianlly in the all purpose fighter role. It was faster, more agile and versatile than the P51. The only area the P51 beat the Spitfire in was its significantly superior range, precisely because the P51 was purposefully built to specialise as a long-range escort fighter rather than as an all-purpose fighter.
I think you could make a good argument that it was an optimum design for a piston engined fighter aircraft , good speed,range and armament .
@@stevehicks8944 Yup. Key thing to remember is that "Long range" to the British or Germans meant from London to Paris, which was a is a good length flight to be sure. But to the US, that was considered a medium-length flight. For the US "Long Range" meant flying from NYC to Los Angeles, which was easily double the distance From London to Berlin.
Contrary to popular belief, the US did have fighters that could go that distance. The problem was numbers. The majority of those fighters were needed in the Pacific where running out of gas meant swimming home. And at the time that decision was made, the belief was that the B-17 could look after itself in a long-range raid. But it soon became apparent that this would not be the case.

And instead of circling above te bombers formations, they fly through the bomber formations and head straight for the German fighters that have the altitude and of course, speed advantage...

The ensuing combat, a mix of enemy/friendly bombers and fighters (which has never happened in this way), seems straight out of Star Wars...

After Greyhound and this, maybe Hanks should leave war films to the new, better generation of producers and writers.

Think the producers work on the assumption that majority of viewers will not have a clue about the subject.Such a shame because these brave men should have had a more fitting series regarding their outstanding exploits and bravery.I thought some of the CGI was good (let down by a few scenes) but the Star Wars type battle scenes are ludicrous.I am a Brit but notwithstanding that,the derogatory inclusions in the script regarding the RAF was totally unnecessary…..apparently the RAF carpet bombed indiscriminately?….oh yeah,what about the precision raids on the Mohne & Eder dams,Tirpitz,Dortmund-Ems canal,Kembs barrage etc etc .
Some of the script writing is so lazy…Germans calling the Stalag Luft breakout “the Great Escape” and admitting prisoners were executed?????… to pathetically try and cover up this war crime,the official line was “shot while escaping”
With Spielberg and Hanks apparently involved,we deserve better!

Particularly annoying after seeing P-47s following correct fighter escort tactics earlier on in the series - weaving above the bomber formations to keep with their slower speed. And that was in the background of a few shots that only lasted a couple seconds…
You rivet counting perfectionist have got to be the most miserable, whiny people on the face of this planet. Go watch your laughably dated and terrible 12 o clock high and Memphis Belle. At least that way I don't have to see incessant crying on every single clip posted to youtube because it wasn't a 1:1 of a documentary. It's meant to tell the stories of the men depicted in the show and book. If you can't handle some creative liberties in between all that then why bother watching?
Absolutely terrible CGI, really basic tat. Compare and contrast to The Battle Of Britain (1969) shot on film 55 years ago which looked far more realistic - because it was done for real!

Cgi is a bit ... lacking
This series had a budget of like $250million and we get PlayStation1 graphics for when the bombs drop and show the city.
In reality, the B17 could carry the same bomb load to Berlin as the British DeHaviland Mosquito...4000 lb. Each of those planes seems to be carrying more bombs than it could physically fit inside it, or lift off the ground, never mind carry to Berlin.
And, the Mosquito, made of wood, using two engines, and having a crew of two, could fly there and back without fighter escort because it could outpace anything else in the air until the ME 262 arrived.
what the hell was the budget for the production on this show? I have heard a lot of great things about this show, but seeing this episode is my introduction to what i can expect, and its laughable what i am seeing.
I know it may not be fair to compare, but Godzilla Minus One was done on a budget less than $15 Million. there should be no excuse for anything looking so bad as this for those landscape aerial shots and the bombing sequences...

I have to admit I don't like the sound of the engines. It is unrealistic, not what the R1820s sound like. The CGI is great here, but nothing can compare to real planes and real sound like in the Memphis Belle. Plus the Windy City takeoff scene is just iconic. I can watch it time and time again.
Agreed with the sound of the engines. Can't agree with you on the CGI though. I think the CGI is pretty bad. The CGI is so poor and obvious, that its like you watching a moving painting, and not something real.
The CGI is extremely disappointing for 2023/4.
I thought this series was BS. No mustang is going to fly through the flack with the bombers. 50 cals was short burst only, not what they are showing. This was hollywood's version and it's quite far from realistic.
Such a missed opportunity….so much money,advanced technology,hype etc etc and this doesn’t come anywhere close to the classic Twelve O’clock High made in 1949

Sure, some of the storyline was a bit Gung-o but then most American war films usually are...P51s flying into combat with drop tanks still attached? ...Its you who is being fooled by over and misused CGI... like Starwars in the Atmosphere.......l might be using rose tinted glass but l ain't being fooled by this bollox.....

I hate that i read multiple articles referring to this as the "Band of Brothers of the sky". It's over dramatized forced tripe. Imagine Winters acting like the lead douche in this show. Winters was eatablished as a great leader through his actions. All this show does is give him a moustache, an ego the size of a B17. It's grim how bad writing has become in the 2000s.

This looks almost like a star wars movie. The failure to depict the reality of risks these men faced in favour of a more entertaining hollywood version feels almost disrespectful. Won’t be watching.

Literally the worst CGI imaginable, it really breaks the immersion and spoils the whole thing for me....
It's not without its flaws, but comments like these make me think you haven't seen movies like Red Tails, The Red Baron, Flyboys, Midway (2019) or a bunch of other aviation movies that are WAY worse offenders than this.

This series really demonstrates the lengths Americans (and the world) had to go to stop fascism. What is so disheartening is the rise of fascism and anti-democracy dictatorships around the world as well as in America itself these days. We Americans need to go to the polls and resist fascists like Trump, MTG, Kari Lake, and countless others. Our democracy and freedoms are at stake. I used to be a republican but can no longer, in good conscience, vote red. We must prevent this from happening in our own country.
