- I bought a couple of great cacti this week and I wanted to show you how I am growing them in my cactus garden. Obviously before I do anything I have to propagate them to turn my 2 plants into many more!
The Cholla cactus is a vigorous grower and im excited to see how I can shape it in the future. I also couldn't go wrong with the Opuntia because of its iconic shape and look.

I love how your holding the pot with your gloved hand and picking the cactus with your unprotected hand! Especially the Opuntia which can be very irritating! Thanks for the video!
Kid reaching for the cactus had me nervous
hello! i'm from the Philippines. I've just began gardening cactus which hopefully would be a success for me. given the low maintenance it demands from me I am crossing my fingers that I could keep these alive. hahahahaha. thank you for explaining everything clearly.
Jessica pamel welcome to gardening! That's the best part about succulents and cactus, most varieties require very little care. Glad I could help :)
I was looking for concise, practical steps for propagating prickly pears. And that's exactly what I got here. THANK YOU. I will now see what other useful advice you post. All the best to you.
Thank you very much! Glad that I could help out. Happy Gardening!
I love your cactus garden!!!!
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing!💚💚💚
I loved this video. Perfectly done and exceptionally informative.
Now I can propagate my first cactus correctly!!
Thanks for the info! Love cacti!!!
Once again the video was clear concise and to the point. It seems that I’ve gotten into succulents a little more than I planned thanks to your videos on them. I absolutely love them.... I just want to say great job and thank you my succulents are looking great and I have quite a few now..... till next time this is Craig in Baton Rouge
Craig Thanks a lot for the feedback Craig! I'm glad I could give you the succulent craze :p they are just so much fun to grow and experiment with :) take care!
I just bought Cylindropuntia plant. Mine is big so I’m gonna take some cuttings. It is best to take a cutting out a limb from the bottom of the branch joints. However cutting it in half it will still propagate. Also here’s a tip if you want US to branch out as you know if you cut a section from a side branch it’ll sprout new growth another directions.
Awesome video! I love propagating cacti!! :)
Great video
WOAH! I love the cacti garden you got going
Wow cool
Thanks for the video. I am from the phils. Just had my opuntia a couple of weeks ago. I hope it survives!
Just the video I was looking for to propagate cholla. Thanks!
Love, love, love when little ones touch catctus, WTF 👊
I like the video of the plans
I look at opuntias and I get tiny ,invisible stickers in my fingers.
Thank you, that was really helpful.
Glad I could help 😊
Baby reaching for the cactus as he starts the video lmfaoo
He’s learned since that cacti can be quite prickly :p he’s actually a really good helper in the garden 😊
Thank bro ...
Thank You .
You're welcome! Happy Gardening :)
When you say more moist than usual, how often would you say you water the cuttings?
Tnx Sir... To teach me.. Because I want to propagate my chola cactiiiii.. Tnx a lot...
Chollas are easy.
Cut,let cut end dry, plant,do not over water.
Do not over water I
I have that kind of opuntia and the micro needles of that hurts like f*ck. Had to tweezer all of them out. I dunno how you can touch it.
I suggest you use tongs to hold cacti
this is very nice and clear cut video.I like it.I recently post a video of propagating prickly pear leaves.new subscriber.
Thanks a. lot! Glad you enjoyed and thank you so much for subscribing :)
How big do these grow? I wouldnt want to plant them indoor and have them get huge
What is the name of the one with the pink buds growing?
after putting the dried cactus cuttings on the soil, how often should i water it?
Leave them without water for a few days, up to a week, after that you can water as you normally would.
How much time these cactuses needs direct sunlight?
I just cut it today its my first time .. can i know about the soil mixture it requires...
You can purchase a standard cactus soil mix at your local garden center or mix in about 1/3 sand to 2/3 regular non fertilized soil.
🌹❤🌹👍👍👍
Do you have a special soil mix/ratio?
Any well draining soil would do fine
Do you raise them inside? I live here in Eastern Washington, Zone 5, and have a three foot Cholla that is now my Christmas tree cactus, lights and all, and our temps get down to single digits, and it is still going great guns! I am trying to make my yard into a Cacti/Succulent garden area! I am specific on the hardiness, and if they don't make it through the winter, out they go! So far so good! I have only five Hens/Chicks that didn't make it! So far I have about nine varieties of cacti and six or seven hens and chicks!....I'm still looking! Good luck on your garden! Now try them outside in the winter!
Hey, nice video. I have been watching your videos for a very long time and love the content. Your propagating succulents videos have helped me a lot with my garden! I live in Colorado and I have recently planted some veggies (Squash, Broccoli, Chard, etc). I would like to know if you had any suggestions on how to get rid of Aphids (small green little suckers that keep appearing on the leafs). Anything would help. Thanks!
sara calvin thank you so much for watching! That means so much to us! Great to hear your getting some nice veggies started! I have had great luck with neem oil :)
Sounds good! Will def. look into it! Keep up the videos/good work!
sara calvin thank you :)
"just like you're chopping a tree in half"
Whenever possible try and cut your cactus always! Twisting it like you did can destroy the vascular tissue.
Thanks for letting the viewers know, ive never had a problem doing it like that but certainly is possible!
Clean your blade.Do not over water.
How can you touch a cholla without pain? My cats won’t even go near mine, those spines hurt!
Faylyn Addams oh well my cat just love scratching her butt on my cactus. lol
Lol my cat just bit into one of mine because he saw something in my room and got excited
Easy! Just start handling them with your bare hands when you are a toddler 😅
How to prepare soil for them?
A regular cactus soil works great. Or mix 2/3 plain soil and 1/3 coarse sand
A regular cactus soil works great. Or mix 2/3 plain soil and 1/3 coarse sand
Before I watch this video, I still don't know, if after cutting the cactus, we need to dry it for several days. I put it in the soil after i cut it, and have been on the soil for one day. The question is, whether my cactus will survive if I take it out from the soil after one day, and then follow the normal procedures (dried it up to several days)?
You don't really need to dry it if it's already in the soil. I'd just keep it there at this point
@@ExpeditionHomestead thank you so much, i'll try it
What kind of dirt?
Just your standard cactus blend 😊
wow your airplant hmm!
Thanks :)
you didnt say what your soil mixture was
The mix it’s in is about 1/3 regular soil, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 sand or perlite
Sir name these Cactus llz
Maybe you should use the gloved hand to remove the pads and keep those glochids out of your right hand. I know you got some. Lol.
What's nice about the beaver tail cactus is that they have way less spines than a prickly pear and can be handled with care
@@ExpeditionHomestead that's true. I have some big purple ones that I got years ago in 29Palms Ca. Some big thorns but tons of glochids.
I wish mine were purple! If they were growing outside then maybe I'd get some more color on them. While they have grown quite large if you look at our recent uploads, they are still almost the exact same color
Wear the glove on the hand holding the pot, and bare hand the cactus. Yeah buddy…
Definitely dont want the babe touching that cholla 😵
Also, your comment about watering schedule. There shouldn’t be one. Cactus are full of water. It looks like you live in an area where they would survive without watering indefinitely.
No.... If I didn't water them indoors they would surely die, I don't get rain inside of my house :p these are also only hardy down to zone 7.
,
When the baby almost touched the cactus ⚰️⚰️
Hahaha he’s actually learned how to touch them without getting spiked :p he’s an incredible little dude
@@ExpeditionHomestead it only takes one time to learn 😜 he’s adorable I love his commentary in the background
It has many little brown thrones please keep away from this cute baby
This is so helpful, thank you. I have cut three pads from my bunny ears and hope they grow. 🙏
