  • This is the best way I have learned how to propagate my Opuntia Cactus. This video provides you with information on how to increase your cactus garden.
When you are making cactus cuttings cut at the base of the pad. Dab the end into some rooting hormone. Use a very light soil media. A mix of compost, Silica Sand/ Pool filter sand, permatil, and perlite is what I like to use. Place your new cutting into your pot with the soil media and that is it! Wait three months and you should have a pot full of roots. Keep the new plants somewhere protected for the first 3 months while your new plant is developing roots.

One of my favs is the Snow Cactus. Not the Old Man cactus. ...It has a couple dozen tall ( about 14 inch) thin pads in a pot covered with very long hair. I don't know the names yet of all of them yet but I love propagating them. Eve's Needle is awesome too. My large pot of Edgars Baby ( Dragon Fruit ) is beautiful in the hanger I put them in.

I just bought several big agave parryi, golden barrels, blue glow agave, blue yucca rostrata, desert spoon, agave tequilana, and my favorite, a 14 foot agave Macdougalii, and purple prickly pear, San Pedros , and some round paddle cactus which I wanted to cut because the bottoms look scarred and brown , thank you for the video, off to cutting I go. I also think one of my barrel cactus is going to die because it’s a little yellow and definitely a parryi because I pulled a leaf and it’s rotting .

Cool, thanks. I'm from Canada, but have lived in Jamaica for the last 9 years. Been doing some work on the south coast lately where there are Opuntia. Scooped a couple, and propagating them in soil that's a mix of clay and sand (clay from the soil in my yard, and sand from a beach). They're growing surprisingly fast, although next time it will be less soil and more sand. They need better drainage.
Interesting thing is that when the new "pads" shoot out, they start with pure thorns, apparently to prevent any critters from eating them (wild goats and hogs here, although they're both invasive). I'm hopeful that in the future I'll get flowers, and enough new pads to try eating them.

I bought an opuntia from a box store and it had LOADS of little pads coming off of it. I decided to take 6 of them (there's still 4 on the mother) and try to propagate them if I could, fully expecting they would fail. I used a gel rooting medium, left 3 to callus and put the other three right in soil (with rooting medium). In the end, all 6 were successful and now I have 7 opuntia and idk what to do with them as I only have a tiny greenhouse haha

all sand is silica and pool sand is actually extra fine and can hold more water than other grades of sand (can be good or bad depending on what you're doing). my experience is that even if the bag says the sand was washed and is safe for horticultural use: wash it again anyway. multipurpose sand or coarse builders sand from big box stores work great for stuff like this just be sure to wash them first. most recently I brought home quickcrete brand "washed" multipurpose sand from Lowes. before using it, I put some in a plastic bucket and added an equal amount of tap water. when I measured the TDS it was over 400ppm of inorganic salts when my tap water measured 60ppm. that is what burns and kills plants.

I got a cactus pad of the same variety you were just planting. I planted it in the ground just as you showed and it seemed to be doing just fine. Then one day I saw start a shoot out the top of it which I thought was a new cactus pad. Unfortunately the shoot just kept growing and growing and growing and growing straight up and is now at least a foot tall and pencil thin. Now the bottom of the actual cactus pad has rotted and I am wondering how to propagate from this shoot. Should I just lay it flat in the dirt and let roots come out and will pads grow up out of that? or should I try cutting it into small pieces and try planting those? Or should I just try planting this long shoot straight up into the dirt? Please help I really want this cactus to succeed. Any suggestions?
