- Today I'm showing you how I propagate the cholla cactus in San Antonio Texas. You can easily grow this Cactus variety in the central Texas area zones 8B and 9A, and I have looked online and it is reported that it grows along the southern states.
Thank you! This helped me a lot as I didn't know how to propagate a Cylindropuntia imbricata that i have. I personally never use gloves or anything when working with cacti but that one made me know why some people do! Your cacti look absolutely stunning!
😁
Nice cholla i have a pretty big plant also, i will make a vid of my cactus garden here in houston, i love all kind of plants but cactus agaves and succulents are a league of their own and steal the show every time
good video love that variety of cactus, I have several growing at my house
Interesting. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! Im gonna make some more vids covering different varieties of cactus to propogate real soon.
We have those here in Arizona too
Found a couple seedlings in a hardy cactus mix from.local nursery . So lucky! Hard to find any hardy cactus at local stores in south central New Jersey dry sandy soil growing well for 2 years hardy plant I think.its the jumping cholla easy to root taking 12 cuttings dry cuttings at least a day or more before planting
Always use rooting powder helps root plant prevents rot . lightly water cactus cuttings not super moist like other plants cuttings . Share with friends and people
The longer you wait before watering the better. A week is usually optimal. Never count on rooting powder to protect from water.
I've been propagating a lot like this as well. Any experience using it as grafting stock/root stock?
You should not plant for 2 days after cutting. Pots don't do as well as soil planted. They tend to root bind after 1 year. I have a 3' variety of these same purple flowers. I also have Opuntia leptocaulis.
What species of cholla is this? Thanks
Wow very nice
Thank you so much. They are growing perfectly in this 100° weather.
@@retired1sg718 me too sweet
@@KINGSTARGARDEN sorry about the late response! I subbed your channel...hope we can share ideas on growing different varieties of plants and trees.
I have one as a house plants it has branches in many different directions. My question is if I want to encourage more branches would I have to cut a branch and half for her to grow one or two more new branches near the cut?
Hey Dave, thanks for watching. When a branch is cut and has nodes under the cut, either branches will form, fruit will form, or leaves will form. I do this to stop vertical growth and to encourage lateral growth for my fruit trees.
Retired 1SG Is it necessary to also include cutting the top to encourage lateral growth? Thank you
@@daver9643 if you cut any branch where nodes are present, then branches will grow from the nodes. It will happen with any branch as long as nodes are present.
Retired 1SG thanks for the clarification the top works as well as the sides do. With my cactus cholla, I don’t really see any nodes on it unless they are there and I don’t have an eye for cactus nodes. However in the past I remember I had a tubular cactus plant didn’t see any nodes and if I cut a tube branch in half or part, it will grew one or two additional branches. But yes I do agree that on regular houseplants the nude rule applies. Maybe the narrow part midsection of the cactus branch is the node?
Do u sell cuttings? I would like to try growing different cactus in Pennsylvania in a greenhouse.
No, I'm sorry. Also sorry for getting back to you so late
How deep do you plant the cuttings and do you water them afterwards?
Hi there Dave! I plant my cuttings about an inch below the soil line, just deep enough so that they stand up on their own. I water them immediately to after to ensure the soil is wet, then maybe every other day after.
There was an experiment done in the desert. A branch was cut off clamped vertical. After a year. The clamp support was removed. The branch was then dropped. It rooted and grew.
Hey, you still there? Says “retired” I’d love to ask a question.
Howdy..ask away! Lol
play this at 1.5 speed
woah can i come take a cutting? i am also in SATX
We have plenty to share. Do you have any cacti?
Retired 1SG yes 1sg I do I have a little collection. I own cylindropuntia leptocaulis, opuntia englemanni and O. basilaris seedlings.
@@victorsaloum9731 that's awesome man!! I'm in the process of grafting a Dragon fruit variety to my Cholla. Wish me luck! Lol
@@retired1sg718 want to meet at the texas A&M campus to exchange cacti i would like to give you an O. Basilaris seedling
@@victorsaloum9731 sure. We can coordinate possibly sometime this week. How tho? Lol
Ah, nuts. never mind. I thought this was the jumping variety.
Would have been better to take one out of the soil so we see the roots!!!
