Awesome! I can't wait to try this! I don't have any type of greenhouse so I'm wondering if this would work on a covered porch. Also, after they root when can you put them in the ground? Thanks!
Liked your video, but you kind of talk too much the unnecessary things.
@@jenjohnson4613 Wondering the same thing on when to plant in the ground! I have a clipping from a rose bush my grandma has. I rooted it like this, don't have a greenhouse, put it on the side of my house that gets light all day long, but no direct sun...it's doing great...but wondering as the summer moves along, when is the best time to plant in the ground? Some say wait and winter it, some say August, some say the fall...hmmm!
What is the best cutting to take if a distance away? The leaflets like the vid, or a few leaves? Esp if it will
It willl be 3-6 days before I can transplant
My grandmother just passed away and she loved her roses the house is being sold so I’ve decided I’m going to take some of her roses off her bush and replant them thank you for this it means a lot
You're welcome and I'm glad you can carry on the memory of your grandmother.
This is the exact reason I am here. House sale and want to continue the beautiful roses my mother has in my life.
@@patrickkonig Same here. Selling the house of my parents.
@@MikeKincaid79 Ive heard that roses are normally grafted on other stems to prevent illnesses. going to look on your channel for info on that.
@@ochr5149 What grows will grow. I love the idea of carrying on the Rose line. Best of luck my friend.
Also as a handy little note...
The bottoms that you cut off your drink bottles can also be re-used as a seedling container. Just pop a few drainage holes in the bottom, add growing medium of your choice, and voila! Seed trays.
Nothing wasted! 😊
Happy growing and God bless everyone.
My grandma took a cutting from her grandmother when she married my grandfather after WW2. He passed away couple years ago, and she is now 91. I have the chance to clone her roses and gift them to the rest of the family. I'm going to clone twice as many as i can, and share them with my massive family. Thanks for the tips and tricks. I just want to preserve that legacy. For some reason, I find great value in that. Thanks for the hard work and wisdom. This plant is over 100 years old, and I'd hate to see it fade away.
Pretty cool story. Good luck with your cuttings.
Best wishes for big bushy roses 🌹❤
"... and what do you do with the flowers? You take them inside for your wife"
AWWW! I had to pause the video and just comment on how wholesome and loving the delivery of that was. I'm watching this video because I want to take cuttings from a rose plant called Shiela's Perfume, it has the same name as my aunt who passed away last year. She had Down Syndrome and died in her 40s. I wanted to take the cuttings and grow plants to give to all of her siblings (my uncles and my mom), she was the youngest of four. Thank you for sharing this video and having an amazing attitude. Your video was the first one that showed in the results when I typed in the search, and I'm glad I clicked on it.
Happy growing!
I'm glad you're here too! It's so cool to hear that you want to spread that one rose plant around to family. This is very real and possible and I wish you much success. I'll be putting out another rose video, that I've been working on, in the coming weeks. Good luck!
We have had a scented rose bush, pink/white mix, in the family for over 200 years, all the family have taken cuts for decades, and the roses are blooming in my families gardens throughout Ireland.
Sounds wonderful. Really awesome story.
Wow! Nice!
Oh my goodness, what a blessing . I have some family buried in Cork, Ireland. Would love to visit one day and would love to know what is the name of your rose? 🙂❤
How have they gotten them to root
Ppp
I’m so glad I found someone who gets as excited about seeing roots as I do! People think I’m nuts too
You're in good company!
Props for taking the time out to film this in multiple sessions over the span of a few months, and it’s done so well! Thanks for this!
No problem, that's my claim to fame, haha. If you like this one, I've got many more videos of different plants in which I do the same thing.
Mike I followed ur instructions. I must say thank u. I have a 90 % success for all my cuttings.
That's so awesome Diana! Glad to hear you've been very successful with this method. It's a lot of fun isn't it? I've got another of these rose videos that will be out in a couple weeks. I love rooting these roses.
Have you had any success with knockout roses
Ok. I just have to say this: every man, woman, & child needs a person in their life that is this excited about gardening. I raised a bunch of gardening kids thankfully. I bet this young man is too!
Hello Sherri
Fantastic
Indeed!
I agree, he's the first video I watched on this subject and became fond of him.
I'm still winder if I can use honey as opposed to hormone paste.
I got the gardening bug , from my Beloved Grandmother , she Loved 🥰 her roses 🌹.
Watched this video last year. Right after blooming, I cut the flowers of and planted the cuttings with the bottles on top. 3 out of 5 made it. I thought like this I had the best chance since all the energy was going into the top where the flowers were. In this way I could use that energy for my plantings.
And gues what ? This year the new roses even started blooming ! Can you imagine, after one year ? I was totally baffled.
Thanks for the tips because now I've been able to "reproduce" my more than 60 year old climbing rose !!!

That is so cool to hear! Thank you for sharing your success, I love hearing about it.
Lost my Mom 3 years ago. She had a gorgeous, fragrant rose bush. I've tried twice to take cuttings. After watching this, I'm excited to try your method & I'm praying for success! Thank you so much‼️💞

Unashamed excitements about roses and soda bottles is refreshing
Mike, I'm just seeing this and how excited I was to see it. My mother-in-law - way back in 1968 - taught me about rooting rose cuttings. She simply would trim the branch as you did, trim the thorns, dip it in the power root tone and "stick it in the ground with a jar over it". She had a spot just outside her kitchen door where her "babies started". She would watch the day, and if it was cloudy and coolish, she'd leave the jar as it was. If it was bright sunshine, she'd raise the jar on flat stones or such until nightfall. It never failed. Two years ago, I discovered an ancient climbing rose in our bushes, totally overgrown with monkey grass and such. I was thrilled! I dug it up, placed it in a showy spot and kept it watered. It grew wonderfully last year, no flowers, but great bush development. This year, right now, it's covered in buds. And it has the most wonderful "old climbing rose" scent. As the flowers fade, I will try some transplants...because...who ever has "enough"?? Thank you for your video!
Sounds like you had a wonderful mother-in-law! Glad you enjoyed the video, Joyce!
Joyce Judd ok uh thx in in MN
You can never have enough roses!
Hello Joyce
@@annbryant8096 hi how are you ?
Roses are my favorite flower. I just started trying to grow them last Spring. A year later, I have 9 plants, all a different color. Now, I will attempt to grow some off of what I have. Thank you for making this easier and less scary to do!
You're welcome. I love the fragrance this variety has. If you can find a 'Blue Girl' get it. Here's another more comprehensive rose rooting video: czcams.com/video/y_1fUrMhCpg/video.html
Thank you so much!
I used your technique on my mom's roses and one from my sister.
I did it last August, left them in pots in the ground thru a hard winter, and planted them in April.
One has a flower coming, ☺️.
Now, I am making starts from a rose I bought my granddaughter when she was small.
I'm so excited!
Thank you!!
You are the only garden you tuber who is easy on pocket. Love the way you use waste material in growing plants. I already feel like I am going to get rich by propagating my plants and saving money.
Good, I want to keep it simple and make it easy for you. Yes, you can make extra money doing this, for sure!
I'm very jealous that you have beautiful little garden helpers. Mine are grown and gone but the flowers they helped plant years ago are a daily reminder of the giggles and ew, gross moments we shared. Suck up every minute of this time off with your family! You'll all remember it as one of the best times ever!!
So far, we're loving it and bonding more than ever.
Great video. One of the things I am proud of accomplishing is rooting a rose slip and getting to see the bush bloom for the first time.
The stuff they don't teach you in school. This is bad ass. Makes me want to try it.
Glad you enjoyed it Seth. The fun stuff begins after school.
This all depends on the fact that you must get a very special teacher!
I came here looking to learn something new and ended with a big smile and a full heart. Thank you Mike, you're wonderful!! 🌹
Now I have a full heart! Thanks for the nice comment, Jana, and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

My Grandpa taught me how to garden and I love it! He planted roses 33 years ago and he would cut them and bring them in every few days for my Grandma. She passed a few years ago and he passed last year. I can't wait to propagate those after seeing this, thank you! ❤
You're welcome, and good luck with your rose cuttings!
What a sweet story to share, what a wonderful romantic gesture for his wife! ❤️👍😊
Dani Girl, what a treasure you have to cherish from your precious grandpa!!!
🌹👏💖☺️
So, I was taught to “poke a hole in the dirt FIRST….then put the stem in, and cover it up……because if you shove it down into the dirt, as the stem goes in, the dirt pulls off the rooting powder…..so very little is around the bottom.

I watched this video, planted cuttings last Summer and almost every one of them rooted. One rose "stick" not only routed but even bloomed this Spring! So I've got 8 more rose bushes! Thank you for your instructions and excitement about gardening.
Thanks for sharing! So glad it worked out for you.
Your excitement most assuredly is infectious (in a good way)!!
Your video is the most informative I’ve found on YT! I’ve taken two cuttings and within a week both of them have began getting new growth!

I have a beautiful rose bush that my late Mother planted 60 years ago... she started it off from a cutting that was from a bush 50 years old itself!
I've done my cuttings from this bush, three weeks ago. I put one slip-just one, under a water bottle and it's got leaves all over! So yes, this method really does work!!❤
Yes it does!
Thank you so much for this. I am growing 8 rose bushes from my grandma's roses. She has been gone over 37 years and my dad hasn't been able to get them to grow. He is on the last bush that they had. Thanks to you, we are going to more and more. They are the old type so the perfume is amazing. Thanks Mate. !!!! From Australia.

So dang precious that Mike includes his daughters in his gardening. Those learning and sharing experiences set the stage for not only memories, but skills they will keep for a lifetime. Reminds me of my dad 60 years ago when I was little. Proverbs 22:6.

Wow, I'm amazed. I had never tried to propagate a rose in any way. I watched this video this past July and decided to see if I could do it. Well, I got the cutting planted and covered with the bottle top and put it underneath the swing on the patio. It gets a little sun every day, but not too much. Kept checking it to see if anything was happening. It seemed to be doing okay, so I stopped checking as often. Yesterday I happened to look (it's late September now) and was amazed. Not only had the cutting taken, the cutting had grown 10 inches and had 9 side shoots off the main stem, and the top had grown up through the open spout of the plastic bottle covering the cutting. Not only that, there is a tiny rose bud right on the top. Wow! Guess I should pick off that bud so the energy can go toward growing the root. Can't wait to plant it. Thanks for such good directions------they work great.
That's so awesome! I love to hear these stories and I'm very happy for you that it rooted well. Great job, Victoria! If you're interested, here's another more comprehensive rose rooting video but it sounds like you've got it figured out: czcams.com/video/y_1fUrMhCpg/video.html

This was so unbelievably helpful! I tried this with one of our more rare park-roses, and it worked like a charm! I even went as far as to try this method with other kinds of cuttings, like Honeysuckle, and they too rooted very quickly. I even planted the latter in a transparent orchid pot just to see the roots develop, and they were visible within 2 weeks!

thank you from my garden in New Zealand, i have 40 year old roses and their smell is amazing, will follow your way so everybody can have some
That would be a fun project, spreading a 40 year old rose around the neighborhood. Good luck and have fun with it!
The key is rooting hormone. After removing the thorns, I go even further by lightly scaping the lower end of the stem to encourage more roots from the "wound". Also, I have made new plants by planting them directly into the ground and not using a plastic cover. Here in NY state, I have done this in the fall when weather is not hot anymore and it is relatively cool, but still weeks from a frost. By spring, the cutting is established and has new growth sprouting. Everyone should try to make cuttings of roses, especially if you have an heirloom rose bush! 🌹
Thanks for mentioning that about the cuttings in fall. Once the wood is more hardened off, it can hold up well without as much humidity. I agree, everyone should be doing this!
Does it matter what kind of hormone?
Poo
I have used rooting hormone for my butterfly bush. Thanks for the tip on scaping.

Mike: Thanks for all the detailed info. I planted a tea rose last year and the blooms this year are amazing. It was one of only a couple of plants that made it through our two weeks straight of 105 degree weather and continued to bloom in spit of it. I was surfin' these videos to find out how to take cuttings so I could grow more. Your video was the best, most thorough video I have found. So 4 years from the making of the video I’ve just seen it. I’ve used lemonade bottles for ages as cloches with the lids unscrewed for all sorts of plants. Also I sometimes buy 5 litre water bottles which are also very useful. Being careful at the moment as had a corneal graft recently but look forward to getting back to planting stuff. Must admit wish I’d been able to take cuttings from the bunch of varied roses DH gave me for our anniversary but I’m nearly, but not, at that stage yet. This is the best plant related video i've seen!! You're so happy and motivating, will do this with my fragrant dark red roses when they are semi-hardwood as well :) thanks so much for sharing

So glad I found this. My grandparents are now both passed, and they had cuttings from their mothers' roses in their yard. I plan on propagating clippings from both for each of my siblings. ❤

Just the concept of using the bottles is a game changer to me. I’m going to try rooting my blueberry cuttings with this method.
Blueberries will root well using this system. I did a video on that too if you're interested: czcams.com/video/3IQqBePHL5g/video.html
