Propagating cholla and purple prickly pear cactus

  • I was given some cholla cuttings about a month ago. Around the same time I trimmed my purple prickly pear cactus. I forgot about them and came across them today and seen they were starting to root themselves. One is blooming the other will in the next couple days. When starting cactus you are supposed to let the cutting develop a scab by leaving it to dry for a couple days to a week. I show how I have previously used native clay soil to grow cactus. This is something you shouldn’t do because it compacts and suffocates most plants. In this video I just use regular potting soil. Cuttings can just be put directly in soil if they are not kept too moist or even just placed directly onto soil. Burying some of the cutting will provide stability. This can be another cheap or free way to expand a water wise garden. Do not take cuttings or plants from the “wild” as there are laws against that. Ask someone who has a cactus for a piece or buy them. Remember to use caution and gloves or something to grab the cactus with they do have thorns and will stick you. If you are trying to get rid of a cactus make sure you get it out of the area. They can easily root and stick to soil, rocks, cement, wood.... anything that has moisture.

The pad you sent me is doing great. It did open that one bloom and I think it's rooting already.

Nice, I found the pink blooming kind you thought it was... so tempting.
