- On May 09, 2015, I travelled on American's first 787 between Chicago and Dallas. It turned into a very interesting flight. It was a very bumpy ride and the weather actually closed down DFW for a few hours during the flight, so we had to divert to Tulsa to refuel before making it to Dallas.
During the delay in Dallas, the crew was fantastic and gave first class passengers a tour of the cockpit and also the crew rest area. We actually had a great time and you could really tell the crew was proud of their new plane.
I hope you enjoy the video and comment / "thumbs up" below.
I was on this flight!!! Had a blast
I would have loved all of this... the bonus to Tulsa, the tour of those mysterious quarters, the picture in the cockpit. How fun..... unless I was in a hurry.. thanks for the video
I retired from American Airlines as a Purser/In Flight Trainer. I was based at DFW and later SAN until I retired. I'm very proud of our f/a's from AA...they are the best!! I recognized the voice of the #1 F/A as I trained her ! :) Very nice post! :) And thank you for flying American Airlines!!!!!
@robmartin Thanks for the comment. I love AA and that is all I fly. I got platinum this year for the first time!!!
Thank you John for the virtual flight. There is nothing better than sitting back in my lounge chair and getting the feel of actually traveling somewhere without all of the negatives that can accompany travel. : )
I've had my experiences with the DFW weather. From an hour delay to a 7 hour delay arriving back home in Chicago at 12 in the morning. I avoid traveling to Dallas.. Unless I really need to go there. Great video by the way.
Mega M have you tried going throudh dallas love feild
+steampunk812 Love Field has very few flights going through it and unless you're flying Southwest, it's not really an option for most people.
oh
I wish all taxi's at ord happened this quick. Wonderful video and AA on top of their game
What a plane !! The cabin seems to be so quiet and comfortable
Thanks for uploading. I love this plane and the new GE 90 engines that power it are great - big power, better fuel economy, and not as much noise. :)
Fantastic plane! Took if from SHANGHAI and lack of jet-lag was noticeable .. .. So quiet (night takeoff) that my mum asked when we were taking off and I told her we already had!!
Just watched this video and really enjoyed it. I liked how the ground crew at Tulsa were fascinated by the 787 arriving there. Cheers from Australia.
I was super excited when the got this dreamliner. The whole month of May Was rainy for Dallas so there was a lot of flooding. Glad they kept yall safe!! Great video
GREAT!!! The ever BEST vid. recorded in a Dreamliner!! I am so excited to see this. THANKS!!
Too bad about the delay, but Mother Nature has her way. I am waiting to get on the 787 myself.
Great video! Hope you do more. I don't get to fly much anymore and watching videos on youtube is the next best thing. Thank You!
as a United flyer having had reverse seats for the better part of 7 years - you'll get used to them relatively quickly, and find that they are actually a nicer way to fly due to the tilt of the aircraft in cruise. I liked the custom-designed seat AMR designed for the 787 / 2-class 777 (this work started under AMR), but I like the 3-class 77W J seat more - it's larger in every dimension.
Love the new 787!
The 787 is very beautiful airplane!
It's true
They flew a plane that big on a flight that short? You got lucky my friend!
Yes, they were testing it before international service out of DFW and ORD. That is why I picked this flight.
Well, one advantage of sitting in that particular seat was that you didn't have to crane your neck to see the wing and engine. I appreciate the judicious use of the FF feature.
I enjoyed your video, very well done. Yes I could tell the crew is very proud of their new plane. Safe travels
+brazil5657 Thanks!
I remember when American Airlines had a huge fleet of ATR-72 turbo prop aircraft grounded at Ohare in the winter in the early 90's after a nose dive crash of one of their ATR's in a corn field due to heavy icing on the wings. They later replaced them with the Saab turboprops that can handle icy weather and sent those ATR's down to Florida for warmer Caribbean routes
All the travel videos are awesme, Greg.
Great Report and great editing!
Great video, nice quality, tks
Nice video John, i too love the sound of the engine
Hi John. Great vid! I was on the same flight opposite you in seat 2A. I barely made my connection with less that 10 minutes to gate C36. A lot of running, but loved every second of the flight.
Facing backwards would just mess with my senses.
Unusual for a plane that big to be making such a short hop down to DFW unless it was going on to somewhere else farther away
Que janelão panorâmico. Lindão o B-787. Já voei de 727, 737 (todos operados no Brasil) B-767 e B-777.
nice video. I booked a flight from ORD to NRT in September. but in economy. Can't wait.
How cool is sitting in the Captain's seat on the flight deck...dang!
They have this Cabin configuration for the domestic US flights? wow.. impressive..
+Shukhrat Arifdjanov This aircraft is used for international flights. Sometimes, the schedule is made so that it arrives into one airport A from overseas, but is needed to fly out of another airport B later in the day to another overseas destination. That aircraft is then scheduled to fly a domestic route from A to B (usually two big cities with high demand anyway). It's called re-positioning. The Business Class seat is then sold and ticketed as Domestic First Class and gets the domestic level of service. It's a very nice upgrade when you can get it, but it's not very often.
I have a flight coming this year on this same aircraft from Chicago to Los Angeles.
i love this video
Thank You for such a wonderful video. I will fly home on 2332 in December from DFW on the same. I can't wait :-)
+James Elliot thats cool
Sky The Ranger yes and I am just about two weeks away from that voyage.
wow i hope you have a good trip
Awesome!!
Everyone likes Chicago midway airport and likes flying southwest airlines
@That's Cool: That,s right: Only during a limited periode of time (a few months) AA uses the Dreamliner on it,s shorter legs too. For the airline,s promotional flights. But regulary the Dreamliner IS a long-haul jet. For example ORD - LHR or DFW - FRA, etc.
Haha the Purser/#1 is my wife, we just watched this haha, small world.
AAMD11ER ......really.....I didn’t know she was married.....she never said anything.....I slept with her after this flight.....I’m so sorry......I really didn’t know!!!!!......this isn’t a joke either......I am serious!
The Frase ...
No way.
@ 35:10 Sounds Like a 172 doing a run up lol
Great Video of the 787!
Awesome Video. Hoping For More Videos From You.
she is purrrrttteeeee!!!!
Very interesting flight indeed
what a plane!
It's not often Tulsa Airport handles an aircraft that large
1202 Program Alarm but It can handle large plane it can.
Nice!!
I was seated backwards one time many years ago on a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 from LAX to Dallas Love Field. I didn't mind it but it was a little different.
did you speed up the video to make it go forward!?? CLASSIC!! :)
wow buen vídeo. tienes mas?
I'd be puking flying backwards.
Great treat...two flights for the price of one. Very cool. Thank you for sharing. How intrusive/unprivate was the opposite-facing seating?
It was just a strange feeling. I actually prefer the new 77W business class. See my previous video from Hong Kong.
I love the new paint scheme! I am also wondering why the new 787s aren't used for longer haul flights.
@niklasenblom They are using the 787 on this route to test everything before international service. It is now flying Chicago to Tokyo and Dallas to ICN/PVG/PEK.
I got to see a U.S. Airways flight out of MEM resently and the 787 is a butiful plane
That route doesn't have that type of aircraft anymore during this year. One has to connect via SFO or DCA or CLE to go to DFW.
Great video. Waiting for my flight in one. Looks like a video I might do. Those delays are the most memorable. Neat to get a tour of the plane.
The new plane for 2015
Very nice video! What did you use to edit it? Thanks :-)
+John PerryThanks John. I used iMovie on my Mac. I actually hate the program but I don't want to spend a lot of money on software.
nice
How's is the cabin looking on the 787
what altitude did you fly at for the TUL-DFW leg?
nice video.i am going to take it 7/28
are the seats navy blue or dark grey?
l can't believe it the plane is a Dreamliner
How did you get so lucky?!
i was gonna non rev that section, but will go to bejing instead
How long were you guys in the air before landing at Tulsa?
About 2 hrs...
I can't remember that our 787 from Air India was that quiet xD
I don't know why cuz I was sitting at the very back of the plane :/
how much did the first class flight cost?
good job for you guys xD
what did use to video this? smartphone or video camera
Canon 70D
Very good vid, I am subbed to inflight expert, I'm sure he'll appreciate the little tribute, perhaps you'll spin a plate one day as a tribute to homer, one day i hope to take the Qantas non-stop service from Sydney to DFW, you have a new sub.
Thanks +gbalmain. I really like inflight expert's videos. If you look at my previous videos, you will see my Homer tribute too! I also want to fly the A380 from dfw to syd.
Sorry if this has been asked before but does it feel awkward facing rear during takeoff?
Very, especially during takeoff!
What kind of camera was this shot on and how big of a memory card?
+chrisz71 canon 70D. I usually travel with 128GB cards, just in case.
Is it easy to get a shot of the engine from 2L?
No, very hard. You are sitting backwards and the window is hidden.
Is the admirals club near all the gates for american airlines?
Yep
Why is it when I look at a first class seat it is always L2
EXCELLENT video John! it was so well done that I immediately subscribed. You should consider doing promotional videos for the airlines or something involving media then get me to do the voice-over for those promotional videos freelance of course. I was hoping to see if the restroom size had actually increased from closet size to something far less claustrophobic. Great job indeed on this video, Bravo to you!
Thank you, sir. Yes, the bathroom is double the size with wood floors!
SWEEEET!!!
Thas business class actually. AA does not features First class seats on 787.
Well you are partially correct. For domestic flights,it is sold as first. For international service, it is business.
What seat?
2L
2 landings for the price of one. :-)
Okay people And John Nolewajka , First of all b787-8 has e about a 8900 NM range on it with a full passenger complement on board . Second i live in Austin Tx where everyday for the past few years British Airways Flight from London UK TO Austin TX usa Flight no 190 and 191 . LHR to AUS & AUS TO LHR and i have not heard that the flights have every had to divert to another airport to get fuel . thoes AA pilots really messed up this trip. That's Cool it could possibly make form LAX to SYD but i doubt it .It to long of a trip Darien K made a great point how ever The the crew that assigned to the 787-8 will go to Seattle WA for there training and rating first then they fly back to the UK and make livery sometimes they will fly with the aircraft back and receive it when they land. i have a father who was a pilot in the USAF.SO someone who flew this flight need to get reevaluated and and have a couple more check rides. After i watched this video i just had to comment.
+David Pembleton Aircraft only take on as much fuel as needed. No such thing as "fill it up." Fuel weighs a lot, so the more you have on board, the heavier the aircraft total weight and the more fuel you end up using to get around. Thus, in the interest of saving a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands per flight, the planes fly with the amount of fuel needed to get from A to B plus some reserve. That reserve varies on destination, flight duration, local aviation laws and options for diversion. For example, if you're flying out to an island where the nearest other airport is a couple of hours away (say Fiji or Reykjavik or the Maldives), your reserve will be larger than say if you're flying to Dallas, Los Angeles or New York, since there are numerous airports nearby to divert to.
Then, if it is a weather delay and the ops center doesn't know how long the delay will be, they're not just going to fly there and circle around in bad weather patterns for hours until they are cleared to land. They divert, take on some extra fuel and then when things clear up, they go. Dallas sees a lot of very strong thunderstorms and micro-bursts in the summertime, which are good to avoid at any altitude, so the diversion was smart.
I live in NYC where we get hundreds to thousands of international flights and tens of thousands of domestic flights each day between all the airports and diversions happen all the time. Newark Liberty and LaGuardia are especially prone to weather diversions.
No one messed up this trip.
U sitting in the captains chair made me feel nervous
what I can not understand is why Boeing went back to a one level plane and not build a bigger version after the 747
From what I have read, airlines want smaller more fuel efficient planes so they can have more point to point flights vs having huge planes that all go to a hub with other connecting flights.
Good crew I bet TULSA was shocked to get a 787 I know they do not have the gate space for a 787. but good call for safety. Taking pictures and all since they prolly wont get another one plus the length of the runway too I am sure was a factor. Don't speed up the footage next time./
Actually, Tulsa is the main maintenance hub for AA so the 787 was there prior.
John Nolewajka ok makes sense but the space between gates there I am sure is not enough for a actually scheduled 787 flight.
Correct, purely maintenance.
I don't even like travelling backwards on a bus or train. I certainly wouldn't do it first class!!! Perhaps forward-facing seats are more expensive?!?
is it me or first class doesnt look like one anymore, whatever happened to wider seats and roomier area for vip passengers ?
This is actually a very nice first class product. The lie flat is the main feature for international flights.
I know today's first class gives you all kinds of amenities and entertainment but to me it looks tight, flat bed seats are common in most first class airliners, all I'm saying is that previous seats were wider
+Diego Erazo-Villao This is International Business Class, not International First Class. When it flies domestically, it is called Domestic First Class.
yea well my point is that even business class seating used to be more comfortable for both, domestic and international flights
just imagine being a "NOBODY" and dealing with that..... I think the Attitude would be a Little different!!!
is the wing supposed the curve upward so much like that? 22:01
YEP! During flight, the wing is above the cabin.
John Nolewajka i dunno about everyone else but that would freak me out, looks like the wing is gonna snap off. but im not an airplane engineer. but do you know why it does that?
Azzi Somazzi It is supposed to help with aero and efficiency. Plus, it looks really cool!
What is DFW?
Dallas Fort Worth airport
is it me or are you taxing very fast?
The crew gave you a tour of the cockpit ????!!!!! Are you serious ???!
I thought the crew was not allowed to show any cockpit on any aircraft in the USA since the 9/11 drama ?!!!
Here in Europe this is unbelievable and unexpectable !!!
Is there any Germanwings pilot in AA ??!!!! OMG !!! Visiting the cockpit !!! It scares me !!
We were on the ground waiting for fuel...
bobduvar yes, that is actually a normal practice for FIRST CLASS passengers. when youre on the ground waiting for fuel, it isnt that big of a deal. why? these flights carry air marshals. air marshals are armed federal agents, one in first class, another in coach. they blend in very well, only the crew knows who are the air marshals. the two air marshal are ONLY to speak and acknowledge each other as air marshals only in the event of an emergency. they might speak, but it would be a normal pleasantry, like hello, or, how are you doing? being nonchalant. what that means is the air marshal also got a tour of the cockpit. more than likely, the marshal was in the cockpit the whole time while others were getting their tour. so, no worries brother.
John Nolewajka great video, brother. this is hands down one of the best, period. i really appreciate your penchant for the little tiny details you posted. i am subscribing to you, hoping for me of these in the future, of other aircraft. its amazing how quick and and quiet those things beauty are. so much better than a scairbus. american horsepower at its finest.
Anyone can visit the cockpit on the ground when parked up, you just gotta ask the pilots and cabin crew. Don't be so shocked I live in the UK and do it almost every flight i fly on
+bobduvar You can only visit the cockpit before or after the flight, never during flight. You can't do much harm while you're parked at the gate. It happens all over the world, including the EU.
Herringbone backwards seat ... how is your neck after that ? I personally hate it because it depreciates the privilege of having a window seat.
Thanks for video though
+Saint Lazare I get the same seat because I can look at the wing and engine the whole flight. It's beautiful.
what was your seat number?
2L
Beautiful bird, but the new AA livery is awful. They should put the old Lightning Bolt on one of these new ones.
Great video! IMO, good accommodations, but not particularly great. The seat is almost the same as an economy seat, the only difference being a surrounding plastic cubicle, and a little more privacy. The food and drink were really not much different than coach or economy. Keeping in mind that it was a short flight, if I would have known what to expect, I would not have sprung for the first class ticket. What American should have done was offer a first or business class experience for all ticket holders at the same price. .
+Clifford Bodine Economy seats are 17.2" wide compared to 20" wide in Business. You have no neighbor. You get free noise-canceling headphones. You get lie-flat seat that reclines in unlimited ways. You don't even get a meal in Economy on that flight. You get 2 free checked bags. You get priority check-in, security and boarding privileges. You get a 100% bonus in frequent flyer miles. Shall I continue?
andre agassi
21:30 What was that? xD
did AA give you anything to eat? or another buy-a-snack service?
Yes, we got lunch. They serve lunch on all first class flights.
I wish there was a dress code.... every one looks like a bum.... and granny bought their ticket..
A dress code? Bugger that. I am paying thousands of dollars to sit comfortably, and I am going to dress however the heck I want.
I'd be willing to bet money to say that you were in the Admirals club...
Yes Sir!
John Nolewajka
Yeah I'm always there enjoying the high life with private showers and unlimited soda!
I would take this sweet sound of engines barely humming over Brittney Spears or Jay Z or whatever the crap is in these days.
St. Devil Airbus A350 is much quieter.
+Christopher Hall Not at all actually, the A350 has a much louder buzz than the 787.
+Quinn Hughes I'm sorry to say Quinn, but I beg to differ. The Airbus A380 and Airbus A350 are known for its silence Roll Royce's engine. Unless you can prove to me with fact or an actually link that gives informative comparisons, I would have to disagree.
Christopher Hall
wel'l have to look at what type of RR engines these planes are using and see which engine type is quieter than the other.
