    Had to run up to Dallas/Fort Worth with my father so he could earn his last set of AAdvantage points! Also earned my first 492 points with this trip! My first time in first class on any airline! I loved it, even though the flight was only 50 minutes! Sorry for the poor quality of the takeoff; I hadn't yet figured out how to film from that angle. Comments and suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks for watching!

    I love the MD80 series aircraft! love your video but will never fly on American again. because of a lack of help to get to my next gate at O'Hare, I was stranded over night. I had no money, no help. this was a terrifying experience as I am blind. I find American Airlines to be very insensitive to people with handicaps. on my flight the next day I could not even find my seat. they offered zero assistance to me. the flight attendants were very rude, I had a hard time even getting to the restroom. as far as the MD80, will fly on it anytime to anywhere, one of the best aircraft ever. you have to fly in one to know why it's nickname is the mad dog. thanks for a great video.

    I was not on any of these particular flights, but this brings me back to 2010. My mom, sister, and I flew American from Vancouver to San Antonio with a stop-over in Dallas in late June that year. The way you presented that night flight from Dallas to San Antonio on the MD-80 looks EXACTLY the way I remember our run.

      Actually, our flight back into Vancouver was postponed by one day because due to a security procedure, our flight into Dallas went ahead too late for us to catch our original connection. So we had to spend the extra night in Dallas. The mishap actually turned into a rather fun night in the end, however.

    The MD-80 is like no other; it has its own elegance and grace, even apart from that of the 747. She's a joy to fly on and I've always looked forward to every flight aboard one. As for the pilots of these aircraft: I call them 'MD-80 drivers', much like F-15/F-16 pilots are called 'drivers': you don't just 'fly' it...it's far better of an experience than that! It'll be a sad day when the last MD-80 completes her final passenger flight. On that day, she will die a lady.

    No drinks because of turbulence - a bit of a bummer there. Could be worse. The nastiest turbulence I've encountered was on Singapore's 747-400 from LAX to Hong Kong's old Kai Tak Airport in the last 1980s. The 747 jerked a full foot up like a toy plane! Was caught completely off guard (I did have my seat belt on, fortunately) and my breakfast tray spilled on my lap. So I landed in Hong Kong on a mostly empty stomach. Fast forward quite a few years. Trying to connect through Denver International. The flight is delayed for an hour because somebody probably overslept and they had to re-check the passenger rosters because security thought someone's luggage got on the plane without them. Fast forward another year. Tried to fly to O'Hare from DFW. The plane got pushed back and stayed on the tarmac, baking in the heat for an hour. The FAA calls the pilot. It's snowing blankets and blankets up there! O'Hare is closed. Flight cancelled! Bad luck always hits me when flying. I can never get a break.

    Good 'ol DFW. Don't know why but I always enjoyed flying into that airport. I guess because it's one of the nicer airports I've flown into in terms of cleanliness and hell of a lot of places to eat for those long layovers. Plus it's a very busy airport which means getting to watch a lot of planes go by. MCO is probably my other favorite airport to fly into for the same reasons. Just more...humid

I wish I could have filmed flying on TWA's Boeing 717 back in the early 2000s when I went on vacation. They didn't make a lot of them before TWA merged with American so it's kind of nice to have flown on something that not many people had with that particular airline.

      The Red Viper Well, that's ultimately why I make these videos. Sure, most adults today will have flown or will fly an MD-80 before they're gone, but for the generation of aviation enthusiasts after 2019, videos like these are all that will be left of the Mad Dog era.

    Great video. I thought I'd point out a couple things. You posted departure (late) times on take-off but departure times are based on the time the aircraft backs off tbe gate. The arrival time, similarity, is not based on when the plane lands but when it parks at the gate. Lastly, I hope your delay data wasn't meant to dis the airline - it was clearly a bad weather day (airlines cannot control weather). Otherwise it was fun to watch. I'm going to miss the MD-80's when they're gone, which at AA is expected just 2 years from now! Safe travels!

    • @AmericanAirDFW
      @AmericanAirDFW  Před 10 lety

      Oh, no, I didn't mean to dis AA, I just wanted to show the full experience, and the delays were part of that. If it was 15 minutes, I wouldn't have posted, but 45+ minutes definitely made a difference. Thanks for the suggestions by the way! Glad you enjoyed!

    In case anybody ever wondered why American Airlines always flew polished aluminum MD-80's. When I built these aircraft in the 70's & 80's as I remember, there was approx. a 235# or more weight savings by not having the plane painted. This translated into greater payload capacity. I thought that was a pretty clever cost cutting idea.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 Před 9 lety

      +Robert Fox I actually liked the bare metal look. I don't see that as often these days. I was a bit saddened that AA is now repainting more of their planes completely in light gray. Ugh. It doesn't look as attractive as polished metal. Plus I agree: all that extra paint means more weight so the engines have to guzzle more precious jet fuel.

    I live in Tulsa and used to live in OKC. My father was a pilot with AA from 1945-1970 when he passed away very young. I kind got the joke about the snack as I have flown so many times on AA, I couldn't even guess a number. Oh, how times have changed from the great flights of the 50's and 60's. I still had flight privilege for a few years after he died and everything started going to crap. Do you know there used to be jet service from Tulsa to Okc? 27 min. They wonder why they lost money.

    AA, DL & TW (American, Delta & TWA) all banked their short & medium hauls for the longest time on the MD80's as they became far more profitable than the aging B727's that were a 3 man cockpit versus the 2 man cockpit of the MD80's.
    With that said, that aircraft it's not as passenger and cabin crew friendly as the B727 or the B737. The MD80 is narrower, with less amount of seats per row, in coach is 2 x 3 abreast versus the B727 & B737 who are 3 x 3 abreast. The overhead compartments for carry-on and storage in the MD80 are totally inadequate versus the B727 & B737, the aft galley on the MD80 is a trap, as it's positioned with passenger seat around it with the lavatories further in back creating total gridlock in the area.
    Design wise, the engines in the tail in winter time if not deiced properly, chunks of ice flying off the wings can damage the blades of the turbines, rendering them powerless, possibly causing a catastrophe!
    I dreaded every time I had to work that bird!!!

    Kids, don't ever sit in the back on an MD-80, I had to do that once and the whole cabin was rumbling because the engines are right there next to your head. And it was loud, I could barley hear anyone the whole flight from DFW to MCO.

    • @dagmak5988
      @dagmak5988 Před 9 lety

      weizapasan True true. But the amount of arm space is greater, so it's actually more comfortable than a 737, at least the 737s that Southwest uses. I actually found the MD-80 on American to be way more comfortable than any A320, 737, or 777 I took on American.

    • @weizapasan
      @weizapasan Před 9 lety

      ***** I have sat at the dead front of the coach section on both a B717 and an MD-80 and yes, it is much more comfy there.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 Před 9 lety

      +syd boeing syd, is it my imagination or is there actually more space (due to seat positions) on an MD80 than a 757? I once flew an AA 757 and was shocked that it felt MORE cramped than the MD80. And it doesn't "ride out" turbulence as well. The MD80 is always smoother in flight even in crappy weather. I guess it's because the engines are bolted to the fuselage on the rear rather than hanging off the wings but I don't know if it has a lot to do with the ride.
