- Are you familiar with the wet in wet or the wet on wet technique in watercolour? It's a great way to add softness to your watercolor painting and soft edges. Here I paint a scene from Staithes in North Yorkshire and show this technique several times.

In this demo I will be covering...
1) Choice of Subject. What makes a good watercolor subject. How to simplify the scene.
2) Materials I use such as the paper. I will also cover the paints I use and the palette, plus how I hold the different brushes for different techniques.
3) Doing the outline sketch as the first step. How to draw boat shapes.
4) Doing the sky and the first wash of the background and then the foreground.
5) Using wet-in-wet in the sky area and in the water reflections.
6) Watch out for the smaller brush at the end and highlighting tips.

Thank you again for sharing this. I love how the initial coloured washes flow down in bright colours only to be tamed and subdued in the natural drying process and how gradually through your skill the atmospheric scene unfolds. I was lucky enough as a young boy to be taken by my grandad who was a watercolour artist in Norfolk to see the great Edward Seago at his house in Ludham. I also visited on two occasions the broadside studio of Roland Green, another great watercolour artist. Regards
Wow..to Seago, what a treat. Thanks for your kind comments on the painting process on this one. Do you paint?
@@TimWilmot Hi Tim I haven't painted in about 40 plus years. But did stone sculpture. but the last few months I have started watercolour painting again and have really enjoyed it. Thanks to your videos I have become more free in my execution. Still along way to go yet but I am improving . I have found I enjoy smaller paper sizes say 10x14 at the moment . Regards Andy
Another amazing tutorial. Thanks for sharing Tim!
Thanks Marcello
Great scene and another wonderful watercolour demo!! Nice work Tim
Thanks Dave
Beautiful demonstration. You’re so good at putting the practice into words.
Thanks Jared
Great video. It’s amazing how much detail you have without being tedious or fussing.
The detail is implied
Great stuff. Love that misty/smokey effect on the shoreline. Thanks.
Glad you liked it
What a magical painting Tim
I love your colour selection especially on the buildings
Louise

I love your paintings Tim, have been painting for about 10 years but not had any formal training just from you tube, your explanations are so helpful, thankyou so much for sharing, you have helped enormously with understanding how I could paint more loosely.

Didn't realise it was Staithes in Yorkshire, I've got some pics from when I was there. Will have to have a go and paint, it really is a lovely place!
It may be up on my Patreon site as a project soon
Well done Tim. !,
Thanks Ron. I see your great paintings up on FB. Fantastic rural scenes
Great art
Thanks Tushar
Great tutorial, fine art!
Thanks a lot!
wow!!!
Thanks
From caterpillar to butterfly in no time at all , wow again.
Thanks
Great tutorial, as always. Love your loose style, though personally I would not add so much small brush detail at the end - but that's no more than a stylistic issue. The coble is notable for its high deep bow, and long, low and narrow stern, suitable for beach launchings.
Thanks Rick and good point
Thanks Tim. As always, it is another great watercolor !
Cok tessekur
Wonderful1
Thanks
Hello sir. It's an honour to have you as a Great teacher like u.thank u sir.i m from India.vishal Bhasker

Loving wet into wet demo. What size do you recommend in the Raphael for the big and smaller brush. 8 for big and 2 for smaller. I want to try this picture. Thank you.
Yes Bonnie. Maybe get a 4 as well
Learned a lot from you. Thank you for your dedication to your art and our learning. Could you please let me know what are those brushes you use.
Which ones? The main one is raphael softaqua
@@TimWilmot Bingo! Thank you. Mr. Wilmot have you ever had 'painters block' something like 'writers block'? I can't seem to get back into it. Thank you for yr response.
Hello. I really like your wotk. Please tell me, do you always use a maximum of two layers?
Yes. Rarely 3
Thanks, very nice
Tim, I am very impressed by your painting and I feel that I'm learning a number of techniques that will improve my efforts. I do feel that the overall experience would be enhanced significantly if you would add some vocal variety to your descriptions. Your pauses are excellent. I would encourage you to bring more energy to your vocal presentation. Aim to have the vocal presentation match the kinesthetic element of your teaching.
Can you recommend a speech coach?
@@TimWilmot Let's have a Zoom chat about it. I'm in Waterloo Ontario. What's a good time for you, given our 5 hour time difference? Cheers
Please tell the most important color of watercolor paint and link address.
Do a search for ultramarine blue
I've neverf used Saunders. Expensive. Does Arch's dry as slowly?
I am sorry but I don't know
It's very interesting why the boats are called cobles en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coble
Thanks
why bother making a picture of a picture. Wasn't the original good enough ?
James anonymous why did you bother typing a useless question, plenty of artists take pictures for reference photos to use as a subject study. did you learn something, ffs i hope so
...Well I guess that's why he is 'anonymous' with a stupid comment like that. Thanks Dianna!!!
I had to laugh when I saw your reply!!!!! Nice one.
