  • How do you go about simplifying a street scene? What to include and what to exclude when trying to paint in a loose style. Here is a complex scene from Venice and a how to video on keeping things simple.

In this demo I will be covering...
    1) Choice of Subject. What makes a good watercolor subject. How to simplify the scene.
    2) Materials I use such as the paper. I will also cover the paints I use and the palette, plus how I hold the different brushes for different techniques.
    3) Doing the outline sketch as the first step. How to draw figures and getting the perspective correct.
    4) Doing the sky and the first wash of the background and then the foreground.
    5) Shadows and details of the buildings and bridge (whilst trying to keep things simple!).
    6) Watch out for the highlighting tips.

Your brush control is something else, Tim. I have a Raphael SoftAqua Quill so I know how it behaves (or misbehaves in my case). To carve out that clean tapered curve under the bridge as you did -- in essentially two strokes? Bravo!

Unique! I was sure it couldn't work. Nothing obsessive about your technique. Amazed with the result. Your calm instruction is appealing. Thank you so much.

The building on the right is not an archive.... it's the Frari church (Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari), after S. Marks the second most important church in Venice and contains Titian's masterpiece The Assumption of the Virgin. Worth a visit next time you are in Venice.

May I donate a virtual leg, so the poor person on the right doesn’t tumble into the drink?
