This is a great film. Just great film. Main character / great actor.
I feel like Fassbinder. You have been traumatized shocked. But you need to overcome your circumstances. They can make sequels from this character.
Some people can identify with the alienation in any occupation. Consultant, CEO, lawyer, etc we have to do what we need to succeed.

as always a thoughtful and enjoyable review Maggie but i didn't find myself disappointed with this film even though i had reservations going in due to the mixed reviews i had seen. I found it compelling and captivating right from the off. That first chapter is a masterclass in editing and tension building. It stood apart almost as the best sequence of the film and could be a short in and of itself. From then on i was sold on the premise and following the excellent Fassbender and his inner workings and physical manifestations. Whilst not a masterpiece it is a solid 4starr review for me and i would go back to it again as i am sure there is smaller details to be enjoyed a second time round.

First of all, English is not my native language so I will do my best to express myself clearly.
I haven't seen the movie yet but even just by watching the trailer I felt that the movie was going to be exactly as described here: a compendium of situations and dialogues that we have already seen dozens of times in the past, made, without a doubt, with the sobriety and mastery characteristic of Fincher, but ultimately unrewarding. However, I feel that this is the type of film that many will applaud because it is "dark" and "gritty", and has some of the sensationalist impact of Se7en, compared to Zodiac, a more atmospheric and cryptic but far superior film.
PS: Congratulations on your work. Most other channels tend to focus on more mainstream movies or just what is trendy at the moment and often have a kind of fixed parameters with which they make their reviews, however, this channel's reviews usually explore more the synergy of a movie, the chemistry between its different components and the sensory experience they offer us. This is without a doubt, at least for me, the best English language movie review channel on YT.

This film is very interesting to watch through the key of criticism of the modern world of big business.
If you would change the guns and knives in it to pens and papers, and the assassinations, to hostile takeovers and elimination of competitors, then "The Killer" is a wonderful study of the rat race and uncompromising business war.
One in which outsiders ("normies") are just an insignificant background. In which one mistake can cost you years of building your position. In which there are always several other, equally uncompromising people waiting to take your place, and your every move, even the unsuccessful ones, is calculated into stakes and reduced to heartless procedures, the final result of which must always be - profit.
The mantra repeated by the protgonist:
    "Stick to your plan.
    Anticipate, don't improvise.
    Trust no one.
    Never yield an advantage.
Fight only the battle you're paid to fight."
sounds like something taken straight out of a couching manual for the 21st century version of yuppies. Business "dudes" bred by hyper-capitalism, seduced by the world of billionaires. Slim gentlemen in suits more expensive than cars equating success with perfectionism in achieving business goals. Rejecting the empathy and humanity of those standing in the way of their goal.
"Each and every step of the way, ask yourself, "What's in it for me?" This is what it takes. What you must commit yourself to. If you want to succeed. Simple."

Hope this is pretty good. Been too long since I’ve seen Fassbender in a solid, satisfying film and that’s an actor I have lots of respect for.
Fincher is like Nolan for me; certain films of his I’m crazy about but ones like Fight Club and Gone Girl get way too much attention (and the former got almost none when released despite following Se7en and The Game)

Haven’t seen it yet (will wait for Netflix) but agree that the trailers didn’t look interesting to me at all, which is a shame because I do really like Fincher. Part of this movie was shot like 15 minutes from where I live so that’ll be fun to see I guess

i think most people feel this way because they're watching the surface level. The movie gets deeper the more you think about it. Personally i thought it was very interesting how this normal joe killer had to come up with this code that basically makes him a psychopath. As he breaks his code his humanity and conscience begin to seep back in.
    SPOILERS*
It's the inverse of most serial killer or assassin movies, where they get more and more desensitized with every kill until they murder/kill like its nothing,. In the killer, the protagonist became more and more empathic with every kill.
In the opening when he accidently shot the civilian, he said "fuck" in the same way someone says "oops" when they dropped their coffee. but he broke his code so next time,
He shoots the lawyer with the nail gun (who turned out to be the ultimate villain) and gave him the chance to call 911. He thought of a torture method that he could bring with him. But he made a mistake and he died too quickly. He did not have much empathy here either.
He then snapped the secretaries head and made it look like she fell down the stairs just like she requested, showing some level of empathy, albeit very low.
The kid in the taxi cab. He is very cold in his executions and efficient, but there was a second before he shot the taxi driver that he paused, he didn't shoot and he considered what the victim was saying. He broke his code again.
the next one was the big guy, where he could have killed the dog to make his life much easier, but he came up with an elaborate plan to put it to sleep, and then out ran it instead of shooting it. He really had to improvise to get away from the dog.
The q tip woman, he could have killed her and she knows it, but at this point he basically killed her in self defense.
And finally he let the billionaire go. As he has completed his arc and become one of the many. But q tip was haunting him at the end. Does he kill for the sake of it? does he like getting fucked by the bear?
Also, i loved how this examined several people in their last moments. You think the dialogue is uninspired but i thought the dialogue of someone staring down death is all in the acting, and the way they try to get out of it and squirm and plead, is fascinating. That's not really something most people will ever see in their lives so seeing it here in the close up is always fascinating from an acting stand point, because that's a really dark place to put yourself in to draw up inspiration for that character in that moment.
Its a great movie, one of his best, and I think it will age very well despite these initial impressions.

I’ve already agreed with the idea that the best heist movies are allegories for the filmmaking process. The Killer here feels like an allegory of a career in Hollywood. Everything is great, you have your method of repeating success until that method eventually fails through no fault of your own. Then all the studio executives scheme to destroy you while you stick to your guns and then end up doing their job better than them until you reach the top brass who is so far removed from your work that he barely knows who you are. Fincher, like the protagonist is also financially free of the need to continue his line of work in an industry growing more and more hostile to his talents and has to wrestle with his reasons for going on.
Le Samurai meets Point Blank with a dash of Jarmusch’s The Limits of Control thrown in.

  • @GizmoBeach
    @GizmoBeach Před 4 měsíci

Finally got to see this; renewed my Netflix subscription to watch S-6 of The Crown and to see a few items.
The Killer didn't fascinate me as much (overall when it was over) as similar films such as The Limits of Control in which a taciturn and methodical assassin is the main character. In the film "Frank" Mr. Fassbender is hidden under a mask for most of the picture; in The Killer it's his actual speaking voice that we don't get to hear for most of the picture. That was an amusing contrast of sorts.
Not much action but I didn't expect there would be. However if we compare this to Fincher's "Panic Room" or Soderbergh's "Haywire" in which Fassbender plays a small but important role of an assassin on a shared mission...well there ain't no comparison as to which films are more engaging and which one's dry and lacks a compelling story other than "several weeks in the life of a fit but ho-hum hitman." And the fake ID's being mostly 70's TV show characters became rote rather quickly as did the ubiquitous popular Smiths' music.

I'd love to see Fassbender as the jovial friend next door in a sitcom. In my head he's playing it as a normal version of that role 90% of the time, except there are these moments where the mask slips and he looks utterly defeated and hollow.

Speaking of French contributions to neo-noir, Melville's "Le Samouraï" (1967) would seem to be the more "inspired" inspiration: still the brighter teacher to a duller student.

theres a lot of people rushing to say its deeper than the rest of us think but i think the core problem is that the point the film is making is at odds with a fun movie experience. modern life sucks is boring, mundane, the mystique is gone etc...........ok that ends up reflecting in the film. to show how boring and mundane things are we are subjected to it on screen. not that interesting or fun...some of the riffs and ways a hitman functions in modern life are interesting but in a novelty kind of way like oh of course he'd use a wework instead of airbnb or buying parts of amazon same day thats funny..fincher is often smirking behind the camera throughout his filmography ......he's doing it here again IMO ,,,,, unfortunately the end result is disappointing . agreed with your assessment

I also thought there was a spiritual aspect to thw lead character, where his vocation is almost like his religion, and his code/rules equate to a mantra he repeats several times to himself, almost like a prayer.... there is complete teverance and devotion to his craft/religion/God...

  • @plath1756
    @plath1756 Před 6 měsíci +1

Your review depressed me. Then I watched the second half of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and, somewhat predicably, it didn't help. Also, the early reception for Next Goal Wins is bad. So maybe American culture peaked in the 50's and since then we've been on the slow slide back to butchery? That's the last decade that had men still wearing suits after all... Only now we're more than merely dangerous monkeys, we're monkeys with banjos, chain saws and the bomb. And maybe America's biggest gift to Civilization was cinema, which peaked in the 70's when it recorded our society's first conscious glance in mirror. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre certainly seems to be saying something like that: we can no longer hide who we are.
Wow. What an influential film. 10/10. I especially appreciated the static, slogging quality to the extended chase scenes, how instead of carefully choreographing play by play action, it sticks to the nightmare basics: you're being chased, you're screaming your lungs bloody, death is inevitable... So have a little patience, please!
All the metaphors you mentioned were right on. Nice. I kinda feel like Steven Spielberg took a lot of inspiration from this movie in crafting Jaws' allegorical structure. Only, being Spielberg, he took out the social commentary and leaned into the primal nature metaphor until the villain completely lost its humanity and became a shark.
Thanks for the recommendation. But I'm watching The Killer in the theater because Netflix is the ketchup of cinema: cheap, red, and guaranteed to destroy your palate. No thanks!

It's a shame if people don't make the connection between Archibald Bunker, Felix Unger, Oscar Madison, Ruben Kinkaid and finally Dr. Robert Hartley - which the killer uses when he is in Chicago no less!! 🤣

And then the moral: The Killer is shown to have a very routined Day to Day when he does a job, do a bit of Yoga every Day, eat what nutrates you, never less never more, dont dress extravagantly, watch out for your heart rate, only relax when you can go Home on vacation, find you job boring, only Fight the battle you were paid for etc.
He therefore portrays all of us. And his Actions portray all of our Actions. In our society it is near impossible to act in a way that doesnt harm anybody. When you buy a iPhone. When you buy the milk from the Discounter. When you buy shirts from bangladesh. When your amazon delivery is delivered by an vastly underpaid Immigrant. We dont fly to venezuela and push the Kids down the mine ourselfs. We dont *a** the cows ourselves. We dont travel to bangladesh and assist the overworked woman with **ic**e, We dont force the immigrant to live in his near-homeless conditions.
But our actions lead to that anyways. Only difference is the Killer travels himself.

Boring movie. I did not feel anything along the movie. They put the subtext over the actually story. The story is very thin and what happened have seen already a lot of times. 20min talking with themself, was too much. And I hoped for a kind of kick start. But it changed barely the tempo during the movie. And the whole story is just not believable how it told. Why did he return to this house, knowing that there could people find and kill him? Why went he to the hospital without any intent to stay undetected, what we see in a lot of other movies of the same kind.
Why didn't he kill the main target, after all that what he went through? That scene with Tilda Swinton felt unnatural. Because it was so unnecessary to talk with her. Compare this with Heat and Robert de Niro and Al Pacino. They were actually interested in each other.

I was really disappointed with this movie.
It's cold (as always) and lacks realism. Sure It's from a comic but Fincher himself said in an interview that he put himself in the head of a hitman and that's ridiculous to say the least.
The movie felt completely outdated to me.

I saw the movie today at an Everyman cinema in the UK. It’s a good entertainment, it’s not a thriller with a moral/philosophical message like A Simple Plan or No Country for Old Men, you just have to take it for what it is, a suspense thriller with a bit of action, like a modern day Le Samourai. Other characters only exist to be killed. The movie isn’t a commentary of any kind, it’s just about a guy with certain beliefs.

    **SPOILERS BELOW**
The scene with Swinton imposes something unto the Killer we had no reason to really think before: The story about the hunter and the bear (if I understand it right) asserts that Killer is actually on this revenge quest to seek some meaning in his life beyond what he claims in his voiceover about apathy and nihilism...however, we have no reason prior to this to believe this to be the case. Therefore, the scene falls flat. Maybe someone can correct me on that.
Another thing I didn't get ..why did they just "beat up" his girlfriend? It seems awfully tame for an international crime syndicate, you'd assume they'd torture her until she gave up his whereabouts. It just seems like a strange setup.... and then they have the protagonist do something unforgivable in killing a completely innocent taxi driver for no real reason.
The film felt very unfocussed both morally and narratively.

No No No, you got it all wrong:
First Up, they only Beat her up, because she Managed to escape before worse, so they had to bounce.
      Then The diner scene:
Whereas the Brute was a physical bossfight, with the Audio portraying his steps and swings as giant-like where the Killer was completely soundless, and his punches slow and hard-hitting but the Killer almost catlike, The Expert offers a mental challenge.
She is disarmed First thing, but still a threatening presence is felt. Because unlike the Brute, she doesnt look very killer-like, her expertise has to be in another, more hidden, quality, or she would be able to be a killer at all. The spectator knows that, and feels that the protagonist is in a looming danger. Everything, from her drinking the wine to talking to the waiter could be a set-up for her to escape and Kill him instead.
And the whole time talking to him, she challenges the strength of his mind. Its made very obvious in the garden, where she Straight up tells him, she wishes to be the last thing to flash before his eyes in his final moment. Also she implies to be innocent of the condition his wife is in, appealing to his empathy. And questions his moral as a whole, and mocks him for his failure. And in this Kind of mental attack context the bear scene has to be interpreted. It is but another trick of her, which he sees right through, offering No real Reaction. Of course the Hunter in the story is supposed to be the Killer, going to miss again and again, and going to be humiliated again and again. But it has No real world tie, its is just to aggravate him/ make him talkative.

If the film didn't have Swinton, Fincher, and Fassbender's names attached to it, I think most people who've skipped it entirely. Too many reviews are "the film was so blank and neutral you get to project your own imagination onto it" as though that's the greatest movie theme ever.
The lack of character development, the lack of meaningful plot twists or arcs or surprises, made it a dull "6/10" standard double-crossed assassin roaring rampage of revenge plot.
I'm pretty sure Swinton was drinking real whisky in that scene to try and get through the plodding and slogging movie. The killer himself repeating his "mantras" over and over with loud hamfist voiceover monologues is more 14 year old school shooter edgelord territory, rather than "showing how a human makes themself a professional killer"
The random "beaten but not killed or crippled" girlfriend character that's shoehorned in was supposed to be his motivation for revenge rather than just disappearing I guess.

@@cavscout43 Do people really say that the film is good because you can project your imagination onto it? There's no sense of intended ambiguity in the film. It's pretty straightforward and tightly structured enough to be clear about what it's exactly about (so much to the point of dividing itself into clear chapters, even if it might be an homage to the source material). The chain of events is connected to a central point in the prologue and how the main conflict is resolved is explicit without much suspense.
It's so barebones it was probably intentional when you relate it to the rest of Fincher's filmography and his quotes about conventionality. A better analysis is that the movie essentially mimics the protagonist's values of being as straightforward and simple as possible. You end up with an overall decent completion of a task. Makes me wonder if Fincher's trying to mock people adhering to strict conventions. It's kind of funny because the end quote reveals that Fincher believes that people who do such as are all the same, regardless of how talented they might be.

I've said it elsewhere but my biggest problem with Fincher is how he frames himself and his films as fringe outsider works, making people 'uncomfortable' in his own words.
A lot of his films are quite mainstream or even lowbrow thriller types, but he thinks of himself as a Michael Hanake.
He's very Gen X, lots of snark and all very slick, but his films hardly make me think or lose sleep.

This is Fincher's worst, sorry for the fans, as I was hoping for something more, something special. While it was shot decently, it didn't offer anything new, like he did with Se7en, Zodiac, or even the Game. Also, the script, was the weakest and and didn't say anything new. Watch "You were never really here" as it's far better in same premise and execution.

  • @retlwiz

Fincher now falls for me into the category of overrated directors and I agree that this movie and Mank are nowhere near the level he used to produce. The usual Fincher look was there but poorly executed and the script, especially the voiceover and dialogue just made me cringe - that scene in the restaurant being a good example. At the start I couldn’t work out if he was deliberately supposed to be kidding himself or he was genuinely supposed to be cool - the way he set up in a Paris flat (obviously fake views) with a big window with the light on was just stupid, as was the way he missed the shot - and the monologue voiceover was also total cringe - so on the nose. But then Fincher never has been that subtle - just stylish, when he had the right script and right cinematographer, which were lacking here, in my view. I’m a fan of Fassbender but the wardrobe choices did him no favours and he has a slightly silly run from certain angles - why film him that way?

As someone who doesn't like Fincher that much, and thought he didn't make a good film until The Social Network, The Killer was a breath of fresh air. After Mank, I wanted him to prove he still had it, and this stripped-down, lean and mean thriller is exactly what I wanted. It's not amazing by any means, but it's a strong aesthetic piece that is an artistic comeback in my mind

It reminds me of the superior Killing Them Softly, In that both are process movies starring hitman, and both feel like over-long introductions to movies that never happen. Just when you think the story might start, it's over. Beautiful looking, extremely well made, nothing underneath the hood.

I liked Fight Club but it can’t be discussed now (lol, get it?) without having to slug through some self-important third-wave feminist lecture about its celebration of “toxic masculinity.” The rest of his movies leave me cold, and even the ones I like have a slickness and artificiality to them I don’t like. Based on the review on this channel, I’m putting this one at the bottom of the must watch list.
