I played one of the kids in the opening party scene I actually originally auditioned for role of Cole as well. And wow oh wow this film did NOT dissapoint from start to finish it had me on the edge of my seat and makes any of the newer horror films in comparison pretty lame I'm honoured to have been such a small part in bringing this amazing vision to life
I had an hour conversation with my neighbor about the ending of this movie. We were both doing yard work, and we stopped to just debate the ending. This movie is great
Anytime that happens....means the movie was impacting...🎯🎯🎯💯
I hope you each stayed on your own sides of the fence, while that fence obscured one of your faces, while having this conversation
she died at the end, right?
As an aussie, Its surreal seeing a film from home blow up this big, especially the accent and slang being used authentically and not softened for overseas audiences
Tbf I think if that ending twist didn't kick in, the film wouldnt have stuck the landing.
I drove for hours after seeing this film. It still lingers, and it is definitely one of the greatest films of this year. Easily the best horror film.
I dunno..., Pearl was pretty dope.
It's definitely catching on! It's so exciting when the buzz around a festival film is actually warranted. I loved it and actually felt a bit rattled by it in a really exciting way. I love that the film doesn't waste time justifying the supernatural aspect to us. We don't have to go through the process of "she discovers it's real; nobody believes her; things happen; then they believe her about an hour later." We are just told "this is the world we're living in for the next 90 minutes; just go with it" and then we do. I also love that even though the drug metaphor is very prevalent, the film isn't heavy handed about it or trying to moralize about it. Mia is particularly vulnerable and in a state of grief, and so the drug becomes a coping mechanism for her; instead of dealing with the death of her mom, she wants to dull the pain and escape into a fantasy where her mom is there and able to talk to her. Most of the other kids are fine and able to enjoy the party drug without going too far, until they're forced to deal with the firsthand effects of an overdose, so to speak.
I’m so happy you enjoyed this film. I’m not a big fan of gore, ironically, I prefer horror films that are more psychological in nature with deeper layers. The filmmakers have already shot a prequel, and hopefully A24 will pick that up as well.
Finally I just watched it. Excellent film. Although I was expecting an absolute blood bath, this movie pulled some strings I didn’t foreseen, specially in the emotional aspect, about grief, teenage angst and loneliness. Beautifully executed. I’ll watch it again. It’s violent but not as violent some people try to paint it. It’s not Terrifier 2. This is on the same level of The Orphanage or The Others. It’s a thoughtful film. And I think the main girl could become famous eventually. She’s not only very beautiful but also an excellent actress.
Maggie, you are EASILY the best reviewer in the game! Always the most interesting and most intellectual! ❤❤❤❤
Lol dude down bad
thank you for mentioning it follows because it reminded me of it too! i think i’m in the very specific minority who were terrified by it but talk to me invoke similar horror within the filmmaking as that one did. it’s intense and frightening but always so focused. it follows is a violent unknown walking to you, talk to me is one that speaks.
By no means a bad movie. I just feel like there’s so much more potential. Wanted to see more of the other side. More demons terrorizing, everyone’s experiences, etc. Tight ending. I did enjoy it. Just wished it pushed further.
apparently there was more footage of the hellscape but they thought it went to far and broke the pacing, but similar to Event Horizon there are flashes of images from the longer version strewn throughout the scene. They may also have an extended cut. I think it was enough to have just a taste of hell and let our mind extrapolate based on what we did see
Getting such a small depiction of the hellscape was for the better, in my opinion, left way more to the imagination.
Nah I think it's much more grounded the way that it is. The point of the movie is the reality of Mia's pain - delving too deep into the horror metaphor wouldve taken away from the weight of that reality.
For me, this film fell into the "I liked what I saw but I wanted more" category. Nonetheless, I am very excited to see what these filmmakers do next. Films like _Picnic At Hanging Rock,_ _The Babadook,_ and _Talk To Me_ make me want to see Australia become one of leaders in the horror genre.
Wolf Creek makes a very worthy addition to this list.
I would recommend animal kingdom and the rover, both Australian.
OMG, this is the most perfect review of Talk to Me that I've seen. Amazing thoughts Deep Focus!
I enjoyed this movie, too. The set-up is wonderfully creative and provides a spin to the possession storyline that's been done to death. I personally feel like where it goes from there could've been more creative, as the way the story progresses feels a little cliched for my taste. However, the performances are really good, especially the lead performance by Sophie Wilde, and the direction by the Philippous is so effective that it makes me forget some of the shaky plot elements. I hope this doesn't get exploited into a run-of-the-mill horror franchise, but we shall see. For now, it's the best horror film of the year.
I love how the characters in this movie aren’t doing stupid things for the story everything made so much sense in context
I just got home from the theater and I do agree with your review. Really engaging and scary. Cool how the shocking opening sequence gets used later on. One question I always have about your set: Why don't you flip the screen so the book titles are right? Drives me nuts! 🙂
Thanks for your review. I've been wanting your opinion on "On the silver globe" and it's on YT at the moment
I absolutely agree. Movie was a thrilling revelation, one of the more exciting experiences I’ve had at the movies in the recent past (Oppenheimer aside; that was pretty exciting, too).
Maggie, if you’re a John Woo fan, you MUST review Hard Boiled and The Killer!
I’d even suggest the director’s cut of Hard Target.
Love your videos. Watching from Scotland.
"... like lovers do..."
Totally unrelated, but just happen to be listening to "The Eurythmics" as I'm typing this.
Stopped when you mentioned spoilers and went straight to the cinema. As an Australian I can say the acting felt very realistic, how did they get kids to overcome their teenage self consciousness and give such natural performances.
OMG! I knew the Racka Racka guys would be directing movies, they are so talented
Felt very “meh” to me. I didn’t dislike or regret seeing it, but something didn’t latch on properly for me. Maybe I didn’t attend enough parties as a kid, or maybe I was a little tired going in and the tropes dulled my perception. Strangely though I don’t feel compelled to watch it again to see what I missed. Maybe someday.
The last 5 seconds is completely brilliant. I was so ecstatic and pumped when the credits rolled.
Just got done with my review also.... Wow... What a movie.... And for a debut! Can't wait to see what they do next.
A friend told me to watch this, so I came to your channel and looked up the review, and @1:21 you tell me to just go back and watch it. lol 🙃
As an avid horror fan I really enjoyed this movie. Loved the way it ended, plus paying to see a movie like this in theaters supports independent filmmakers.
When I first saw the trailer I was kind of iffy about it but after watching a couple reviews and finding out who made it I went to go see it on Sunday and I wasn't disappointed
I definitely liked it. And while it was a supporting role, I thought that Zoe Terakes was truly impressive.
Australia makes some of the best bleak/hopeless/depressing major films - RomperStomper, Animal Kingdom and Snowtown all evoked dat feeling of impending prison suicide in all the best ways that implies for 🤌-tier kino
11:22 😈
I'll see it soon, remember watching some RackaRacka videos on CZcams years ago. They reminded me of video ideas friends and I would come up with in High School. If you were to tell me to guess the genre of movies they'd end up making I would've said Marvel or John Wick-esque action movies without a second thought so this film is a pleasant surprise.
Also, I'm guessing this channel is never doing a "Past Lives" review? 😢
The ending was amazing! What a trip!
You rock, my friend. And this movie is spectacular. Amazing characters and writing. Very focused.
I just noticed: Are you filming mirror-inverted...? 😯 (The titles on the books are inverted.)
Great as always
I understand that there is no direct connection between this video and my comment. Nonetheless, I would like to know your thoughts on my criticisms of RRR. If you have the time, please reply to me so that I can determine whether my criticisms are fair or not. I hold a lot of respect for you. Your response would enable me to understand your opinion, which would greatly aid in my learning. 🙏🙏
RRR is a good film with really good artistic elements. The attention to detail in its production is praiseworthy. While the overall filmmaking is impressive, I personally find RRR to be overrated. Allow me to explain my perspective on the film's shortcomings.
RRR is 7/10 for me
1) RRR, despite excelling in its grand set pieces and impressive action sequences, has some parts that are overly exaggerated and look unconvincing. Additionally, certain moments in the climax can be deemed ridiculous, leading to a slight disconnection for me as a viewer. While I appreciate over-the-top action sequences, I find some scenes to be particularly unconvincing and fake in their execution, especially in the climax. And I didn't find the climax of RRR interesting overall, and I also didn't like the action choreography of the climax.
2) The portrayal of the villain could have been greatly improved, from his character to his dialogues. Despite my anticipation, I found him to be utterly artificial. In Rrr, we encounter the same clichéd villain archetype.I couldn't help but perceive him as overly contrived and reminiscent of a cartoon. There was an absence of any genuine sense of danger emanating from him. The way he spoke his lines felt forced.
A more meticulous construction of the villain's character is warranted.(btw RIP ray Stevenson🕊️)
in Bahubali, bhallaldeva was strong and powerful villain character that's why the Bettle of the last one seems very equal . However, in RRR, the final battle was well choreographed but heavily one-sided. you can built villain's character in a better way like Leonardo DiCaprio's character in Django Unchained. Despite being cruel and over the top, DiCaprio's acting made him a genuinely menacing antagonist. He felt like a direct threat to our hero. Unfortunately, this sense of danger was missing in RRR's villain and he was very CRINGY
3)I didn't find the characters of RRR very interesting, and they didn't captivate me as much. While they were not one-dimensional, They had some depth as well(Here, I am specifically talking about the character of Ram)but overall, I didn't find the characters of rrr that much unique, intresting and with as much depth .They could have been written in a better and more nuanced way.The character of Bheem seemed weaker to me compared to the character of Ram, and it felt very two-dimensional.
It is not necessary that every character in a movie should be deep and complex for me to enjoy them. Relatability and connection also matter to me. Unfortunately, I couldn't establish a strong connection with the characters of RRR, and I couldn't connect with their friendship that much. In my opinion, their friendship lacked emotional depth and a real connection. Their "DOSTI" was portrayed through generic songs and montages, but it could have been shown in a different way to depict their bond.
I appreciate well-characterized, and intriguing characters in movies. However, the characters in RRR felt demi gods type of characters similar to what I've seen in other Indian films. It's challenging for me to connect with such demi-god-like character. in certain instances, their efforts to be believable came across as unconvincing and cringeworthy. But the chemistry between the two ACTORS was mostly good
4) the humor and jokes presented in Rrr was not good(Bad/CRINGY). you will get to she this in many indian films that a desi boy falls in love with a foreign girl ,but our desi boy does not know how to speak English which creates comedy, whole name pronouncing thing was so lame and such an old trick to create comedy
5) The overall acting was good in many places, and it was very good in some places as well. For example, in Komuram Bheemudo, NTR's acting is really good, but in some places, it feels forced and not at all believable. and the second half of rrr is kind of unintresting, predictable and compilation of cliches and There are certain scenes in
RRR where no rational argument can justify or provide a logical reason for the occurrences or the believability of those scenes. BUT
6)On a positive note, the song "Komuram Bheemudo" in RRR stands out, conveying the message that true freedom stems from unity among people, not just from weapons. This event also emphasizes the role of art and poetry in India's independence struggle.
However, the film's conclusion felt UNREALISTIC and COMICAL, as only the two heroes managed to defeat all the British characters. While their union symbolizes unity but it would have been more impactful if bheem had rallied the support of the people who caused an uproar and saved him from punishment to rescue ram.
RRR doesn't say anything new or interesting about its main themes of "friendship" and "freedom." But i appreciate Rajamouli's prioritization of words over guns, revolution over violence, and friendship over rivalry
While I understand that movies like RRR are meant to celebrate friendship and freedom rather than explore them, and it was enjoyable but at some points it was over-exaggerated and cringy also
Rrr is not really something new; it's kind of a CHECKLIST-TYPE movie, but it tries to present those familiar elements in the best possible way, which is why it has worked for so many people.
Oh my gosh dude, this was like wayyyyyyyy better than Barbarian.
Loved this movie so much. Great review as usual 🙌
Fair enough, I'll catch this video later!
4 videos in 2 weeks!!! 💪💪💪💪
Really excited for this one
Talk To Me?
I thought this was a remake of the 2007 Don Cheadle film!
Evidentially, it is not. But this review from DFL has got me most curious. Especially when she says this is a film that makes you ask yourself what you would do in the same situations...
hello! great content
Planning to watch this
Solid film! Love the ending.
I stopped watching this review when you told me to, 'cause I was really anxious to experience the film without spoilers. I finally saw it and now I'm back. I must say I largely agree - this is a wonderful, imaginative and fresh take on some very old tropes. The performances were excellent. I don't think there was a weak one among them. The first half and the last 20 minutes are terrific.
Where it fell down for me, though, was in the second half of the second act. While it did not exactly go off the rails, it did become repetative. Nothing new was added to the story; it was just plot mechanics and a couple of juicy set-pieces. That whole section of the film could have been excised and it would literally have made no difference to the overall experience. I sympathize; second acts are notoriously hard to nail. Many a writer has stumbled crossing that Great Gulf. That section of the film also grew strangely timid - why didn't that one character die? Was there any reason to wimp out on a perfectly good bit of grisly business? Why didn't that quasi-sex scene, while agreeably twisted, actually pay off in some way? It not only didn't deepen the conflict between the characters, it was sort of forgotten by them after a bit of discussion that went nowhere.
But these are nitpicks. The film nicely recovers and comes to a conlusion that is immensely satisfying and appropriate. There is far more right than wrong with it. Highly recommended.
I can't remember the second half of the second act as a whole particularly to be able to comment on it (I might agree with you mostly), but as for the quasi-sex scene deepening the conflict..I think it did serve that purpose. It was just one more strike against Mia to make her being mistrusted and abandoned in the end that much more understandable. In real life friendships, it's not uncommon for people to give each other the benefit of the doubt regarding mistakes and friend sins - holding out hope that they're still the great person you've always known - only to finally have the one action come along that reveals their true colors after all and makes the decision to break things off for good that much easier.
love how agressive all characters were lmao: They almost broke the sisters head with them pillows
Excellent, just excellent!
HYPED!
Damn, this is the first time I actually heeded a spoiler warning 😂 I'll be back!
As much as luv this woman’s insight and movie review intellect and breakdown 100 like none other, I can’t help but wonder if she wore a sweater or nerd long sleeve Steve Jobs turtleneck ha (+ mascara, hair brushback’s) what the Followers and per vid viewership percentage would drop by ha
But all ❤🎥👏🏻💯
The part where I said oh "shit that crazy" was when the little girl said " I let you in"
Best horror movie of the year, so far. I gave it 5 skulls out of 5.
What I enjoyed most about this film is its lack of adherence to modern stereotypes and tropes. The characters have dimensions and resolutions that exist beyond the expectations of the genre.
I just remembered what movie this is and that I really want to watch it. I'll have to catch your review another time
ok, i'll see this one then your review 'cause am certain will enjoy (as much as i did..."barbie"🤪).
Now I have to see this movie 🍿🎥
Yes you do and let us know what you think when you’ve watched 🙂
Maggie, you MUST, must review Michael Mann’s Collateral! Easily Tom Cruise’s best movie and his best role!
I just got back from the theater. It's very good!
Trailer is interesting 👍🏻
I love this movie, I love this review!
Did anyone remember the moment of bad acting from Riley's mother when she saw him missing from he hospital room? Kevin McCallister's mom had a better reaction to her son missing than that haha
I'm surprised reading/watching reviews, and reading their comments that the consensus on this movie is as strong as I've seen. I thought this was a movie full of missed opportunities, half-baked ideas, and a lackluster ending. A few very chilling sequences/images (particularly with Riley), but surrounded by scenes that don't interconnect at all.
Story beats skipped over like the police investigation, introduction of characters that do absolutely nothing later in the plot, and act 1 comedy bits that feels completely out of place due to the lack of humor later on, made this a very muddled watch. I think the production of the movie is extremely well done, but it felt like a second draft that needed more rewrites and a set of fresh eyes to oversee what was worthy of development during the scripting process.
Man this hot chick always speaks her mind, never plays the safe game like critics.
Can you do a Review for Broker please?
Koreeda’s movie? Broker was decent but this year’s Monster was a far better film.
@@ssssssstssssssss One of the saddest films i have ever seen
Love this Film so much
Movie is an allegory for how me and my friends use to take turns inhaling compressing air
Time for Star Wars: Rogue One?
I have not seen the film yet, but I do know for sure that they would not want me in the marketing department on this one. I would have insisted on calling it "Talk to the Hand"
I thought it was almost insultingly overrated. Thought it had great parts and idea but actually felt aimless towards the middle and end. Or just that the idea/the way they were writing/executing it wasn’t enough to carry the whole movie? Donno what it was and or if I need to watch it again. But I honestly did not feel much of anything from it. Again besides some really cool highlights in an array of categories
In addition to the reviews, these are all great as a look into a woman's closet.
One of my favorite horror movies in recent years
Yeah barbarian was good.... But this talk to me is on another level....
I want to see it but was hoping for just weird/spooky and not gore.
🙏🙏🙏
This girl is like if Grace Randolph was smart. 😂
Why don’t you do shots in videos more often?
I’m glad we have a movie that embraces sucking feet.
Best...F*ck around & find out...horror i've seen in awhile...those practical effects thoe...😬
❤
Uh, can someone explain to me why does the main character keeps seeing ghosts while the other kids don’t?
she was holding the hand for longer than the 90 second time limit, and so the spirit began to haunt her
@@esock2001 she’s only a few seconds too long. I don’t think the spirits are that strict. The kids are also not very strict on the 90 seconds rule.
Sophie Wilde is incredible
Please review JOJO RABBIT
I wish you talk to me 😂😅
I just watched the trailer czcams.com/video/aLAKJu9aJys/video.html is the sound anything like that in the film? I thought you would have mentioned it if it was.
“If you have not seen this movie, please, stop watching this right now! Go see the movie, then come back and………..talk to me.”
Maggie, you missed out on a golden opportunity! 😂😂😂🤷♂️😊😊
Just seen it and my mind still thinks the movie might have been real or could happen lol best horror of at least the decade maybe all time idk
@@Inseptembertowers “too bad” that I really don’t give a shit if you’ve seen it or not lol 👍🏻
Record eachothers dmt trips in college? 😭 what do you mean, what was that like
Not a hooror fan so I'll skip this one but a great review nonetheless.
Still think Barbarian was alot better. The hype for this didnt pay off for me. Glad other liked it so much
Hi.
Its strange its getting good reviews as they are from my town and absolute jackasses.
Lmao everyone in the comments must not watch alot of horror ....also the ppl makin this movie has hit up NUMEROUS midlvl youtubers paying them for reviews....this is probably one as well lmao its definitely not scary at all super predictable and derivative
Now it follows is actually dang good
@@printisdead1983 It Follows was just as bad better but than this crap.
Not sure what movie she saw, the movie is 30 minutes too long, its writing is disjointed. Its confusion horror. The movie falls apart the longer it goes on, and the ending is dumb even for my beloved horror genre.
Lol okay bud
@@austincarlson9270 I may not agree with you, yet I would never laugh at you.
I enjoyed your review as I always do. However, I did not like this film at all. I find the narrative is very poor. I find the story centered around Mia's mom not handled well. There are other setups that don't have good payoffs. Rules for this supernatural world are almost non-existent. Yes, I truly understand that this film is a metaphor for addiction. However, the narrative structure just doesn't work for me. Plus, I didn't find the film scary at all.
A lot of movies are better than Barbarian. I never understood the hype on that film. Seemed pretty average to me.
modern horror film seem to just rely on family trauma and head smashing
In my opinion, best horror movie of the year is evil dead rise. This one was not that great for me. The one I’m really looking forward to is Saw10
Right…. Straight away this film irritated me. Why, why, why can’t modern films hold back? Why are they not prepared to wait, giving a little away at a time to build a slow burn. That scene at the beginning basically removes any tension of what’s to come. You know what this does to the characters and it’s effects. YOU DON’T NEED TO DO IT!!!!! Trust that your audience has an attention span of more than 2 minutes. Films work much better when tension is built, not when you show your hand straight away.
The first 40 minutes was the most boring “horror” film I’ve ever seen. Absolutely zero suspense or tension. And the last half is just a series of loud sounds, with a cliche plot about trauma, in my opinion. But I did love the acting and cinematography
Disappointed. Another "grief" themed Babadook clone. You're either Blumhouse or you're "deep" these days. The current template for what constitutes good horror seems to favor King's Shining over Kubrick's. Kubrick removed what wasn't horror and told the better story.
In this, her grief was a good motivation, but the hand should have remained the one and only villain, not her issues.
The fact that Maggie think this movie is deeper than what it is is hilarious!
I Haven't seen it, and Im not falling for hype,I already know it's trash 🗑️
If you’ve seen Barbarian, Smile, and Hereditary, then you’ve basically seen this movie lol
@@123rockfan I haven't seen any of those movies either, are the WOKE trash?
