    Its disturbingly realistic, people are more likely to mock people going through hard times than try to empathise, the opening scene where everyone had their cameras out instead of helping of giving privacy was scary and real, and people just need to be better as a whole

    I honestly didn't feel like anything was left unanswered except the origin of the hand, which, for me, was fine. I appreciate that element of vague horror. How did the hand come to be and how did it get out of Australia? Who knows, and thats horrifying.

      I just watched it and I agree, the movie wrapped everything up pretty neatly. I actually felt like the movie began to lose a little steam by the end because it was no longer interested in opening up any questions and characters frequently just stop to outright explain the mechanics. Virtually everything was answered by the mid point which left a relatively long road to the resolution.

  • @clairsaint-camille5595
    @clairsaint-camille5595 Před 10 měsíci +113

    I was lukewarm on the movie, but I actually did find the teens' lack of gravity about the hand to be realistic when I think of the hand only as a metaphor for drug use. Even though some drugs are literally staring into the face of death and life-ruining, a certain type of teenager will hear the safety warnings all day but still do a reckless amount of drugs. Mia's description of how it felt to be inhabited was like describing a high. I also liked that this metaphor fits in with Mia's storyline neatly, as she's doing the drug because she feels so much grief, so it particularly fucks her up. She actually thinks it's helping her cope and come to terms with her trauma, but it's killing her.
    If I'm thinking of the hand as a literal supernatural artifact that's summoning ghosts, I also don't think I would have fucked around with it even as a teen who did drugs.

      @Graymage69420 Před 9 měsíci +14

      I like your point of view. I couldn't get into this film because I could not believe the premise that people would act that way. Do drugs? Drink? Smoke? Sure. But possessing demons for funsies? Once someone actually gets possessed and they know it's real, none of them freak out or turn to religion or try to use the hand to get famous in today's internet viral culture? I found that hard to believe. Plus it was just so slow and boring to me. I thought it was super goofy and not scary at all except for the opening scene and a few scenes at the end. Your interpretation makes it a little easier to believe, although I still can't suspend my disbelief. I agree with this channel that the group needed either a "doubter" character or else someone who tells them they should probably stop what they are doing.
      As a metaphor for drugs, it makes a lot more sense. I prefer that.

    • @moistwrmonastring1017
      @moistwrmonastring1017 Před 10 měsíci +16

      The story behind how they came up with the drug allegory is insane to me.
      The creators of this film saw a video online of someone convulsing on the ground after drug abuse, in pain, and the people recording were laughing and getting in the kid’s face.
      It hits me so hard because it’s real, this is how some people are around drugs, and that’s terrifying in itself- but adding grief and imagery of hell on top of that and I am SOLD!
      What an awesome idea for a film, I hope more teenagers end up seeing this film with their friends and wake up from what they’re doing. It’s especially bad here in Australia.

    I think the influence of social media also helped make sense of what the teens were doing. It looked like connecting to the hand was a viral trend on tiktok or something, and as screwed up as it was, I could see why the teens in the movie wanted to test it out. They were getting high off of it. I think they were more addicted to the high aspect rather than the consequences.

    I get what you mean about it not being realistic for the kids to keep doing it, but it really reminded me of (albeit a more extreme) version of those challenges people used to do when I was younger. Specifically the fainting game (where you cut off oxygen to your brain to faint). The challenge in the movie is definitely a lot more heavier of course but I felt like they were going for an amplified version of that. Definitely been to parties where I've seen people do the stupidest and potentially life threatening stuff before.
    Also there was a scene with some doubters! A couple other teens outside of the friend group said they think it's all some elaborate prank they're doing. But I agree, even that isn't strong enough of a reason and they definitely should have had more doubt from the people around them.

    I think there was some aspect of the characters questioning the reality of the hand and it’s abilities. Before they go to the “party” with the character that owns the hand, they see videos online about people using it and think it’s fake (which is why they ask to go experience it for themselves). Even when Mia is experiencing the ghost herself, her best friend questions is she’s faking it at first and is in disbelief and shock by her expression and lack of words compared to everyone else on the couch

    I saw this one early during a special screening and I went with high expectations but not because I had read good things about it, just based on the trailer and the fact it was A24 production and I absolutely LOVED it ! Supernatural horror is also my favorite and I think you can tell this was an independent movie with probably a low budget because they didn't count on big CGI and stuff (even though everything looked great in my opinion)- they created a great story, super interesting and it worked! Most horror movies lack of good original story so it felt so refreshing!
    About their reactions not being super realistic, I feel like it could be seen as a way to criticize how new generations are taking everything not seriously, especially with social media and the need to find a "shocking" content which could bring you followers and fame and money (and I think it is a way to critize it cause they post their stuff on social media in the movie?).

    I wish reviewers would stop comparing new movies to movies that have become classics within the horror community. Had I not seen people calling it the scariest movie of the decade so far and on-par with Hereditary, I probably would have enjoyed it more. Without the comparisons I think it could have been a 4 star view for me, but because of that I have it at three stars. The script was so safe and predictable and it does not take it to the edge at all. The real savior of this was the performances. I need Sophia Wilde on more screens IMMEDIATELY.

    While I agree that the hand wasn't very mysterious as to how it works, the thing that the creators have said many times is that this hand is supposed to be an allegory to drugs/drinking and other unhealthy habits teens develop to cope. They don't question it or see it for how grave it is, it's a scary yet entertaining escape that everyone feels pressured to partake in and can get carried away in. I think if they made the hand more mysterious or less effective for some people or something it would have taken away from that allegory and how it plays into such a realistic teen cast.

    Jade was the strong doubter archetype until it was presented in front of her! she constantly said it was all being faked for the videos and by hayley. she then feared it personally but didnt mind seeing other people enjoy it. She was never interested in trying it herself and aimed to protect her brother due to his age. I think the core allegory is possession as recreational drug abuse which teens are incredibly susceptible to be sucked into, even though to some it can seem dumb and has real dangers. I think Jade was that character for people who are more practical and disciplined and wouldn't be sucked in the same way to the craze.

    The actress is fantastic at portraying a protagonist that is thoroughly insufferable and a clear danger to everyone around, so glad movies aren’t afraid to show stupidity and selfish recklessness disguised as traumatic grief! It’s a fresh take to portray a character that is so flippant with the pain of the one other person who is experiencing precisely what she is experiencing, but has no trouble weaponizing that same pain to make others feel guilty and feel sorry for her to get what she wants, the father is desperately trying to connect with his daughter who ignores his attempts only to turn around and desperately try to connect with the other parent that knowingly abandoned her….so tragic…

    So my thoughts…I first would like to state I’m older & I grew up in late 80s and 90s. I grew up watching horror movies & movies in general; I’ve watched so many I lost count years ago. Movies to me, are an escape. They don’t have to mimic real life; in fact, I’d prefer that they don’t. I want to escape, if I want real I can watch the news or listen to podcasts. So that being said, I feel this movie was different in a good way, it held my attention. It wasn’t scary but the suspense was awesome & the lead actress did an AMAZING job. I thought it ended perfectly, I wasn’t confused or left wondering. I actually hope they do a part two of the movie. Best movie of the year….well some movies I’m anticipating including saw 10, but Evil Dead Rise is the top for me. I give this movie 8/10.

Jade wasn’t nearly upset enough in the times that she really should’ve been. Most of it was just really contrived and frustrating to sit through.
