As a 14 year recovered alcoholic, I can say I know plenty about addiction struggle and I hate that in movies they always want to simplify it in external factors: the boyfriend, the dad; the parties, etc. There’s always a group of elements that are far more deep than just pointing at one person. I also hate how Hollywood romanticizes addiction and suffering, yes there is a certain poetic aspect in all tragedies but Hollywood’s films make people’s lives very cartoony.

My theory is the script had too long a running time, so they cut scenes out (that would’ve tied loose ends) rather than cutting out segments of the story. Family, friendship, career, love life and personal life is a lot to fit in 2 hours.
Everything you say is so spot-on and I absolutely loved your analysis btw.
Something I definitely would love to say is that the music soundtracks in the movie was awesome. I loved the way they would play to relate to a part of the story. I imagine the non-Winehouse songs that played were ones she claimed as her favourites.
Back to Black is my favourite song by her so I love the movie title, aha.

I poured through her catalog and understand now why she was so well loved. She was a gifted talent and a genius songwriter. As for the movie, I enjoyed the performances of the actors. My bar was low going in and it surpassed my low expectations. I wasn’t looking for any revelations because it’s just a movie. I am going to watch the documentary and listen to her music more.

While realizing your question is directed to Maggie, Spike Lee's Malcolm X is a perfect example of the point in my earlier posting. While Denzel Washington did a magnificent performance emulating Malcolm, the film is infotainment since it is filled with historical distortions which can lead the viewer to misunderstandings.

The subject matter is an interesting choice for a biopic. Amy Winehouse was not noteworthy or original from a contemporary music perspective. Even her minor break from Jazz into Top 40/sample-pop with the film’s namesake album was a flash in the pan. Why does this movie exist?

  • @cobracommander9138

The movie didn't explain or even hint at where all of her pain was coming from. She was self harming with alcohol and sex way before she ever met Blake. The movie didn't explain or even hint at where Amy's daddy issues where coming from. Why is she attracted to an alcoholic loser.

I heard they were making this and was completely turned off by the idea of a Hollywood Amy Winehouse biopic. As you stated, people really should just watch the Amy documentary or listen to her music. She is (in my opinion) one of the most interesting people to ever make music, and to simplify her is an insult. I’d rather see a film where they depict an excellent day she had, or something where she is having sessions making her music.

They almost seem like satire of their own genre by this point, the way WALK HARD was.

Maggie, biopics can be great, like any other genre. You just have to find the right movie. Raging Bull is a biopic and it's a masterpiece. So is Goodfellas. Amadeus. Ed Wood. The Elephant Man. Walk the Line. La Bamba. The Buddy Holly Story. Serpico. Lawrence of Arabia. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Etc. Don't fault the genre, fault the filmmaker.

Nowhere Boy was quietly excellent, but the films helmed by the director since haven’t fared well critically; this seems no exception.
I am totally unfamiliar w/ Winehouse’s music (all I ever heard was the trouble she put herself in) and biopics like this seldom if ever make me interested in learning about an unfamiliar artist.
A well-researched documentary would be far more entertaining, enlightening; I might be tempted to watch that, but quite frankly I got so tired of hearing about Winehouse’s foibles w/o ONCE hearing any of her songs, nah still not interested.

You mention that you are not a huge fan of the bio-pic, and neither am I. You also mentioned that the film doesn't try to understand Winehouse with any depth. And that hits on the reason that I don't care for most bio-pics. It's because a lot of the people are not worth of a bio-pic. They don't HAVE any depth. These are essentially uninteresting people. Winehouse was a musician who flourished for a short while before dying of alcohol poisoning I believe. I did not care for her music, and just because she made music does not make her interesting to me. They have made bio-pics out of all the truly interesting people, so we are down to the dregs at this point. A substance abusing musician does not deserve a movie, IMO.
