    I'm pissed off with how Netflix releases movies on their service with little attention given to theaters, because a new David Fincher movie should've been a huge talking point but it came and went with how quickly everyone saw the movie. There wasn't any longevity or anticipation to aid discussion.

    Kind of unrelated to this movie but not to the "literally me" meme. You should look at the case of Ethan Windom, a 16 year old who dressed in suits, carried a briefcase and imitated the exact same skincare routine as Bateman. Kept a day planner where he would write about killing the people he meet that day. Anyway he ended up brutally murdering his mother and in the subsequent police interrogation he ends up saying he will give a confession if he gets the same french cologne as Bateman. Really crazy stuff. And keep in mind all this happened in 2007. So way before all the memes and such. The whole interrogation video can be found on youtube. The whole thing is just so bizarre.

    I think he spared the Client because
    1) As you said, the blowback from killing such a high-profile person would put himself and his girlfriend in jeopardy. He did go there without any ammo after all, so he must’ve anticipated that he wasn’t going to end up killing him.
    2) Upon finally coming face to face with the Client, truly one of the few who take advantage of the many, he realises that he’s even more of a clueless loser than himself. This is why the Killer accepts being one of the many, because if the alternative is being like the Client, then he’d rather be a sheep.

    He left Clayborne alive so that he can continue working for him, or at least using him a resource. When the Killer's eye twitches at the end of the move it's a tell that he's not done.

    • @KenTWOu
      @KenTWOu Před 5 měsíci +8

      The killer's eye twitches in the middle of the movie during the Lawyer chapter, the moment it twitches contradicts your interpretation, the point is he doesn't like where he ended up.

    • @garyking1986
      @garyking1986 Před 4 měsíci +3

      I think his eye twitches when he’s being mentally affected by his actions.
      He likes to think he can switch off his empathy and return from his job to a peaceful life with his partner, but when Deloris begs that eye twitch shows that deep down he feels some empathy.
      This is why he agrees to killing her in the way that he died; it’s his version of kindness.
      Therefore, I think the twitch at the end is just meant to show that he is more traumatised by what he’s done that he’d like to think, but he still shuts his eyes right after, showing that he’ll still make an effort to leave the life of crime behind.
      Fassbender rarely blinks in the film, so him shutting his eyes is a big moment for him as he’s finally accepting that he’s not cut out for the life.
      (It is crazy how so many people have completely opposite interpretations of the film, but that’s kind of why I love it.)

    Fun historical fact about bushido code, it was inspired by European concept of chivalry. But due to orientalism, it’s became so mystified and treated as this exotic and unique idea from Japan when in fact it’s a result of westernization of Japan during the Meiji era. lol

    This is me. Literally me. No other character can come close to relating to me like this. There is no way you can convince me this is not me. This character could not possibly be anymore me. It's me, and nobody can convince me otherwise. If anyone approached me on the topic of this not possibly being me, then I immediately shut them down with overwhelming evidence that this character is me. This character is me, it is indisputable. Why anyone would try to argue that this character is not me is beyond me. If you held two pictures of me and this character side by side, you'd see no difference. I can safely look at this character every day and say "Yup, that's me". I can practically see this character every time I look at myself in the mirror. I go outside and people stop me to comment how similar I look and act to this character. I chuckle softly as I'm assured everyday this character is me in every way. I can smile each time I get out of bed every morning knowing that I've found my identity with this character and I know my place in this world. It's really quite funny how similar this character is to me, it's almost like we're identical twins. When I first saw this character, I had an existential crisis. What if this character was the real me and I was the fictional being. What if this character actual became aware of my existence? Did this character have the ability to become self aware itself?

    You'd sooner lash out on the contractors for your mistake, take your anger out on a stranger, but to the higher ups you are nothing and your unemployment will only affect your family ;)
    For me Smiths work as the perfect ironic commentary on the main character's pose. Just like him: they seemingly say one thing, people take it seriously, but there's also something completely different behind it (in classic Morrissey fashion: weep boy but making fun of himself which ppl don't want to see). I mean the subversion of Fincher own style can be apparent. I mean, for me the first 15 minutes are straight from comedy! The guy tells you how awesome he is and at the end he fucks up his SHOT anyway.
    How many such corporate assholes I personally know from my work: people with a perfect philosophy of individualism, underpinned by quotes (they can't remember from whom) and names that are completely miscast. In fact the guy has one manual/instruction for his duties, and when it starts to fail he's like a child in a fog, like a lot self proclaimed specialists from finance I know ;) The ladder of who gets his ass kicked is what I've already written at start. In front of the client, he goes on trying to pretend to be strong and secure, but in these conditions he knows it's a pose and that's really the only person who can harm him in a long run. A man who has no idea who the protagonist is and doesn't care. Lots of comedy: the most sus names as aliases, unobtrusiveness as a philosophy, and snacking on a mcmuffin without a bun etc.
    He's just another insignificant cog in a system that he doesn't understand and has no access to. He thinks he's making an amazing retribution act but to the people at the top his 'sacking' was another day in the office for them and they don't even know who the hell he is or what he's about. All those boring mechanical actions with each kill, throwing away the gun instead of the 'pile of papers' after your assingment. It also seems to me as a meta commentary on how fight club characters have been idealised. Or even literally me characters in general: another fulfilling male virtue guy - coolness, lack of emotion, a certain life philosophy (all of which he breaks on screen), family. But in reality? Incompetence, saving himself with slogans and the disappointment he caused to his family as his burden (which he deflect by blaming others).
    Anyway, cool video! I have to watch your twin peaks series.

    • @mdd4296
      @mdd4296 Před 5 měsíci +2

      Yes, it's very much a dark comedy about being one among the masses. Complete with a glut of product placement. Other literally me movie often ended in a cathartic way: protagonist completes his total destruction or redemption. But the Killer™changes nothing. In that sense, The Killer. Is. Truly. Literally. Me.

      Isn’t our best course of action being self aware of our situation but also willing to create a system of values that allows us to feel important? Without contradiction we would have nothing. We all know we’re just drops of water in the ocean but to be aware of this constantly would be cruel.
      Also he had to act against his system because he screwed up, I think this was a representation of how uncontrollable life is. Chaos is unavoidable, whatever philosophy you subscribe to is not above the law. He fails and desperately scrambles to get out from under the mess he made. This isn’t humiliating and it doesn’t make him a fool, it just makes him human

    If you notice everytime he breaks his code like giving the redhead a death with insurance money to her child and just goes to the Tilda Swinton at the bar without hesitation even tho it for sure isn't ideal. Everything goes smooth and he get's what he wants. Everytime he goes by the code there is something that makes everything go messed up, like with the Florida guy. The whole thing is from the get go from empathy, revenge, feelings towards the woman, he just cannot leave it even at the end and lives in misery after all said and done. It's almost like the whole mission was giving him hints of letting go from the mindstate.
    Still yes obviously the code works since he have never before botched a gig. Nonethless there clearly is some idea to why everything goes ok when he is at the last mission, almost like a divine intervention hinting to him to let the mindframe go. Even the paraller Swinton gives goes to this, like just let it go (even tho the character doesn't mean it that way, but it's kinda doubletalk for viewers too).
    I think he doesn't kill the last guy out of pure of not caring after seeing him. It's not so personal afterall with him and the killer look down on the guy. Still at the beach he is still not content, he says he doesn't care but haven't strayed from the mindframe and looks like he is haunted by all of the killing.

    I think what’s interesting about this character, he’s not a real person. He has no personal traits. He has no real identity. What Patrick Bateman thinks of himself to be is who the killer actually actually is. Patrick says he has no clear identity but he plays the role of the businessman as his personality Claims he has no feelings only greed and disgust. but though out the entire Flim he’s an emotional wreck. He’s happy,Sad angry, jealous, vain, narcissistic. A psychopath pretending he’s not human when in fact he’s a human who’s a psychopath.But the killer can be literally anyone who abandons everything. He has morals he has a conscious but He completely let go of both, and only dose what is necessary to succeed. He has to remind himself at every corner not to be human because he is. People are saying it’s dumb. He’s an hypocrite but despite his contradictions he is human and has to work incredibly hard to suppress his humanity. He doesn’t have a name he doesn’t have a personality everything he is designed to be effective. Not everyone can be a psychopath but people can turn off their humanity. They just can’t keep it off. Anyone could become this, and that’s the scariest part. He was created by his work ethic and job and because of this he let go of everything personal and human, or so he tried. His human nature for revenge, Love and growth are all present. After the intro I was extremely shocked to find out he was married. You can see who he really is. Right there you can see he’s grey but thinks in black and white. Anyone was could become this with enough discipline, time and concentration they can become… the killer. He believes what he says the entire movie but can’t always act on it because he’s human just not at the personal level because off what he was trying to do he couldn’t allow himself to be emotional or take thing’s personally. However he dose. He kills out for revenge, he longs to be with his wife and doesn’t get paid for anyone he kills. Breaks all of his rules and knows this doubting himself mocking himself and even saying Fuck it and Ignoring everything he trained himself to be. In the end he becomes one of the many

    I enjoyed it for what it was, but felt very 'so what' through most of it. He botched an assassination, then his girlfriend gets beat up? Ok. If she was killed i could understand his reaction, but I never felt any stakes. The girl is ok, and he is good at his job. I thought it was a thriller without tension, with some quirkyness thrown in for some reason. It wants to be cool and i felt it.

    Hey Kino, wouldn’t you know a film Where a child Lives in the middle of nowhere, his mom abuses physically of him, his dad commits suicide, his friends are killed one by one by a gang of young evil teens in a car, a white fetus in a barn and a cop with a patch?, i know that movie does not sound like something that would be real, but it is, i have seen it, i just dont know the name.

    Idk how michael fassbender was able to accumulate that massive stockpile of weapons in different locations, mansion, and money for being so incompetent and sloppy the entire movie lol. Wish the movie showed him in his prime, nearly undetectable.
