Worst Levels Ever # 10

  • Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones. This time, we look at a very boring and dull early level from an SRPG.
I will more likely pick bad levels from games that I otherwise enjoy. These are the ones that stick out the most and can bring good games down.

As far I know, one of the lead developers of Shining Force mentioned that Fire Emblem has horrible pacing. Well, he's right, but most fire emblem games don't have THIS level of slow terrain. I mean Jesus Christ, trekking through mountains surrounded by forests! FE games have slow chapters too, but it's usually 2-3 chapters per game at most, and even then it's not this bad.

I like Shining Force over Fire Emblem for one simple reason: it makes deaths non-permanent and compensates by making the enemies themselves much stronger than your units. Most players will try to keep their entire army intact throughout the duration of the game, but in Fire Emblem, one bad roll of the RNG will force you to rage-quit and start a chapter over. In Shining Force, I know that I will be losing characters in a battle more often than not, but with enemies that are stronger, the challenge is allocating characters as a resource.

Those first Shining Force battles are rough. If you think about it, this was a way for them to introduce things like Boss units (Rune Knight), Land Effect and unit types' movement preferences (Horses can't move through mountains easily). It's painful but it implicitly teaches you all this. Your comments even show how you're aiming to have enemies on grass and not mountain so the lessons taught there are working... it's just rough. I hate that second battle so much.

When I saw Shining Force I thought it was going to be the BS Circus Tent fight that happens pretty early in the game and is really damn brutal, but I agree that the first game had way too many levels where the terrain grinds the pace to a screeching halt... and this is a turn based strategy game! These games are not known for their blindingly fast gameplay!

  • @maesejesus

As much as I like the classic Shining Force 1, it's true that some stages are not as fun as others, mostly because it takes a while to reach the enemies, and as you point out, with all those terrains it takes even more.
Although that's not a problem of this game only, saddly no S-RPG is safe from that flaw in some way or another.
Another thing I didn't like as much is the stat growth system, just like FE, you can have very bad luck; unfortunatelly that's one of the most usual things in this genre, even when it only serves to make a good chunk of the characters on this games not very useful/ just a fucking joke. At least in my eyes, of course.
In Shining Force 1 is more about the level up system being a dick with the player and not that much about each character, but in case of FE it's more about the developers making the characters bad at their own will.
Why the developers create so many characters just to fuck them in the stat/gameplay department? I always thought it was a total waste of time for both, the developers and the players.
If you're going to make characters, don't waste your time doing them bad and don't add them to the game just to fill spaces.
Wouldn't it be great if you had a lot of good choices to create your own team instead of choosing "the ones that doesn't suck"?
Anyway... I find Shining Force 2 being much better and enjoyable in general (Stat Growth fixed for the most part too), although I still love the cast of characters from the first one, it is quite varied and bizarre, with things like a Squid Wizard, a flying Don Quijote, that Knight-Tank Armadillo guy, Jay Leno as a centaur,... And the best thing in the universe, JOGURT! i'm sure you'll agree!
While far from perfect I still like the game, and I even would choose SF1 over some of the Fire Emblem titles.
And sorry for the rant, lol.

D MAS Probably not. Speed is a determining factor in turn order, and that would mean there may be a time when you have to wait several turns before you get a turn. I think that would bore you.

Kibchi Redanlae Yeah I already posted a comment after this that said I probably wouldn't get into this, sadly... Though I do like Speed being a determining factor, there's no real way see who will go next, like Final Fantasy Tactics (Which I have not played...)

Speaking of first impressions, I keep hearing about people who quit Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne because of Matador, Though I haven't seen any person complaining about him myself but I can see why.
    Early game boss(Like the 3rd or 4th)
You don't get Dekunda(The skill the removes buffs from the enemy) yet
Matador uses Red Capote(Maximum Hit/Evasion, Equal to using the Hit/Evasion buff 4 times) as an opener
Even if you decrease his Hit/Evasion by the debuff, You need to do it 4 Times to neutralize it
The battle system punishes you for missing, If you attack and miss, You lose 2 Mini-turns(Each turn you get mini-turns equal to the party members number) without doing damage
He can use Red Capote anytime he wants in the battle even if you make his Hit/Evasion normal

Oh, and as a person who played that remake!
The long and boring battle is not an oversight, mistake, or mess-up.
It's even in the remake, and it's just as boring as ever.

I'll never have problems with SF series, even in that second battle or on the other giant maps. But i agree, they are SO GIANT!
To avoid that two final enemies, put two characters that attack from distance behind the river (like Hans and Tao) and attack from there.

I admit it, when I first played Shining Force on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, either the game was hard for me, or I didn't know where to go, or the very first battle was a bit of a bore. I NEED to get back to this game. Maybe, though.

Those levels just look like hell to have to sit through with all those terrain cutting fields. This is one of the reasons why I'm reluctant to get into SRPGs, because the fun depends heavily on good game (and level) design. Missions shouldn't feel like a sluggish grind fest or a chore to play through like you want to get it over with as soon as possible. What I've seen in this video looks like a terrible mix of both.
Also "I'm sorry, fuck it" -- best line ever. Would have been my reaction to this game if I were playing that awful looking second level.

    • @hiroyuki648
      @hiroyuki648 Před 8 lety

Not all SRPGs are that slow, though. It's just that Shining Force put something you should be seeing mid/late-game during early-game.
Most Fire Emblem games might have a slow start, but some chapters later you will already notice a speed up on the pace. Except for FE7 (or just Fire Emblem in the west) and Lyn's Tale, as Lyn herself said, "Fuck it". Fuck that overly long tutorial. I was glad when I actually started the game on Eliwood's Tale. It's so much more fun.

I'm at Chapter 5 and I've just about figured out how to determine what a stage will be like based on the music:
Map 1 (example: the battle featured in this video): Relentlessly boring
Battle 1: Always a castle level, cool layout
Battle 2: Standard battle, usually forgettable (except the Laser Eye battle)
Battle 3 (example: Marionette battle): Either hilariously easy or hair-pullingly frustrating, there is no in-between

One of the worst levels that happens early was in Enter the matrix, after the epic fighting and snipping if the airport you need to chase Axel who is in a plan "oh this sounds fun, I'm gonna be epic and do stunts in the car and it's gonna be fun!", Oh how wrong was I, here you can go to slow as your chasing it but you can't be fast as there's bumps and sharp turns and then you had to avoid anything in your way, including pillars and metal boxes, finally if the torment couldn't get worse you get hunted down by the police theeeen you chase a agent! This happens on a early part and to top it off it's with a character that should not be able the mission is called aqueduct and the game is for Ps2 but after that horrible part it gets alot better.
Fun fact the game is made made completely out of motion control for the movements of the characters!
