  • WARNING: This video may cause seizures.
    Many times, I hear people say that graphics don't matter and that only gameplay counts towards making a game great. I disagree with this.
    There are some games out there with such graphical problems, it can seriously spoil the experience. Today, I'm taking a look at the games that will test the faith of even the most devout "gameplay whores". Wow, never thought I'd say that. Except for the other seven previous times, of course.
    Learn why being poisoned is even worse for you than you thought, why Saturn can't be trusted, why JPEG images suck, and... Top Banana finally loses its crown?!

      I feel like that's something hard to convey in a video. With seizure inducing graphics like in this video it's easy to see, and with horrible music it's easy to hear, but a game with bad controls can only really be felt through a video if you've played the game yourself and can relate to it. Otherwise it's hard to determine whether the controls are awful, or the person playing is.

    The Final Boss had such terrible graphics it literally lowered the video quality to 144p.
    Most powerful video game graphic of all time?

    • @DJANDREAJP
      @DJANDREAJP Před měsícem +4

      If you mean the 144p final boss in Pulseman, then I think there's a good reason (Sorry if it's about a different final boss):
      According to the instruction manual in Pulseman, the manual mentions about a device that's a "2d to 3d device" called "Eureka".
      I think Pulseman's nemesis aka Doc Waruyama decided to use the Eureka device to become into a 3D version of Doc Waruyama to become as the final boss, and it looks like a "3D polygon-ish but it's actually 2D dot graphicified" Doc Waruyama.
      I do agree about this part, but if that final boss was made out of actual polygon, then the game would lag and ruin Pulseman's shiny appeal on how capable this game can do on the Sega Genesis.
      Sorry for this long explanation, but here's my comment about this 144p final boss.

  • @princessrescuermk3
    @princessrescuermk3 Před měsícem +32

    I have a new suggestion for a new series: Leave My Hands Alone. It's a series where you can go over bad/annoying controls that hurt your hands. Not just button mashing and messing with muscle memory, but also controls that have buttons you don't want put in places where you can easily press them.
    An example I would come up with is a recent one: the Atari 50 collection's 7800 games, which have an L button that can't be relocated or changed (within the game that is) and will immediately reset your game and make you lose all of your progress if you press it. On PS4 and PS5, the best way to do this is to go into Settings and re-locate the L button with Triangle. I imagine it's the same to do the equivalent for the Xbox consoles. On Switch, however, you can change buttons to remove the L entirely (as well as that screenshot button while you're at it), but only on the Joy-Cons, which are poorly made and known to "drift" if you use them too often. Use one of the Switch's alternate controllers to avoid this problem, such as an SNES controller, whose shoulder buttons hang out like an exposed posterior, meaning you easily run the risk of taking a big, fat L by pressing the button by accident. Your best option is the NES controller, which still has the L button, which is at least small and easy to avoid pressing. It lacks an X button however (required to press before you press A to start a game) so you still have to have a different one on hand to press X to initiate the game in question, be it a Joy-Con or otherwise.

      Can lousy ports of otherwise good games count for this?
      Because the PC port of the original Dead Space from 2008 would fit easily. For reasons I can't fathom, they apply analog stick deadzones to mouse movement which makes mouse aiming feel incredibly stiff and unresponsive.

    • @princessrescuermk3
      @princessrescuermk3 Před měsícem +1

      @@qu1253 Without a doubt! There seems to be quite a few downgraded remakes lately where almost everyone prefers the original. I think it's due to a problem inherent to gaming, especially console gaming, where people are happy because the game is coming to (a) new console(s).
      Audiences of other media dread remakes because they know there's a big potential to miss the point of a known classic. I guess we just don't have the same standards because having standards for full-priced games just isn't as fun.

      oh, that reminds me:
      in an old SNES game, "Tiny Toons adventures, Buster busts loose", there's a segment at the end of level 2, where your character is supposed to automatically sprint-jump onto the train engine.

    I'm not the biggest fan of the faux-3D during the SNES era.
    The one example that sticks out to me is Secret of Mana. Whenever you want to take off, you're greeted by an extreme close-up of Flammie's sprite that looks less like it's flying towards you and more like it's becoming a pixelated mess. But this pales in comparison to the world map, where technical limitations really make it hard to look at, let alone navigate. Oh, and the lightning strikes in endgame aren't helping

    The Magenta and SUPER Bright Greens that are used in Spyro give me splitting migraines if I play more than 30 minutes at a time. I hate even nominating it, but the reason why I love the Reignited Trilogy so much is they got rid of those super bright colors that featured so commonly on 3d models in the Play Station 1 era. It causes me severe physical pain. My eyes start hurting, my head hurts, and the migraine can last for more than a day. A very good (if slightly hard to swallow) video.
    Anyway, all points are subjective and personal, if understandable, but I had to note some moments:
    -I'm pretty sure, DQ4 stuttering effect is caused by NES being unable to render at fast speed. It's also probably not very noticable at monitors it supposed to run on. On ladders it's actually intentional as someone's bright idea to simulate stepping. Indeed, on modern monitors it annoys much more than it's supposed to deliver.
    -As far as I'm aware, you're supposed to pronounce it "is no good". Also I think, it's two different laugh tracks, but I can't get them to be side by side, so I'm not sure.
    -On the same matter, background remind me of Zelda CDI games, where, if I remember correctly, they were hand-drawn, not prerendered (as in 3d prerendered). Not a good sign either way.
    -Pumpkins kinda do sound like they saying "LubLub" more than "Nyam-Nyam", as other people claim. I think it is close to the track you used for your elephant LubLub back then, except in lower pitch (rather your one is in much higher pitch). Maybe it's the same one?

    I'll say this: Saturn's flashiness is WAY less of a factor on the original Game Boy, because the screen size was small enough that it didn't really hit that hard. When you blow it up to a bigger screen, it has a lot more impact. So that can at least be excused as an accident of modernity.
    I think I picked up on what you were talking about with DQ4 when you went up and down the stairs, there definitely was visible jittering there.
    "You press Square to jump, hold X to run and press Circle to attack." ...Right, someone get the fucking Hague on the line, I'm pretty sure that's a Geneva Convention violation.
    I wasn't too bothered by the JJ Squawkers one...until the last phase. That one was brutal.
    My eyes are unfortunately used to pain. Clearly official games are far from immune to visual atrocity, but the untamed world of ROM hacks has no quality check entry barrier. And I've suffered quite a bit of visual atrocity from them...some of them are just ugly, but when they start getting flashy it starts getting painful.

    While it's relatively minor, the Shadowfell in Baldur's Gate 3 has this annoying lensing effect that makes everything look blurry. Not that bad if you're playing the game on a computer monitor or a TV, but a handheld PC like the Steam Deck? The image becomes so muddy because of the lower resolution that it feels like I'm playing the game without glasses on.
    Luckily it's a short section, even shorter if you're smart and kill Balthazar before entering the Shadowfell (which you should, because fighting him in the Gauntlet of Shar is way easier).
