Thank you! Clicking on the spreadsheet inside PPT and having it open it's own Excel sheet worked for me - was able to change the values in Excel and it showed live in the PPT presentation.

unfortunate that the "paste link" functionality from Windows has not made its way into the Mac powerpoint software.
