MH1 was my first game I played in the franchise, way back in 2005. Now that I'm a lot older and better at MH, I've decided to document my experience playing it in 2022. I'm genuinely shocked about how much I remember.

Same dude....same. I remember...May 27th 2005 (I think) a journey began and Kut-Ku kicked my ass. I enjoyed the "hunting simulation" aspect. I still do it's just that's been lost especially with Rise. I also miss hit lag since...well Rise just doesn't feel the same. Side note but I consider MHFU to all of third gen to be the peak of the franchise so far with most of 4U as well.

@@ShinyUmbreon765 I disagree that it's a good change. It's more oversimplification mascarading as quality of life. These things are being changed willy-nilly without any regard for consequence on the overall design. Some shmuck thought it was a very good quality of life change to make whetstones infinite. Then someone added the dog. Then someone said you should be able to sharpen on the dog. Then someone said you could do that *while moving*. Well why the fuck even have sharpening or durability anymore at that point? It requires no commitment, thought or strategy to sharpening anymore so it just becomes a speedbump. And now they'll have to find a way to fix that too on the next game. They're just creating more issues for the sake of fixing things that never needed fixing in the first place. : P
Having gearsets that enhance your performance on the type of weapon you play is a much better choice than everyone wearing the same thing and there being an extremely rigid meta that applies to everybody, which in turn makes balancing weapon damage effectively impossible and so every weapon has to have roughly comparable damage outputs, further ruining the balance imposed by their movesets -- thus all the wirebug shit that was shoehorned in to ensure every weapon had generally the same options. And so, why even have different weapons? See? xD

I saw this game sit on the shelf month after month year after year. I thought it looked okay but never payed it much attention but the price- never went down it stayed at its maximum listing and being a penny pincher youngin I was focused on other titles until .. one day I saw it and I don't exactly know why.. I finally picked it up and looked at it, I bought. To this day I tell everyone how great this game was. In the last few months that the game was up was when I had connected my playstation 2 backplate network adapter. I was finally able to play online. Alone in my room in the dark I played this game all day single player, it was so hard so frustrating. This game was literally an adventure unlike anything else I played before. The action combat, the way your weapon dulled and bounced off hard plate, it didnt punish you it simply changed the game. Everything had function and utility. The environments were peaceful I could literally sit and camp in them, the tall grass plains above the swamplands, or the roaring bubbling beneath the looming mountain. The sound of nature as light rays shown from the mysterious canopy of the lower ring of the forest hearing the ominous music. This game was so much darker and more mature than any of the other games. It was filled with a dark realism- A real roguelike with consequences. From the Egg quest avoiding the raptors chasing you figuring out how to do everything without a guide or any help from any community, to printing out the latest info from game helpers that were playing about armor sets and printing out concept art with Hunitar gear that was comparable to FF. I played this game in the final months of online. Nothing since captured that nostalgic anime-like mmo feel that anime itself portrays than monster hunter did. or has since then. You can feast drink eat and emote at the tavern and drink get drunk. stumble around and get into trouble. Nothing was known too much about recipes and it was all failures and learning from more experiences hunters at the time. To the coolest and most epic fight to this day. Mt Shao Lung. I remember my very first time fighting him. A literal walking mountain. Way, way cooler than the modern games, it was mono e mono a race against time with how much dps you could pump out and not getting killed trampled setting up bombs hacking at the legs to hunting Diabalos or later.. the black dragon. Its a bit nostalgia but also fact, I be sure to remember this game because its very much a part of who I am and how I hold games to standard. If it doesn't use feel good mechanics like monster hunter then why not. Its the baseline standard to tell what's wrong in games at times and always a source of inspiration for me. I played it so much even after the servers went offline. To the very last day to the last hour I- you know its funny I hadn't realized it until now but I'm getting faint flash back memories of the people and names I used to play with. If anyone remembers Jenova lemme know! I know there is at least one of you out there :D I hope time has been treating you well. Well, I kept playing single player as a form of protest for the shitty hand held ports to psp etc. I played so much I wore out the reading optics of the console. I was able to prolong my ps2 for a while but.. I was able to get full black dragon armor online. Probably one of the few people ever to have full dragon armor set as it was only craftable in town. I'm sure there is a way to emulate it but still. I got my data on a memory card now, still. I had to comment. I love this game. To this day. To clarify the majority of the content of this game is actually online, to my surprise. [about 40% single player 60% online]

    Ah yes, the OG
    -Quests have registration fee
-Weapons controls use the right joystick
-No means to gather from maps without having to get into pre-existing undedicated quests
-Monster materials eat up space at the inventory and the ones attained in quest rewards CANNOT be sent straight to item box.
-Small monsters still don't give an f and would gang up with large monsters against you.
-While this was something that's entirely new to 5th gen, the fact that QoL was so undeveloped back then made it hurt so much in retrospect: there were no weapon utility safety nets! Today we are spoiled with infinite use of Whetstones and a Normal Bullet lvl1 being available by default.
Edit: Adding some more nostalgic inconveniences:
-You can't capture monsters outside of capture quests, considering the limitations of the og game and how frequent monsters changed Area, capturing a sleeping monster could have been a time saver (OG).
-Nearly every item procurement on the map is randomized, in 5th gen, utility and consumables-related items are guaranteed and doesn't initiate the "slot machine" animation (pre-5th gen).
-The Book of Combos, and the inability to combine stuffs INSIDE the storage box which plagued the series until recent years.
-Mining and Bug-catching used to be an economically exhausting activity because you needed breakable items to commit to those activities, which while can be crafted throughout combination, was simply way more convenient to buy... And of course, they consume space in your inventory.
-Recovering health at camp was awkward af, you need to have your character do a lengthy animation of them throwing themselves onto a mattress (yes, they brought those effing mattresses to the wilderness) and take a short nap. Now camp-healing is not tied to animation, as your character heals automatically as you enter inside and you can do other stuff all the while.

I started with Freedom Unite myself, And I do kind of miss certains aspects of the older games. Not so much the slowness of gathering, but rather the feeling of being a trapper/hunter, facing large beast. Where modern games are more Anime fights against big bosses. I feel like Generation, World and Rise are kind of their own beast, I love the more twitchy gameplay and Rise is definitely my second favourite game.

I've been playing MHFU through an emulator recently with the goal of reaching G-Rank, and one thing I noticed about these older games (specifically Pre-3rd Gen) is that the game is incredibly unfair, but at the same time, it has so many exploits that make the monsters act like babies while you bash their skulls in with your hammer.
Its unfair in the sense that monsters have hitboxes that make you cry, and that we have none of the quality of life changes we see today.
On the other hand, monsters can get stunlocked so easily because of the lack of KO cooldowns, flash bomb and trap deteriorations, and easy to exploit AI that you CAN do, but you dont HAVE to.
Comparing to what we have today, it's honestly amazing how tedious MHFU was, it makes me appreciate what we have today.
Having said all that, MHFU is a ton of fun.

MH1 was my yellow sleeve Monday gateway drug. You've made a point that other youtubers have talked as well that of the design difference as the series went on from Fantasy Hunting Simulator to Fantasy Hunting Action. Dos to me personally was the last of the Hunting Sim before they started leaning more towards Action and the 20min fight.
With all its pros and cons of modern MH there is still the divergent other path that has not been filled or explored with the series of a more robust Hunting Sim. I personally would love to see the 2020+ attempt at this style again.

Damn, this brings me memories: I'm surprised that I got hooked into the game right from the start. I didn't play it on release, I think I first played it in 2008, but it was so different from all of the hack'n'slash game that were populating the PS2 that I got really invested in it right from the get-go. Looking back at it, I realized that most of the time I spent with the game was farming for resources and money. First gathering the Kut Ku scales from dung and then doing the "Liver of Legend" quest for money and spending countless hours at mining points going after those Machalite Ores.
With that said, I still think it holds up pretty well. I mean, the core gameplay of Monster Hunter was already present in it and presented in a straight up manner: Kil monster -> Use its materials to craft its gear -> Use new equipment to kill tougher monsters -> Gather their materials and so on, its just that it lacks all of the QoL improvements we got with each new game in the series, with better controls (right stick analog for attacking was interesting back then, but I can't go back to it haha), better RNG, better monster AI, better mobility, access to farming items in the village, better and more rewards, less expensive crafting and purchasing, screen prompts for gathering/carving... If you take all of that way, you'll still get the original MH game, and I think that says a lot about how strong of a concept they had back then for this game that would eventually become a series.

Seriously, I spent FOREVER getting full iodrome armor and a iodrome bowgun, and i felt like it was UNUSABLE because of the god damn small monsters. Melee weapons are basically required solo. Combined with the fact that the psp was really not comfortable to play on, I just couldn't handle it. Now, I actually started playing the game again on an emulator, and it's a lot nicer to play with an xbox controller. What I really loved though was the dual blade progression. I finished the hurricane dual blade tree completely before even fighting velocidrome, which I found extremely funny. Surviving that as a true rookie to the series is a true mind breaker. Even then -- if you beat the egg carry quest, beating the actual true Rathalos hunt after is the a real challenge for most to pull off in under 50 mins. I had 3-4 different friends give up on the game on either the Kut-ku hunt, the egg carry quest, or the Rathalos hunt. None of them made it past and i was still left playing the game by myself lol.

i think a lot of ppl enjoyed the more realistic hunter stuff , farming, preparing and fight monsters. but some stuff i would like see to change like loading zones.

Some of the older games just have a different classic look that I’d be happy to see brought back somewhat. Neither over the top anime level unrealistic flashy gear nor boring over simplified realistic metal and bone copy pasted design. It’s more subtle, but each item has the spirit to show off what it was crafted from clearly.

Which is the reason Hunters to this day still play it in the hunterverse, because of the additional monsters, additional weapons and gear progression actually being more quicker. The only known flaws it had was the small monsters being a pain, hitboxes not being well optimized and food being difficult to keep track.

    • @xela4183
      @xela4183 Před 2 lety +10

Personally, I think Rise and World are a very good showcase of how difficulty should look. Both easy quests that casuals will enjoy, and more difficult challenges veterans will enjoy. In older games, you mostly had clunk and scaled up health to compensate for monsters being poorly designed.
Underwater combat, even though all the veterans may love it, is kind of a gimmick which isn't that good, which is kinda sad, because Lagiacrus highly benefits from the system.
As a guy who started with World, I just prefer newer games for less BS, but a complex game if you wanna invest in all of its mechanics.

I think the combat is great for the newer games, but don’t like gimmicks. If we can get a game as huge as world and as fun to move around in as rise with the simple movesets and flat areas of P3rd, that’s my dream. New MH is great, and I think there’s still a decent challenge available.

Unfortunately that’ll never happen. It’s a fact that people don’t like difficult games. The easier it is, the more people like it. That’s why underwater is gone, that’s why people talk about the “quality of life” in world/rise even though most of it is just streamlining to help the player get to a dps boss fight as fast as possible, and changing monster hunters combat from positioning and commitment based combat to counter based combat, which requires drastically less skill. Along with many other things making the games easier but there’s too much to list here.

I got this on launch when I was very young and it took me and my brother almost a year to tackle Kut Ku as we weren't playing the game in a way you're meant to play the game. We were getting bodied easily and now I look back after playing every MH game in the series and see how far its all come. This game may not be the best but it started everything and it's got a huge sense of nostalgia in the music and the environments for me. I'd love to see them remake Forest and Hills in the next game.
Though when I play new MH games post Gen U, it does make me miss the way old MH used to be and I'm not really sure how to put it into words. The QOL improvements are super good but something about having to prep for a big hunt, make all your gear ready and make sure everything was in your pouch was just fun to me.
