  • Michelle from Virtual Hand Care, answers the question: Should I Wiggle My Fingers in a Cast?
She will discuss how wiggling your fingers can be helpful in the beginning stages of healing. Wiggling your fingers is a very early phase movement that should be progressed to more effective movements that will further improve your fingers and thumb motion over time.
You may notice how quickly stiffness can set into your whole arm, when wearing a cast for several weeks. Wiggling your fingers for 6+ weeks is just not enough to prevent a stiff hand.
Unfortunately, it is very common for your shoulder, elbow, fingers and thumb to get stiff when you sustain a wrist or hand injury. This can occur because you can not move or use your injured hand with daily activities such as grasping or carrying objects.
Stick around to the end of the video, and Michelle will guide you through an exercise routine that can increase your finger and thumb motion in a cast when you are ready!
You'll find these finger and thumb exercises are great if you are noticing finger stiffness settling in after a broken wrist or hand surgery.
    No equipment is needed!
As always check with your doctor to make sure you can perform these shoulder and arm exercises. (See our full disclaimer below)

I'm so glad I found your video! I've had my cast on 3 weeks tomorrow and I've been wriggling fingers and thumb from the beginning which helped to reduce swelling. But I was worried that I shouldn't have been doing this. But now after finding your video I'm reassured! My cast will be coming off this week so I'll be watching your other videos for more exercises. Many Thanks for doing these videos ❤

Am in a cast following a Colles fracture. If I hadn't found your video, I would have thought wigglng my fingers was enough, and would have been at a huge disadvantage after cast removal. Thank-you SO much!

Hi thanks so much for your videos! My grandma broke her elbow recently :( surgery is 2 weeks away and her fingers are super swollen in her cast and they tell her to move her hands but it’s not reducing…. Do you recommend something else?

Hi, currently wearing a cast for 6 weeks, 4 weeks left until i remove my cast due to a hamate fracture injury. I ve injured my dominant right hand. Do you recommend working remotely using the mouse with my right hand or should I completely not use my right injured hand until my cast is removed? Thanks!

Hi. I just got a new cast at 4 weeks in, bc my thumb was pinched and numb. My new cast is now too tight, too long and too close to all my fingers, knuckles. I’m swollen again, pinched, w slight crossing. The styloid process is throbbing too. Its the weekend, drs office is closed. How can I help myself quickly relieve finger, knuckle pain? I saw that cast shears might be able to cut off a little and allow some space. How? Would you make a CZcams video?

Hi. I find your videos interesting because not only the exercises but the info and clear voice ( my native language is Spanish) This time I have a little doubt about this movements are recommended for fractures only or with nerves and tendons injuries too? Thanks.

Typically you can move what ever is not in a cast or splint. And it varies greatly depending on the surgery. When it comes to nerves or tendon injuries there are important protocols to follow.

You mentioned that a cat shouldn’t be so tight that it compresses the nerves and blood supplies to your hand. What about if it’s so tight that it’s feels like it’s smashing and bruising your bones like the one that sticks out from your wrist? I feel like my cast was poorly fitted to my wrist and is becoming very painful at the wrist bone
