I am freaking out ... Cast was too tight and high up my fingers couldn't move them at all. Dr insisted on 4 weeks with the cast. Cast came off 3 days ago and I can't move any of my wrist fingers or rotate my arm. Excruciating pain. I knew I should've had the cast cut off the first week.

I fell on ice one month ago and fractured my wrist, my dominant arm. I got a closed reduction on the break and was casted. I’ve had this cast for one month now. Wearing a cast on my arm has made me very anxious. The cast is too tight and uncomfortable. I’m due to get my cast off in nine days, and then wear a brace, I cannot wait to get this cast off my arm. Having so much trouble sleeping at night. I am so miserable.

Totally relate. I am a 72 year old right handed woman and shattered the radius and broke the ulna in August. Was told only to pick up a half of a cup of coffee. Very frustrating. Just starting strengthening exercises. BUT the exercise so helpful. Not helpful is being told “at your age” everything will take longer. So I am trying very hard to prove that wrong. Hopefully these videos will be a big help.

Yes, having your dominant wrist broken is truly bad.. but... having both wrists broken at the same time is worse. Ugh. Thats what I have. One had 5 fractures and required a plate and screws... the other luckily was simply broken without the need for surgery. It took 12 days until I could get the surgery since it happened right before the Christmas holidays. Im 3 weeks post op and working very hard to regain some use in my fingers and wrist with my removable cast on my surgical wrist. Im an avid golfer and want so very bad to get back to the golf course. Im started PT a few days ago and will do so for a couple of months or so. Im also looking for helpful videos to assist me in my healing. My motivation to get back to golfing is pushing me to work hard on regaining the use of my wrists. Good luck to all who have been affected by a broken wrist... or worse yet... both wrists...

@@carolinallanos1399 Im 12 weeks out from original fall causing 2 broken wrists... and 10 weeks post op on the one wrist that got a plate and 9 screws. It has been a difficult road but things are certainly improving. I still am in twice weekly OT to try to regain function. Got a few issues but MD feels most tend to resolve by 6 months or so. He said its likely that I will lose about 25% of my ROM. So how did I break them both? The short version of the story is my neighbor's dog charged me in the street in front of my home. I tried to back up quickly to get away from the dog but stumbled backwards landing on my wrists. I tried to get up quickly so the dog wouldn't chew on my neck. When I pushed up, I knew immediately that my wrists were broken. This all happened on Christmas Eve Eve. Its been a few very rough months but things are getting better now.

Very well said! What this lady is suggesting is that understanding your body is everything! When you have a traumatic experience such as, breaking a bone or loss of function too a limb that you are not used too losing function of, you're first reaction is to not move that limb until it has healed. The only way for that limb to repair itself is by learning to use the muscles surrounded it again. By letting the injury seize and contract without any input for long periods of time, you will only immobilize that limb even more. That's not saying that if it is very painful, then carry on! You should never over do it but at the same time, do not let that limb stay stagnant for too long! This lady explains it better than I ever could, so many thanks too her for looking out for us and sharing this information! The true heroes never wear capes... and for some reason, everyone loves capes until their life depends on it! Thank you so much!👍How the f**k is it that our taxes don't support people like you, but instead go to the 1% that suck everything beautiful out of this planet dry, I will never understand! A good deed wasted at the hands of corporate greed! There's so many beautiful minds that will switch off if money didn't wake them up every morning! It's a sad dying world full of greedy human parasites! Money controls our pathetic existence!

i just broke my wrist last week. Really whats hurt even more than my wrist is most of the rest of my body: I fell down most of a flight of concrete steps. so ive basically been feeling like i got hit by a bus. Saw the Ortho Doc for the first time yesterday and she said what i was afraid of, :You DEFINITELY need surgery:😫anyway I'm worried about how much independence i can maintain over the next 3 or more months. doing things one handed is so hard as you all well know. I dont have a husband and my daughter has done what she can but shes got her own stresses and responsibilities. Any suggestions for resources about living day to day with a broken wrist?

Your comments about therapy are interesting and your videos are great. I had a distal radius fracture, without displacement, six weeks ago. After my cast came off (this week), my doctor told me I should wait three more weeks before starting therapy. I was not OK with that so I asked him for the prescription-- so that I could start as soon as possible. Doctor also didn't recommend exercises with my fingers while the cast was on; but of course it hurt much more then and I was afraid of disturbing the healing. I'd like to know whether it's OK to go without the brace during the day, when I'm home. You said somewhere that we would wear the brace 15 hours a day, so perhaps that means only at night and when I leave the house.

Terrific video telling patients some basic things to do during healing. I will add that the most common problem I see is a surgeon is not having that fracture fixed when it is displaced enough that will later limit function greatly the newer techniques, allow for a simple outpatient procedure that will allow much faster recovery since the wrist fracture is now stabilized. Collaboration with our valued therapy colleagues is critical as mentioned in this very good video

Thank you Dr. Badia for bringing awareness to this common problem. You are right, there is a lot of benefit to fixation of even the mildly displaced fx you mentioned. The daily struggle with post traumatic pain and swelling, loss of motion, numbness/tingling, months of stiff fingers, and more can be minimized.

Definitely agreed, one must try to move the fingers, shoulder and arm which is not the Brien wrist, otherwise the other parts become very stiff and the swelling take longer time to recover.

Thank you for this video, ive been out of cast for a few days, only had it on only two weeks as i had surgery for plate and screws and he sad to slowly get moving straitght away. ive been referred for the therapy but know it may take a while, so have benn doing very gentle strecthing/rubbing/heat exercises on my own. I never do anything to PAIN, but just that very slight ache sensation, and then hold it there while gently massaging. Sound about right?

  • @patriciamcinerney9592

Very informative video…..I think my cast was placed too high on hand which hindered hand mobility once cast was removed…wish I had seen your video sooner…now working my way back with scheduled therapy and home exercises…

Broke four metacarpal bones in my hand, distal radius, and ulnar in my wrist on August 9th. Got caught up in hazard tape while cycling by a construction site. Had a plate and pins placed at HSS. Pins were removed two weeks ago and will have the plate swapped out for a smaller one by December. PT twice a week. Keep up the good fight!

I fell hard on ice on concrete on March 7th and shattered my wrist and had surgery on the 15th to put in a locking plate. My cast doesn't come off until the 27th but I have been moving and exercising my thumb and fingers. The thumb has less movement because the cast is in the way and my thumb is very sore and everything is still fairly swollen. I'm looking forward to going to physical therapy just as soon as this cast comes off. I've been looking at some of your videos for exercises that I can do now and for when the cast comes off.
