- Today's video covers rehab exercises for trigger finger. Trigger finger or ‘stenosing tenosynovitis’ describes a condition in which inflammation of the sheath that envelops the finger flexor tendons occurs leading to impaired finger movement.
In these cases, stiffness is the typical first symptom, which can progress to the point where the finger becomes locked in a bent position (see image) and the other hand is needed to push the finger straight. A painful snap or click will often occur as the finger is straightened.
Traumatic injuries, repetitive gripping and arthritis can lead to the development of trigger finger. However, there are other cases where the cause is unknown and can be related to systemic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.
Trigger finger can often be managed conservatively and should involve a combination of behavior modification (managing finger usage), anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone injections, ice, splinting (if necessary) and tendon gliding exercises. In more severe cases, surgery may be required to restore normal finger function.
Shown in this post are several tendon gliding exercises, which can be used in conjunction with the inflammation reduction strategies listed above. Aim for 10 repetitions of each movement 2-3 times per day.

Congratulations for 3 lakh Subscribers ❤❤❤❤
Nice and easy exercise.
Thanks for this excersises it helps me
Thank you Soo Much for great Finger exercise
Thanks a lot
Thanks for sharing. Doing the exercises daily. I have no pain just this jumping joint in my ringfinger. Some days are better than others but it just doesn't seem to heal completely
Thanks! A very helpful video.
Glad it was helpful!
thank you for sharing your expertise
My pleasure!
I think a thing to note here is that this would be advisable at a certain stage in recovery or in very mild cases.
I'd strongly recommend people don't exercise when they have a repetitive strain related tendinopathy, as exercise is often repetitive in nature itself.
As long as the "trigger" or snap is still present relative rest/ splinting or anti inflammatories combined with light use during daily activities would be more advisable.
Rehab science folks, can you please confirm this because I still get a click when I do your exercises and I'm concerned it might be better to just use passive exercises using my other hand irather than active.thanks.
What do you do when at night to keep your trigger fingers from not moving?
You can buy triggerfinger splints online that block movement. I would always advise to check with a GP or specialist though, sometimes symptoms can be similar to triggerfinger but it might be another issue.
Very thorough on the exercises.
Can putting pressure on the tendon nodule followed by ice reduce its size?
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I went to the doctor for multiple issues including shooting pain, trigger finger, and bad wrists. He wanted me to get a test done to see if I had carpel tunnel. Which was insanely expensive and fairly unpleasant. The result was no carpel tunnel. As soon as i started to do stretching I started to have relief. However, it looks like I messed up my tendons from the hands down into my arms. So I think something worth noting is that these tendons are connected into the arms and doing exercises stretching the arms can help with the hands I would assume? It is good to know we can do these things. Some may assume that doing nothing is the right thing to do to let these things heal. But it seems that isnt always the case.
Can you provide any tips for thumb a1 pulley edema ?
Thanks ,❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks. I hope that it'll be helpful for my dad😇
I hope so too!
sir I have a gap lumbar spine disc please make video this problem and exersise 😢
Thank you. The problem just started this week on my right ring finger with waking up finding it locked. Hoping these will help avoid it getting worse.
Hi doc,how about if not close open may finger.
I have trigger finger in my middle finger. It was getting stuck often in a locked position. I had a cortisone shot to relieve it and it was the worst pain. I’ve had cortisone shots in other areas and in the hand was by far the worst! It didn’t help or resolve the issue either. Exercise is the best. Thanks for sharing these exercises.
Did these exercises help?
I can literally agree on this, except it really did help my issue! I've not had many shots in other areas, but I'm not too much of a wuss when it comes to pain either but this literally knocked me sick the pain was so intense!
@@0bfuscated Glad you guys mentioned this. I'll make sure to refuse cortisone for mine. To me it's just a bandaid anyway, not really addressing the cause.
I had no idea what this was called for the longest time, when i noticed a mild case of it in my pinky upon waking up today I did some research and found this. It works great and also seems to help my joint and nerve pain, Thank you!
I'm glad the video was helpful!
Hello. I just had the exact same situation happen to me 2 days ago in my pinky. I am going to start applying heat to it, doing stretches, and taking Motrin. How long did it take for you to make it go away?
@@hardball7428 it's definitely reduced, but not fully gone away just yet. It only happens in the morning now and then my pinky is totally normal for the rest of the day.
I'm still doing the same job that gave me the issue in the first place so it's probably not gonna heal fully yet until I stop the repetitive motions. Let me know if yours gets better!
@@evnbd1370 I went to the doctors and they told me me to do exercises and heat it up. And after two weeks if it isn’t gone then they might inject a steriod if I want them to. How do you think you got it? For me it was golfing and I slept on it wrong
@@hardball7428 Hey, updating you. Today I woke up and instead of checking to see if it was still there, I relaxed and kept my pinky straight for a while. It seemed to help. I'd recommend maybe not doing the exercises or bending it for a few days to see if it helps, giving it a break has helped for me. Maybe also get some trigger finger splints or something to avoid bending it!
I've had this in my two small fingers on my right hand...this is the 6th week and finally getting better...used ice, exercises, etc.
Glad to hear it is starting to improve!
Before only in the morning my ring finger stiff now it already sever allday when i bend it will lock and stack in fold position
Do these 5 trigger finger exercises cure (if caught early) or prevent trigger finger?
Can those exercises straighten my triggers fingers on my both hands .? Those fingers are having a sort of curved joint under their nails.
That was helpful. I did not know it was called trigger finger.
Thanks so much for these exercises. Unfortunately most of us will not be able to make a fist, as it will be very painful and trigger the lock, which will worsen the condition.
True! I thought making a fist was one of the worst things you could do for trigger finger.
How many Days take from Tigger finger pain relief please tell me
& How many Days do this exercises
I thought I had gout or arthritis until I had a cbc, xray, creatinine and uric acid test and all were clear. the issue was me working out lifting heavy weights coz I rested my hands for a week they were doing OK then I started lifting heavy weight yesterday and man when I woke up my hands are stiff again and my pinkies on both left and right hands are the wost but the whole hand was like stiff and painful. I guess my working out days are over.
Maybe check blood glucose levels. Apparently it affects tendons and joints first
I dislocated my pinky and I’m unable to bend my ring finger by itself without my middle finger and pinky bending? And help on that
Exercise rehab for trigger finger. It is good if you dont have trigger finger because I tried it just for my fingers to lock up unable to do the exercise.
For some people with more severe trigger finger, these exercises may not be possible and exploring other interventions (injections, splints and surgery) is probably more appropriate.
I trying but not working
Isn't the display exercise the same one that you showed for carpal tunnel syndrome?
Those two movements are quite similar, but have very different goals. In one case, the goal is to mobilize the median nerve, and for trigger finger the goal is to help improve tendon movement.
@@RehabScience The finger movements is instinctual after gripping an object, but when I raised my arms into the goal post position, it was even more effective, less locking. Thank you so much!
my middle finger sometimes get stuck. would still these exercises help?
I think that is when you need the cortisone shot. It is happening to me now. I have an appt
What if I can't make a fist doing the third exercise? My ringer finger is a bit swollen from the trigger finger inflammation I have. I can't afford the physical therapy so I'm trying these exercises to help me.
I also can't make a fist. I know that it is not good to activate the trigger lock.

Making a 'fist' causes the triggering......

It does with me too. But I find if you “roll” and “unroll” your fingers into this position as he shows here, it doesn’t seem to cause the triggering… that’s just my experience though. :D
Can u tell me why I have trigger thumb in one hand and a trigger finger in the other. I'm exhausted
Me too!!
trigger finger on left mid finger..Exercises #1 and 2...not too bad......#3.absolutely cant do the curl, thats for sure ,that finger wont bend ...#4, the trace...no problem until my thumb traces the left mid finger, it causes burning right at the base of the finger..interesting.and #5, the splay, wow..I feel it mostly where the nodule has developed an inch below mid finger...these are interesting exercises , I look fwd to getting rid of this little horror show. Its painful , do you recommend a splint of some sort, so it wont get triggered during the day? Thanks Tom...good video and the book looks good too, I was checkin it out on Amazon ...:)
Thank you for the comment! I hope these exercises help relieve your symptoms. Yes, a splint is often helpful when working to reduce tendon irritation when using your hand during the day. Here is a simple one on Amazon that might be worth trying. a.co/d/786jTWl
P.S. thank you for checking out my book! It is very comprehensive and covers each region of the body, so I am confident you would find it to be a helpful resource.
can you know price of rehab book ❤
When I do the curl squeeze the finger snaps.. are you supposed to continue when it snapps?
I would stop just prior to the snap on that one.
@@RehabScience Thank you that's good to know. I must say however too bad that's not in the video. Imagine the people who didn't think to ask that are performing the exercise three times a day snapping away.
@@hilosurf It’s quite difficult to cover every potential question that comes up in a video. There are many questions that I field in the comments section and they vary depending on the person’s situation. A short CZcams video cannot possibly cover everything, which is why I wrote a 500 page rehab book.
Another sales pitch!

Good video But, 5 minutes before we get to the useful bit
Understanding the condition is also useful for many people.
Then learn to use video scrubbing, Peter.
