Welcome back to the Least Used Stations series. In today's video, I will be talking about the least used station for the 5 Line, Morris Park. If you enjoy this video, don't forget to drop a like and subscribe to the channel!
Morris Park is already interesting in the fact that it’s partially elevated and underground.
The station entrance is in a cul de sac at the corner of Paulding Avenue and the Esplanade. It still retains the NYWB logos on the station entrance. It's my home station. BTW, I'm a retired NYCT TO.
Very cool to see some MTA/Former MTA Operators watching the videos. When I was there, I actually didn't see the NYW&B logos (Although, I don't think I was paying much attention).
@@MysticTransit I ran a lot of trains past that station, from R12s, through R142s. BTW, my last run is on CZcams. The Retired Motorman's Last run is the title.
I lived in 1005 esplanade and 1025. 1960-1970
I’m a Pelham Gardens resident, so I’m not far from this station. I’m rarely take the trains anymore but when I do, I like to get off here and take a long walk home.
Aside from the excessive bird poop, I think it’s a decent station. I don’t think the bus service isn’t terribly far from the station. It’s a short 3 minute walk. It’s not that bad. It’s also not too far from Williamsbridge Road and Pelham Parkway which are both main thoroughfares. The stretch of Williamsbridge road that it’s close to has a lot of shops and eateries so I wouldn’t say there’s nothing to do around there. I think it’s fine that it’s in a residential area. That said, the Pelham Parkway stop right before it is way closer to williamsbridge road
This series is very interesting, I'm learning a lot about the NYC subway and its history. Great Video!
Glad you enjoyed it, I enjoy making these videos, and providing all of you with more information on the subway system!
I didn't expect this to be a least used station
Because it has trees
It's very beautiful with alot of plants and trees and it's all alone
lol
@@MysticTransit yeah it's really peaceful and it's so wonderful to see plants and trees
Surprisingly the NYW&B never ran steam trains, but rather was electrified with overhead catenary from the start. It's somewhat noticeable here, as the height of the tunnel is far above the subway trains, which would've left space for the wire. The bases of some of the catenary bridges can be seen along the line too.
That's interesting. I never knew that, thanks for the info.
The NYWB would be a great video idea. The abandoned Westchester station is still there.
Who remembers when you had to pay your fare ON the 5 train at night? You had to drop your token or your change in a bus fare box.
I used to live by the Morris Park station… but I never took it since it was quite the walk from my apartment. Instead just took the Bx21 bus to E 180th lol
Love the videos bro, definitely enjoying this series.
I enjoy making the videos. Definitely gonna keep it going.
Esplanade is not an avenue, nor is it a street or a road. It's just Esplanade, much to the likings of Broadway.
Oh shit, I used to live in Morris Park back in the day! lol
Basically the station is used more for the people that live in those houses near the station
I used to take the 5 train there back in highschool. Problem is it was so confusing trying to find the station so I ended up walking to the Bronx Park East 2 Train Station instead since it was easier to find it
2:06 I thought it had Siemens propulsion...
All Bombardier R142s have Alstom propulsion.
@@pbatommy I know that I'm saying that it sounded like it had a motor swap for a second
Well Morris Park is a more upper middle class neighborhood of the Bronx. So I’m honestly not surprised
this was my old stop!!!! i had no idea but probably could've guessed hahaha
Correction: The center test track is now used for reroutes for trains running express between East 180 Street and Dyre Ave stopping @ Pelham Parkway when track work is done on the uptown or downtown tracks. Thanks for video and info on 5 line.
I’ve never seen or heard of a 5 train running express down the Dyre Avenue Line, so I didn’t mention it in the video.
@@MysticTransit ok! It does happen when the MTA has planned service changes on the line.
Never knew that. Ima have to check on the NYCRail subreddit, and with a couple of my operator friends to find out when it’s happened, and how often.
@@MysticTransit there was a planned service change 2 weeks ago during the week bc I remember getting on the 5 train @Pelham Parkway and it ran express going uptown to Dyre Ave.
@@MysticTransit I live by the 5 line between Baychester and Dyre and Tom is correct. The middle track has also been used to store trains during major service changes.
The MORRIS PARK station was the station individuals would use to go to the MORRIS PARK RACETRACK [trotters] at the turn of the 20th Century,
pog
There seems to be a correlation between being next to either a terminus or interchange and being quiet
Well, stations that are near a terminus aren't used much, unless they are in a heavily populated area. [34 St (7), 96 St (Q), 148 St (3)] Also, when near an interchange, like 69 St (7), the station won't see much ridership, as people will favor the station with the most connections.
@@MysticTransit it seems that terminus stations might serve a larger area or feed into the subway more than a through station.
It seems so.
I live in the Bronx
Can you make a video on Pelham parkway (underground) since its my favorite station
Can't wait for the A train vid and the actual least used station in NYC. Or are you gonna treat the Rockaway shuttle as a separate line?
The shuttles won't get their own videos. Also, I cannot guarantee that the (A) Train video will come out soon. Since it is the least used station in the system, I might end up skipping it and going straight to the (B) Line, to leave the (A) for last.
@@MysticTransit Yeah, I suppose it should be the last one. Any ideas on what you're gonna do after that? Something on all the abandoned stations would be pretty cool.
I’m not sure how I can do an Abandoned Stations series without actually going to the stations, and that would require trespassing, something I’m not willing to do.
I might do videos on the Most Used Stations in each borough, or a Most Interesting Stations. I might also do some series’ about the history of some of the lines in the system.
I’ll start thinking more about what ima do after this series later down the line, but we have about another 15/18 Weeks until it’s over soooo.
@@MysticTransit Yeah, fair enough, you'd basically be filming yourself committing a crime and posting the evidence online. Can't wait to see what you eventually come up with.
There'll definitely be more content after this series is finished. I've been thinking more about what do after it, and came up with a couple of ideas, like regular railfanning, station tours, histories of the rolling stock, and more.
I called it, last video i predicted that for the 6 it would be 143 st and yep i got it. And spoiler, if you want to know why its basically a similar situation to Morris park, there nothing there. The only reason anyone would use the station is either the live nearby, they're working nearby or i guess if you want to head to nearby park.
Yeah, I'm familiar with the area around E 143 St. Barely anyone gets on and off of the train there. Like you said, it's really only for people who live in the area.
No one really goes to that station for the park, unless they are coming from the park. People usually take the Bx19, or the (6) to E 149 St or Cypress Avenue.
It’s like that for the (7) line 69th (nice) street too.
@@CZcamsLover123 I don't know why that station was built. It is close to two stations which have much greater amounts of traffic, 61st which is an express stop and 74th which has a transfer to the IND E/F/M/R lines.
I'm surprised that it isn't Pelham Parkway on the Sure av line
Is it possible to bring commuter service back to this line instead of extending the Harlem line Metro North Third Express Track?
It's possible, but it would take money, and it wouldn't get a lot of use without a similar fare to the subway. People are already used to the subway service here. They wouldn't want to trade that.
I'd say leave it as is.
I used to use this train and the 2 train freeman and simpson
This explain why the "5" runs a split service (WPR and Dyer Avenue).
The 5 Runs to Dyre as its normal routing. The reason it branches to WPR During Rush, is to provide easier service to WPR Riders coming from Lex, and to provide more service along WPR for the increased congestion.
@@MysticTransit I was told some years ago, another reason for the split schedule is bc of spacing issues at Dyre Ave. If the MTA ever decided to have all 5 trains go to Dyre which will never happen for the reasons u mentioned, some of those trains will have to end at East 180 St. The same goes for the 5 train when it goes to Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn during rush hours. Some trains go to either Utica or New Lots Ave.
@@tombarzey7964 The reason for some 4 and 5 trains going to/from New Lots Ave. during rush hours is that they are laid up in Livonia Yard which primarily serves the 3 line. This reduces the amount of dead head operation needed to start rush hour service as the only other yards on these lines are in the Bronx.
3:56 AYO PAUSE
Yiiiiiiiiikesss
2nd yay
ahahahaha geoff marshall
Poor service and nearby alternatives
Honestly, there's not many alternatives. The only other train line that is remotely close is the (2) Line at Pelham Parkway, and that is still about a Mile or so away. The station is also well served. When I was there getting service, trains were coming in upwards of 3-7 Minute Headways.
