    Got my Lanter about a month ago. Damn, I love the thing!! You are absolutely right, terrific value for almost no money!
    And I think I've worked out how to gel it - put the grid cloth down to see bare rods, then turn a piece of gel arond them forming a cone, wrap around the mount at the "bottom" and clip it together at the "nose"(I prefere using tiny sping clamps). Works fine, all the light is filtered and nothing gets burned) Great review, as always, Andrew!

    You have more knowledge than all the other youtube filmmakers put together. So thanks for putting these videos together. Quick question, which might be a stupid one.. How well does this work as a regular softbox, like for an interview? Is there anything dis-advantageous to just using it like a regular softbox, rather than like a china ball from overhead? Could save some space in my kit and a few bucks by buying just this instead of this and their 'light dome'. Thanks!

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před 4 lety +2

      Both different uses. For a basic interview I would go the light dome, because it has a bigger surface area facing the subject it would be softer.

    I'm so glad I found our channel. This information is fantastic. Thank you for making these! I'm an independent filmmaker looking to extend my personal gear for smaller side projects. Two quick question if you're up for it.
    1. I think I'm sold on the Aputure Dome Light II over the Nicefoto Softbox. They're very similar, but the Aputure has the gel holder component. However, the Nicefoto is $100 cheaper. Does choosing the Aputure seem like the wise choice?
    2. As for a lantern option, I've noticed Aputure has 26" and 47" versions. The larger being about $50 higher. Would you think it's wiser to go ahead and buy the larger version and just use the skirts to limit what I don't need, if applicable? It's hard to know how easy or cumbersome the 47" will be until I have it on set. I've also have people suggest the Godox lantern, which is around 33", but it doesn't really save much at all on the price. Curious if the 47" is the wisest move there.
    Apologies for the info dump. Thanks so much for any advice!

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před 3 lety +3

      For me, larger is better, because it will give you a softer light, but it comes down to what will fir on set. As you can see that one hangs down a fair bit and that's the small one.
      I haven't seen the Nicefoto soft boxes so I can't give an honest answer.

    Imagine, going from wildfire concerns in January, to flood concerns in February, to Corona virus today! Crazy! Thanks for taking my mind off the shelter-in-place order, Andrew. BTW, would there be a disadvantage to gelling the light prior to attaching the lantern? I'm guessing that a heat-rated gel cut to the size of the COB aperture wouldn't melt.

      @@gaffergear Makes sense. I'm currently trying to decide whether to get a Nanlite Forza 200 vs 300B because of that. Being a one man band on set mostly, I figured the Forza 200 would be better since it can be operated with a single V mount, however the 300B is way more versatile. Any thoughts? :D Guess no piece of gear is perfect ;)

    I'm looking into getting one of these to simulate a light above a table for a poker scene, probably with an Aputure 300d or Forza. What kind of stand and boom arm would you recommend to safely rig this up over a table? Each shot would be focused on one person at a time so it doesnt need to be completely overhead and hidden for a wide shot

  • @joelarvidsson
    @joelarvidsson Před 4 lety +1

    Hope you get some persistant rain soon. One question. Youre boom is rated for 10kg at 3 meters. But the 6.8 kg counterbalance can just hold an empty boom at 3m. What counter weights are you using for maxing 10kg at 3 meter?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před 4 lety +3

      I just use an additional shot bag, a 3 kg light is the heaviest thing I put on it, usually just a bi-color 4x1 mat or a 3x3 Aladdin 350. This set up is at what I would consider to be full extension for the weight, and even here it is a fraction front heavy.
      It's a pain the the bulk of the corner weight is to counter the arm not the light, but I've found that lighter weight poles just flex into shot.
      If the light is locked into a position I will use a ratchet strap from the rear of the pole to the base of the stand to make sure that the arm can't lower forwards.

  • @marcomarco2198
    @marcomarco2198 Před 2 lety

    First of all, your videos are invaluable. I’ve tried to read every comment here and I can see you’ve responded quite a few times…very patiently to say the least… mentioning that you are using the avenger d650. I’ve looked at it online and can’t figure out how you’re moving the boom up and down without adjusting the balance, and I thought this arm had to be locked and couldn’t be adjusted without it being so or a second person helping. Is someone off screen helping you, when you move it around like that? I do realise the lantern and light is not very heavy. If I used an Aputure 600d with 90cm lantern, would I have the same ease and flexibility as you’ve shown? Hopefully I’ve made some sense with my question:)

    @brightlightfilm. Před 2 lety

    Hi Andrew, fantastic video as always. I'm thinking to get the lantern 90 instead of the "regular" lantern, but I'm a bit worried that it might become too heavy for a boom arm setup like you have it in the video. Have you by any chance used a 600d/x with a lantern 90 on a boom? I'm thinking to use it as a soft far side key for a two-people-talk-to-each-other-in-arm-chairs situation, instead of a classic back cross key setup.

    So I made the mistake of buying two of the godox versions of these, to use with my apurture 300d lights. They are bowens mount so I figured it would work fine.
    They won’t even mount to the lights, because the speed ring cylinder that has the bowens notches is too short.
    The only solution I can think of to fix this is to shave down the metal notches so that they are shorter, which might allow them fit into the 300d mount.

      @@RayValdezPhotography I've only had them about 4 months so a bit too early to say for sure, but I haven't had any issues yet. Build quality is strong, but the build quality on aputure is stronger. If I was traveling a lot with these in luggage I think aputure would be my choice, but as they are just bouncing around in a gaffer truck their fine

      Not yet, some people are making cylinders out of gels, I just use the 300x if I want tungsten.

    Can you recommend a list of grip & lighting equipment needed for an owner-operator grip van? I just got a Peugeot Partner but have no idea what else do i need other than lights, frames, stands etc

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před 4 lety

      I can't really say, because my kit is very different to other gaffers I know. We all work differenty in different budget sectors. For example if I can't carry it by myself, I don't get it.
      Start by asking the circle of DPs you know. What do they want you to have that you dont have. Or what gear would get you hired more by them.
      Start compiling a wish list that way.
      Then ask your circle of producers how much money they typically allow in the budget for grips and lights. From that point you can start to figure out what's practical to invest in, and what will never happen on that wish list.
      Just remember, when your starting out you don't have a lot of gear, but your clients also don't have a lot of money. So don't worry about what you don't have, because if your client could afford that gear, they could afford a more experienced gaffer and you wouldn't be on that shoot getting the opertunity experience and contacts.
      Don't buy any light you can't make profit on in under 3 years, because it will be obsolete.

      @@gaffergear hey thanks for the reply! I'm actually the one that hires DPs and Gaffers but they're hard to please. They always ask me to get them M12s, M18s, Skypanels and I get that its a safe choice but I'm spending too much on rentals. I'm sure you understand how difficult it is to convince other gaffers to use LEDs haha.
      So now I'm trying to build my own set that has all the essentials but I still can't figure out what to get haha, mostly because I have limited space in my Peugeot Partner
      Don't buy anything that I cant carry by myself is a great tip though. Won't be getting a dana dolly i guess

      Grid cloth is a common industry diffusion. It is stitched in a grid formation so that if you get a hole in the Fabric it won't become a tare.
