- Gaffer & Gear 52 - Skin Care Commercial - Glamour Shots
A run through of some lighting setups for a skin care commercial I worked on about a year ago.
A big thank you to Cinematographer Rod Pollard
Please note I was coming down with the flu as I was shooting this, so my apologies if my dialog is not clear! - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Great breakdown with fantastic detail of very fine looking footage! You are a credit to your profession. Thank you for taking the time to share. When I hear the murmurings of "you're giving away all the secrets" I think it comes from a lack of global awareness that this is actually the way mentoring is done now and when we share knowledge it makes us all better members of whatever crew we're on. Keep it up:)
Period.
Everybody involved should be grateful for their shots being shown, instead of trying to block it.
This here is free promotion for everybody.
@@OldSchoolFilm1930 For an old 1930s film school, you show little 1930s filmmaking techniques.
@@21stcenturyscots Indeed. I prefer a 3kg camera insteaed of a 1 ton monster.
Instead of me watching a new camera announced every three months, I will invest my time to this channel and learn the art. keep it up, I HAVE SUBSCRIBED.
for real bro, skill over gear, always and forever
Invaluable content here. Can't thank you enough. The fact that you're taking the time to share this with us is very, very appreciated.
Simply brilliant. I've watched over 200 videos on video and photography and this is my first comment. Thank you so much for sharing! Thought I wanted to shoot photos but have been leaning towards video and this touched me deeply.
These videos are soooo helpful... At first I was saying “This dude needs way more subscribers” but then I remembered, this content is for those of us that really want to geek out and are REALLY serious about the craft of producing high end content... Again thank you
Well yes, but I'm a hobbyist photographer and this knowledge direct from the Pro world is so "illuminating"! The excellent presentation would certainly be worthy of a "Learn with the Pros" online course, Skillshare.com for example.
I really appreciate that as a working professional, you're taking the time to do these. Lots of "expert" CZcamsrs around (creating great shots with DSLRS etc, no disrespect to them), but not many commercial operators taking the time to share their expertise and experience. Thanks.
Doing the Lord’s work, thank you from a young pup.
What a noble cause! I'm not working in the same industry, but the knowledge sharing, the respect of people is probably a topic in every business. Thanks for sharing with and inspiring your audience!
Andrew. Mate. At the end of the video where you talk about people up the food chain that don't respect our work, is so true. Thanks for all the videos you do, I'm a younger gaffer and I appreciate your videos so much. Thanks mate
Thank you very much! Your videos are my morning song and my lullaby. Great!
Hello from snowy Russia 🥂
Thank you for sharing Andrew. I think your channel is gold, showing young people interested in the industry that there's more to the visual side than simply Director or DOP. Having worked under an experienced Gaffer for 4 years, the knowledge I've gained and respect for the Gaffer is unmeasurable for my long term goal as DOP of features. I still Gaff from time to time on smaller shoots in my home town, and can resonate that perception by many: Gaffers put lights on stands. Gaffers are at the tip of the spear of productions with knowledge and advise that is suuuuuper valuable.
You are the best. If the industry had people like you it would be a joy for everyone to work.
Amazing video! Absolute wealth of incredible information
Learning so much from your channel. Thank you for your efforts in putting these videos together.
You are a skilled craftsman - thanks for sharing!
I'm blessed to have been introduced to this channel. So much love for you and what you do. Thanks!!
I am soaking knowledge and I am saying to myself no investment in cameras can outweigh lighting and it's understanding. Thank you for this video
This is so amazing!!! Thank you so much for such a wonderful wealth of knowledge you are sharing!!! It is a real honor to have this channel available for the world to learn from!!
Cheers Andrew! Your parting comment meant a lot. I worked in Hollywood for thirty years, mostly as a lighting tech and later gaffer. Because I was a member of the IA (a labor union) I often felt my contributions were discounted. You are lucky to be affiliated with a DP who values your work, instead of simply taking all the credit. Your lighting is beautiful and it is appropriate that people are made aware that this is a team effort -where all the members of a crew bring something special to the job. I am happy to see that you still use old school tech as well. This is the best time to be in the business, where the advantages of the new and the old can be blended together with amazing results! Thank you!
I’m just at the beginning of cinematography and I watch your channel to avidly lean lighting techniques, skills and creative use so videos like this are gold dust for us small end guys who have to do our own lighting as well as filming due budget. Brill 👍
Thank you for the detailed breakdown and the lengths you've gone to make this available, it's very valuable and most appreciated!
Stumbeled upon your channel. Great video. Thanks
Thank you so much for this kind of videos .
Thanks for sharing. Awesome work and a refreshing dose of generosity.
Love the lesson and the message at the end. Thank you!
Thank you for showing us your work. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
thanks for the breakdown. best content i've seen for quite a while!
I watched most of your video but this one is the best by far - would love to see more of this style. Thanks so MUCH !!
I absolutely agree with your comment about letting the upper people that lighting department have the knowledge that is required to carry out the shoots. I heavily cooperate with gaffers on shoots as a DOP for a reason - it is a leadership position and carries a heavy backload to make the shoot pop.
You're absolutely tops when it comes to your breakdowns. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
That was fantastic, pure knowledge - expertise and talent put together in such a short video. Thanks.
I cannot thank you enough. I love how you are trying to bring others up to speed and capable.
Thank you Andrew. This is amazing. I am so grateful. I also did appreciate the other episodes on Aputure products. So detailed on every things. Many thanks for your time. Patrick

Love your video's, without a doubt the best content around gaffing online. Thanks, learning a lot!
I am a young guy trying to learn lighting and your videos are way better because i am able to see what fixtures you are using. Not like the aputure channel where i can only see aputure fixtures all over the place, i would like to see more HMI, Dedolights, kinos, and other brands on real world scenario like this. Really appreciate it! Please make more like this!
Thank you for sharing this. Very helpful content. I really like that blue-magenta background. :)
Amazing. This has blown my mind the level of detail involved in lighting!
Gaffers are definitely an artists. No doubt in that.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge Andrew. This is invaluable information for us aspiring Cinematographers and Gaffers.

this is a fantastic channel! thanks for sharing so generously your knowledge.
Well done, thank you for sharing your work. Beautiful piece.
Thank you so much for sharing what you do and your knowledge.
You’ve area of production so very interesting. Love it.
Thanks for sharing. And thanks Rod Pollard / the agency and / or client for their approval to show these assets and bts content. Of course lovely work to all, the quality of the night vision goes without saying, but I also especially loooove the specular highlights, polish and texture in the daytime product shot!! I think that's my favourite.
Spending a tonne of time learning how to controlling light, and / or incorporating lighting / gripping professionals into your budget is always going to drastically improve the quality of your work!
I've loved and learned from every video you have posted (the tip about orienting gels and diffusion on barn doors to allow heat to escape has never to my knowledge been offered anywhere else) since you began this outstanding channel, but this one was extra special as it made explicit the craft and care invested in what you - with typical understatement - describe as 'a very basic shoot'. If I could create something with one tenth the quality I would be made up! You sir are a born teacher and the wonderful largesse with which you and others (like Luke Serveld) share your incredible wealth of knowledge is quite simply marvellous. A thousand thanks - I will be making your channel required viewing for my students next academic year.
You are the best. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, experience, and precise technical reviews of equipment in our field.
This is such a great video, awesome content and set breakdown, thanks so much for sharing all this! Great job on the lighting too

I was really impressed with the technical details shared for setting up lighting for a video set. I am new to this as I mainly work in photography I can see how I might be able to use this knowledge in the future using my DSLR and COB LED's and strip lights... Thank you again for sharing.

Great Job, like you said people on this level of production knows these tips and tricks, but it gives inspiration and education to those wanting to up their game! Thank you! Keep them coming I subscribed and will watch every video you have!
Learned a ton. Thanks a lot. One day I would like to be a Gaffer, and videos like this have really helped me.
It must be so hard starting now.
Ive watched this before but it popped back up and you do such a good job I sat through it again. The best part about watching twice.. I noticed on your diagram you called them FLOOPIES! lol. Great job as always and appreciate all the content you put out with a practical, on-set mindset of a professional.
