Redesigning The Miami Grand Prix Circuit

  • The Miami Grand Prix sucks. We all know it. And it's ironic that the race with the most over-the-top show off-track, is the worst race on-track. So let's fix it.
    There are three features a track needs to have to be good for racing F1 cars, and we'll use those to create a much better layout whilst still being within the realistic confines of the car park that the track is built on.

      Safety car aside, the race was only good this year because cars were actually very close in performance which is not how F1 usually is (not to the degree we are seeing this year at least) hence why there were overtakes. But I agree it wasn’t terrible this year - it was a solid race.
      I think there’s an element of recency bias here though. It’s still a bad race track - it’s had 1 “good” race in 3 events. We still need to give it time to conclusively say yes or no.
      I by no means want any race to fail - I want all tracks to be successful but the characteristics just don’t quite seem to be clicking at the moment. Let’s give it a few more chances before we decide 🙌🏼

    I feel like a lot of European F1 fans don't understand the struggle of having 2/3 of the calendar be at unwatchable times. Replacing Miami with like Germany does nothing but make the sport even less accessible to watch here and F1's next big step they're taking is trying to grow in North America. Having these NA tracks is necessary, but improving them is where priorities should lie.

      Well, firstly it's a global sport, so if USA tracks are getting in the way of Sepang, Kyalami, France and Germany (the latter 2 having huge influence in car history), than yes, they should be cut to one.
      But, considering we keep 2 US races: why Miami and Las Vegas? They provided good races last time, but overall have a shitty layout and aren't technical. We could go to Sebring, Daytona, Watkins Glen, Road America or Indianapolis, that are far more competitive tracks, made for racing, not ticket sells

    4:47, i see what you're talking about and why you 're talking about it with the widening of the corner, tho if cars are coming into that corner faster (due to the little straight you put before) a significantly big runoff area has to be constructed, and you'll have to take into account the space for that, too

    • @jakemorganGP
      @jakemorganGP  Před 22 dny

      100%. And they do have the space for it. Just gotta move the barriers back the same amount as the track is extended to ensure it meets the FIA Grade 1 Certification

  • @b29ak2007
    @b29ak2007 Před 21 dnem +2

    Not the worst redesign I have ever seen online, leaving the first corner as is but tightening it could achieve what it does atm as a braking overtaking zone
    Beyond that, making the radius of the corners generally go from larger to smaller might also help turn the continual corners where nothing happens, into spots where the drivers skill and placement can create variability, which in turn creates opportunities for overtakes

  • @sp-syn
    @sp-syn Před 23 dny +5

    In fairness, Miami is a street race. They can only do so much at the location they chose. They can make the track wider, but it is on main streets for traffic as well. It is like complaining about Monaco and saying it is not good racing, which is not so when is that video. If you want a new track, then it can't be at the hardrock stadium, which is the only reason there is a race in Miami. Is it too many in the us, maybe, but no one says that about the two in Italy. Plus, it is actually quite a good track in games, but that is cause more risk can be taken.

    • @jakemorganGP
      @jakemorganGP  Před 23 dny +1

      I understand your points but actually a lot of it is on a car park which has the run off painted over the grid lines. I made sure to only change those parts of the track so that it would be realistically feasible to make the changes.
      But I agree that they need to change the location of the Grand Prix 🤣

    The problem is the can mostly drive one line around maimi. So fixing the track won't do much. They need 1) let more cars race aeound this track for more rubber and grip or 2) make it that the track is less "green."

    Great video! I honestly think turn 1-3 is fine. Could be a bit more open and flowing but it provides overtaking. Biggest change is I would make a monza style parabolica turn to replace the horrible turn 7 and 8. I partially agree with you on the back straight as i hate that area with the long right. I think that left-right chicane needs to be later so to promote more speed. and then i would keep the last chicane before the back straight but make the following left hander more flowing and open so as to promote more speed down the back straight.

    • @jakemorganGP

State and federal highways/interstates are very strict with what can be placed and how far it is from the road making the widening really hard and the reason it’s very narrow at that part of the track. Also the it will be a crap ton of money because of the landscaping of the grass, (most of the parking lot is grass and not asphalt.

  • @William_Snowden
    @William_Snowden Před 23 dny

    I don't think your changes in the braking zones help at all, there are now no very hard braking zones in the corners you changed. Also for turn 1 I wouldn't change the corner of turn 1 but I would get rid of turn 2 and 3 and straight line that bit so it makes it easier to undercut the driver who is defending when the driver on the outside wants to cut back for a better exit. I think the "S" section is good, even if you make it wider there, there is no chance the guy behind would really give it a go on the outside there as there is too much risk of being squeezed out or getting a massive snap of oversteer. For the other section i diagree with your changes as your braking zone is not long enough to do anything it would just be single file and no chance of out braking anyone. What i would do there, would be to keep the braking zone maybe but the kerb on turn 11 a bit narrower so there is more chance for dive bombs, keep the weird long right turn but then straight line the section under the motorway which would allow the cars to keep closer together for the back straight. I think these changes would create better racing.
    This is my proposition.
    Anyway I like your thinking but practically it would probably make the racing worse as you got rid of most of the demanding braking zones.

    • @jakemorganGP
      @jakemorganGP  Před 23 dny +1

      I removed one slow corner sequence (1-3) and kept the other two essentially, so I havent got rid of heavy braking zones really.
      If we think about Abu Dhabi’s turn 9, it promotes great overtakes side-by-side and I think that this would be the same thing hence why I went for Turn 1 being that. 2/3 is just awful for racing so I wanted to get rid of it.
      And there’s still two heavy braking zones with the Monza-style corner and then the usual turn 11.
      As for the s-section it’s always tricky and you make a good point but it’s about enabling drivers and I think this would encourage it slightly more than they currently look to do.
      I like your idea about making the kerb narrower on turn 11 though - that would definitely encourage making moves there 🙌🏼🙌🏼

      @@Warren12 sorry but both the races and the circuits of Germany we raced on are way better than those of the USA, F1 should focus more on the history than on money. Besides, there is a race in Austin which is good enough.

    I can't decide if this video was a joke or you actually took it seriously?
    You made the whole first sector to be flat out basically, you ruined the overtaking opportunities. Like wtf?? Miami is already good for racing. There are circuits that are way less good. Look at the 2024 gp aswell, you could see, there were tonns of battles

    • @jakemorganGP
      @jakemorganGP  Před 22 dny

      I’m being serious about the track layout. Any circuit can give us a subjectively good race but the track isn’t good at all.
      My new turn 1 is not flat and would be a better overtaking opportunity than it currently is. Think of all the amazing overtakes we’ve had at Abu Dhabi’s turn 9 or Qatar turn 1 - in what way are those corners flat 😂
      The 2024 race was good for two reasons:
      1) the safety car (which meant mixed strategies)
      2) the cars are ultra close this year (which is unusual for F1)
      I stand by the fact that the track is not a good layout - we got 1 good race of 3 so far. Next year will probs be good but 2026 I don’t see it happening

    I hate to say it, but this solved nothing. The first turn being a sweeper destroys the point of a first turn, a slower corner where initial moves can be completed. The Monza chicane is simply awful, as the Monza chicane is. Straightlining the original chicane works. I do suppose the wider track works. But those first two changes I mentioned improved nothing and actually seemed to have made the circuit worse.

    Honestly, just leave Miami. There is no need to have three Grands Prix here in the United States. (I could argue that F1 could just stop racing in the United States altogether [especially depending on what happens in our presidential election in November, for reasons similar to fans arguing that F1 shouldn't be in Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, or Bahrain {then again, I'm a trans woman, and the way the states of Texas and Florida have been attacking trans rights makes them undeserving imo of a Grand Prix}]). Sorry if I've gotten too political, I'll get off my soapbox.
