Fun fact - when I was 10, me and my dad were at this race, and we stayed through to the very end. We had no idea what was going on until we got back to the hotel afterwards and found out online. Younger me was a Ferrari fangirl, so she didn't mind it too much :P Also holy crap there was so many beer cans thrown on track. If you watch carefully, one of the Ferraris actually hit one halfway into the race.
well you had pretty much the whole race track to yourself
Ya I’ve watched the race recently, it was a plastic water bottle, Barrichello ran over it
He's talking about Indianapolis 2005.
But maybe you should actually take a look at Monaco 1996. Because that one was really special.
IMS had started their own box lunch program (Sandwich, chicken, chips and cookie) for $8 more you could get 2 oil cans(32 oz. ea.) of Foster's Lager. So there were hundreds of thousands of these weighty beers, and dozens and dozens were thrown at the Ferraris from outside the catch fence. We were in turn 1 (Stand H) and it was as close to a riot as I've ever been near. We left after 10 laps. Haven't been to an F1 race since, but the first 5 were great fun!
That wasn't Patrick Friesacher in the 2nd Minardi, it was Robert Doornbos.

Belgium 2021: Hold my wheat beer
It didn’t rain a lot, but it drizzled constantly and the cars throwing up spray meant visibility was still be zero and would be unsafe. They should have brought out the services vehicles to clear the water much sooner than when they did, but 2005:looked like even more of a farce when there was anticipation of a proper race. When all the spectators and teams rooked up on race day at Spa and the race start postponed several times in the first hour, it should have been in the back of some people’s minds that the race wouldn’t happen properly.
Yas Marina: this is a banquet!
Spa was a good decision, I don't want to see F1 drivers die.

Blaming Ferrari for refusing the use of a chicane when the FIA made specific rules to bring them down seems kinda odd to me
Agreed. Ferrari was punished for being too successful the previous year...then, when they're having a bad year, they are supposed to agree to be effectively punished again? I don't think so. The fault lies entirely with Michelin. Regardless of their lack of data, it's up to the company to supply a product that is fit for purpose - and if they aren't sure of the parameters, they should over-engineer them so they at least hold together.
@@aussiebloke609 especially when Michelin did the same thing to them in Spain in the same season where Bridgestone brought an unsafe tyre yet Michelin and those teams refused to compromise
Indeed. There were new tire rules specifically designed to penalize Ferrari and Bridgestone, and when it turned out they still had the better tires at one race, they should give up the advantage in that race too? Maybe Michelin should have let their teams use Bridgestone tires for the race - that would have been an advertising coup for Bridgestone!

I don't think you can blame Ferrari. I mean the rules creating this mess where only implied to make Ferrari lose. So why bow down if this is your only chance of winning?
You probably could if not for the aftermath where it was found out that had they put a chicane in the FIA, they would have been sued by the state of Indiana, so all's well that ends well (kinda)
@peter pan so fair that it was repealed the following year. So fair that it was announced when the cars for 2005 were almost ready so it was impossible to make up for this change. And besides, everyone knew for quite a long time that the Michelins were harder than the Bridgestones and would have had no problem to go the full distance. The FIA saw it and said “guess what, enough with ferrari winning, let’s also give the others a chance”.
They were offered this option plus one where the non bridgestone runners would receive no points. They screwed the fans simple as.
It's because the bedwetters at WTF1 don't like Ferrari and blame them for everything they can.
Exactly what I was going to say. 2005 was the season specifically aimed at cutting the Ferrari domination for the last 5 years. Imagine FIA doing this to Mercedes nowadays.
Well, as a Ferrari fan, you can justify the veto by blaming the FIA for bringing the no tyre change rule. I don’t see anyone doing this to the Mercedes juggernaut now.
Exactly
Bono, His tyres are ded
Let's just say it
Well it’s because they saw that sticking to regulations is best and not directly influencing the means to the ends.

The whole one set of tyres rule was an absolute joke, just to stop Ferrari winning so when the Michelin runners started having troubles in Indy after having troubles all season Ferrari's attitude of "why should go along with what you guys want?" is understandable in my opinion. I've been waiting for the FIA to come up with a similarly stupid rule to stop Merc in recent times

I think Indianapolis 2005 is now challenged by Hungary 2021 to be the craziest race ever
I couldn't imagine what some people would've felt if they canceled the race. If I had saved enough money to buy a ticket, fly to indy, and pay for a hotel just for the race to get canceled or postponed, I'd be so upset. Then again, doing all that and expecting the full 20 cars and only getting 6 would maybe be even worse?
Usually tickets would be refunded and travel costs reimbursed.
Edit: Actually I'm not so sure about the travel costs now. I remember they reimbursed the travel costs in one of the races but I can't find it anymore.
As a portuguese Tiago Monteiro fan, this race was hella hype. I'll never forget it.

I was there for that race. It was definitely a bizarre day. Watching nearly all the cars go to the pits after the start, there had been rumors that it might happen, but we didn't really expect they would.
I thought the chicane had been excluded because every corner needs to be properly tested for safety in advance.
@Some Guy they would have run the race as a non championship event if the chicane was installed. Chain Bear has an awesome video about this race.
@@W123KartSport the fia did threaten to remove all of it's officials if a chicame was built, though. Im not sure they could have had any race, championship or not, without any of the people who actually run the event being there

Anyone in the know saw that Michelin cars had no chance of racing unless major changes were made.
@@W123KartSport and them being ready to race regardless of the FIA pulling out is why the FIA upped the threats.
This is correct. They were also afraid because the state of Indiana has a law that you could sue someone/organization for reckless endangerment
Lewis Hamilton 2021: Hold my beer
You didn't say that the chicane idea was actually not going ahead anyway, becaude the circuit needed rehomologation even for such a small change
Even if the circuit needed to be rehomologated for the extra chicane, the chicane seems like a reasonable choice. Either that or postponing the race altogether.
@@EpicB re-homologation can't happen overnight. It was never a real possibility except if the race was held as a non championship race.
That would never of happened either, because if one driver crashed due to tyre failure, the team, and anyone else in charge of the event could have been prosecuted by Indiana for endangering the driver.
@@launchsquid In that case maybe they shot have just called it off.
But the circuit without the chicane was already unsafe for most of the teams
But even if it was possible, it would be extremely unfair to Ferrari. Ferrari had basically lost an entire season due to that one tyre set rule, so why should they let others snatch their win away after using the right tyre set? Rules are made for everyone. If Ferrari had to obey those rules, so would the Michelin teams.
I was there too. There were rumours of the pullout before the race but didn’t know what was gonna happen even minutes until the start.
We got a refund check for the tickets from Michelin a year later. Didn’t make up for the hours of driving and hotel.
The Porsche Supercup was exciting though. :)
Belgium 2021: And I took that personally.
“Only 6 cars.” Try one😏
that is what i was about to say
12 -year-old me was there. Still managed to take home some good memories. I randomly met and talked to Christijan Albers' mom at the mall the night before so I had someone paint her son's helmet on my face before the start. Little did I know he would end up in the points in his Minardi. I was also a fan of Michael so both drivers I supported happened to race. Sad to have missed the roar of twenty V10's at the start but I will still never forget the sound of those engines.
That mall was great. I met Fernando Alonso outside the PF Changs.
And now we had a race with only one starting
We were at this race as we had been at every F1 at Indy. Equipped with our scanners, we were privy to team and F1 communications. Early that morning we got the indication that all was not right in Bernie's world. We then started hearing discussions about doing the formation lap. Take the grid, start the race then before completing the 1st lap, pull off into the pit lanes. We waited until it actually happened. We already had our gear packed up ready to go. The Police outside were shocked as thousands of fans stormed out of the track. We didn't drive almost 7 hours to watch a damn parade!
“2005 United States gp, the most bizzare f1 gp in history!”
Meanwhile 2021 Belgian gp: hold my rain
I have watched tens of videos of this US GP. Yet every time a new one pops up, I watch it again.
I hadn't been able to watch qualifying, so the first I knew that something was up was turning on ITV's race buildup and Jim saying "we still don't know if we're going to have a race or not".
One thing that's often overlooked these days is the power struggle that was going on between the FIA and the non-Ferrari manufacturers, who were always going on about forming a breakaway series. I wouldn't be surprised if that had an impact on the FIA being so against the idea of running a non-championship race or letting the teams run a race themselves. If they pulled it off, what was to stop them organising an entire championship on their own?
Not bad for Schumacher moving from fifth to third in the standings 😂😅

What is also bizarre is that after San Marino 1994, FIA still doesn't have a protocol of imeddiately canceling a race if accidents are showing that might be something wrong with the racetrack or equipment. In San Marino they also put into vote many options to increase security on the corner where a pilot had already died, and Senna would die in the next day, and nothing was really done.
Even if ferarri did vote for the chicane idea then it wouldnt have gone ahead anyway because the FIA have to check and validate every corner that is raced around to ensure it is safe. Great video though
Would anyone else enjoy a race with 6 midfield/backmarker cars rather than a usual Hamilton win, Bottas second and verstappen third, or is it just me?
I'd like to watch that.
My first GP and the scariest crowd I've ever been in.
I was at this race and I'll never forget it. Left our seats and just walked around during the race watching the riot police came out as angry fans were starting to get rowdy.
as a Portuguese that was the best race ever, Tiago Monteiro finished at 3rd place and it was the first and still only podium of a Portuguese driver in the history of Formula 1

Lando: "It's Bwoken!"
😂😂 Good one
Honestly, this race was my earliest memory of F1.
I remember as a kid hearing the noises outside my house. It was a thing of beauty
I attended the 2005 USGP. Always at my seat at turn 13. The last before the front straightaway. I got my butt outta there in 2005 when the Colombian fans behind me started throwing bottles and such and couldn’t get out of there fast enough. What a screw up for F1. I did go back the following year because I was offered two free tickets. But in 2004 when Schumacher hit the wall. I was right in the stands about 15 rows up and scared the crap out of me. Luckily for the catch fence keeping the debris from hitting me and my buddy. But I seriously thought Ralf got killed in the crash as it looked like it took forever to get help to him and he wasn’t moving. Scary time
The least worst option would have been to have a chicane, sure Ferrari would have been pissed off but they're still competing on a level playing field against the other cars, the race still happens, fans at the track and home see the race, no one has to mess about with an extra race later in the season.
Record broken by Hamilton at the 2021 Hungarian gp Because he was alone on the grid
Fun fact, I live down the street from IMS and was at this exact race 😂 shit was W I L D
what you also should've said, is that Michelin actually compensated for anyone holding an entry ticket for the 2005 US GP. they offered compensation, a free ticket for the 2006 US GP, and DTM offered free entry to anyone who had a 2005 US GP entry ticket (if angry fans didn't throw them away at the disgrace that was the '05 US GP) and the one tyre set per race rule was lifted after 2005. Michelin stopped supplying F1 tires, and Bridgestone got the full rights to supply the F1 teams until Pirelli came along and got them instead.
also, what I've heard is that the teams actually tried to fill in the FIA roles should the FIA have withdrawn from the US GP. and I've also heard that the idea of the cars just passing through the pit lane every lap didn't come about until AFTER the GP. but, y'know. were only human, and luckily the FIA and Formula 1 have learned from this huge mess of a GP weekend as to not make the same mistake twice
2005 one tyre set rule is ridiculous, and dangerous, as well as do more harm than good. I just hoped for a close title battle, like 2003, with McLaren having the fastest cars, even if it means Ferrari gonna win it anyway. Just gimme another '2003' season for 2005, and that's it.
Speaking of tyre manufacturers, will PIRELLI handle the banked turn like Bridgestone did?
