      It’s also just a huge cost risk. You need to build a venue that can accommodate 200k spectators in the hopes that you maybe get 1 F1 race per year.
      That’s at least 51 weeks of the year when your big circuit is sitting empty or hosting a smaller series that doesn’t bring in nearly as much money.

    Mount Panorama Circuit is one of the most incredible race tracks ever made - it has incredible sweeping corners, hard braking zones, one of the fastest straights in the world (Conrod Straight goes for nearly 2km) and a remarkable elevation change. It would be incredible to see F1 at that track, but it's only Grade 3, because F1 cars would be, basically, too fast for it. It's a pity - Jenson Button did put his McLaren around it at something like 15 seconds under the official lap record in 2011. It would definitely be dangerous, but would certainly be a unique event on the F1 calendar.

    • @carlosbarzottowirti1895
      @carlosbarzottowirti1895 Před 3 lety +1

      I guess the land area a building takes is WAAAAAAY lower than a circuit, with all the accommodations. Add to this the construction process and costs. Laying down asphalt isn't quite cheap either. After the building is done, your costs go down to pratically zero, while the circuit must expend huge amounts of money with personel on a race day. The building maintenance cost is nowhere near comparable to the costs of maintaining a track.
      I think you're optimistic about the 'achievability' of constructing a grade-1 circuit.

    These requirements/standards are not just fair but very necessary for both safety and smooth running of a grand prix weekend. What's unfair are the excessively large fees tracks have to dish out to be able to host an F1 race. Very often, the kind of business the track and its surrounding area makes because of the race does not justify that colossal fee.
