  • 10 Tips to Ease Back Into Exercise Safely After A Long Break
Returning to a new workout routine after a long break can seem. daunting and a bit overwhelming. So here are some of my tips to ease back into a healthy and sustainable routine.
    1. Plan Ahead
Start to think about your current habits, without changing anything. When do you have the most energy? What time of the day are you most likely to be motivated to workout? The best way to get and stay consistent is to do your workouts when you are most likely to feel like doing them. If you hate mornings, don't schedule a morning workout - it will be very hard for you to maintain that routine.
    2. Schedule Your Workouts
Once you have found the best time of the day for you to consistently workout, start thinking about how many times per week you want to commit to working out for your first month. I would suggest scheduling in a 15-30 minute workout 3 times per week to start out. Know that if you are feeling a burst of energy on a rest day, you can always add more, but commit to at least 3 sessions per week.
    3. If Suffering From Health Issues, Check With Your Doctor
Everyone is so beautifully unique- make sure that your health care provider gives you the go ahead, especially if illness, injury, or pregnancy were previously holding you back from exercising. Better safe than sorry!
    4. Find ways to motivate Yourself
This will be different from person to person, but some proven ways are finding an exercise or accountability partner and creating a healthy reward system for yourself.
    5. Prepare With Proper Gear
It is important to note that to start out, you don't need a whole lot of gear, but you may want to invest in a quality sports bra to keep you supported in the more intense workout sessions, and a good pair of sneakers if you prefer to workout with shoes on.
    6. Take Your Time and Change your Routine Slowly
Taking a slow approach to your new routine is the best and most sustainable approach. It can be tempting to go all in in an attempt to erase all the inactivity, but a slow and steady approach will take you much further. There is such a thing as a binge and restrict cycle with exercising. If you go too hard, you won't want to keep going due to soreness and possible injury.
    7. Think Positively
There is no greater asset than a positive mindset expecially when just starting out. Stay positive and keep positive people around you. This is how you will stay consistent. Challenge yourself to only say good things about your body, no matter how you feel about it
    8. Set Some Goals and Manage Your Expectations
Your goals need to be S.M.A.R.T. Sustainable, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. Don't just say "I want to lose ___ lbs", That's only measurable. Make a time frame, make sure its realistic, and remember that good things take time. Try your best to make your goals less about weight loss and more about how you feel. That translates a lot better into your lifestyle. Example: "I want to feel more energetic by the time its my toddlers birthday so I can keep up with the kids and enjoy the party with them"
    9. Cool Down & Stretch After Your Workouts
To avoid injury and reduce soreness after your workouts, make sure to cool down and stretch after EVERY workout. It is very important, and will set you up for an even better workout the next time you do!
    10. Make Note of Your Reason And Redefine What Exercise Means To You
Your understanding of exercise can change; it can be something you enjoy and even look forward to. Challenge yourself to redefine what exercise means to you; how its helping you, and why you are committing to it. Having a why will keep you on the straight and narrow when you want to give up.
You've got this, and I'm proud of you for taking this first step

I recently had to take about 2 weeks off of my regular fitness routine due to health reasons, and to end that break, when my sister visited I drank lots and lots of wine (haha- no shame, it was amazing). So I know how challenging and discouraging it can feel to hop back into a fitness routine especially after being so consistent before. Give yourself grace, take a breath, read the 10 tips I left for you in the description, and go for it. I know that you've got this babe. @@francine8536 thank you so much, and not at all! So I literally ate whatever I wanted but in smaller portions, I also tried not to go back for seconds and actually listened to my body when I was full. In the past I would eat every last bit on my plate even if I was really stuffed. I used to go to mcdonald’s a lot for quick meals, I believe that’s where a lot of my weight gain came from so I did quit eating fast food and instead made my own meals or got these meals called “healthy choice” from the grocery store. What helped a lot for me is to not eat over my calorie limit and to start eating dinner at least 3 hours before bed. If I get hungry after dinner I usually just eat a light snack. For example, non butter popcorn, saltine crackers, or fruit, and if I was craving chocolate (which is often lol) I choose this brand call “atkins” its waaay better for you then regular chocolate. I do sometimes crave fast food and I let myself have what i’m craving every once in awhile, but once again it’s all about the portion size. Instead of me getting a big mac meal with a large fry and a milkshake, I just get a cheeseburger with a small fry or either a side salad. I never was a big fan of soda’s, juice, and things like that so it wasn’t hard to quit on that stuff. Water is my go to drink for sure!🙂

I haven't had a workout routine in like 3 or 4 years but I walk everywhere always. I did this routine to get back into my fitness and body-ody (i've been promising myself all year; better late than never) and it was great. Not hard, not easy. Very mild. It made me look forward to tomorrow's workout and how intense it will be. I feel great, thank you!!

I did this routine this morning 01/20/23. First time doing any of her workout routines and working out in a very, very long time. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. The pace was just right for someone starting again. Loved the fact that she puts the next move up. It allowed me to physically and mentally prepare for the next move. I also appreciated the personal touches that she put into the video meant to encourage her viewers. I will do this for the next couple of weeks and then choose another one. Thank you so much for the videos.

I needed this and I am so happy I took the time out of my day to do it because I feel so much better. I recently hurt my low back/butt sciatica area and with a busy life and being in pain needing to rest, I hadn’t worked out for about a month. Going from consistently working out since August of 2022 to a dead halt really impacted my mental health as this was a fairly new routine I have established and that I really love and enjoy. I had Low energy levels, eating a bunch of sugary and fast foods and I was feeling my worst again as if I had undone all of my hard work but after taking some time to myself and giving myself grace and the time to heal and get back onto my better eating habits I am feeling much better and these workouts really have helped me so much. Thank you Jo for always working so hard and being strong not just for others and this community but yourself and your family. You’ve been a huge inspiration to so many including myself.

I used to be a gym fanatic 8 years ago, that was until i ended up having 3 hernia operations, myofacial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia. Went back gym for a month back in march and that's all it lasted as was doing an hour exercise as well as a 40 minute walk to and from the gym, 3 times a week (plus 4 walks a day with the dog) it all got to much for my body to handle. My mate told me to try out this video of yours and am so glad she did, gave it a go for the first time tonight and i feel refreshed and relaxed from doing the full 20 minutes. Even my pain management consultant, has said to me to do between 15-30 minutes of exercise a day as well as my short walks with my dog. I have a good feeling that this is the one that will finally get me back into shape, without over doing it on my body. Thank you Jo 💖

    @Misteddreams Před 2 lety +1

I've been following your amazing channel for a while now Jo, but this is the first time I have decided to comment on my progress, specifically with regards to this particular video. I started the year off wonderfully, as many of us do, even finding a friend eager and willing to be an accountability partner for exercise twice a week - but after a bout of illness and major stresses at work, I slowly began to deplete in the ways of motivation, physical energy and the mental capacity to keep up with the workouts. Eventually, I stopped all together. It has been four to five months since my last committed workout, and I am excited (and relieved) to say that this is the second time in a week I have successfully completed this session despite my fears and doubts.
To anyone afraid that this is difficult and unmanageable: I can assure you that Jo has only our best interests in mind and heart when she creates a routine like this. The most I could ever handle at peak fitness a few months ago was an intense 10 minutes; no more. But I could get through this, albeit pushing with all my might towards the end (especially with the "finisher" move) - and it didn't knock the air out of my lungs to the point of wanting to faint (which has happened to me many a time before when overdoing it!)
Jo's workouts are incredibly flexible; if the moves are too fast, slow them down and focus on completing the motion with intentionality by engaging the muscles you feel are working.
I even took tiny sips of water during some of the walking "breaks", and that helped me push through to the end.
The goal is not to execute everything perfectly but to try your best to keep moving with purpose and, yes, focusing on the movements, but more than anything learning to enjoy exercise and the fruits of your efforts! I feel the best that I have since the beginning of the year and have had the added, unexpected benefits of better sleep and even more stamina at work (I am on my feet for at least 8-10 hours a day, yet I am able to return home and still be eager to tune in to Jo's channel!)
So in conclusion, be glad for any and all progress - what you do now is the starting point, and can only fold over into habits and a healthier lifestyle from here. And though it may be tempting not to, try to leave a day or two in between so as to allow your body to recover - I myself had four days between these two sessions, as I felt that is what I could handle and I am better for it now as my aching muscles have restored themselves, ready and prepared for all I have to ask of them!
Jesus loves you all and wants you to know that there is hope in the gift of eternal life that He brings through believing in Him, and what His sacrifice did for us. 🤍 Your health and wellbeing is part of learning to care for the whole body, mind and soul that He gave you so be at ease. You have done well.
Thank you again Jo for the encouragement and accessibility to fitness that I had not seen on this platform until now. You are involved in a greater purpose of improving and transforming people's lives. God bless. Xx

And did I work up a sweat, even though it's a cold rainy day here. I really love your energy and the no talking music workout feels great too since I'm a fan of zumba/dance type workouts. And the entire time, I kept moving ! I hope this time I can stick to my fitness journey with no issues/injury. Thanks a bunch. Much love from India ❤️

Aww I loved your work out! I'm here after almost eating a whole family sized bag of flaming hot kettle cooked chips with lemon.

I had a baby 3 years ago and its as if I never lost the pregnancy weight. I am now a single mom and hard to find time to workout. I have cried myself to sleep because I can't keep up with my 3 year old. Today I said I was going to start doing something about it. I wanted a workout that wasn't too intense but would make me sweat and this video was perfect. The exercises, the length, the motivation was perfect. It's 10:47pm and I just finished my first workout in 3 years. I amd looking forward to working out with more of your videos. Thank you !!!

Loved this workout Jo! Trying to get back to moving after a couple of years of giving up when everything I did caused pain. Did not think I would sweat on this but I did. Shows how much I needed this. I love not having drill sargent style commands yelled at me and that you can convey your energy without doing that. Also love how real you are. Hoping this will not flare my cranky back and leg and that you are my new way back to better health. Thank you.

Just what I needed after a month off (LOTS of things going on in my life) - got the heart rate up, but didn't throw me off balance or leave me discouraged. Thank you for posting this!

After a week off due to caring for my sick family (and now being sick myself!) I am back at my first workout with Jo again! Thank you for the energy boost and hopefully the increased bloodflow will help me recover quickly! And sleep better while resting too ;)

8 months postpartum… haven’t worked out in almost 2 years and I was dreading getting back in to it because it’s been a very long break, but this was a nice way to break that ice and get back into the groove. My legs were shaking walking up my stairs so thanks Jo! Here’s to a new body after baby 😬
