I believe the dyeing with TransTint with Alcohol solvent gives the hobbyist or start up without the high end professional paint booth a nice looking finish. Especially if you don't have Chris or Matt's spray skills. Mix it in with sanding sealer and finish with a 2 part high gloss on top will make project guitar a piece to be proud of and Texas Toast can set itself apart from competitors with eye catching finishes.
Lots of good ways to go, we are going to do more videos with Trans-Tint in the coming weeks
Gotta love a little trans-tint, especially after the finish coat is applied. Cool new colors.
It's the good stuff kids go for
Coincidentally, I had just ordered Transtint "Perfect Red" to attempt to duplicate an old 50's Les Paul TV (two P90's) that I used to play. Not done yet, but I think your comment about 'old Gibson' is correct. Perfect Red is on the cooler side, while their regular "Bright Red" (also available as a StewMac color) is just a bit more on the orange side.
I've been worried about the ratio (with alcohol) being too high or low, so your video was helpful for the meticulously measured mix ratios. :-) Just kidding. But I could tell a lot from the mixing stiick. I imagine there's some hit or miss in doing the stain too dark or light, so I'm trying to gauge that.
Sweet, I'm digging the red and aqua
Lots of cool colors, right
"Violet...you're turning violet, Violet". Absolutely love Transtint.
it's the good stuff kids go for
Very cool. I used rit dyes on a project guitar that came out awesome.
Cool man, glad to hear you had success
These colors remind me of working with Keda Dye I found on you tube. You have to put a few coats on them and then once you put that clear over it? BAM! Knocks your socks off!
Totally
I've been wanting to try trans tint, thanks for the video
It's pretty cool man
I used trans tint on a Tele build. I used green and mixed in a little yellow to get it the perfect shade.
Good stuff, right
The purple looks great!!
Thanks Russ
Matt send the purple strat my way. I love to build it. Nice
Wow! I like that aqua color.
I know right?
Wait till you see this thing all sorted out. It's going to be super cool
Thanks for sealer over shielding pro tip! I was curious about that. But because my factory only cranks out about one guitar a year I don't tend to do the funsies experiments.
Give it a try man you will like it.
Damn! I love that Aqua blue... or green... or whatever.... Aqua
What about the red color on the old EBO bass? That would be cool... I think :)
The red would look awesome on the EBO bass !!
I need to revisit the EBO soon
I love the aqua...very cool
It's cool right
looks good
some great stains/dye
Thanks Richard we did the sealer coats today and they are really sweet
Very cool, I have used the dyes from Crimson Guitars but they are in the UK so shipping a duty are a pain, I will give this stuff a shot next time…especially that red….gives me ideas !!
It's the good stuff man and Jeff is a cool dude
I have always used water with my dyes.. This will be cool to see.. People will try crazy things on their guitars.. I once did a real abalone inlay on a fret board.. you have to cut the shell under water because of the dust.. It looked real good...PS the only place I found shells back 10 yrs ago was good will.. Soap Dishes from the 70's..Otherwise you can only find the premade sheet..I made the guitar from 100 yr old mahogany from a fireplace mantle from a cabin in colorado..The customer brought me the wood..
Sounds neat
Hey Matt & Chris - did you ever do the follow-up to this where you spray a teal shader coat? I'd really like to see how that turned out. Thanks for all your good work.
Coming soon!
I like that red. Dye authentic.
HAHAHAHA nice
I normally use aniline dyes, but this stuff looks almost as intense. I may give it a try.
Give it a whirl, it is okay directly onto wood but really pops in color blender. More videos coming soon
I used to use that kinda alcohol to clean parts. It left less stuff than rubbing alcohol
Oh cool, that is good to know
I'm usually not a bass guy, but I can't wait to see how that "Kooky" aqua one turns out!
That is a guitar brotherman
@@TexasToastGuitars Lol I just watched the video again, sure enough those are humbucker routes. Whoosh, right over my head!
Cool stuff!👍😎🎸🎶
Thanks brotherman
@@TexasToastGuitars yup!☺
I knew Chris was gonna say Aqua. awesome surf minds think alike.
Oh you wait, more on this cool color coming soon
I love the red. Very cool. Question: What causes the dark and light spots and how do you fix it? Thnx Matt.
As you know wood isn't exactly homogenous and soft spots sometimes soak up more. You just have to let it dry and add more.
Some woods just don't take stain very well. The next video will show you how to sort it out on those woods
@@TexasToastGuitars have you made this video yet? thank you!
Purple looks 👍
Wait until you see it next time
Can't wait! Purple kool aid here we go! Yes!
Cool Acqua!!!
Thanks amigo
Looks cool we can't get trans tint here in U.K - can get keda dyes tho,, I wonder why they won't ship here?? Any ideas??
Must be a HazMat thing?
what is the correct applicator material for staining ? paper towels I think that is a no no
only clean white fabric for me
Do a segment on Gibson's pour fill staining process what product do they use with there stains??
You got to use what you like brotherman, in the next video you will see how we prefer to do dye colors
Ash is a tough wood to get to soak up the stain. See how the Mahogany really grabbed the red? If you had used that purple or any of them on some maple or anything besides ash or Limba, etc, they would have been way more vibrant.
I like the way ash takes dye, but in the next video we will show you the really hot set up
Aqua rules as a guitar colour, nice post 😎🎙🎸✅
Thanks Julian
Uhh Yeahh - That red on the mahogany looks really really like ...... The turquoise (sorry Aqua) looks really nice too.
Thanks man, we will be doing a few more videos about the Trans-Tint dyes
Love the content ... btw ... what’s the status of the resto-mod?
I think you will see that in the coming weeks
What's your opinion on shielding paint vs shielding tape? I think the tape looks cooler but it'll be covered up anyway. I'm not too sure if the results would be radically different.
I think the copper tape gives you a more reliable and definitely more conductive result and it doesn't come off all over your fingers. Whether or not the fairly high resistance paint shields as well is debatable. I suspect it may not. Both tape and paint MUST be connected to the guitar circuit ground. Different areas of tape should be connected together, which may need a solder dab on the top surface. Some of the more expensive tape products do claim to have conductive glue, but there are too many videos on CZcams showing someone covering the inside of a guitar and not connecting tape together, or to ground. I use cheap slug repellent copper tape sold at garden centres.
I think tape sucks
Can you do a sanding sealer before you put the color on?
Not very effective, no wood penetration.
@@ericsfc1ea.16 yeah, I wasn't sure. I've never used dyes. I know that sealers help prevent blotches when using regular stains
You sure can Tom and it is our preferred method. Stay tuned we are doing one on just this later this week
I use transtint on furniture and if sprayed on then i put sanding sealer first. It’s made to keep it from splotching.
You mentioned mahogany, but did you mention what kind of wood were the guitars?
mahogany
I buy this garlic bread at my grocery store they call is 'Texas Toast'
Good to know
Hello I bought the trans tint to do my tele project is it really that bad they want you to wear something over your mouth so far all that I saw using it wasn't wearing anything over their mouth I would think using a few drops would be that bad thanks
Well, I'm certainly not going to to disregard any safety precautions. Only you can decide if it worth it
@@TexasToastGuitars ok thank you have a good one
Thats Purple Haze
Remember when Winger did that song
Doesn't Gibson use a black pore filler on top of mahogany before staining red?
Oh man, beats me?
Great video Matt. Try using Aceton to dilute. It evaporates more slowly. I also went the wood with the carrier before the dye stain to help prevent the blotching
We normally don't apply directly to wood
@@TexasToastGuitars what do you normally apply it to? I thought this demo was about dying wood
Matt needs a brew!
I had one after we filmed this :)
Anyone know what he means by stew mac having the "old stuff"?
The existing range of colours before the addition of these 'new' tints.
Yeah, I should have said "Classic" colors of course, they are still available. Sorry for the confusion Chad
Chris is a regular Chatty Cathy today.
Yeah, he was playing his card close to his vest today
I have all the alcohol's denatured is for staining so yeah Beer is for drankin, rubbin alcohol is for cleaner and prep,, great video
I don't know why I didn't use the fuel stuff in the metal gallon before
I find it spreads MUCH more evenly if you dilute with water versus alcohol. You won't get those blotchy spots
yeah I've used transtints with water. What's the advantage of using alcohol?
@@bevinmodrak4997 it dries almost immediately because of the rapid evaporation rate of alcohol....but that's what causes the botchiness because it's not "wet" long enough to blend in those areas
Bevin Modrak does the water raise the grain?
@@jimhibert even the tint will raise the grain a little. Best to do a grain raise 1st and then a light sand back before tinting.
Live how you want to live
Should u put grain filler before
If you use grain filler... Yes
