      @TryNDoxMe Thank you! My father did teach me a lot about home maintenance and repair, including some plumbing. I also was an assistant when I was young, to a plumber friend for several months while he searched for a good replacement for the one who had left. Learned a lot. Despite my knowledge and caution, I did have two water related tragedies at home. One was a flood due to massive rapid snow melt, the other was the carelessness of a friend who, when I was a way, decided to adjust my thermostat during a severe cold snap and high winds. Because of his unfamiliarity with my system, he wound up turning my system OFF! Long story short, the house was destroyed. Insurance didn't cover enough, even though I had a good policy (should've had a lawyer). Left me financially hobbled and permanently hyper aware.

    • @kele1264
      @kele1264 Před rokem

      @TryNDoxMe This is going to sound a bit rude, but trust: If you want to own a home, you've got to do tons of research - about homeownership and yourself. I wish we could sit around a dinner table and discuss it. I don't know what you know or don't know. What I can tell you is that at your age, you may have a hard time getting a mortgage. That's right, age discrimination. Don't give up if ownership is what you want! These are rhetorical questions for you: do you have an excellent credit rating? Do you have sizable savings? Have you ever taken care of a home from top to bottom to outside? Do you have any idea where you want to live, house type, land size? Have you ever had a real estate agent take you around? To tons of houses? Do you have any idea what size mortgage you can afford? Have you considered every single utility bill that you'll probably pay? Property taxes? Homeowners Insurance? Trusted friend or family member to care for it when you're not there? What services do you wish to be near (veterinarian, hospital, college). What do you not want to be near (businesses, main roads, primary schools). Do you want to be in an "over 55" community? You DON'T want to be in an HOA, trust me. They're not always easy to spot, even though you're supposed to be told. You DO want of-street parking (big driveway), probably also a garage. You probably want city water, sewer, and gas. Don't be near a landfill, an airport, an oil refinery, a sewer plant, manufacturing, nuclear facility, Superfund site. Check the local zoning - what's been approved, what is scheduled for a hearing? There is so darn much. I'm not trying to discourage you - more like start you on your journey of preparing for it. Can you tell I'm a worrier? I could list considerations for hours. I'm gonna stop now. I've wound myself up with worry for you. Ask your home owning friends what they dislike most about homeownership, where they are located, what they would do if they could do it over again. Take a real estate law class and a property class at a community college near you - in their ABA approved Paralegal program (that matters). Please don't let me scare you - I've been a homeowner since I was 25. Lots of good and bad. But I'll always choose ownership over renting.

    We've been prepping for a very long time. A few weeks ago I pulled out a 5 gallon bucket of pinto beans. These were just in a food safe bucket. No mylar bag. No special treatment. No moisture absorber. Just beans in a bucket with a tight fitting snap on lid. We felt like experimenting, so we cooked up a batch of beans and ate them with dinner. They were GREAT! You would have never guessed these beans were/are 15 years old! It does not have to be difficult, people.

Rather than throw them away, I started eating some- the pasta and rice were 3 years past the expiry and tasted fine. Equally, I've eaten various tins 3 or 4 years past the expiry with no problems at all. Obviously, if a tin is damaged or smells bad when you open it then you would use common sense and throw it away.

      the findings but suddnly the ones already punlished still available but every new finding is now under pasword protection with warnings to those with access that they are now secret punishable by stated penality i dont remember what the penality is but its felony theses drugs bought and paid for by taxpayers, who pay fda and military trillions but were not allowed to know what drug we own that could last longer so we save money

    A lot of people probably won't think to do this, but if you take paper and soak it in water, then you can press it into bricks that when dry, will burn like great firewood wood. Old newspapers are great for this. Great if you have a wood stove. It's essentially how they make wood pellets.
    I made a peltier USB battery charger from a couple of old cooking pots and PC CPU coolers. I just fill the bottom pot with water and boil it with whatever heat source I have and then I can add water or snow in the upper pot to provide temperature difference. It works great, but in that process it also dawned on me that if I did this with a big pot, then I could actually fill it with rocks and oil so I can heat it out on the balcony and bring it inside as a heating source. I haven't done it yet, but it should work perfectly well and if you have ten liters of oil and rocks at 200-250C, it should provide quite a bit of heat for a good amount of time. Outside, I could burn gasoline or diesel or whatever that burns. :)
    A few years ago, I actually had a breakdown of the central heating just before Newyears, and nobody could fix the problem until a couple of days later because the room was locked and the guy was of course on holiday. My house is really poorly insulated and I spent those days sitting inside in my sleeping bag. I learned my lesson and now I always keep a few liters of pure ethanol for emergency heating, since it can be burned inside without a pipe or special ventilation. But yes, people should absolutely be prepared for things like this. Weird things happen and they never happen when it's convenient.

On top of this the floods caused extra instability. Now we give a big sigh of relief every time the power comes back on on time. Our neighbouring area this week just spent 36 hours traight without power due to a double cable fault caused by the floods and blackouts. Some areas tried putting backup power on trafic lights but the devices get stolen within hours of being installed. Our cellular towers also don't work well because the bateries can't recharge on time and our hospitals are experiencing big problems as they don't have enough backup power to do what they must for injured and sick. Prepping is no longer a hobby it is a way of life.

    Don't mess with sutures in a survival situation... it takes too long to do by yourself trust me I've done it. Get disposable surgical staplers. They are fairly cheap and easy to use. And frankly a lot less painful then trying to stitch yourselves up. Also they make some very effective adhesive closures.
    You are going to have to scrub out the wound with Betadine, emphasis on SCRUB. And order a few varieties of aquarium antibiotics, also getting injectable penicillin from farm stores is a good Idea, sometimes you aren't conscious to take a pill or need a mega dose to knock down an infection... ive used it myself, so while this isn't medical advice, I'd never suggest that someone do something I haven't tested with my own body first. Works good to temporarily seal a wound,(in conjunction with some other form of closure)if you need to not bleed on something or get into things you might not want to enter a wound that would otherwise penetrate a bandage.
      Remember, we're talking very emergency medical treatments. Situations where being wounded might well be your least worry at the moment. Wounds that need treated in situations where you really need to be elsewhere very fast. And not leaving a trail would be a very good thing.
      If it's just a matter of medical services being overwhelmed or risking exposure by going for medical treatment is ill-advised, a stapler is probably your best value for your money.

I somehow doubt it. The other thing is , suturing is often an art that needs tuition, and practice like driving a car or flying a plane...often, surgeons don't go from sewing up socks to performing surgery.
      In the case of a SHTF scenario, where you cant get a doctor anytime soon, initial deep washing, with saline is the go, and packing if bleeding is severe.
      Packing should be changed regularly, and preferably to treat the wound as "open" that it heals from the inside out. clot formation and granulation occurs, and circulation is re- routed. large arteries nerves and veins should be sutured by a vascular surgeon . The way things seem to be going right now, I wouldn't be surprised if natural gas soon becomes too expensive for most families to heat their homes. Many of us might have to resort to partitioning certain areas within our homes and using alternative methods, like candle heaters, to heat those areas. I've done this in the past and could have heated about half of my home for about $50.00/month, until it became too cold for the candle heaters too be effective.

    One of my biggest pushes now is to save the heat I do have. Insulation and insulating materials are still available. Start by keeping the heat into the entire house now.
    Next, if the worst comes to pass, can you make one room into the main living area. Can you super insulate that room to maintain its temp? It is possible if you plan ahead.

    • @RichWoods23
      @RichWoods23 Před rokem +3

      Focusing on the one room is the right approach. You can hang blankets over the doors and windows, or to close off a stairwell, and be careful never to leave a door open for longer than it takes to get in or out of the room. It can end up looking quite medieval, but that's because it's what people did before central heating was invented!

    • @senseijay51
      @senseijay51 Před rokem +2

      Plastic sheeting the windows first. Blankets are good after. If it is long term, don't just focus on the windows and doors. Consider the walls and the ceiling!
      Room selection is important. My first choice is usually a basement room if you have a basement. Basements are generally cooler, yes. Great for the summer, of course. However, they are also great in the winter because they are cool, but they are more temperature stable. The earth around them offers a natural barrier. It may be 0 degrees outside, but the ground temp is likely 15 degrees or so depending on where you live.
      Once again, don't do just the windows and doors. Do the entire room, including the ceiling. There is also the indoor tent camping option too...

      @@ellenbrooks5028 You need to make sure there's just enough of an air exchange that your candles don't create a build-up of carbon monoxide. For safety's sake, too, don't sleep on the floor if you plan to sleep in that room, because CO is heavier than air and tends to settle when there's less activity in a room, so there'll be a higher concentration of it the lower you go. A small amount is unavoidable with any combustion, but it only needs to reach about 0.3% to become dangerous to humans. Don't place your hamster cage on the floor either, unless of course you plan to use poor Hammy as the canary in the coalmine...

    My OLD house was built in 1947. We've spent a small fortune getting it properly insulated and adding triple paned Windows. It DID have a fireplace at one one time, but it was taken out and walled over before we bought the place. The previous owners put in a propane heater, and with the lack of insulation our first Winter, it cost s fortune to heat. We took THAT out, and learned that Electricity cost nearly as much as the propane.
    Finally, we bought an indoor use Kerosene heater. It was MUCH better in terms of providing heat evenly throughout the building, and our heating bills FINALLY came down. This past year, I got in a deal to get the Kerosene at wholesale, and I bought a BOATLOAD of it! Our Heater works WITHOUT the need for Electricity, so it heats our home when the Grid goes out locally.
    In addition, we now HAVE ON HAND enough Kerosene to heat our House for ALL of this Winter and part of NEXT. I SAW THIS COMING AND ACTED!

    Glad to hear you are contemplating getting a wood stove and as much firewood as possible. You mentioned the very large wood furnaces that a lot of people had but now you can a much smaller unit that is made much more efficient. It will tie into your existing heat ducts to distribute the heat the same as a gas furnace. If the power goes out you will need a battery and a small inverter to run the fan. The only other thing is that it has to be vented separately to the outside and the vent piping is usually triple walled due to the heat of the smoke. Now is the time to do it. Get some useful fireplace/furnace tools ( ash shovel along with a galvanized can to put the hot ash into, a poker and others that you will decide on ) Stay safe. Michigan, USA

I have learned about the use of a bidet in places and years I have lived, outside the US. I am also a backpacker with global experience over 28 years in the Army. Sometimes there are toilet paper shortages. Some folks, especially hikers and bushcrafters, might appreciate the use of a “water bottle bidet” when toilet paper is in short supply, when they don’t have the luxury of a restroom with built in bidet. I understand that some folks might not appreciate my perspective. Some folks may only have insults and rude behavior to contribute, behavior taught and practiced to perfect sophistication in their homes. It’s probably best leave them alone. Kentucky

      Going back to your original post, I'm curious. When you say that paper clogs the toilet and septic systems in Kentucky, is that based on your personal experience? I've been shitting in toilets and living in the country with a septic system pretty near all my life. Dealing with shit and toilet paper is kind of what toilets and septic fields are designed to do. I had to redo my septic field after about 25 years because there was a big Arbutus tree next to it that clogged it all up with roots. That was a conscious choice, I like my Arbutus trees and try not to cut them down. In my experience though, wiping your ass with TP doesn't really throw all that big a monkey wrench into the system, since, as I mentioned earlier, that's kind of what they're designed to do.
      Also, I'm kind of curious, given that you have a rag at hand in your little story, why exactly are you using your fingers again?
      Is this a Kentucky thing?

    Lily, you're doing a great job. I do hope you don't have to bug out to your cousin's place because if you do, it's going to take you several trips to get all your home preps to that location. I suspect that if your area loses power this winter for an extended period, things will spiral out of control very quickly. People do crazy things when they, or their kids, are hungry. It seems to me like they are intentionally doing this to Europe just to see how many people they can kill off. Truly sadistic.

      You're exactly right, Putin is intentionally doing this to Europe just to see if they will whimper and collapse like pansies. Give it to you at cost.

    • @RichWoods23
      @RichWoods23 Před rokem +1

      There won't be any blackouts for extended periods, no longer than you'd get from a normal outage caused by a winter storm, etc. The plan in most countries is to have rolling outages if it becomes necessary, so that no area is without power for more than four hours in twenty-four but there's an overall reduction in energy usage. That's going to be bearable for the vast majority of people (except for the usual insufferable selfish gobshites, anyway), since they won't lose frozen food and can plan cooking and washing around the outages.
      You're right that Putin won't give a shit about anyone dying, though. He's much more concerned about his oligarch friends regaining access to their foreign assets. In practice I think that if he misjudges it and does piss too many people off, the oligarchs will end up having their assets confiscated, not just frozen.

So each fall/winter I give the wood away to people in need. Friends tell me about these people. Also wood to burn does not have to be from logs. Burn sticks. I make bundles of sticks about 8" in dia. Easy to make and move. As always work safe. I just had a knee replaced and the people I have helped in the past have been helping me. As always measure how much wood, fuel, food, etc,etc you use. You do not know how long you will survive without doing this.

    How is anyone expected to stay below 19 c with an uncontrolled wood burner? Cheers Lilly, Austria looks well equipped compared to Australia. Polymedical Dissection Kit: has already sold out on Amazon Au, and our toilet paper stocks are a freaking joke. Yet people are waking up. Some sections of shelves are increasingly empty, and many long term packets and cans/tins are stripped as soon as stock arrives. Food is going up massively in the land of plenty. Yet, when I hit Costco and supermarkets many are still oblivious and shopping carts are full of junk food stuffs for immediate gratification and sugar hits. Freezers are barely 1/4 full, and if this energy crisis hits here, which I believe it will as Australia will be obliged to send LNG abroad, for the highest bidder, I too expect power rationing and supermarkets no longer being able to run freezers. Those storage barrels are great for dried food and water storage. Yet for anyone living in a unit/apartment, do not lose faith. There is plenty of room under bed/s to store packaged food in square containers with wheels. We have about 6 months food under just one double bed and have 2 other singles we are working on for long term storage foods. Save those PET soda bottles and rinse well and fully dried. With some Chlorine added (I think one drop per litre) this can provide ample water storage. Stay safe all. Things are about to get even more crazy.
