Update February 2023: After nearly two months of KETO I brought my HOMA IR down to 1.6 :)
Forgot to tell you guys about another symptom. When eating a lot of carbs I had a feeling if somebody would grab my kidneys. I even went to the hospital but doctors would not believe me. Strange feeling. With reduced carbs that feeling went away tough.

Sorry to hear this Lilly but at least you caught it early! That said, along w/following your Dr's advice, please look up Dr Berg on youtube... he has 10M + subs & covers keto & diabetes 2. Also, regarding prepping and keto, don't forget about sardines/sprats and beef, chicken, turkey & pork "jerky." You should also look into freeze-drying and/or buying your own freeze-dryer, of which, I would actually like to see you add freeze-drying videos to your youtube channel! Just a few comments for you Lillly. You are in a good spot right now to stop it! So happy you found out before it completely took over. I'm a type 2, have been that way for many years and you can control it with no medication. The thing is, it's going to hurt your preps because you really have to avoid pretty much "white" foods. Rice, Potatoes, bread, things like that. Now with that said, you might be able to tolerate small portions of those things, it takes lots of testing on yourself to see what carbs you absolutely have to avoid. This means, testing at the 1hr, 2hr and 3rd hour after meals to see how it does. Now the body is a funny thing though, what works today, might not work tomorrow. So you have to do lots of testing on the same foods on different days to truly understand if something affects you or not. It's just a big pain but if you put in the testing, then you will know what you can and can't eat.
Please look up Dr Jason Fung here on youtube. He is a wonderful diabetic specialist whose videos saved my life and that can show you many things you can do to help your diabetes. You will be shocked at the things that can set you off. Also, please be careful of zero carb sweetners. Some will work for you, some will spike you. You will have to do testing on those as well but it's totally worth it if you still want the sweet treat every now and then as there are some very nice keto dessert recipes that you can make in as quick as 90 seconds. Keto has it's benefits and I love it but I am less limited than you are on your food alergies so it might make it a little tougher to get variety but not impossible. Keep your chin up, you are in a great spot right now in that you know long before it becomes much harder to deal with. Bravo to you for trying to bring awarness to diabetes.

I dealt with this from 2014-2016, and was even on Metformin. A clean diet of meat and veggies, and cutting out carbs and sugars, I have healed my body and no longer need meds. I've actually just recently been able to come off my thyroid meds too...all because of a strict, clean diet :)

  • @Enjoymentboy
    @Enjoymentboy Před rokem +94

I've been low carb since 2003. Stopped weighing myself when I hit 326lbs and I would not be the least bit shocked to find out I hit a max of 350-360lbs before I started low carb. Lost 23lbs the first month. Over the years I've found low carb to be rather easy once you get into the swing of it. The first key is nothing white...no bread, pasta, rice, sugar or starch. ZERO grains. period! All the leafy greens you want and flowers are fine but no seeds. The hardest part I have found is adding enough fat into my diet. Generally if I have trouble I just add butter. I'm 200lbs now and I'm 6'5". I also have removed all processed seed oils from my diet and the only plant sources of fat for me are olive and coconut oil and a little sesame oil for flavour. Other than that it is lard, tallow and butter. As much as I want. I eat 15-20 eggs a week and snack on meat all the time. I also found it VERY helpful to get it out of your mind that there is a meal time. Our body's don't tell time. Eat throughout the day and the cravings are easily managed. Basically just graze.
I also found it helpful to look at carbs like a narcotic.. Treat getting off carbs like you are quitting cocaine or heroin. It's not going to be fun or easy but you CAN do it if you honestly want to. There's going to be days where you're going to feel emotional pain and it'll make it much harder to stay strong and away from the carbs. As for dairy the higher the fat the lower the lactose in it. I can't have milk as I am VERY lactose intolerant but I can have all the 10% and 35% cream I can stomach with no problems. No cheese though. Bear in mind that a lot of people can't have mushrooms when doing low carb so if you're a mushroom fan you're going to want to watch that as well. I found it best to restrict your diet VERY hard at first and then add back in one food at a time. Try it for a few days and see how your body responds. if it's good then you know you can keep having it. if you have negative reactions then check it off the list and go on to the next one. Pretty soon you'll be able to build up your diet enough to get a good picture of what you can and can't have. I try to keep my total carbs down to less than 50 grams a day.
It's going to be very hard but you CAN do it. I promise.

Lily... You probably have developed what is called "Leaky Gut". I developed this, and my health took a nose dive. I believe Ive always had mild allergies to dairy and wheat... but when I developed leaky gut... things got 1000x worse. In fact, I also used to eat eggs without issues. When my gut was leaking, if I ate eggs... it would cause my intestines to swell up to the point where I couldnt go poop for like 3 days. Daily caused me to get so phlegmy, that Id be hacking up mucus for several hours. Wheat would cause extreme fatigue, but also.. it was causing auto-immune responses. It blocked nutrient absorption.. so would cause great bodily pains, joint pains, etc.. because the body didnt have the needed nutrients to do daily repairs. The auto immune responses, started with the needed removal of my Gall Bladder. From that point... I started to develop a Nodule on my thyroid... and so they removed half of my thyroid. Right before things hit their worst... Id eat a bowl of pasta, and in less than 30 min.. Id have an explosive toilet session. That was enough to finally get me to realize, that there was a Gluten allergy... and eventually, I changed my diet, which vastly improved my health.
Still, it would take some time, to repair my Leaky Gut. I was out of work for over a year.. and so I went into a deep state of depression. During that time, I didnt feel like spending much time cooking.. so I bought a large box of frozen hamburger patties at Walmart... and Id fry a single burger up once a day. I ate nothing else, other than maybe some fried potatoes, on occasion. Eventually I bought a micro nutrient liquid Vitamin mix (expensive, but very powerful), and I also tried some collagen powder (for a month). I think it might have taken half a year or more, before my gut was mostly / fully healed.
I slowly tried a few things. First was yogurt. Next was to try some cheese. Neither of them were causing massive issues like before. Next was eggs. I was no longer getting massive inflammation of my intestines, with eggs. And finally, I started to try eating some wheat / pasta. I no longer had massive explosive bathroom issues. That said, I know it still made me more tired, and still effects me negatively. In fact, even dairy still has a negative effect on me... but again, its still a Fraction of what it was, as my worst state.
I have a theory, that leaky gut, is caused by GMO corn, put into Candy. They might have changed the GMO corn to be less harmful, quietly, without anyone knowing about it. Then again, it might also be brought on by Glyphosate (round up pesticide.. which is often still found in traces, on wheat products). Whatever the case is, I believe it starts destroying your gall bladder first.. and then eventually messing up your thyroid. From there, things get worse and worse... into a mega downwards spiral.

Good luck with your health issue👍 Something people might want to keep in mind is getting to many carbs in your diet. Especially when it it comes to prepping. Many of the long-term food kits rely mostly on carbs for caloric content. Better to buy #10 cans so you can pick and choose your food preps. Although you may pay a bit more doing preps this way. Your prep stash will keep you much healthier when you do need them😺
Thanks for sharing this info with us Lily!👍😸

Really sorry to hear this. I am a PhD biochemist and spent 10 years in the area of type 2 diabetes.
You have a fairly rare set of characteristics. Bummer. All the very best to you. Hopefully you can control it through diet and exercise. It does sound like there is an autoimmune component, which is a factor in type 1.
There is a Lilly drug which helps with insulin insensitivity. It is close to a drug I helped develop for a different pharma firm but which never went to market for business reasons, not medical reasons.
All the very best to you.

Lilly, thank you for all your videos. My husband grew up eating eggs every single day but when he was in his mid 20s eggs started making him sick. It was very strange and for over a decade he would not eat them at all. Finally we moved to a country house and started raising few chickens for our kids. We would use only non-soy organic chicken feed and it turns out he could eat those eggs just fine, no problem at all. The store bought organic eggs would still make him a little sick because those hens are fed feed that contain organic soy (he is sensitive to soy). I just wanted to mentioned it to you, if you have not done it already just try truly organic eggs from hens never fed soy. I hope it helps! Hugs and best wishes from Florida

Recovering T2D here. It's definitely reversible, and you caught it early. Sounds like you got a good doctor testing your insulin level and mentioning the carbohydrate link to T2D caused by metabolic syndrome. For me, dropping my carb intake to 20g or less a day has enabled me to keep my diabetes in remission. Initially, I cut out all the processed
efined carbs and all the sugars. I was surprised to see how many processed foods are loaded with sugar. Breads, rice and pastas were the final things I gave up. Keto's definitely a good way to go. I'd like to suggest for fish, sardine, mackerel, and herring. They are smaller fish so they'll have lower heavy metal levels. For reference, my HOMA-IR is 1.4 now. My HbA1c went from 9.8% to 5.3%.

Thanks for sharing Lilly - I was diagnosed in 2017. I was depressed after the diagnosis. I bought a Porsche because that was on my bucket list.
Stay strong and it’s not the end of the world. When I was pre-diabetic, I decided to go on metformin to help my body heal. I had to take the slow acting one because the normal one makes me feel bad. Metamucil is your friend and helps keep blood sugars down and prevents you from over eating. I’ve had to increase my exercise and what types of exercise I do. Doing weightlifting helps use another metabolic pathway that directly puts glucose into muscle without insulin. As for prepping , I too had to change what I had to save for food. I bought a freeze dryer from harvest right and started to freeze dry meat and bought canned proteins and nuts. Again thanks for sharing you’re not alone in this journey. Best wishes to you.

Hi Lilly. Thanks for sharing this. As for me I am a Type II diabetic on insulin. I avoid the Keto diet like the plague because it was never intended as a diet. Having to monitor my blood sugar 4 times a day, I would also have to get a keto monitor to track the level of acid in my blood. The keto diet can cause damage to the heart, kidneys, pancreas and brain if not monitored correctly. I avoid whole nuts like cashews and pistachios. No more processed foods and especially no more foods like the camping dehydrated foods. I am sugar free, but there are always foods that can produce sugar in the body. Keep an eye on your blood pressure as well! I hope and pray you do beat the pre stage, because Type II really sucks.

Hello Lilly, and thank you for posting this. Here in the USA there are countless people with pre-diabetes, many of which don't know about it. Sadly, at least here in the USA, the condition is not taken seriously by the medical community until it crosses the threshold of full-on type-2 diabetes. Common treatment is simply adding more and more insulin to a carb-rich diet, and blaming everything else. Several years ago I too was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. The doctor I had at the time sadly wasn't too concerned, while their reaction should have been to immediately educate me. I already was already feeling terrible, so I soon found my own motivation to get healthy.
One of the biggest issues with diabetes and pre-diabetes is the effects on the body of insulin itself. It's a major growth hormone. If I understand what I've been reading correctly, increases in insulin begin to happen years before sugar levels rise. The body's muscle cells still absorb the sugars from the high-carb diet, but it takes more and more insulin to do it. At some point, the pancreas simply can't keep up with the demand, the muscles can't absorb all the sugar, then this sugar stays in the bloodstream longer and longer. From this point, it only gets worse until medications are prescribed to increase insulin production, or even directly supplementing insulin. It's at this point it becomes IMPOSSIBLE to lose weight, yet sadly weight is seen as a cause and not an effect of insulin resistance. It breaks my heart so many people are "fat shamed" at this stage, especially considering a large number of thin people have the same exact condition.
My suggestion is to do a ton of reading on the topic. In addition, there are a couple youtube channels I recommend:
Ken Berry MD gets right to the point on these things. Both he and his wife eat a ketogenic diet, and his wife overcame hashimoto's with keto.
    www.youtube.com/@KenDBerryMD
Dr. Cywes is another great source of information on his youtube channel and really gets into the details. He also focuses on the addiction aspect of carb consumption.
    www.youtube.com/@DrCywesCarbAddictionDoc
Dr. Ud, a friend and co-worker of mine has a youtube channel that has a lot of great environmental content, and of particular importance to you may be his videos on mercury in fish, and which fish to consume and which to avoid.
    www.youtube.com/@TheBreathingEnvironment
Lastly I've been considering starting a low-carb cooking youtube channel, based on really simple constraints like making ingredients easy to source, the meals easy to cook, and the overall-cost affordable. I've found this journey and a new found awareness enlightening. With nothing but a cast iron skillet, anyone can rival the best steakhouses around, and usually at less than the price of a salad.
Oh yeah, I totally reversed my pre-diabetes. I also lost 55 lbs in the process. (and kept it off 2+ years) The amount of pain I wake up with is now 0, my resting pulse in in the high 50's, I only pee once a night, and running isn't hard. Health should always be a major part of all our preps. You've got this. You're in control of it. Results on keto happen swiftly. Hang on!

My husband was diagnosed with prediabetic condition a few years ago, also with high blood pressure. I started to make a drink from fresh ginger root with cinnamon and cloves, and with other herbs it got him back on track. For high blood pressure he was drinking cranberry juice and ate lots of garlic (I would bake it in the oven so it would not have a strong smell). This ginger drink became our number one and I always have a bottle in the fridge.

Aloe didn't taste good but I drank it when I had an upset stomach and just sucked it up. It felt like a miracle within about 20 minutes. Sometimes the simplest answers turn out to be the right answers.

A few years back I lost all of my hair. It was from a bad case of a type of scleroderma, morphea. I got this disease from working in a medical lab for decades, and found that many women can get this disease, working around chemicals, by the time they are in their fifties. I eventually retired from the lab and moved away from the big city. Although my mother said that having no hair was not a big deal, she wept when my hair came back years later. My hair had always been straight, without any body. It came back curly and full of life of its own. I will always have the morphea, but at least my hair came back, the rest of me kind of looks like a leopard as my skin is constantly making scar tissue where there was no injury.

Lilly, I remember when you told us you are hypothyroid. Now this. I want to tell you that this is the way it happened to me. First thyroid, then diabetes! There was so very much the doctors did not tell me for many years. Medical stuff. And foods to eliminate or severely limit. Rice, bread, pizza, potatoes, pretzels, chips, tortillas/taco shells, pasta, beans. When they first told me to go to a plant based diet, I thought I would be fine because I already ate a lot of vegetables, and some rice and beans, and soy. They should have named the foods I should not eat.
Note for your thyroid: rutabagas and turnips and some other brassica / cruciferous vegetables. and soy, are not good for thyroid. Use in strict moderation.
I could not understand why the doctors seemed to almost ignore my thyroid once I became diabetic. I inquired. My endocrinologist looked straight at me and said, "Because the diabetes will kill you much faster. The thyroid is controlled by medication. But diabetes is a progressive disease no matter what you do, so you must be very careful, in order to live a "normal" life."
Follow you doctors advice, of course.

I had something similar. Then I made the lifestyle change to go on intermittent fasting a little over half year ago, since then my bloodwork returned to normal, no longer at risk of diabetes and as long as I don't overeat carbs and milk products, I can pretty much eat anything.
It does worth to take a look into the benefits of intermittent fasting.
I have started out with just skipping breakfast because I never had time in the mornings anyway, and I spent the most time on the so called 18/6 daily plan. Once you get your body trained to not confuse cravings with hunger or thirst, it becomes easy enough that you can even forget about that you were supposed to eat.
I have gone from 114kg to 104kg with cutting out added sugars and bread from my diet, and only then I started the intermittent fasting, where I gone from 104kg to 85kg which I currently maintain without effort.

When you fast and drink distilled water it flushes out your liver, kidneys giving them a rest from processing.

My uncle was tested as diabetic 1. His wife always had deserts around. He cut his simple carbs, started getting some exercise while getting his weekly chiropractic adjustments from me to make sure his nervous system was functioning optimally. He went for a follow up test and it was negative. He's been good ever since.
The point I'm making is there can be simple ways that your body is affected. Occams razor so to speak. Start with the simple and most likely reasons and work your way from there. Every body is unique and has the innate power to heal. Listen to your body, keep a journal and most importantly keep positive.

Bless your heart! As someone who has had blood sugar issues and whose child was just diagnosed with an egg allergy, you have a lot of labels to read and a lot of products to avoid. I too deal with thyroid issues. Eggs MAY or MAY NOT be in just about everything. Starting Dr Berg’s Keto and IF diet soon as I’m currently overweight and not feeling healthy. Berries are the lowest sugar fruits! Good luck! More info on your food intolerance test would be fabulous. You need freeze dried meat, canned chicken/beef/ham (watch for sugar and intolerances)! You WILL find solutions - you are a solution oriented person and I know you will make it through this. Thanks for sharing with us all of this info! I love sausage, peppers, and onions for breakfast on keto and when I’m preparing breakfast for the family.

If you haven’t already, ask your Dr to have your Vitamin D levels checked and go on D3 supplementation. Most people in the northern hemisphere require supplementation. Low D levels have links to both Hashimoto’s and impact on HbA1c and immune function. Thank you for sharing your symptoms and bringing awareness! Your prep changes are things many others have to consider as well, so that in itself is helpful for you to share. 🙏🏻 for restored health.

Vit d3 must be taken with vit k2. The calcium produced by good level of d3 must be transported to the right area, k2 is the transporter of calcium. When not enough k2, calcium can stuck in vaines or kidneys so stones and calcification will form.

Sorry to hear about your condition. You are adding new meaning to "Survival Lilly" Really good you are taking action to correct the problem. You might check out intermittent fasting, it gives your body a rest from insulin. I would cut out all added sugar, you don't need it. I feel those swings and have done much better without sugar and carbs. Thanks for your inspiring videos.

Lilly, I have been on keto diet for 2 and a 1/2 years now. I was at 215 pounds now I'm 175 pounds. My A1C was 5.8 at the first warning from my doctor, 3 months later after cutting a lot of carbs out I thought it would go down but the A1C was 6.0, thats pre-diabetic. The doctor told me if that gets to 6.5 he has to diagnose me with type 2 diabetes. So I went on keto and 3 months later my A1C was 5.2!👏. I only eat 0 calorie natural sweetners, monkfruit, Stevia, erythritol etc., its expensive but your heath is worth it. There is so much good advise on youtube, I followed Thomas Delauer, he practices "clean keto". Ingredients are important too. Good luck on your journey. BTW, chickpea is a chick..a baby chicken and a pea, green pea as in pea soup , put them together chick pea!
