My mother was a Hiroshima survivor and lived to be 82. She told me how horrible it was as they lived on the north side of the city. The city was all on fire and the next morning (not knowing about radioactive fallout) she and her aunt and uncle who she was staying with, went into the city looking for her parents, brother and sisters. She never found them. Her aunt and uncle raised her and she had a wonderful life. I will never forget her talking about everything she saw that day. God be with us and I pray we do not see this again.

Lilly, my wife and I watched Threads (1984) one Saturday night and although it destroyed our mood, I think it was useful in planning for the possibility. (It's kind of a worst-case scenario from the UK perspective, for those who haven't seen it). I recommend it as a primer that can help take some of the mystery out of it. Also, I recommend everyone watch the Beirut AN explosion and the recent Russian meteor videos, as most people didn't seem to realize that the what you see and the initial shock you feel in the ground will be followed by the one in the air, so you have time to get away from windows and balconies. A nuke will be accompanied by the flash and shaking of the ground, then a very long time can go by where you can save lives, including your own. Lilly, you have already undoubtedly saved many lives by preparing them with very good knowledge. I like your shirt too. Thank you! 💪🇺🇸👍
We did the same one saturday night and it really made us quite subdued for a day or two after. It really helped us focus on 'trying ' to be a bit more prepared. We both work in the energy sector one in nuclear and we both know surviving after would be literally a living Hell. 😔😥🧭☹

Hi Lilly: My father was in the Pacific with the US Navy and was involved with 6 of the above ground Nuclear tests in the Mid 1950s. (Some of the biggest conducted by the USA.) Some covered his ship by accident with atomic fall out particles. He was in charge of decontamination. He passed away in 2012 at 94 years old. He never suffered the effects of radiation. Having my father as a living guide and an “Atomic Veteran,” I was educated with what I am to do. I was a US Army Combat Medic. Emphasis in Nuclear Biological and Chemical warfare. Emphasis in decontamination and treatment in the field of a forward Aid Staton. Foods stored in cans, closed airtight packages, (depending on proximity of the blast effect,) are safe to consume as long as the dust from fallout is wiped away before opening. Same for water in sealed containers. Fuels such as wood, gas fuel, coal which is covered with fallout should be avoided since it can cause the radioactive fallout to be placed back into the air. Decontamination first flushing with non contaminated water is first rinsing away atomic particles. Moving to a non contaminated area. A shower of soap and water is used as normal. Disposing of any suspected clothes, shoes, and garments being contaminated in a plastic bag prior to the shower.
Again, non contaminated water for drinking and decontamination. Water from sealed containers. Lawrence Livermore technical people drink, BEER, to rid the body of Tritium each day.. (So I been told by those who had worked there. Perhaps it was an excuse to drink Beer.)
Around 1987 I worked in a research lab and I did the monthly radiation surveys-we worked with lots of radioactive tracers like phosphorus, iodine, tritium, sulfur, etc. At the end of the survey I was checking my body to make certain I was not contaminated and the radiation meter went off when I checked my left wrist. The Seiko self illuminating watch I was wearing had radioactive material on its dial. I purchased the watch in the early 1980s. At that time Seiko used Promethium-147 on their watch dials. Promethium-147 is a weak Beta particle emitter and does not emit any Gamma radiation. The radiation did not penetrate through the watch back so my wrist was not being irradiated, but I still got rid of the watch.
I wore one of those watches in the 1980's. Now, at 60, all the hair in a ring around my wrist where I wore that watch is completely white. White, not grey.
Yup i found the radioiodine/c14 probe from a survey set detects the weak x rays from the tritium vials in the watches using them. The plutonium detector probe is even more insanely sensitive since the gamma is such low energy. It was an ADM radac set model 200. 🤓
Old lume in 40-50s even use radium. Btw is phosphorus detrimetal for health? would you please check modern lume of modern watch? (seiko, citizen --the luminova, lumibrite etc)

To help counteract radioactive fallout, pick up some Potassium Iodide tablets. It helps with accidental and incidental ingestion of fallout (through eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin absorbed, etc.) Also, if you head to your bugout shelter, don't burn any wood that's been contaminated with radiation. I pray for your safety.
Excellent observation. Worldwide martial law is what the elites want and the "pandemic" didn't fully accomplish it. This conflict with Russia is the next attempt to take total control of everything. Remaining in power while reducing the worldwide population by a very large number is their primary goal. Private property will not be allowed for normal people. Had a vision two years ago that it would happen in 2025. It was World War 3 and ended in nuclear war by the end of 2030. Billions dead, very little survivors left.
You need to keep it shielded in a faraday cage as a NEMP will destroy the amplifier connected to the antenna. A cardboard box wraped on all sides with alum foil will work. You want the cardboard as an insulator, you cannot wrap the radio directly.
The only thing my dad left me was his Mido Multifort watch with ah radioactive dial...Thanks Dad As for fallout on a greenhouse a simple water wash down system would clean the fallout from the glass of the greenhouse. Would be good to have smooth concrete all around the greenhouse to lead the contaminated water away from the structure.
In the US Navy in the early 80s, one of the excersice I had to do was plot fallout maps for various nuke yield explosions. At 18 years old I determined then that if the nukes fly, I wanted to be at ground zero of a blast. I still feel that way now. I'd much rather be vaporized in a mili-second than survive the aftermath. Thank you, Lilly, for addressing this difficult issue. It is hard to face this. Every day I feel the same way and I've been prepping nearly 20 years. I bought an old, re-conditioned geiger counter about 12 years ago precisely because of my concern about EMP waves destroying electronics. Mine is very old fashioned with no electronics in it. I do have it in a Faraday cage just in case the circuit board gets fried. It measures higher doses of radiation in roentgens but I got another one that measures radiation in millisieverts because I wanted something I could use to check outside food sources for contamination at lower levels. Neither were cheap. The millisievert one is Russian made and cost me $500 but it is now over $1,000 for the same thing. The re-conditioned one from 1980 was around $350 from a company in Texas that will re-calibrate for you and are very reliable. Cresson Kearney's book also opened my eyes 20 years ago to the possibility of surviving radioactive fallout and it has been my go to book ever since.
All Geiger detectors are electronic by nature. The device consists of a gas filled tube with several hundred volts applied across it. Incoming radiation ionizes a gas atom which triggers an avalanche of ionizations due to the voltage. These flashes are counted by the electronic circuits in the detector. A proper Faraday cage should protect it though.
Sorry, but you cannot use a gieger to check for food contamination. issue is that the food (water in the food) can shield against alpha & beta radiation, and even a small amount of radioactive contaminents can be harmful. Food & water is tested using a HPGe (High performace Germanium) detector inside heavy shielded container (thick lead).
Yaeko negata steidel survived the Hiroshima, Nagasaki bombing. She wrote a book about women, mothering to stop war mongering. My wife changed her and I helped. She had flower shaped scars across her side. She told us all. On a mountain she saw fire and storm. Her daughter was/is president at ashram in Virginia ,diananda. Can not remember more, but there were survivors who lived to old age. Stay clean and wise. She taught us to eat very good organic food to get, stay well! My father had professional gigercounter whenever he traveled after military service. He found a glowing handle with it in our house.
Just make sure to protect your geiger counters from an airborne EMP strike prior to the groundburst strike. All your geigers will be useless if you don't. Protect your equipment!

You can also use a camera sensor with a small bit of tape over it perhaps or in a perfectly dark room. If the black screen shows white pixel dots on occasion, your camera is getting hit be "radiation". So most phones could be used as sensors in an emergency!
@@penultimateh766 To be honest, if you have a situation where *you* need to buy a Geiger counter, it's already too late for you. If you are buying one now, in preparation, you are wasting money vs the odds you are correct, and as said, if you are correct, there is nothing that knowing the radiation is there will do for you if you ever get to use it. Current CCDs on phones probably wont show any easily visible activated pixels unless you are at ground zero. But it's about as useful as the above tester. If an event happens, you'll probably know about it by the explosion, before you get to put the batteries in your detector!

Belarus got the biggest fall out from Chernobyl. The results of it were a lot of women had breast cancer, children were born with disabilities and leukemia, in some areas people were limping. We were advised to go to radiation free countries on holiday to eat radiation free food. This helped as my radiation level after 1 month away dropped significantly. All this reminded me how much Belarusian people suffered through several wars, Chernobyl fall out and collapse of USSR. In 2020 protestors were tortured, raped and put to prison. God help Belarusian people and the rest of the world!

Many years ago I used to sell antique watches. Had a customer come in with his Geiger counter, an old mechanical one. The few watches with the radium hands and dial markers all made the counter move. If you really want some excitement open the watch so the dial is exposed. Then see what reading you get. Many people died during the early 1920s who were painting the dials and hands. They would put the tip of the brush in their mouths to get a finer point on the brush. Little did they know.
The mantles for gas lamps using camping gas are normally fairly radioactive. There's also a part of old boilers that uses thorium in the metal and you can get a doserate off that. Ionising smoke detectors have Am-241 in them but DO NOT disassemble 1 to get the source - you WILL come off second best. However if you put 36 fully intact smoke detectors in a small box and put a detector in the middle of them you'll pick up a small doserate off that too.
Shielding: There is a term “halving thickness”. Or, what is the thickness of a given material behind which you can halve the radiation dose (gamma radiation). What thickness of what material will shield you from halve the radiation dose? 14 millimeters of lead…or, 64 millimeters (2.5 inches) of concrete….or, 305 millimeters (12 inches) of soil. Therefore, there is a radiologic event. You make your way to the basement of a commercial or industrial building (ideal). Your under a 305 millimeter (12 inch) concrete floor. You halving the dose 4 times…0.5 to 0.25 to 0.125 to 0.0625. Your getting 6.25 percent the dose (gamma) that you would otherwise get outside. All that said, dust entering your shelter and you ingesting the dust is another issue. This is where beta radiation is the primary concern. Duct tape the door crevices or use plastic sheeting (drop cloth). I’m probably just going to drink a bottle of bourbon myself.

I bought an ex military geiger counter for £35 and it works fine. It is worth noting the military ones like mine can detect high levels as well as the low. Some geiger counters only go up to 1000.
Sorry Lilly, but Europe is in for a very rough winter. I am leaving San Diego, CA in 3 weeks for the mountains of North Carolina. I'm moving to an area that puts my back up against 6K foot of mountains. I have also been prepping for 10 years plus. I feel very confident I can survive most natural, political and whatever else comes my way. Get rural, get far from people, get more self reliant, get more off grid. It's gonna get really bad before it gets good again!
Good preps Lilly. A Faraday cage would be an essential prep as well to protect your electronics including your Geiger counter from an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) or a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) event. A man made EMP could be caused by a high-altitude nuclear detonation that produces a brief burst of electromagnetic energy that can damage/disable any electrical device that isn't shielded. Cellphones, automobiles, trains, planes, and any part of the electrical power grid could be damaged and disabled. The area impacted by such an event could be regional or even global. The Carrington Event of 1859 was a naturally produced CME from the sun that damaged telegraph systems across Europe and North America.
Lilly, I worked in a nuclear power plant in America in the 1990s. Obviously we had to go through a lot of "rad" training. When we had to "wand" each other in class to check for "contamination" our instructor would stick a regular Coleman Gas Lantern mantel somewhere on a persons body and it emitted enough radiation to register on the Geiger counter. I don't know if they are made differently nowadays, but you might go to a sporting goods store and test them- they're like $4 at Walmart. Let me know if they are still ACTIVE!😀😀
Hi Lily! I bought a Geiger Counter about 6 mo ago to check my entire home/property, all appliances, computers, cell phones, outlets, and my hybrid car.... I also purchased a lot of faraday fabrics, cases for all our devices, and although the emissions are fairly low, I have always felt that when we are constantly bombarded, it is very unfortunate for our health. So even if we do not enter into a nuclear exchange, it is a good thing to have around. Thanks for all the info and helpful tips!

Anything from that era with luminous features would be the same. The women factory workers in factories that made such things would lick their brushes that they used to apply the radium paint to the products, needless to say, many of them died from radiation poisoning. Even today many consumer products have radioactive material in them, for example, smoke detectors, some semi conductors and, wrist watches. I have several watches that have glow tubes for hour markers and the hands. Those glow markers use tritium to create the glow, which is guaranteed to last 25 years minimum. It is harmless though. In addition to watches that used radium in those early years, there were many decorative glass articles that used radium treated glass, it was seen as beneficial to health!

Cigar boxes and Aluminum adhesive duct tape make great faraday cages. Every time I want to speak about the crooked corrupt US government, I put my phone in the faraday cage.
To put u at ease, I fix old watches as a hobby and I deal with old radium paint sometimes. What iv learned is that as long as u don't lick the paint or put it directly on ur skin for a long time, u should be fine. So as long as u don't have any conditions where u would be sensitive to it, then it is perfectly fine to handle that watch or wear it. Ya it probably isn't smart to wear it for years(like u said) but don't worry about trying to store that watch perfectly etc... O I had my neighbor check me one time after I had to use some old radium paint and he said I was fine. I just made sure to work with it in a ventilated area and wore gloves when I was painting the watch with it. So ya, don't worry about having that watch or how to store it as long as ur in normal health.
I think it's a reasonable consideration at this point. I read that there's a Russian submarine off the arctic coast that is carrying a 24 meter nuke. which if detonated will cause a massive tsunami. 🤔 I've definitely upped my prep game lately making hidden supply caches and flee vehicles ready. it's time to prep. great video lily.
I was in nuclear misses when in the service and I can tell you for a fact that we have been closer to a nuclear incident then we are now (early 70s) . If it comes down to a nuclear war no need to fret, even bacteria won't survive.
The Main Thing that will protect you is the amount of material between you and the source of the Radio Active Containments. So, you need to be in a Basement or Bunker with as much Concrete and Packed Earth above you as possible. I have a Proper Shelter that is Deep Underground but most people will not have access to anything like that. So, a Deep Basement is the best and easiest method. Good to see you have a Geiger Counter. I hope you have several Dosimeters that you can wear when you have to leave your Temporary Shelter. Good Luck Lilly.

I had a Civil Defense survey meter when I was a teenager. I found it interesting and useful to check background radiation. I did not then know that I was a "downwinder" of the Nevada nuclear testing; background radiation was about 19 counts per minute or second I don't remember, but when I tried it in Hawaii it was only 3.

Radioactive paint was used a lot on WW2 allied warplanes instruments to allow the crew to read them without lights. These were painted in the factories almost exclusively by women (in the UK at least, as women had replaced men in factory jobs_. They had a habit of licking the tip of the paintbrushes to get a fine tip to paint the small parts on these instruments, leading to a large number of mouth cancers several years later. Lesson learned - don't lick radioactive paint !
Those used Americium-241 which is an alpha emitter. The source was shielded so unless you broke it open (I wouldn't) I doubt you'd be able to detect anything.

I worked in a large metal scrap yard for a long time and we had radioactive loads come in all the time they just buried it in the fields but some gets through so its all around us already in new steel products.
Excellent video. If you do use a respirator to prevent ingesting radioactive fallout, be sure to check the filters for a buildup of radioactive material.
If you should ever have fallout from a nuclear explosion, a Geiger counter won't be of much use. At the high radiation rates you will experience, the voltage across the tube falls and the tube doesn't count properly, in effect it is saturated. An ionisation counter is what civil defence people use.
a tidbit....steel mined and made before 1945 is often sold at premium prices for medical test equipment because after 1945 when atomic bombs were set off the whole world experienced a slight contamination so that now there is higher background radiation.
Lilly, it’s good to let everyone know how useful a Geiger counter can be. Radiation is invisible and at high levels, extremely dangerous. A Geiger counter will also let you know when radiation levels decline and it’s safe to emerge from cover and resume more normal activities. You can also check that clothing, food and water are not contaminated. I do have one, but when you have only one of something, it’s good to acquire a backup even though good ones can be expensive. I used the instructions, from Nuclear War Survival Skills, to assemble a dosimeter from aluminum foil and a tomato sauce can. Not sure if it would work but a fun project. During the early 1970's Red China was performing open air testing of nuclear weapons, after one test we caught fallout from China and the dairy farmers had to dump milk, 50 years later we are still here. I know for a fact the 1950s and 60s the Civil Defense medical kits contained a huge bottle of diazepam (Valium) after finding one in an abandoned CD shelter in Death Valley.
@@marygallagher3428 I picked up twelve CD V-742 dosimeters and Model CD V-750 Model 6 charger used to charge and zero the dosimeters years back. Of the 12 V-742s 8 still hold a charge and appear to be functional. There is even a service (KI4U, Inc.) on Ebay that uses original Civil Defense test equipment to service and calibrate Civil Defense Radiation detection gear.

My mother was a Hiroshima survivor and lived to be 82. She told me how horrible it was as they lived on the north side of the city. The city was all on fire and the next morning (not knowing about radioactive fallout) she and her aunt and uncle who she was staying with, went into the city looking for her parents, brother and sisters. She never found them. Her aunt and uncle raised her and she had a wonderful life. I will never forget her talking about everything she saw that day. God be with us and I pray we do not see this again.

Lilly, my wife and I watched Threads (1984) one Saturday night and although it destroyed our mood, I think it was useful in planning for the possibility. (It's kind of a worst-case scenario from the UK perspective, for those who haven't seen it). I recommend it as a primer that can help take some of the mystery out of it. Also, I recommend everyone watch the Beirut AN explosion and the recent Russian meteor videos, as most people didn't seem to realize that the what you see and the initial shock you feel in the ground will be followed by the one in the air, so you have time to get away from windows and balconies. A nuke will be accompanied by the flash and shaking of the ground, then a very long time can go by where you can save lives, including your own. Lilly, you have already undoubtedly saved many lives by preparing them with very good knowledge. I like your shirt too. Thank you! 💪🇺🇸👍

Just had my wife watch Threads with me also. It shook the holy crap out of her but got her thinking on the right lines.
We did the same one saturday night and it really made us quite subdued for a day or two after. It really helped us focus on 'trying ' to be a bit more prepared. We both work in the energy sector one in nuclear and we both know surviving after would be literally a living Hell. 😔😥🧭☹

My father was in the Pacific with the US Navy and was involved with 6 of the above ground Nuclear tests in the Mid 1950s. (Some of the biggest conducted by the USA.) Some covered his ship by accident with atomic fall out particles. He was in charge of decontamination.
He passed away in 2012 at 94 years old. He never suffered the effects of radiation.
Having my father as a living guide and an “Atomic Veteran,” I was educated with what I am to do.
I was a US Army Combat Medic. Emphasis in Nuclear Biological and Chemical warfare. Emphasis in decontamination and treatment in the field of a forward Aid Staton.
Foods stored in cans, closed airtight packages, (depending on proximity of the blast effect,) are safe to consume as long as the dust from fallout is wiped away before opening.
Same for water in sealed containers.
Fuels such as wood, gas fuel, coal which is covered with fallout should be avoided since it can cause the radioactive fallout to be placed back into the air.
Decontamination first flushing with non contaminated water is first rinsing away atomic particles.
Moving to a non contaminated area. A shower of soap and water is used as normal.
Disposing of any suspected clothes, shoes, and garments being contaminated in a plastic bag prior to the shower.
Wouldn't it be difficult to find something to wipe away the fallout particles, and/or water to wash it away?

Again, non contaminated water for drinking and decontamination. Water from sealed containers. Lawrence Livermore technical people drink, BEER, to rid the body of Tritium each day.. (So I been told by those who had worked there. Perhaps it was an excuse to drink Beer.)
Around 1987 I worked in a research lab and I did the monthly radiation surveys-we worked with lots of radioactive tracers like phosphorus, iodine, tritium, sulfur, etc. At the end of the survey I was checking my body to make certain I was not contaminated and the radiation meter went off when I checked my left wrist. The Seiko self illuminating watch I was wearing had radioactive material on its dial. I purchased the watch in the early 1980s. At that time Seiko used Promethium-147 on their watch dials. Promethium-147 is a weak Beta particle emitter and does not emit any Gamma radiation. The radiation did not penetrate through the watch back so my wrist was not being irradiated, but I still got rid of the watch.
I wore one of those watches in the 1980's. Now, at 60, all the hair in a ring around my wrist where I wore that watch is completely white. White, not grey.

Yup i found the radioiodine/c14 probe from a survey set detects the weak x rays from the tritium vials in the watches using them. The plutonium detector probe is even more insanely sensitive since the gamma is such low energy. It was an ADM radac set model 200. 🤓

To help counteract radioactive fallout, pick up some Potassium Iodide tablets. It helps with accidental and incidental ingestion of fallout (through eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin absorbed, etc.) Also, if you head to your bugout shelter, don't burn any wood that's been contaminated with radiation. I pray for your safety.

Had a vision two years ago that it would happen in 2025. It was World War 3 and ended in nuclear war by the end of 2030. Billions dead, very little survivors left.
You need to keep it shielded in a faraday cage as a NEMP will destroy the amplifier connected to the antenna. A cardboard box wraped on all sides with alum foil will work. You want the cardboard as an insulator, you cannot wrap the radio directly.

As for fallout on a greenhouse a simple water wash down system would clean the fallout from the glass of the greenhouse. Would be good to have smooth concrete all around the greenhouse to lead the contaminated water away from the structure.
In the US Navy in the early 80s, one of the excersice I had to do was plot fallout maps for various nuke yield explosions. At 18 years old I determined then that if the nukes fly, I wanted to be at ground zero of a blast. I still feel that way now.
I'd much rather be vaporized in a mili-second than survive the aftermath.

There are people who somehow claim you can make peace with brutal dictatorships like this. To make peace with them means surrendering to them and giving them everything they want.

Thank you, Lilly, for addressing this difficult issue. It is hard to face this. Every day I feel the same way and I've been prepping nearly 20 years. I bought an old, re-conditioned geiger counter about 12 years ago precisely because of my concern about EMP waves destroying electronics. Mine is very old fashioned with no electronics in it. I do have it in a Faraday cage just in case the circuit board gets fried. It measures higher doses of radiation in roentgens but I got another one that measures radiation in millisieverts because I wanted something I could use to check outside food sources for contamination at lower levels. Neither were cheap. The millisievert one is Russian made and cost me $500 but it is now over $1,000 for the same thing. The re-conditioned one from 1980 was around $350 from a company in Texas that will re-calibrate for you and are very reliable. Cresson Kearney's book also opened my eyes 20 years ago to the possibility of surviving radioactive fallout and it has been my go to book ever since.
i bought a civil defense one tears ago, cost 150 dollars to get calibrated, thats why i am cautious about buying a non govt issued one
All Geiger detectors are electronic by nature. The device consists of a gas filled tube with several hundred volts applied across it. Incoming radiation ionizes a gas atom which triggers an avalanche of ionizations due to the voltage. These flashes are counted by the electronic circuits in the detector. A proper Faraday cage should protect it though.
Sorry, but you cannot use a gieger to check for food contamination. issue is that the food (water in the food) can shield against alpha & beta radiation, and even a small amount of radioactive contaminents can be harmful. Food & water is tested using a HPGe (High performace Germanium) detector inside heavy shielded container (thick lead).
Yaeko negata steidel survived the Hiroshima, Nagasaki bombing. She wrote a book about women, mothering to stop war mongering. My wife changed her and I helped. She had flower shaped scars across her side. She told us all. On a mountain she saw fire and storm. Her daughter was/is president at ashram in Virginia ,diananda. Can not remember more, but there were survivors who lived to old age. Stay clean and wise. She taught us to eat very good organic food to get, stay well! My father had professional gigercounter whenever he traveled after military service. He found a glowing handle with it in our house.
A good source of testable emissions are radium glass, radium watches and gun sights and specific smoke alarms. All easy enough to find
Just make sure to protect your geiger counters from an airborne EMP strike prior to the groundburst strike. All your geigers will be useless if you don't. Protect your equipment!

Inverse square law: double the distance from the source and you will get 1/4 the dose of radiation. It’s literally a geometry calculation.

You can also use a camera sensor with a small bit of tape over it perhaps or in a perfectly dark room. If the black screen shows white pixel dots on occasion, your camera is getting hit be "radiation".
So most phones could be used as sensors in an emergency!

Rather than believing this or trying to practice it with a live radiation source, I think I will just follow Lily's advice and get a geiger counter.
@@penultimateh766 To be honest, if you have a situation where *you* need to buy a Geiger counter, it's already too late for you.
If you are buying one now, in preparation, you are wasting money vs the odds you are correct, and as said, if you are correct, there is nothing that knowing the radiation is there will do for you if you ever get to use it.
Current CCDs on phones probably wont show any easily visible activated pixels unless you are at ground zero. But it's about as useful as the above tester. If an event happens, you'll probably know about it by the explosion, before you get to put the batteries in your detector!

Belarus got the biggest fall out from Chernobyl. The results of it were a lot of women had breast cancer, children were born with disabilities and leukemia, in some areas people were limping. We were advised to go to radiation free countries on holiday to eat radiation free food. This helped as my radiation level after 1 month away dropped significantly. All this reminded me how much Belarusian people suffered through several wars, Chernobyl fall out and collapse of USSR. In 2020 protestors were tortured, raped and put to prison. God help Belarusian people and the rest of the world!

Many years ago I used to sell antique watches. Had a customer come in with his Geiger counter, an old mechanical one. The few watches with the radium hands and dial markers all made the counter move. If you really want some excitement open the watch so the dial is exposed. Then see what reading you get. Many people died during the early 1920s who were painting the dials and hands. They would put the tip of the brush in their mouths to get a finer point on the brush. Little did they know.
These were the watches and clocks that glowed in the dark. There was a movie and book on this.

The mantles for gas lamps using camping gas are normally fairly radioactive. There's also a part of old boilers that uses thorium in the metal and you can get a doserate off that. Ionising smoke detectors have Am-241 in them but DO NOT disassemble 1 to get the source - you WILL come off second best. However if you put 36 fully intact smoke detectors in a small box and put a detector in the middle of them you'll pick up a small doserate off that too.
Shielding: There is a term “halving thickness”. Or, what is the thickness of a given material behind which you can halve the radiation dose (gamma radiation).
What thickness of what material will shield you from halve the radiation dose?
14 millimeters of lead…or, 64 millimeters (2.5 inches) of concrete….or, 305 millimeters (12 inches) of soil.
Therefore, there is a radiologic event. You make your way to the basement of a commercial or industrial building (ideal). Your under a 305 millimeter (12 inch) concrete floor. You halving the dose 4 times…0.5 to 0.25 to 0.125 to 0.0625. Your getting 6.25 percent the dose (gamma) that you would otherwise get outside.
All that said, dust entering your shelter and you ingesting the dust is another issue. This is where beta radiation is the primary concern. Duct tape the door crevices or use plastic sheeting (drop cloth).

I bought an ex military geiger counter for £35 and it works fine. It is worth noting the military ones like mine can detect high levels as well as the low. Some geiger counters only go up to 1000.
Sorry Lilly, but Europe is in for a very rough winter. I am leaving San Diego, CA in 3 weeks for the mountains of North Carolina. I'm moving to an area that puts my back up against 6K foot of mountains. I have also been prepping for 10 years plus. I feel very confident I can survive most natural, political and whatever else comes my way. Get rural, get far from people, get more self reliant, get more off grid. It's gonna get really bad before it gets good again!
I recently heard that about 60% of the people in Nagasaki and Hiroshima survived the A-bombs that ultimately ended WWII.
My friend's grandmother survived the Nagasaki one.

Good preps Lilly. A Faraday cage would be an essential prep as well to protect your electronics including your Geiger counter from an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) or a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) event. A man made EMP could be caused by a high-altitude nuclear detonation that produces a brief burst of electromagnetic energy that can damage/disable any electrical device that isn't shielded. Cellphones, automobiles, trains, planes, and any part of the electrical power grid could be damaged and disabled. The area impacted by such an event could be regional or even global. The Carrington Event of 1859 was a naturally produced CME from the sun that damaged telegraph systems across Europe and North America.

Lilly, I worked in a nuclear power plant in America in the 1990s. Obviously we had to go through a lot of "rad" training. When we had to "wand" each other in class to check for "contamination" our instructor would stick a regular Coleman Gas Lantern mantel somewhere on a persons body and it emitted enough radiation to register on the Geiger counter. I don't know if they are made differently nowadays, but you might go to a sporting goods store and test them- they're like $4 at Walmart. Let me know if they are still ACTIVE!😀😀
Hi Lily! I bought a Geiger Counter about 6 mo ago to check my entire home/property, all appliances, computers, cell phones, outlets, and my hybrid car.... I also purchased a lot of faraday fabrics, cases for all our devices, and although the emissions are fairly low, I have always felt that when we are constantly bombarded, it is very unfortunate for our health. So even if we do not enter into a nuclear exchange, it is a good thing to have around. Thanks for all the info and helpful tips!

That watch is insane! I can't believe something like that was still floating around. It makes me want to test everything now!
Anything from that era with luminous features would be the same. The women factory workers in factories that made such things would lick their brushes that they used to apply the radium paint to the products, needless to say, many of them died from radiation poisoning. Even today many consumer products have radioactive material in them, for example, smoke detectors, some semi conductors and, wrist watches. I have several watches that have glow tubes for hour markers and the hands. Those glow markers use tritium to create the glow, which is guaranteed to last 25 years minimum. It is harmless though. In addition to watches that used radium in those early years, there were many decorative glass articles that used radium treated glass, it was seen as beneficial to health!
You can find them on eBay. There are probaby tens of thousands still existing.
Mostly harmless we had a half gallon jug of it when I was a kid. nearly every clock had its hands tipped in it so it's not rare to find them.
A Geiger counter is not going to help you - keep calm, throw it away and carry on

To put u at ease, I fix old watches as a hobby and I deal with old radium paint sometimes. What iv learned is that as long as u don't lick the paint or put it directly on ur skin for a long time, u should be fine. So as long as u don't have any conditions where u would be sensitive to it, then it is perfectly fine to handle that watch or wear it. Ya it probably isn't smart to wear it for years(like u said) but don't worry about trying to store that watch perfectly etc... O I had my neighbor check me one time after I had to use some old radium paint and he said I was fine. I just made sure to work with it in a ventilated area and wore gloves when I was painting the watch with it. So ya, don't worry about having that watch or how to store it as long as ur in normal health.
1 meter of dirt will block radioactive rays. Radioactive fallout is heavy and settles on surfaces.

I was in nuclear misses when in the service and I can tell you for a fact that we have been closer to a nuclear incident then we are now (early 70s) . If it comes down to a nuclear war no need to fret, even bacteria won't survive.
The Main Thing that will protect you is the amount of material between you and the source of the Radio Active Containments. So, you need to be in a Basement or Bunker with as much Concrete and Packed Earth above you as possible. I have a Proper Shelter that is Deep Underground but most people will not have access to anything like that. So, a Deep Basement is the best and easiest method. Good to see you have a Geiger Counter. I hope you have several Dosimeters that you can wear when you have to leave your Temporary Shelter. Good Luck Lilly.

I had a Civil Defense survey meter when I was a teenager. I found it interesting and useful to check background radiation. I did not then know that I was a "downwinder" of the Nevada nuclear testing; background radiation was about 19 counts per minute or second I don't remember, but when I tried it in Hawaii it was only 3.
Also be aware most radiation patterns travel on the wind to the northeast, unless you are on a coast. Coastal areas are actually safest.

I measured my fluorescent watch when I was in the French army in 1973 with a Geiger counter, the needle moved. After several years on the wrist, we can get sick. Thank you for your video. Goodbye, kisses.
Radioactive paint was used a lot on WW2 allied warplanes instruments to allow the crew to read them without lights. These were painted in the factories almost exclusively by women (in the UK at least, as women had replaced men in factory jobs_. They had a habit of licking the tip of the paintbrushes to get a fine tip to paint the small parts on these instruments, leading to a large number of mouth cancers several years later. Lesson learned - don't lick radioactive paint !
A lot of the old smoke detectors contained small amount of radioactive material, put your geiger counter near your smoke detector and check it.
Those used Americium-241 which is an alpha emitter. The source was shielded so unless you broke it open (I wouldn't) I doubt you'd be able to detect anything.

I worked in a large metal scrap yard for a long time and we had radioactive loads come in all the time they just buried it in the fields but some gets through so its all around us already in new steel products.
Excellent video. If you do use a respirator to prevent ingesting radioactive fallout, be sure to check the filters for a buildup of radioactive material.
I had a Geiger counter for ages and a key chain nuke alert from Texas but you can't get the mini nuke alerts in Europe anymore.

If you should ever have fallout from a nuclear explosion, a Geiger counter won't be of much use. At the high radiation rates you will experience, the voltage across the tube falls and the tube doesn't count properly, in effect it is saturated. An ionisation counter is what civil defence people use.
a tidbit....steel mined and made before 1945 is often sold at premium prices for medical test equipment because after 1945 when atomic bombs were set off the whole world experienced a slight contamination so that now there is higher background radiation.
Lilly, it’s good to let everyone know how useful a Geiger counter can be. Radiation is invisible and at high levels, extremely dangerous. A Geiger counter will also let you know when radiation levels decline and it’s safe to emerge from cover and resume more normal activities. You can also check that clothing, food and water are not contaminated. I do have one, but when you have only one of something, it’s good to acquire a backup even though good ones can be expensive. I used the instructions, from Nuclear War Survival Skills, to assemble a dosimeter from aluminum foil and a tomato sauce can. Not sure if it would work but a fun project. During the early 1970's Red China was performing open air testing of nuclear weapons, after one test we caught fallout from China and the dairy farmers had to dump milk, 50 years later we are still here. I know for a fact the 1950s and 60s the Civil Defense medical kits contained a huge bottle of diazepam (Valium) after finding one in an abandoned CD shelter in Death Valley.
There's a CZcams video showing someone testing the KFM he made using a dental X-Ray machine. It worked!
@@marygallagher3428 I picked up twelve CD V-742 dosimeters and Model CD V-750 Model 6 charger used to charge and zero the dosimeters years back. Of the 12 V-742s 8 still hold a charge and appear to be functional. There is even a service (KI4U, Inc.) on Ebay that uses original Civil Defense test equipment to service and calibrate Civil Defense Radiation detection gear.

what you really want are throw away coveralls like tyvek to rid of the dust. Painters coveralls. This way you dont throw away clothing so much.
Apple pectin works at detoxing radiation in the body. Use one Tbsp with a little water. Mix into a paste. One or two times a day.
