This Zelda means so much to me ;-; played it when I was 11 and i had such a blast never really minded the controls. After that I started playing it with my dad cause the doctor recommended him playing videogames so he healed from his brain surgery faster we played a little but he died a year after without going that far in the game but it was one of the best experiences i had with him

definitely insane
I did the same lol
wait what are we supposed to do?
SAME
I found this weird, cause moving L felt second-nature to me, and not inconvenient at all.
Skyward Sword had a unique distance rendering system. Farther objects become soft round pixilations, giving a feeling of Impressionism. The art style choice fits that rendering system. They actually worked on the quality of it in the HD version.
A lot of people never noticed the Impressionism art style, but that's what gave Skyword Sword it's unique feel and soft, chill vibes.
Wood: âCan I have the legend of Zelda?â
Employee: âYou are the legend of Zelda.â
NooOooOO ITS ACTUALLY LINK

@@delectableangel1986 I originally accidentally said the exact same thing except for âCan I have Zeldaâ and then the employee said âYou are Zeldaâ but he was actually link
@@averymixon1848 Link is the Legend
The art style is inspired by Impressionism. They've even applied it to depth of field in a mini bokeh kinda way. Nintendo is pretty good at using art style to cover up their consoles' weaknesses, which help the games' graphics hold up pretty well in the future.
Yes exactly I couldnât tell if he was saying the water color thing sarcastically because itâs supposed be be exactly that
Wind Waker will exist as a graphically good game even if we get to prefect graphics. We can only chase hyper graphics so far, in the end it is better to make a game look good and play better then make a game look better and play good. One dies out the other persists.

This was the first zelda game I ever got. Never beat it. Now I'm steam rolling through the game with no guides except for one puzzle so far and I'm absolutely loving it! It's such a huge nostalgia trip and since I never finished it, most of the game is still fresh to me. I love it!
Have you played botw? Just curious
@@YungPop yeah, I love it too (still haven't finished the dlc, but that's just because I'm working through my ever growing back log of games lol)
@@powerrangerturbo1 Im currently playing botw and its my first Zelda game. (Played a little of a link between worlds but whatever). I love it and Im so hooked I was maybe thinking about getting skyword sword afterwards.
Skyward sword is obviously gonna be different (very linear if you didn't know), but the story is amazing and some of the bosses are really fun and the finale is just *chefs kiss*
@@YungPop I started with Botw too (played link to the past first but didnât get that far) and then got skyward sword. Honestly I donât know who wouldnât recommend it all zelda games are masterpieces
I re-played Skyward Sword on the Wii more recently of this year before this release. The motion controls on the Switch were way more smooth and enjoyable, more convenient also with the calibration by just pressing Y. I didn't like using button controls much to be honest but was great to have that option.
For me the joy cons kept having to be recentered. Weirdly enough I had a smoother experience on the Wii, apparently the sensor bar helps alot with calibration so that might be why
@@VictoryReviews Maybe had to re-sync joycons or place the Switch a certain way to reduce it maybe? Not sure. But at least its more convenient to re-calibrate it on the Switch
This is literally insane the Wii works so well for after replaying earlier this year
I like having the ability to reset the gyro. I like resseting the gyro center way higher to make bomb rolling easier and in a second return it back to normal. While it takes a while to get used to, it is so convenient once you get used to it.
You can calibrate the wii one by just pressing down
I never had a single problem with the motion controls. Pressing Y didn't bother me then again it might just be because I didn't move much when playing
I never had any issues either it just makes me wonder if some people just do not know how to work motion controls
@@ewoutoffereins3380 I think some people forget to reset them. Also they have changed them slightly from the Wii one so it may be throwing people's muscle memory off
@@fleckeld7535 exactly. I havent seen his streams, only the small portions on this video but Im screaming in my head "calibrate"
and plus the more u play u get used to it and pressing y helps
Motion controls feel cooler, button controls feel more comfortable
I had no issues with the motion controls, I just ended up pushing Y like a couple thousand times while playing :)
Exactly.
I don't even need to hit Y that often but I'm finding myself doing it "just in case" a lot :D
That's the issue I had with the original so I went for button controls
i just got into a habit of pressing Y every time i pulled out my sword or every time i pulled out anything i had to aim with. i really love motion controls
I'm right there with ya, I thought the motion controls were way more on point just had to hover over that Y button. A lot better than pausing and laying the controller face down to recalibrate.
Gotta say, that ending with you talking about the time line gave be chills. Well done
I think this is an experience that will vary depending on the player, cause my experience was pretty smooth. Although, it should be mentioned that I used the y-button reset a lot.
Yeah same, I switched to BotW after playing SS for some time and I kept using y lol
yeah for this game Y is your best friend
Best intro, I just finished playing Skyward Sword myself and really enjoyed the HD version of the game - took a while to get used to the button control but after that it was totally fine, I bought the zelda amiibo and didn't even use it once
Lol
Lol! I hear you on the amiibo. It's really not needed at all except for maybe speedrunners wanting to save like 3 seconds instead of taking 3 seconds to go to a statue. My neighbor was all psyched about it thinking you could fast travel whenever and wherever you wanted. I wrote a NFC tag for him of the loftwing amiibo so he knows it doesn't work like that but he still likes the function of it.
I didnât even bother to buy the amibo
@@twilightwild1083 I like it just for collecting purposes cuz I'm a die hard LoZ fan, but if you don't want it for a collection, you're not missing out on anything special with it. Only concern is if it gives you exclusive items/clothes in BotW 2 when that comes out. That would piss off a lot of people. I recommend just buying some NFC tags and writing your own amiibos. Ninten-dough are money grabbing jerks so fuggem.
Everything is better when you realize holding the joy con flat is the intended way to give you the best accuracy and it actually works just fine
âMore confused than a chameleon in a bag of skittles.â
Much pain. Proper reference about the gyro controls đč
A fine line đđŒ
THis quote earned him a sub from me I laughed so hard.
I hear people say they didn't like the world below the clouds because it was too linear. But I remember the idea was to take some of the parts people love about dungeons and bring it to the over world. Think about the volcano area you had to figure out how to make your way a certain location. It wasn't a direct path. You had find those mitts to dig around in the ground. Or fight a mini boss to get past a bridge over the lava. The time stones in the desert area were a lot like dungeon puzzles.
I found that the orientation of the controller itself was the most important part.
Stuff like flying reacts extremely well with very minor movements. Large movements completely throw it off
Controlling the Loftwing with motion controls reminded me of BOTW gyro shrines đ„”
Yeah
The only difference is Botw gyro shrines are annoying and hard, while flying a loftwing is easy and simple.
Ewwwwww
Motion controls for flying on skyward sword started out being awful but I got used to it over time. Almost at the end of the game and at this point it's no problem now.
The loftwing was hard for like 3 minutes until I got the hang of it and it became super easy. Though I will say that I switch to button-only controls for the skydiving minigame. This is my first time playing the game and I'm LOVING IT. I think I like it better than BotW since there's an actual narrative.
The intro is the best thing Iâve ever seen well done

The way you thought about botw 2 being a part of the cycle is genius and I never wouldâve thought of that and now Iâm even more excited about the sequel. That actually makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. Anyway great vid
I had the exact opposite experience to BeatEmUps. I have always been a motion control hater, but decided to try this game because I need more Zelda in my life. Out of curiosity I started out my adventure using motion controls just to see âhow they feltâ. But my initial idea was using button controls as my main way of playing. Finally the motion controls stuck with me and I quite liked them. I had basically zero of the frustrations in this vid. (Except flying the loft wing for the first time as I didnât understand the wing flap mechanic. lol)
I also only used motion controls (except i flew with buttons) and i was totally find you just have to reset gyro by pressing Y when its in a funky position
Exactly, after a while of launching the game, I couldn't emulate it due to the movement control. Total frustration! Today I have a Switch and a few days ago I acquired the title never played before, I was outraged by the mapping of the buttons because to rotate the camera you have to hold a button and not the mapping option to change it. I ended up giving the motion controls a try and was surprised by how intuitive they are and how much I would miss out if I just played with the buttons.
âIs this switch? No this is Xbox.â Love itđ

14:52 yes BOTW is currently the end of the timeline. If there's a game older than the Skyward Sword era, then the Character we controlling is Hylia herself not Link and the Boss is Demise not Ganon.

Itâs so easy pressing Y to recenter. Itâs way easier than Z target to recenter the camera or for every fight lmao People who hate recentering are weird to me. âDoing it a lotâ isnât bad either. You press Z target the entire game, so just press Y too. Itâs even easier than that lmao

I got used to the motion controls after the first boss, and after that, it feels like a classic zelda game, puzzles, and motion controls added to the puzzle mechanics, including fighting monsters with specific directions. Also I got full control of my loftwing and I wished we could fly in botw2 xD Definitely worth playing for anyone who haven't played it before on the wii.
For the theory at the end, Urbosa confirms that BotW takes place after OoT. This is when Vah Naboris starts taking aim at Hyrule Castle.

Personally, speaking as a left-handed fan of the Zelda series, I don't think this game was judged harshly enough.
Phantom Hourglass was good, i loved that game.

Yeah honestly really enjoyed it when I was younger. I remember going back and replaying it !
Same. It was my first Zelda game though, so maybe Iâm biasedđ
@@alyssac5130 it's a good game to have a bias tho.
In my case it wasn't my first Zelda, but it was a good game, it was real fun in the DS with its gameplay
And here I am holding down L the whole time! Regardless of how you play it, for a game I've never played, I'm really enjoying it.
Iâve been playing on my pro controller and the button controls feel really good. The gyro sensor is more manageable and the integration with the button controls is seamless. The L to look is pretty comfy, too. Optimal route imo!
The motion controls are actually one of the funnest parts of the game! ...once you understand it, that is. Flying, swimming, rolling bombs and shooting arrows all become super fun! đđđ
I don't understand how people fail so hard at using the motion controls. It's not hard and the button controls are much worse imo
@Dwayne D One of the things i really love about this game is that combat actually requires learning and practice and its not just clicking a button until the enemy dies
@@arctik2596 yeah i feel like the motion controls are really fun to use and it feels like you remove a lot of character from the game when you play with the buttons.
The way you finished the video with the theory about SS and BOTW was simply amazing. Awesome video, as always đđđŒ
with casual majora mask theory
Great video I was so happy for this hd release because back in the day I physically couldn't play the wii the motion controls were darn near impossible for me I'm still surprised I've been spoiler free for all this time and I can't wait to see what Nintendo has in store for Zelda
Great review and glad you enjoyed the game! I kept playing with the motion controls for a few hours in the game to get better at them, and I did, so Iâm used to them, they are easy, and enjoyed the moments of swords fighting and small moments like pulling the master sword out of the ground and jumping in the air to slam down my blade on an enemy. I had to reset the calibration with the tap of the button every once in a while, but I got used to doing it like instinct.
Nintendo literally intended for it to look like watercolor. I remember reading about it during the release of the Wii version
I swear, that shot of zelda coming really close to link still gives me goosebumps all those years later
Fun fact, you dont have to point at the screen then press Y to calibrate you can do it pointing anywhere
Its really useful when you just want to get into a more comfortable position, to just press Y resting your hand and you can just use small rotations to make the slashes
i didnât have a big issue with the motion controls tbh because you could just press y at any time to recalibrate it
Iâve actually been enjoying the motion controls for the most part. Resetting the gyro every couple minutes quickly just became a habit for me.
The motion controls were the only way I could enjoy the game.
Wood just sucks at using them. Did you see how awful he was at flying? âNo itâs not me, itâs the controls that are bad.â

This Zelda has a good place in my heart :( I was 12 when I played it with my Mom and it was my first Zelda that got me into the franchise! Just had my first play through a few weeks ago. The first few hours were brutal for me. Between the constant stops in action for dialogue and learning the controls I had to push myself to keep playing. By the end of the game itâs one of my favorites in the series.

Gotta be honest, even despite needing to reset sometimes, I feel like you werenât using the motion very good in your demonstrations. Iâm not that surprised it wasnât working. The motion controls need to be reset more because of course it doesnât have a sensor, but work more accurate and fast when itâs centered correctly.
Aim your sword slowly and then swing. Donât make big crazy movements when flying or swimming. Move slowly back and forth on tightropes (you can run on them btw). And press reset whenever youâre about to use motion controls. Just get used to pressing it preemptively, especially if youâve changed your position. You donât even have to point at the screen, recenter button will recenter to whatever your current position is so you can still be pretty comfortable in whatever spot youâre in. Seriously, speed runners are still playing the game the exact same way they did on Wii with no noticeable difference or drop in quality with the controls, other than pressing recenter sometimes. Which is easier than pressing Z target for every fight.
Still, Iâm glad you were able to enjoy it with buttons. Thatâs why itâs great to have the option.
Yeah I really liked motion I think itâs more of flick your wrist then using your whole arm because when you use your whole arm it makes it register incorrectly

I totally agree on the classic zelda feel! Gave me ocarina-nostalgia when playing some of the puzzles in the dungeons. I also loved all the things they added in skyward like the items and sailcloth that you mentioned. Underrated and overlooked game for sure!
Geez that montage of the motion controls was something else. They work great and they never have to be 'pointed' at the screen...its gyro. The calibration can jump around a bit, but a simple press of Y while not spazzing your whole body will do wonders. Oh Wood ya goof.
And he's moving the controller so much while flying the loftwing, but all it needs is to be tilted a little bit. If you tilt or move it too much it will register as tilting in the opposite direction.

@@kennycarter5682 I respect the decision and his opinion, I only really have a problem with the fact that he didn't even try to learn the controls, but more so expected them to conform to what he wants to do/what he thinks he's doing with his motions. Normally I wouldn't care, but he also then presents it as if the motion controls are a mess objectively, when in reality the issue lied with him either not being precise enough or not learning how recentering worked.
Regardless though, I can understand why he was frustrated and switched, I just don't particularly like how he raked the motion controls over the coals despite never actually trying to learn and adapt to them.
@@DragonEdge10 Yeah exactly, his entire argument boils down to âitâs too hard to press Yâ which is just not a real argument lol.
Going back and playing Skyward Sword you notice all the little gameplay mechanics brought over into Breath of the Wild, like the stamina gage, collecting items to use in item upgrading, multiple different shields and swords, using motion controls to solve puzzles, and sail cloth that would become a paraglider.
I've said for awhile that a sensor bar to help coordinate the gyro would be really nice. Not sure how well that would work together, but I know they would need to upgrade the joycons for it to be compatible with the sensor bar. It seems like both gyro and senior bar working together would work better, but maybe I'm an idiot.
Its nice when you can watch a review about gameplay and quality of life stuff, doesnt hurt that theres comedy in there too. I laugh so much and get a good review, favorite channel.
When I played the bird race thingy I didn't read the tutorial all the way through, so I didn't know that you could shake the joy-con to flap, so I did the entire race without flapping.

Although I had less problems with the motion controls than you did, I'm fine with them. Although from the clips it's apparent you have a very different . . . technique.
From my playing I learned small but quick movements work best. Before I was getting both my wrists and elbows strained but after enduring for hours I found a synergy that feels so natural neither gets strained that I can play for long periods of time with 0 straining.
Skyword Sword is best for the patient and esperimentative
Here after a few months to say I finally got around to playing the skyward sword port I'm part of the minority that played 99% of it with motion controls and totally enjoyed it! đ
We are old Wood! I was born in 91. Just think of all the console generations in our lifetime...
Old being born in 91 đ đ đ. I must be ancient I was born in 68 đ đ đ
@@robertw31968 I mean everything is relative. My dad was born in 48... Wood is one year older than me so I'm relating to him feeling old. Obviously we aren't old compared to people 20 to 40 years older then us but there are a lot of people watching this that were born well after us...
I have to say, a little bit in depth as to why the Wii Remote had better motion in comparison to the Switchâs version, is due to there being 3 methods of keeping track of where the remote is, The Infrared of The Wii Sensor Bar, The Wii Remoteâs internal gyroscope, and the secondary gyroscope from the Wii Motion Plus Accessory.
Lol I had to look up that song from Rebecca black cause I couldn't remember it đ€Ł the moment I hit play I immediately remembered lol but then realized you were playing the instrumental version in the background during that whole section of the video lol. Love watching your videos Wood! Cheers!
It is important to point out - if the motion control worked really well, like, perfect every time, skyward sword would be one of the best Zelda games. If the switch had an optional control set up, that was like 500% more accurate than the Wii, it would be amazing
Objectively the most important lesson learned from this video is that Wood pronounces the letter H as âhay-tchâ instead of âay-tch.â
thatâs how we say it in australia lol :p
That's how I say it hay-tch as well.
You have the split pad or even of you have a cheapo wireless controller with 2 buttons behind the controller, you can map the left bumper to be the back left and run on the back right so you can just grip it slightly harder to use camera or to sprint.
The link impersonation was spot on!! đ€Łđđ» Also, Groose DEFINITELY always reminded me of Biff as well. Funny Iâm obviously not the only one. đđ»
The art style was supposed to look like a painting :) And this is my favorite Zelda after Breath of the Wild. I didnât have any problems with the motion controls. I recenter often though cuz thereâs no bar. I really donât like the buttons. Maybe I just have to use them more but itâs super difficult for me and took me longer to do simple things. I also play like how I did on the Wii and press the button the recenter the camera often.
I used my GameStop points to only pay $40 for this game đ I didnât want to pay $60 for a remaster.
Bruh... I don't have any GameStop points I gotta pay full price for my favorite Zelda game I'm maulding and those really fkn cool joy cons dammit why everything gotta cost money?
SSHD is a way better, more polished version of the original, but despite being without a doubt, the definitive edition of the game, it still shouldn't be $60.
So does 3D All Stars and half of the Wii U ports that add a bit of content.
I'm begging them to re-release the hd Zelda ports from the Wii u, and I'd pay $60 each for them again, no joke, a portable twilight princess would be amazing
Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 are the only ports that I can justify spending $60 on. I bought some of the others, but I always regretted buying them when I couldâve just played the Wii U version. (And 3D All Stars, but only because I never played Sunshine and my copy of Galaxy stopped working) Also, on Amazon you can get Skyward Sword HD for $50, the same price as Wind Waker HD.
Love your costum and the video! Genious!
In the video there is this really sweet remix for skyward sword's main theme, does anyone know its origin? You can hear it around 13:25 in the video and I can't find it in the description.
watching you try to play it w the motion controls was hilarious lol i couldn't stop laughing, it sounds like it would've worked better for you with voice controls!!!
I actually liked both control scemes. When i used motion controls I got used to hitting y it became second nature and when I used button controls and then switch back to motion I was still holding down the l forgetting im using motion controls. For me it became muscle memory with these things.
Can't believe you did sneak 8 bit Friday so brilliantly there.
I actually like to motion controls over the button controls. The camera not moving until you hit a button or hold one down just bothers me too much. Itâs a bit annoying to have to reset the gyro so often, but itâs not any worse than having to reset the camera all the time either. I never got to play this Zelda because I never had a Wii, I like this story line and characters quite a bit so far.
