Special Containment Procedures: Following the recent investigations of Dr. Robert Montauk, no action is currently needed to contain SCP-001. It is functionally self-containing, and any Foundation interference may harm or alter its containment irreversibly.
No Foundation personnel are to engage with any new matters related to SCP-001, with the exception of related anomalies already in Foundation containment.
Description: SCP-001 is an entity ordinarily referred to as the Scarlet King. SCP-001 is currently located in several alternate dimensions simultaneously, and is unable to enter into the prime dimension. However, it is believed to have been repeatedly attempting entry for a period of several thousand under 300 years. SCP-001's physical, mental and conceptual properties are unknown to the Foundation; nevertheless, it continues to assert a strong influence on a number of individuals and events within the prime dimension.

If I am understanding this correctly, the Scarlet King manifests in all times when men lose meaning in their own freedom. He comes in, raping and enslaving, taking away the agency that men treated as a thing for naught, a thing to be tossed aside in favor of standardization of societal roles.
The law of blood is to make men suffer for his own enjoyment. The law of concrete is to topple and reduce to ash man’s creation, an expression of their will and agency. Lastly, the law of howling, when mankind howls because of lost sense of meaning, he comes to answer the call, to give them alternative meaning, to make them suffer for his pleasure.
The cruelty of the Scarlet King has an ironic effect. As Arcturus Mengsk, a character from Star Craft, poetically stated, “A man does not truly know himself until you take his freedom away,” Humanity in reaction to the blight of the Scarlet King, and through the loss of his self-enslavement, it being destroyed by the coming of the Scarlet King, they rise up in rebellion, unified by an unquenchable thrist for meaning discovered by their own agency, and not put upon them by some malevolent force. When man stops howling for his own lost sense of meaning, and instead begin howling in hatred of slavery and the Scarlet King, then the King himself begins to lose power, and he and his followers are then crushed, but only for a time.
I thing I find ironic about all this entire story is how people howl over the meaninglessness of their lives and don’t seem to think that it is because they are in service to a “Scarlet King.” After all, seeing the debauchery taking place within the ruling class, calling itself “High Society,” while it actively works to shrink the power of their subordinates, how is it that one can come to the conclusion that their entrapped situation isn’t the cunning work of a devil?

I mean that's sort of a theme throughout human history, it's also the basis of cognitive dissonance in many ways due to how the ego becomes dependent on certain factor's and will actively try to prevent it's own destruction, which leads to the defensive behaviour many people exhibit when they are confronted with facts they cannot reconcile with their current assumptions.
If you think about the worst excesses of religion or politics, it's usually a variation on this same theme at the core. People want to find some meaning or purpose in life, and in the absence of the ability to reason at a higher level, or if they have been indoctrinated or brought up in an environment that repeatedly reinforced their "purpose" from a young age, they will continue onwards with their path even if it is obviously horrific and justify this to themselves in various ways.
The Nazi's, for example, came to power because Hitler exploited the state of the German people, who had been disenfranchised and felt purposeless in the wake of WW1, by giving them a purpose, an enemy, and thus justification, no matter how immoral or flimsy, to act in the way they did.
Talk to any Christian about their beliefs and the answer will boil down to "I wish to believe my life has purpose and my belief in my God provides this" even if they know it to be irrational. I've seen a loss of faith and the impact it has on the psyche, and it's very close, if not exactly identical, to ego death. It might be a good thing in the long run, but to take that first step from believing you have a purpose, that your life has meaning, is an extremely difficult one.

@@chillax319 There's an scp about 2pac helping the foundation by giving info about killers and dangerous and non dangerous scps (through music in a CD) so that foundation agents can go stop the killers and contain the scps. In the scp universe, it's apparently true that pac before his death was an scp who could be equal to or stronger than the scarlet king. (Him doing a music career was apparently just a holiday from kicking the Kings butt, stopping him from getting to earth)
The quote comes from an interview he did while high and while to normal listeners it may seem that he's talking nonsense, those who know about the scarlet king know pac is reassuring humanity that he's got our backs and will send the scarlet king running like a little bitch if he comes to earth.
In short, 2pac won't let the scarlet king anywhere near earth or humanity.

The second read-through is way crazy. He's been dropping clues and information the whole time the reader (and Montauk) misses. Really well crafted, even if it made too much technically understandable.

As a personal member of the ethics commitee, I can confirm we have vouched for the relaxion of the strain on the mental health of the foundation members. We advised to add relaxation events and recreation facilities to all sites in order to create a friendlier environment for all staff to work in. A part of this was to ensure all staff members take philosophical classes in order to become used to the inconsistency and psychological fortitude required in order to understand certain SCPs. This would help the mental well being of all facility members. When this idea was proposed before the 05-council, they responded with the following text, "LMFAO! By classifying the Scarlet King, you bring him into existence, strengthening him. It’s not that you can’t classify him, it’s that classifying him gives him form. But I think it is less to do with the act of classification and more to do with the psychology of the people classifying. Taking the wonder and meaning out of the world, making it mundane and boring, creates an entrapping situation. Everyone looks at their own lives apathetically and lose meaning in existing. This is the law of howling. When people howl because of a meaningless existence, he answers the call. In other words, in learning and discovering the world, we should not take it for granted or we will lose sight of ourselves in the process.

What's amazing about the Scarlet King is how it has manifested over the years of people digging into the original SCP-231 and later SCP-2317. The question kept being asked, demanded of who it was. Now we have a fully fleged SCP-001 entry that demonstrates how our curiosity and classification has given birth to a true Scarlet King.

I just want to mention how convincing the terror in Montauk's voice is when he's describing what the Scarlet King is. That shiver in his voice as he tries to control himself and contain his fear adds so much gravity to the reveal.
I've literally listen to this 5 times already. The reason? Because i absolutely love the voice acting. Just fantastic! Plus, the whole thing is very well written and the the concept is very fascinating as well. Absolutely love this one.

@@HedonisticHalfling The Scarlet King is not a God, or a monster, or a physical being of any kind. At least not at first- he was a feeling, the innate knowledge that a world of Gods and devils and magic ruled over us.

The world has always been brutal, but back then it was more so. Our lives and societies were governed by faith, superstitions, prejudices, fear and the need to survive. And that was good. That was right. This remorseless world of slaughter, fear and magics was the way the world was always supposed to be.
"...to remind the denizens of this world that it is not good. It is cruel and hateful. and that is good. That is right."
But then came modernity in its various forms. Those who sought to understand the world and manipulate it for their own ends, to enlighten humanity and push back the darkness. As time went, our gods and fairies and spirits were replaced with explanations of natural phenomenon, an understanding of physics, faith in science, and the arrival of the SCP Foundation to lock away anything that didn't fit into their philosophy of Enlightenment rationale. And something didn't like that.

In time, the Old World was lost to us. The magic of the world was reduced to weather patterns and odd natural phenomenon. Our gods were not divine beasts of holy authority, they were simply creatures we did not fully understand. Even the simple notion of good and evil was removed and plastered over with a dull, meaningless grey. And in that sterile grey, we began to lose ourselves to it. We no longer fight for each day in a struggle to survive and prosper, we shamble to daily jobs that exist solely to maintain the existence of the system. We lost our purpose and meaning, the 'divine spark' that gives us inherent value, and it was replaced with hollow humanism and empty smiles telling us 'progress is good, this is what we should all strive for.' But there was still in us all a desperate need for authenticity, for purpose, for wonder, in a world that seeks to tell us it's all subjective or irrelevant.
And in that repugnant, arrogant rejection of what was right, The Scarlet King, previously just an innate notion on to how the world worked, was given form. He was furious at what modernity and the Foundation had done to the world- HIS world- and in the end could only destroy everything. He would reset the world back to its original point, ushering in an era of terror and violence unlike any seen before. And in that hellish nightmare reality, we would understand our purpose, we would know the difference between good and evil, and we would look up to the sky for our Gods and despair. And that is right.

The Scarlet King is not a deity. He is the idea that humanity's path of enlightenment thinking and scientific progress is wrong. An idea transformed into modernity's destruction by modernity's strain on our own minds. And he is truly terrifying.

TBH, the Scarlet King being the REAL 001 is my favorite interpretation and it’s kinda weird that it barely gets covered.

The 9 Children that can delete anything from existence (Ouroboros Cycle)

The reason why the Foundation is making the King stronger is down to the fact that the King is an idea. Ideas can't be destroyed. They can only either be denied or embraced, but once an idea is had it is forever there. The more the foundation tries to understand, categorize, and define the Scarlet King the more powerful he becomes, because, when you try to understand, define, and categorize an idea, it only grows more. The more you think about an idea the bigger that idea becomes, and so is the same with trying to define it. The more you understand, the more powerful it becomes.
However one could also say that if he/it is a being molded by imagination how many people would it take for the scarlet king to be turned into nothing but a sniveling child

It was always funny to me looking at the western world, how you squabble around in your petty attempts at defining the world to your will of rationality and reason. The Great French revolution and it's consequences have been a disaster for the humanity. Everything that is happening to the West now is due to this. And the West is trying to impose it's values as universal and humanitarian.

The thing I love about SCP is that something as eldritch as the Scarlet King can range from:
An eldritch being older than the universe itself that, if it ever crosses over into our universe has the high likelihood to destroy reality as we know it
Or some fan fiction by a European explorer that rewrote a nation’s history
What an excellent story. Chilling. Reminiscent of a Warhammer 40k deity/morality code mixed with the cosmic horror and philosophical nihilistic absurdity of Cthulhu and a dash of the number 19 a la King and Rocco’s immortal basilisk. This story is a triumph. Lovecraft would be proud. So, so well-crafted. Excellent voice acting. Literally all feature film material. Hell yeah.

The thing that for me is the most interesting about this SCP is that in a sense it it’s self is an expression of the king since somebody in our world of modernity wrote this. Maybe it was meant as a joke or as a fun project or maybe even a philosophical exploration of the authors feelings. In any case it expresses the third law of the scarlet king perfectly a howling a raging against the chains of day-to-day life. As I said it might just have been a fun project and maybe I am a overthinking fool but I believe that the three laws of the king touch upon something real that every human has experienced at some point in the 21st-century. Whether it is a person born with almost nothing slaving away for others benefits or a well liked and respected gifted individual who even with all their gifts might still feel chained to societal norms regulations and patterns of behavior. Don’t get me wrong for most of the time I truly enjoy our enlightenment each with all the comforts wonders and delights that our time has to offer but sometimes late at night or when I am sitting in my classroom in the back of my mind I feel a desire for simpler times which I know will never come again and that as far as I understand it is what the howling is meant to represent. Anyway sorry for going on a rant like some over educated know it all just wanted to share my personal thoughts and to hopefully see some interesting responses if people feel like arguing.

My theory is, the scarlet king well its like a bit of him is in all of us, the animal. The rebellion against being more civil. The jailer of its own prison. It was a concept A ideal a collective irideemable awknowledgement of change and a reflection of what we had lost hence the howling the screaming. The king is the hopeless sadness the desire for blood the old ways the simple ways. But the rage in knowing that will never return. The king does not hate but it remembers and it knows in the end everything crumbles.
The king made us the guiding rage, pain, cruelty. The innovation via destruction. The king made us as surely as in the end we made him and in the end the king knows it has created itself too and ultimately its own end. It is not hatred just the cold cruelty of inevitability. Its the manifestation of the animal and the loss the animal in humanity, the rage of loss.
Thats what I got from this anyway, sorry for my ramble, this is a well writen SCP and the writer certainly was onto something about the nature of humanity.

Yes, the piece wouldn't resonate with any of us if wasn't relevant to our time.
Nietzsche had the idea that in predmodernity, our wills, drives, desire, had direct contact and play in nature, when our environment was nature. Now, our environment is manmade, our environment is human society. All our different wills must now be restrained to exist in modernity, to be civil; and to do so, requires that we act tyrannically within ourselves, that we shackle and cage these different desires.
It did not make sense to met at first why, in the story, people would be so willing to worship the red king and rejoice in their own servility. But really, the red King is each person's OWN TYRANT, a form of their own (super)ego. It is both only needed BECAUSE of modernity (to restrain the other internal wills), but is also now the most powerful and salient aspect of our RAW selves (it is the cork in bottle that actually touches the outside air).
You know, when to think of it... This entry scares the everliving shit out of me because of how precise and scientific the explanations are in each part. Makes me want to believe in it as well if I'm honest.
This is the 4th time I've listened through this entry and so far this is one of my favourites of all time.

I just read your article for a bit of context cause everyones been spamming 'Tupac has our back' and was confused. Your article was really interesting but once I reached the end and read the memorandum piece man, it was so good. It hit like a ton of bricks and sent my mind racing at the possibilities. I know its just one article but it struck that, "I need to know more!" trigger. I love that balance to the lore of the King. It blends so nicely with the ideas of the Scarlett King, that he's desperate to maintain this image of dominance. Such good writing.

That monolog Montauk gives towards the end (the one that ends with "I am a doctor. I am a child"), it was seriously heavy. I've felt that turmoil before, felt my shattered world slip through my fingers as the foundation 'neath my feet fell away. Not the weight of grief, or the stab of loss, or the gift of guilt... none of those hold a candle to having one of your absolute truths challenged and to find it wanting. Imagine for me if you will, that tomorrow isnpite of all your faith the sun simply did not rise. That in spite of the facts you know, and in the face of all the laws of nature, the sun simply decided it was taking the day off. What would you do? What would you think? Truly put yourself in those shoes for a moment.
You know it was supposed to rise, and yet it didn't, but perhaps it shouldn't have yet... but it's 3pm.... but it's come up every day ever... except today. And so on. That is the level of turmoil I'm talking about, and it's... an experience?

so wait, the scarlet king is basically an info hazard that feeds off the classification that is created to understand him. Which then brings him to reality, giving him power. This version of the scarlet king is a lot scarier than his other versions when you think about it. We basically gave him the power to become the thing we truly fear.

But what is truly effective is meaning and intent to fuel that emotion.

I think the procedure functions under the same principle as the contaiment procedure for that Deer god that warps people into columns. It's more about the belief around it than the procedure itself. As long as people believe something horrible is being done, it works.

I love how he keeps mentioning 110-montauk as something downright disgusting. When in reality it’s fabricated to create fear. Super cool how they follow that detail in this.
What’s even cooler is that Dr. Montauk keeps up this facade even as he becomes more and more aware of why it actually works.
I don't agree. I don't see any relation with the tale, as both the cultist and Dr Montauk agree of its horrible nature, and make a point about its chaotic and primal nature being what contains SCP-001 rather than a calculated scientific nature of procedure. Not all SCPs and SCPs' tales have to canonically align with one another, so it's very possible that these articles completely ignore each other. It's just my opinion, I could've missed some key details that could make my opinion very wrong.

Could it be that the doctor also believes that the procedure is real? As in, that after writing up the false procedure, he took an amnestic (spelling sorry Im on mobile) so even he would believe in it?
@@Marcus001 But we could consider them to be canonically aligned if we treat them (at least occasionally) as unreliable narrators. If two entries seem to be connected, but contradictory, maybe the in universe individuals that typed them up only had partial access to the relevant information. Maybe one entry was kept deliberately vague, or outright lied, to keep info about another SCP hidden from anyone without proper clearance. Or maybe the Foundation is so big and bureaucratic that the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing, and just cause one entry is updated with new info, doesn't mean all related entries will be updated.

The SCP understands the paradox of the human psyche. They HAVE TO define it, because to leave it undefined opens the way for others to define it into something worse or more powerful. By defining it first, it is restricted by their definition. The best they can do is define it as something confined and contained.

the scarlet king doesn’t espouse the old ways of living, it doesn’t even hate the modern age. the scarlet king is the friction between being pushed towards your purpose by force and being pulled towards it instead. the mixture of mysticism and ambition against logic and implicit collaboration. when this friction breaks, there will be no return to the old ways. the scarlet king exists to inevitably destroy everything.
what that really means is the real mystery, and luckily we won’t have to find out.

The Scarlet King is a metaphor for fascism, feudalism, colonialism, slavery, whatever you want to call it and the fetishization of the past. Thats all he is, a mirage made real by the Foundation's attempts to categorize and classify everything, because at the end of the day there is no justification for the actions of the Scarlet King, its all just wrong.
The Scarlet King in the most simplest form is just a vague concept of a supposedly glorious past of brutality, conquerors, and blood, he is just an aesthetic that evil throughout history has rallied behind, he is made up, he is an archetype, he is a lie. A lie made more and more real as people attempt to rationalize and justify this senseless brutality. It is an idea stuck in the past trying to reconcile with its own existence, the Scarlet King is having an existential crisis and lashing out at the world as history moves on to forget it. During the Enlightenment we had the chance but nobility was the final anchoring point the Scarlet King could latch onto after the Black Death and the Peasant Revolts, the Scarlet King is frail and it is on life support but as we feed it more ideas it can take form and soon it will destroy the world.

Came back to state the same thing I stated 8 months ago: your voice acting is incredible, and it really shines in this video. From now on, I’ll never be able to imagine the voice of Dr. Montauk other than the way you act it. Same thing with PoI-3172: the mystery in his voice, the way he slowly gets into Montauk’s head, asking the right questions for the researcher’s mind to figure it out on its own. Besides, that british accent of yours? Chef’s kiss. Anyway, you’re insanely skilled/talented and I’m glad I found your channel.

I see it as the chaos raging against our conquest of order. The manifestation of our fear that we try to resolve through codifying the supernatural... The inner animal bursting from within our efforts to secure and contain ourselves within the concrete of modern definition.

The world used to be chaos. Because we keep eliminating that chaos by using science to explain it, the chaos has nowhere to go. It condenses into an increasingly smaller space until it solidifies into the entity we know as the scarlet king.

We could scientifically analyze the probability of a dice roll using a quantum computer running the most sophisticated algorithm ever developed, but when it comes time to predict which number will come up next the scientist is no better off than a grade schooler.
Hell if we want to get really nit picky with the logic here, consider the method by which the condensation of chaos occurs. Because we classify things, the chaos condenses into a solid entity, correct? Sounds reasonable on the surface. However, by that very explanation you have classified the entity as a being which, by the condensation method proposed, cannot exist when classified. In other words, by defining the parameters by which this entity exists you have removed the chaos which it is exclusively composed of.

My favorite SCP-001 Proposal was "When Day Breaks". Only problem with that one is anyone in-universe reading it on the database knows it's not the right one because doomsday hasn't happened yet. It needed a framing story about the info being broadcast from the future.

Your perspective is Scarlet King existed first, thus, it takes offense to the invasion by SCP-999 essentially, but for everything there is an equal opposite at the very least, this is the binary law of the universe. Now, I'd be far more intrigued by your view if it somehow was discovered that SCP-999 was in fact responsible for why the Scarlet King became aware of his awareness and the pain he now must endure cuz "reasons that I'm sure a writer with far more talent than myself" can come up with.
