As much as I love the normal mysterious scps, this style of scp file seems so much more "in canon" since it makes the document look more like an actual scientific document rather than a strange set of clues about a mostly unknown phenomenon.

Yeah absolutely. I usually dont enjoy the extremely long winded, drawn out, barely-SCP giga stories that are basically just “name: sword. obiect class: safe containment procedures: none. exploration log: *full length novel about some shit thats related to the SCP but that has little to do with the actual SCP itself* but this one didnt tickle that “damnit man its just another fkng sci-fi/fantasy novel thats for some reason being published on the SCP Wiki” reflex in me that a lot of really long articles do. This one really felt like an “SCP” while still managing to give us a really good, in depth, engaging story.

@@mud4309 Its usualy when the SCP article reads the tekst of a journal. Instead of showing an exploration log, or interview. Whitch still allow for some subjectivity but are described as objectively as posible. A found journal realy is often just the author writing a novel. Although some realy good SCPs are done through this format, like "house of the worm" and "paint under the bridge".

      SCP 4246
      Containment class: esoteric
      Secondary class: Archon
      Disruption class amita
      Risk class: Caution
Complete containment of SCP-4246 phenomena is not presently feasible, all though it has been hypothesized that efforts to impede or terminate the anomaly may result in events detrimental to the preservation of normalcy. A disinformation campaign is to be maintained to actively discredit the legitimacy of claims made bY SCP-4246-1 and their supporters. Such allegations are to be dismissed as works of fiction, the product of mental illness, or religious delusion. Communities and cults comprised of SCP-4246-1 [and non-anomalous associates] are to be closely monitored.
It is of the utmost importance that suspected SCP-4246-1 type B are secured and contained as soon as possible due to their ability to gain preternatural knowledge of the Foundation and its inner-workings. Instances of SCP-4246-1 Type B are to be captured and contained within Psi-resistant humanoid containment cells. SCP-4246-1 TypeB must be physically restrained for their own safety when triangulating the location of [or in close proximity to] SCP-4246 transmitters, such as SCP-4246-2 and SCP-4246-3.
The existence of SCP-4246-2 and SCP-4246-3, along with their creators, must be hidden from the public by any means necessary. In the case ofSCP-4246-3, Provisional Containment Area-48 has been constructed and must be maintained. Members of Mobile Task Force Epsilon-19 "The Psych Ward" are the only individuals allowed within SCP-4246-3 unless authorized by Site Director.
      Description:
SCP-4246 primarily manifests as a morbid psychological condition involving dreams, hallucinations, delusions, and fixations of a singular
relation to the ocean and its contents. Individuals afflicted by SCP-4246 are classified as SCP-4246-1 and display significant behavioral changes, including the development of abnormal neuropathologies. Most SCP-4246-1 will eventually come to interpret their anomalous experiences as spiritual visions conveying some manner of revelation or esoteric knowledge, ultimately leading to the creation of cults and related organizations. The most immediate distinction that separates SCP-4246 from unrelated experiences is the inexplicable commonality between episodes and reactions.
      Frequently reported elements include:
Visions of sprawling and colossal cities beneath the sea.
The windowless structures display non-Euclidean architecture and are composed of a material described as smooth, seamless, glassy, and black.
Visions involving gardens of coral displaying indescribable colors presumally outside the human visual spectrum.
An uncontrollable psychological urge to immerse themselves in seawater, often to the point of self-endangerment.
Hallucinations involving symbols of unknown origin or context, usually manifesting as short, rapid flashes that leave fleeting imprints upon an individual's paracentral vision.
These visions have been known to trigger dizziness, vertigo, post-traumatic stress, psychosis, mania and/or depression, homicidal/suicidal thoughts and behavior, and the development of new hallucinations. Afflicted individuals have been known to kill family and friends in an effort to "save" them from an ill-defined but never the less impending cataclysm.
Reports of sensations similar to those described by sufferers of phanton pain and body integrity identity disorder but manifesting as heal thy people with their bodies intact feeling as though they are missing limbs that otherwise never existed. Afflicted individuals understand that this feeling is illogical and that the human body [normally] has four limbs, but continue to experience these sensations regardless of acceptance. Individuals have described incidents of phantom pain registering up to 12 meters away from their body, as if these non-existent appendages were significantly longer than their actual limbs. There exist several cases of acutely afflicted individuals removing the limbs of others and attempting to graph them onto their own body with fatal results.
The majority of SCP-4246-1 Will eventually self-terminate by drowning in the ocean. While all appear to suffer the compulsion to do so, a
minority are able to resist the urge.
SCP-4246-1 are divided into Type А, Туре В, and Type C variants.
Туре A individuals are the most common and generally display one or more of the previously noted symptoms. It is unknown how many
SCP-4246-1 Type A exist but their reaction to SCP-4246 is generally self-contained and easily countered by the propagation of disinformation.
Acutely affected individuals exhibit extrasensory perception [ESP], such as the ability to identify information hidden from normal senses, as well as preternatural knowledge of a subject's thoughts and memories. These individuals have been classified as
SCP-4246-1 Type B and, following decades of research, have been determined to be psi-positive [non-psychokinetic] passive receivers - unwillingly absorbing information via ESP but unable to actively transmit it.
Information regarding SCP-4246-1 Type C requires Level 4 clearance or authorization by Project: Awakened Dreamer director Dr.Joan Henrike.
The earliest known effort to catalog and explain the SCP-4246 phenomena was by English occultist Joseph Adler [1833 - 19211,] leader of the Hermetic Order of Universal Wisdom - an organization devoted to the study and practice of the occult, metaphysics, and paranormal activities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. devoted to the study and practice of the occult metaphysics and paranormal SCP-4246 The Dreams of the Firstborn Archon.

I love the world building with this one, it uses a ton of science to back up the anomalous nature/history and add to the world, instead of just saying "unknown material" "unidentifiable" or the all too famous [redacted]. I also really liked how the story portrays the Foundation as an evolving institution, one that wasn't very good at its job years prior working with simpler tools and a worse understanding of anomalies. They even got beaten by N*z*s with their research. Each time a researcher figured the puzzle out it felt really satisfying, and it happened multiple times. The ending too was icing on the cake.

Now this is how you write an SCP. No silly dimension teleportation sci-fi tech silliness to break suspension of disbelief, no "Feed it 12,000 class D a week and pray the world doesn't end" containment procedures. A slow logical buildup as the foundation uses standard scientific methods and some questionable morals to study and gleam the truth about an anomoly. Turning it from something that seems otherworldly and magic into something that, while foreign, is understandable and real. Brilliant work on the writer's part. This is what makes SCP such a facinating setting.

Cephalopods have their own little personalities, sense of mischief, concepts of teamwork and appreciation. Very curious and prone to wild adventures. So while hyper intelligent/longer lived cephalopods could be very, very alien--knowing the zoological stuff wove a more positive/less scary character into the Tethyans imo.

Genesis 2:2-3 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed.

Not odd! I have always wanted a salt water tank, and a Common Octopus for it! Precisely because of their intelligence and interactive tendencies. I could see the Tethyans being reasoned with, and likely willing to teach what they know. If their mode of communication didn't cause brain bleeds, I should add.

    • @TheFounderUtopia
      @TheFounderUtopia Před rokem +2

I've always said that I would never eat octopus because I regard them as sentient beings, so it would be like eating a person. The WAY their intelligence manifests is vastly different to ours, sure, but that's our anthropic bias at play. Whoever said our kind of sentience has to be the only kind that counts? They are so alien compared to us, their entire method of thinking would be so incompatible that even if things like psychic ability existed in the real world we probably wouldn't be able to fathom their thought processes. They may not even HAVE thought processes. But in their own way, I believe they are at least as sophisticated as we are, intellectually speaking.
It may be that they don't behave in manners we think of as personhood because they completely lack a sense of ego, and as such have not cannibalized their evolutionary autopilot system into a synthetic character they identify as "self", as we have. In this way, although our behaviour is more obviously organized and self-serving, it could even be argued they are more advanced than we are. We're all just chasing our own mental tails, at the end of the day. Building layers of habit like computer programming to perpetuate and advance the evolutionary misstep that was our creation of an ego. A mask we wear to present an image of self to the world and to ourselves, so we can continue to fool ourselves into thinking we can pin down our individuality as if understanding its location on a map, and thereby granting ourselves a point of reference from which we can understand the world around us with greater sophistication. If they don't have that, their understanding can only go so far, at least at the individual level.
But WITHOUT the ego, without intercepting the subconscious mind's analyses and attempting to reroute them through that wholly insufficient autopilot program, that was never built for it, maybe we would have advanced even further. What a world that might be. But I imagine to the ego's perspective, that world would look less advanced. Perhaps there would be no structures, no vehicles, no clothing, nothing we from the arrogance of hindsight deign to label as civilized. But allowing our subconscious minds to lead the way, allowing them to interact across subliminal channels without planting our feet and insisting like a petulant child that the flesh should get to decide, maybe that world would be one of greater natural harmony, and a more organic and patient growth to the level of sophistication we have artificially cultivated through the ego. Maybe that's how we would earn the power we now wield with reckless abandon, the spot we have stolen at the summit of the evolutionary arms race.
Who is right? I suppose that depends which side the fence you're on. To cephalopods, we're probably very strange creatures indeed. They might see our relentless pursuit of the ego as curiously as the idea of them submitting to the will of one of their tentacles and allowing it to lead them around like a strong dog on a weak leash. How very mindless we mindful creatures must look to one that lives in harmony with all of its components.

I like the idea of using this hivemind network as a means of creating a way to preserve their civilization through the KPg extinction event (and presumably to avoid this "Beast", whatever that may be) and find a way to restart their society when they were safe. And clearly, once the network understood what it was doing to humanity as a side effect, they fixed the "glitch" in the system and closed the system off from humanity. Using a hivemind as a form of created "afterlife" seems like something George R.R. Martin would write.

    • @goose1415
      @goose1415 Před rokem +19

It also seems hopeful in a way, while it was originally this unknowable horror that drove those touched by it insane, they were eventually able to expand their knowledge and interact with it in a way that may take humanity to that jump into a truly advanced civilization, and while perhaps it could end up with humanity becoming like them, purposefully devolving themselves to wait for a point when this "beast" was no longer a threat to them, it could lead to at some point in the far future "awakening" alongside this and other species and finally getting to truly know eachother. Or for a more cynical take, humanity in its immense arrogance would believe they could fight this creature and end up extinct, leaving nothing but ruin behind, or killing themselves off before learning to become so advanced as these entities.
It's such a good little story in that it sets up the ideas, strings you along as you find more and more threads, until bringing in all these twists away from the classic "unknowable Lovecraftian horror" trope and hitting you with something even more crazy. Giving us a satisfying and understandable ending but still giving us so much more to speculate on. Amazingly written

Cosmic horror of a very Lovecraftian sort. I usually groan when I see this kind of thing dumped into SCP (a bias I developed back when Slenderman stories were all the rage and Lovecraft fans kept trying to force the story into their mythos), but this? This was excellent!
First of all, I highly appreciate any story that doesn't just state "oh this object has X effect and X effect is 100% absolute in all circumstances forever and ever". The unkillable lizard in particular has reached that point. When that thing can survive literally changing all the fundamental laws of physics and having the very concept of itself deleted from platonic space, the thought of a vat of acid being able to contain it seems laughable. In this case? There's actually parts of it that can be understood and in believable ways. There's limitations on certain aspects that let us scratch into it and dig a little deeper. It's still ultimately unknowable, but we can dig far deeper than a lot of these stories usually let us, and I'm grateful for it.
I did have a funny thought though. With all the different completely unrelated ancient horrors trying to cross over that have all foreseen our doom, it makes me wonder if they're going to find out about each other and fight each other for the right to vanquish us.

What we _don't_ know is 1. When did they develop that trait? 2. Assuming they didn't start out with it, what did they do before they got it? And 3. What do they do to sapient species that _don't_ have that trait and the social changes that come with it?
They might be an entirely peace-loving species... And kill or enslave all of humanity in spite of that due to the danger we pose by _not_ being completely peace loving.

And C-16 relayed that really don't want to be bothered right now.
They have their own problems that their offsprings are devolving too much, where they just expect it to stop on a certain point and return.back
They are very nice neighbours, but they are only neighbours. And they have been living on the block longer than us and definitely can split our brains if they want to
And I see that they only want us to not mess the place we both call home while they're solving their own domestics...

It stands to reason that cephalopods would have had some opportunity to achieve sapience in some way, given their current level of sentience now and the fact that their brains are so overly complex as to require one per individual appendage, never mind the primary brain governing the rest.
And, like Dr. Freeman noted, the fossil record is INCREDIBLY biased against soft-bodied invertebrates, much to the point that finding fossils of cephalopods is very challenging.
