    Golf R is objectively the better daily car IMO and it's also a sleeper when it comes to performance.
    Its got Adjustable Power Seating with 3 memory buttons, Heated AND Ventilated Seats, Dual Climate Control, Back up camera WITH Projectile lines, Front and Rear parking sensors, Leather seats, Carbon Fiber dash, Customizable LED interior lighting, Comes in either Manual or DCT, Better Gas Milage, Better Sound System via Harman Kardon, Better Cabin Dampeing, etc.
    Performance wise Its got 15 more HP and, 17lbs more Torque AND has launch control. Is faster than the newest Type R and GR Corolla in a drag race. Does 0-60 time in 4.2 with DCT. The engine sounds way better than the GR (GR has a ton of buzz noise cause of the 3-cylinders). The GR Corolla AWD System also has a overheating problem which goes back to the GR Yaris and Toyota still hasn't fixed it!

  • @xClyptox

    GR Corolla, self limited production caused high markups on Core units. Strictly the base unit if we are discussing price gap - no limited slip, no JBL, no heated/cooled seats, no function air ducks for front clip/hood, no armrest and the interior leaves a lot to be desired. Again, find one at the base price of 36k and you got me - its the ABSOLUTE buy. Circuit vs R - no contest, R takes it easily.

    I marvel at some of the absurd comments on here. You can drive the cartoonish Corolla, a car that Pee Wee Herman would drive, or drive a refined, sophisticated, engaging (yes, they are) Golf R that will still look modern and timeless 20 years into the future. For all of you talking about resale values, used Golf R’s have held their values very well, with five year old Golfs sometimes selling for nearly their new price. And for reliability, I see more Toyotas abandoned on the side of the road than VWs. Fact is, if you take care of your car, a VW will last every bit as long as the Toyota. A young woman side-swiped us a couple years ago, and we ended up driving a Toyota 4-Runner as a rental. What a gas-guzzling pile of junk. I wouldn’t own a Toyota if someone paid me to. Nope, we love VWs, which are driver’s cars, loads of fun, and economical to boot.

    Great review and either choice is a good one, depending on what you like. I wanted a new R but the dealer markups here are $5-7K. I stumbled on a dealership 400 miles away and negotiated a much better price, making the long drive well-worth it. I decided early against the GR since the markups here make the car nearly as expensive as an R, and with 3 cylinders? Not for me.

      Actually in this case it kind of does have a chance of being “ as reliable “
      Toyota has a brand new platform with the 3 cylinder engine and we don’t know too much about it.
      While the golf R is basically the same platform and being tweaked for quite some time now.
      That said, it’s definitely got a chance to be the same or even more reliable

  • @AntFragale
    @AntFragale Před rokem +4

    I just want to point a few things out:
    The GRC always gets points for it’s adjustable differential split but people fail to mention that 70-30 doesn’t put 70% to the rear, it *allows* 70% to go to the rear. In real world driving, you cannot kick the rear out at all on dry pavement. Like what so ever. This is not true of the golf.
    My next point piggybacks off the above; the golf’s “trick” differential doesn’t allow more power to go to the rear, only 50% can just like always. What it does is allow ALL of that 50% to go to ONE wheel. This is what induces oversteer. And it does it very well.
    I understand fair comparison as well but it’s worth noting that the golf wasn’t developed with a 6sp at the forefront. It’s only available in the US market. The DSG is much faster in every measure and certainly does not make the GRC the same in acceleration. A DSG 8R is like a full second faster in both 0-60 and 1/4 mile. Even more than a second in some instances.
    Lastly, it’s not always fair to say the GRC is “much” cheaper than the golf because you NEED dual LSD’s from the performance pack and such on the core to make it even remotely desirable. This pushes the MSRP in the 40+ range and then you’re like within 5k.
    All in all I’m super happy the GRC exists. Same for the CTR and EN. They’re all great cars for sure but this golf is certainly the most well rounded. It has WAY more features than the others, it’s more luxurious in every aspect, it’s faster in a straight line, and on the same tires, it’s just as fast around tracks as even the CTR. I mean even on it’s abysmal oem tires it was only a few seconds slower on the ring. Just saying.

Toyota likes to bolt on ground effects kits to the exterior of their cars in an attempt to make them look sporty...it just looks, well, bolted on, like an after-thought. The headlights are a strange swoopy shape, the fog lights look undersized surrounded by all of that black pladding. 3 exhaust tips and the protruding bumpers are also less attractive than the VW.
