    Thank you for finally opening your eyes on the current elected leadership of the USA . Oil Refineries are GOOD TARGETS . After looking into the USA aid for Ukraine last few years i am ashamed of my country . Oh politicians talk great but actions have been a disgrace for a country that is [or was ] a leader of the western world . Since the war started i have and will send my extra cash to support Ukraine every week .

    . Countries that lived under Russian rule in the former Soviet Union, such as Ukraine, know that if they do not fight against the Russians, their culture and country will disappear because Russia will tear up signed treaties if they are not remembered with the use of military force. And when the Baltic countries saw the invasion of Ukraine, they knew they would be next and they are preparing.
    . If Americans and Western Europe allow Ukraine to be invaded, they will be seen as weak and disunited, and predatory and expansionist countries like Russia and China, if they smell fear and cowardice, will not resist and attack, no matter how absurd it may seem to Western eyes, who thought that everyone they would prefer peace and that conflicts would be restricted to UN diplomacy to maintain the peace and trust between countries necessary to have a globalized economy where goods and money circulate freely without borders. This thinking is so dominant that the American government is more concerned about the price of oil than about civilian lives that are lost every day in Ukraine due to lack of military aid promised by the Budapest Treaty.

    • @TheFeldhamster
      @TheFeldhamster Před měsícem

      I used to think that but that's a bit too simplified a take. I totally agree about the effect on ruzzia. The really important question is this, though: how much free refining capacity does the rest of the world have? Because if suddenly a huge buyer (like ruzzia) enters the market and increases demand for refined gas and diesel by a lot, then the market price of those will absolutely go up. Especially if there is not enough refining capacity in the rest of the world and refineries become a bottleneck.
      /Normally/, the price of crude and refined product go hand in hand. But if you knock out all the refineries of a big country to the point there's a worldwide bottleneck, the prices of crude and refined product could actually diverge. We might see high gas prices DESPITE the price of crude dropping to new lows.
      So far, I was under the impression that the US mostly imports crude and refines it themselves so falling crude prices should give them LOWER prices at the pump. BUT: I could totally imagine US companies reacting to a worldwide price increase for refined gas and diesel by selling abroad and/or hiking their prices as well. These companies are not led by good people (more like total fuckers like the Koch brothers). If gas prices in the US get affected a lot, and given how gerrymandered the US is - would we end up with another Trump term? That would be REALLY bad for Ukraine. Then there's also a lot of elections in the EU this year, including the EU parliament. You can bet good money that the fascist putlerite parties like the German AfD will exploit high gas prices.
      Personally, I say burn, baby burn, I'll take the tram or my bike or share my car or just walk (I'm European, where I live is walkable for most things). The problem is I don't trust my fellow citizens all that much anymore. The latest polls re: what people would vote if there were elections next Sunday are pretty terrifying.
      If we're lucky, the rest of the world has enough refineries to process all that cheap crude that's about to enter the market. Currently, that's where I hang my hopes. Hurting ruzzia AND getting cheaper gas for the rest of the world would be poetic justice.

      @@TheFeldhamster I live in Germany, see your points. At the same time, US is 100% self-reliant meanwhile, both for crude and refined. There is a lot of surplus capacity for crude, Saudi/OPEC are struggling to limit production, countries are leaving OPEC to avoid the Saudis f*cking them around. Also for russia, if 50-60% of the refined capacity would be kicked, it had a massive internal effect. It is a country on the war path, and it has to be brought to it's senses. So they need to be hurt in a way they take notice.

    While in the past the Kremlin has had a very convenient attack, this time I do not believe it was the case. That doesn't mean they're not going to try and use it for their own cynical needs... But this attack did nothing to help the Kremlin, all it did was make the Kremlin look weaker. I don't even subscribe to the idea of a hawkish faction allowing something like this to come through. Instead let's understand the nature of a police state. It's there to suppress the dissidents and protesters of its own population, not to provide security to that population. It's sole purpose is to provide security in the form of oppression, to the ruling factions. As such, it is particularly bad at stopping these type of attacks. I would point as evidence, all the fires that accidentally have happened in places that would be considered appropriate to attack in a time of war

That’s not the situation today, for a number of reasons, including production. But I admit, I was a bit too glib about what would still be economically painful events causing distress and perhaps hunger for hundreds of millions, especially living overseas. Still, given the context of the crises of my early adulthood, the petroleum situation in North America seems surprisingly manageable. I can’t tell today if the cup of woe is Half full or half empty?

    yeah, no, as u said, Ru is not concerned with saving face. At least not in the sense or range that we comprehend the idea of saving face. Ru is the only major power who's historically been so-called 'humiliated' in defeat repeatedly going back a couple hundred years or so. They actually have only backed off & become non-bellicose when they were humiliated historically.
    They can handle a massive amount of so-called humiliation and not implode, and not have any ability to lash out in other ways that would harm other nations, e.g. WMD or nukes, none of which they can use at all due to the conventional reponse promised by us (they can't afford to lose most of their airpower). They know they are barking up the wrong friggin tree at this point after 2 years of barbaric yet mostly impotent (in many ways) war against Ukr. BUT, this is a complex topic that i'm not saying is simple. The key with western leaders or former leaders talking about ending the war at the status quo of now, is patently absurd now bcuz it's plainly clear that Ukr has had one arm tied behind its back for almost a year now, and without that being tied, they'd probably have had a chance to push Ru back & get them to sue for peace potentially, on poor terms for them (the Ru's), whereas right now the settlement would not be favorable at all for Ukr it would seem. But main problem w/ Orban/trump saying to sue for peace, is that in a war like this, it's never smart for us supporters of Ukr to show our cards at this stage of a war like this, ie major land war (first major land war of scale, since ww2). Fact is that Ru has quite literally restarted WW2, particularly from their own perspective. Back then, they couldn't be as aggressive as they wanted to, so they're doing it now. Really, that is how these elite Russians think, this ultra conservative fascistic oriented group, including Siloviki elite, the few hundred of so of those guys. As a result, this is like a pest of a country. It is a steady consistent threat that persists. They can't make sudden moves that will change any games, so they keep their persistent aggressive approach. They will try to harass the Baltics and grab any small piece land or big piece, they can. They really really will try this, imho (and i did attend one of the elite programs in international politics (in top three worldwide). A coalition of the willing, such as the member of the J10 group within Nato, needs to get ready for that and for harassment of Romania. I believe Moldova should be defended by a coalition even before Ukr is ever directly defended by same coalition. Predicting how this war will proceed is very difficult. Ukr has a very decent chance to have a decent outcome, as of this week in particular, what with maaaany many shells being located by european countries for Ukr, which will be there soon. We'll know much more by next winter

    Everyone says that Russia has converted its economy to a “war economy”, but west exactly is a “war economy”? Nobody explains. As far as I can tell, a war economy is when a country starts spending all its savings on military equipment, and when they run out of savings, they start printing money. Is this correct? And how sustainable is it? How long can Russia continue with this “war economy”?

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 Před měsícem +1

      Not just savings. Although as I understand it, they're rapidly draining what is supposed to be the national 'retirement/pension fund'.
      It also means redirecting both funds and personnel from all kinds of civilian projects (infrastructure upkeep, for example) towards military related efforts. Engineers, welders, electricians, doctors and nurses...you need as many of them as possible to manufacture weapons and take care of the wounded and all that. Not to mention, that every young man being drafted is missing as a laborer in his local economy. And loads of highly educated people have already fled the country.
      This will (ironically) make the economy look pretty good initially. Low unemployment, better wages etc. Everyone is happy for a while, until the whole thing implodes.
      Although admittedly, Russia has a great advantage in that a large part of the state finances come from oil export, not income tax or export of other goods. It's just damn hard to sanction a country like Russia into oblivion, because our own economies also depend on that oil not being completely cut off.
      And as long as they can finance the war with oil, it's really hard to stop them. The negative effects of a 'war economy' don't happen overnight. They take years to fully manifest, but they will also take decades to erase again. The regular Russians are in for a really hard time, in all likelihood.
      Do you know the 'Inside Russia' channel? Konstantin over there has made some easy to follow along videos about the ins and outs of Russia's economy and why it's doomed to self destruct in the foreseeable (if not necessarily near) future.

    30:00 It's not so much Russian FSB incompetence alone that allowed the Crokus attack, as the institutional inflexibility from being 25 years out of practice since anything similar in Moscow, and a severe case of tunnel vision that is hyperfocused on threats related to the Ukraine war. That said, Hanlon's razor applies, i.e. the terrorist attack was much less likely to have been a direct Russian black op (or even facilitated or allowed by Russian security forces) than simple incompetence/incapability, i.e. inability to get the right intelligence evaluated correctly, and escalated to the right level in sufficient time to figure out how to stop the event. Remember that even the FBI had two early intelligence assessments in advance of the 911 attacks, but these (among all the many other daily threat reports that they collect) were dismissed as too unlikely to be worth action. It's NOT easy.

I don’t find this portrayal of these comments realistic at all. It’s extremely misleading to say the Biden administration is so myopic or indifferent to Ukraine’s suffering from this illegal war.
