The west's lack of enthusiasm to help Ukraine is making me sick. Getting on for literally. As a Brit living in Finland, whose Czech father had to leave his homeland after WWII when Russia rolled in I cannot fathom why this is and I start to seriously worry about the future if people don't step up to the threat.

@@RobBCactive I can well see that many states have a lot of catching up to w.r.t. rearming. But really, how is it possible that has not been a priority for two years now? Especially after having watch Russia roll into Donbas and Crimea already in 2014? And how did they become convinced such a war would not happen again? Everyone in all the states of East Europe has been wary of Russia,. There is a reason Poland is armed to the teeth. There is a reason Finland has built enough underground bunker space to keep the entire population safe for a long time, indeed all new apartment building have to have bomb shelters in their basements. That is not a left over from the nuclear threats of the Cold War, that is with awareness that what is happening in Ukraine today could be happening here. There is a reason Finland and others still have mandatory military service. How on Earth did more western states fall for the charms of Putin? How on Earth did they not get the memo in 2014? It's mind boggling.,

      @user-xh2yg4uv9q
First, you're a zero off. EU managed to get 300'000 shells last year, and the unfeasable target is now set to be met by building and refurbrishing factories by joint venture in Czechia and Rheinmetall plants. Some faction is on it on the highest levels, i know certain countries have sent additional artilerry individually, but all that is partly classified obscure information. As Baltic states have virtually no heavy industry, they have a different plan. Estonia has actually sourced additional ~1M 155mm shells on open market recently, Latvia has made public all sanctioned Russian assets and asks rest of the Europe to do the dame and release them directly for funding Ukraine. Apparently there are plausible $28B which could be released out of total $200B estimated value.
These are just some examples, further development of which we have to follow up. And don't worry, we don't rely on US help anymore here, as it is still not clear will it follow the Russia's way or not in coming years. It has been jeopardised by methods outside the scope of this debate. EU on the other hand is certainly lethargic in real response and lacking a strategy, hindered by the fact there are ~50 countries apart from US involved counting themselves as Ukraine's allies. But the will of vast majority to stop this attack on everything we stand for and our nrighbours are not compromised here.
Somehow it doesn't work 1:1, considering how disarmed we are compared to US and how long it takes for it to change, given the bureaucracy. The strayegy of EU mostly giving cash and other aid, with US providing most of weapons has failed, not trough fault of Europe after the war started. There are too many factors leading to this situation to mention here. And of course, the sleepy inertia of institutions will cost us, but i assure you there is much more going on behind the scenes you don't (and shouldn't) see on MSM. In the end it will be Europe directly fighting Russia on the ground if we can't find a way to stop it.

I thought perhaps the current government in my country (United States) could fall no lower in their treatment of Ukraine, but they have: to have the gall to tell Ukraine to stop hitting Russian oil facilities. First we provide mostly only our old weapons that have either been phased out or are soon set to be. The few better weapons have limitations (Ukraine cannot strike targets in Russia). Then we renege on our promise to provide additional funds and weapons costing Ukraine thousands of lives and loss of additional land; however, the current government is obviously more concerned about oil prices and staying in power than they are about human lives. They also do not care about what a Russian victory will really cost the United States in American lives and money. They do not care about the future because they will no longer be in office. Slava Ukraine!

@jackcowan5001 They likely wouldn't be able to operate the more complex weapon systems as it takes years of training, and also support and maintenance. The failure of the counter-offensive was a prime example, tanks alone didn't make a dent as they didn't have support from other branches, esp. air force. There were reports that Ukrainian soldiers use google translate to read the manuals of weapons in the field and figure out how TF they work. Nobody questions the extreme valor of the Ukrainian soldiers but it's just not enough. No other military in the world achieved the level of integration the US armed forces have. It's a bummer, I'm in EU and we suck rectum.

It was the Democrats who hyper-polarized the House (208 Democrats and only 8 fringe Republicans voted to oust leader McCarthy creating a situation where the next leader would need the support of most of the fringe 8). It was the Biden administration that led the Ukrainians and other Eastern European nations to not use the lend-lease bill the US Congress overwhelmingly passed in 2022. The opportunity expired at the end of September 2023. It was the Democrats who linked the issues of border security and Ukraine aid after hyper-polarizing the House, knowing full well they wouldn't do anything to appease reasonable Republican demands to secure the border and deter the flow of illegals. These moves are the hand of Nancy Pelosi. She is a master of manipulation, and the Republicans reliably fall for it. Oddly, Trump was able to flip that on her often. As crazy as he is, he does have some skills. I think there is no doubt we would support the UK and NATO though.

Oil prices have increased recently because OPEC has cut production, and there are currently events in the Middle East that effect oil prices. It has nothing to do with Russia’s oil refineries. Oil refineries do not produce oil.

Macron's stance now is firm, clear and morally just, and I think that anyone would fight for the freedoms my grandfather and many others have suffered for to retain or acquire.

In another discussion about the rus economy the point was made that rus was running out of manpower for both industry and military. A Ukrainian in the discussion gleefully said that Ukraine was just trying to help russia with their labor problem by shutting down some refineries to release manpower for other uses.
An option for Ukraine to consider as a reply to US requests to not attack rus oil is simple,
"What have you done for me lately, say in the last 7 months? What will you do for me before the new year??"
Actually Ukraine has hit a few oil depots at ports, which has been noted as affecting exports.
Ukraine should also be attacking the shadow fleet in the black sea. I thought that ports would not allow ships/tankers in without insurance, even if only self insurance by someone like russia.
There is not only a "black fleet" for oil, there is also one for fishing, pillaging fish stocks all over the world. Long range international fleets, sometimes working with black fishing boats are what caused the african piracy problem, like Somalia. They came in over fished the stocks, "strip mined" the sea bottom causing the local fishers to have nothing to catch. They got no international help, so they had the choice to starve or go pirate ...
Iran may have used russian tactics, but with a 2 week warning, it seems to me that they didn't really want to succeed. Instead, they had to be seen acting after their consulate was bombed, but they didn't want to hit Israel hard enough to provoke an all out war. So they shot a bunch of missiles and drones over very long range allowing Israel time to get most of them. Honor satisfied, they just have to absorb the Israeli reaction.
The flood peak will vary by location, by local weather, will progress down the various rivers. There is no single flood peak date

I cannot believe the White House thesis that bombing refineries will force crude oil prices to rise. If prices really go up, it happens due to these announcements, repeated by anybody who feels the need to say something about this topic. In fact Ukraine until now only bombed refineries. Refineries are no source of crude oil they consume oil to convert it to gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Taking oil consumers out of the market may decrease the price not increse it. Anyway Russia is currently connected to markets not very tightly, so the influence of what happens inside Russia should not influence international markets too much.

The WH has been disappointing in its support, but the price cap has been very successful. For more than a year Russia has had to sell oil at a loss or at best marginal profits while significantly lowering oil prices for most of that time. Oil prices are not rising due to the strikes, but a bit due to news driven trading and mostly due to OPEC strategic efforts to increase oil prices.

When the chips are down the US is a poor ally as was demonstrated at the start of WWII . When they joined the war , following pearl harbour, their miltary aid came at a price . Britain didn't pay the final installment of lend lease until 2006. Meanwhile 32000 locations were bombed in Britain which didn't finish rebuilding until the 70s and 80s. Needless to say the US finished the war a lot richer than when it entered.
