  • In this video, we fit irons for Alec. He is a mid handicap player and shooting in the mid to high 80's. He has never been fit before and has enjoyed the process.
    In short, he was playing a regular flex club and only carrying it about 175. Trent fit him into a club he liked the look and feel of, and gave him a stiff shaft. Now he is hitting it 195!

    Agreed with commentors. He needed a lesson more than he needed a fitting, although the regular shafts are not helping. Tons of early extension here and swinging for the rafters. If he dialed it back he would get that smash factor up and probably hit it the same distance. Crazy speed for a 7 iron.

  • @danramproject5655

    All He needed was to keep his old clubs, but bend the clubs maybe 1 degree upright and done. It seems his current gamers are too flat for him and that’s the reason he is missing right. Nothing wrong with your 7 iron going 175+. That’s actually ideal for gapping.

  • @MinimalDann
    @MinimalDann Před 2 lety +30

    there is no way on this earth he needs to be using a “game improvement club” maybe one with a little forgiveness yes but he’s already got the horse power and distance. His current gamer was way better than the other clubs interns of dispersion and let’s be fair who needs to hit a 7 iron any further than 177 carry…
    Surely the fitter should send him away with his current clubs…

    His shots with his own irons had a much tighter grouping. This is why I have yet to go get fitted for clubs. Spend tons of money just to end up with a product that gives you distance but kills your accuracy. He is also SMASHING that 7 iron. If he hits like that on the course, he should be playing scratch golf. If he's still shooting in the 80's with that swing, he needs work on his short game. Yes I am preaching to the choir because I have a similar issue. I

      His "fitting" literally made things considerably worse. All Alex needs is a few lessons in control and shot shaping. He seems obsessed with speed above all else. He could be really excellent with some guidance. not new $1000+ clubs. IMO

    Im just watching this to study his swing

  • @justinstephenson9360
    @justinstephenson9360 Před 2 lety +18

    Not convinced by this fitting. Alec's problem is mostly path and face control, he is swinging a little to the right but with his existing set of irons his face was mostly around 4* open to the path. That is a recipe for the ball going right and spinning up. Unquestionably some of that lack of control would be down to the shaft.
    For someone who can swing a 7i at 101 mph the last thing he needs is a power bat. I can understand the wish to have more forgiveness but IMO he should play more traditional lofts (maybe something like i210 or Miz 223s), and with his speed he might even be able to play an extra stiff shaft. I would experiment with the weight of shaft to see if that has an effect - not everyone reacts the same way to weight changes.
    I would be less concerned about peak height and spin - Alec's swing is just so fast that he is bound to get a lot of spin. From Trackman an average tour pro swings the 7i at 90 mph, gets just over 7000 rpm of spin, a launch angle of 16.3* and a peak height of 96 ft. Alec is over 10% faster than the average tour pro!
    What Alec needs to work on is path and face control, maybe a slightly steeper angle of attack and definitely needs more forward shaft lean to launch the ball lower (stiffer shaft should help).

    • @Jameslawrencehaardy
      @Jameslawrencehaardy Před 2 lety +1

      From slowing it down his biggest issue is that he's getting stuck inside, stops rotating and ends up jumping through his shots to square up the club face. Which is why he's hitting the high right shots because from the impact position it's impossible to get your hands far enough ahead of the ball, but like you said he just needs to focus on getting a little steeper so he has more room to turn through the shot. I imagine with his driver he's almost hitting slices consistently

    • @twinprime
      @twinprime Před 2 lety +6

      During the fitting the shaft info on Track man was DGX100 which I assume Dynamic Gold X100 which is a 130g X-stiff shaft. This speed is insane my back hurts watching it (I'm a pathetic 85mph with a 6 iron, and I'm already above average for most golfers haha).
      Also I'm really wondering they gave him all super game improvement irons and not players one like Apex Pro, i59 or i525, 0311P. With this speed he doesn't need any help with stronger lofts.

    • @justinstephenson9360
      @justinstephenson9360 Před 2 lety

      @@twinprime Great spot on the shaft info - I missed it completely. With Alec's speed he definitely needs an X-Stiff shaft. The i59's you suggested would be an excellent choice for Alec. And it is not just your back that hurts watching that speed!!

    • @Jameslawrencehaardy
      @Jameslawrencehaardy Před 2 lety +1

      @@twinprime Because it's mainly about strike, smash factor for a mid iron is like 1.3-.14 - bearing in mind that smash factor is basically just a ratio of your club head speed to ball speed. He's hitting a 7 iron at 28 degrees loft with a smash factor of low 1.3 consistently with a more traditional lofted 7 iron he'd struggle to get over 1.3 and strike the ball consistently. I played the nike vr pro combo for years and the 7 iron in that set by comparison is 35 degrees, the 6 is 31 and I usually average 135 ball speed on a 6 iron that's less lofted than the 7 Iron here.
      He's on a weird line between swinging hard and fast but also need that extra forgiveness to be able to consistently strike the ball well, no point buying a set where you just hit the ball different every time. I'd say he'd probably be better off just getting a few lessons before getting a new set of clubs and fixing that issue of getting stuck inside and getting a more consistent strike then he could easily be gaming something like a p770 or t100s instead

  • @animeidiot8649
    @animeidiot8649 Před 2 lety +1

    His old clubs are golden for him! There is obviously a reason why he has not gone to a fitter before, there is no need. I do wonder though that if he is that consistent, why the steady slight push? With that level of obvious skill even a slight adjustment to stance or grip should fix such a static error. Additionally why swing the irons like a driver...? I would go a 80% 5 iron over 95% 7 every day all year, should he do that, he would be + handicap. Perhaps he plays different, but then why do that in a fitting? when the goal is to tune in your clubs for course use... Anyhow that is superb athletic swing and he should treasure his clubs that support it!

      It's face angle and/or swing path. In my opinion, he hits a natural cut (fade), that's a better way to look at it. Straight balls are the toughest shots to hit. I would also guess he just plays the cut all the time. Im Sung-jae plays a cut on almost every shot and he's world class. I would say try to emulate someone like him or someone with a swing similar to yours. Couples, Nicklaus, KJ Choi, all hit A TON of cuts.
