Tears In The Rain (A Blade Runner Short Film)

  • Tears In The Rain, the award-winning South African sci-fi short by filmmaker Christopher Grant Harvey, is an unabashed love letter to the 1982 motion picture Blade Runner and Philip K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep"?
    Set in Los Angeles in the latter part of the twenty-first century, the short stars Sean Cameron Michael as John Kampff, a mysterious law enforcement official who is tracking down a man named Andy Smith (Russel Savadier), who is suspected of being a replicant: an artificial being almost indistinguishable from humans.
    With its haunting, 80s-inspired synthesized score, futuristic Los Angeles cityscape with flying cars, looming ultra-skyscrapers, and neon-haloed, grime-covered streets, Tears In The Rain convincingly duplicates the dark dystopian aesthetic of Blade Runner.

    Very nicely done. I didn't think of it as a peice of fan film while watching. I was absorbed. Well written, well directed. Acting was top notch...especially the replicant. Great work and thanks for sharing.

    So after watching this a few times I think the ending is supposed to suggest the Blade Runner is himself a Replicant.
    During the interview he goes through some of the Replicant's memories to prove that the Replicant's memories were implanted, and would thus make him a Nexus 3.
    At the end, the Replicant starts describing a memory that the Blade Runner says he shouldn't have or wasn't programmed with, and by the end he looks pissed off. Then he looks kinda confused, like the Blade Runner's doubting himself after spending a whole interview describing why he doesn't like Replicants.
    Perhaps the Blade Runner's handlers didn't provide him with a dossier because they knew there happened to be a few memories the Blade Runner was programmed with as well.
    When the Replicant starts describing the memory, the Blade Runner is confused because it's not in the files but gets pissed off because he's realizing it's HIS memories. That's why he looks so confused and full of self-doubt, because the Blade Runner realizes HE's a "clock that can tell lies."
    Could be wrong, but still, I love this fan film. Great job guys, keep it up!

  • @ekathe85
    @ekathe85 Před 4 lety +21

    Excellent work! Rather than suggesting the Blade Runner might be a replicant as well, I think it might mean he is unsure whether he retired a human being by mistake. He could be the same Kampff who helped develop the Voight Kampff machine. The alleged replicant is apparently a Nexus 3, three generations older than Roy and Rachael, so it would fit the timeframe. Overall, beautifully done. Kudos.

    You guys are good actors. You also are technically capable film makers. My grievance lies in how callous the corporate guy was. It made no sense to torment him in his final moments when apparently he was causing no harm and was a good janitor for four years. Perhaps another tale is needed to explain why the Tyrell Corp would send this guy out to shatter his world view moments before his death?

    I thought it was a joke at first. "Award winning Blade Runner fan film" (The thumbnail also looked quite bad). But I must say, this was extremely, extremely good. It was better than the short Dennise Villeneuve presented, "Nexus Dawn". If the production values were a little higher, this could've been part of the official Canon or something. It's quite stunning actually. The acting is awesome, the writing tight, the music is ear-candy and the framing smart. I would've given you constructive criticism, but I don't have any objections (maybe the thumbnail). For a fan film, this is masterful work. Great job!

    This was great, those 11 minutes of both of them trying to convince the other of their reality. It was amazing, truly amazing. And at the end he was unsure of what he did as if he made a mistake. Also the why make a clock that lies was great from the guy, it makes alot of sense why make a machine that lies. What's it lying too? I mean if it's' designed to be a machine then everyone should know and it shouldn't even have these memories. I think what truly comes down to is when in Jurrasic Park when Jeff Goldblum put that droplet of water on his hand twice and they both went different directions even though they where put on the same spot. He was explaining chaos theory and how little changes in complex systems can have unexpected results. And then this:
    YEAH, BUT YOUR SCIENTISTS WERE SO PREOCCUPIED WITH WHETHER OR NOT THEY COULD THAT THEY DIDN’T STOP TO THINK IF THEY SHOULD
    Should they have even made these replicants in the first place?

    He drops clear insider knowledge and gets frustrated when the "Rep" shows he has memories beyond what he was supposed to have and maybe being a human and possibly leading Kampff to wonder if he killed a human. This moment most likely lead him and Voight to develop the *VK test*
